On the fermion spectrum of spontaneously generated fuzzy extra dimensions with fluxes

We consider certain vacua of four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theory with the same field content as the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, resulting from potentials which break the N=4 supersymmetry as well as its global SO(6) symmetry down to SO(3) x SO(3). We show that the theory behaves at intermediate scales as Yang-Mills theory on M^4 x S^2 x S^2, where the extra dimensions are fuzzy spheres with magnetic fluxes. We determine in particular the structure of the zero modes due to the fluxes, which leads to low-energy mirror models.

Dimensional Reduction of the Heterotic String over nearly-Kaehler manifolds

Our aim is to derive the effective action in four dimensions resulting by reducing dimensionally the ten-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ heterotic supergravity coupled to ${\cal N}=1$ super Yang-Mills over manifolds admitting a nearly-Kähler structure. Given the fact that all six-dimensional nearly-Kähler manifolds are included in the class of the corresponding non-symmetric coset spaces plus a group manifold, our procedure amounts in applying the Coset Space Dimensional Reduction scheme using these coset spaces as internal manifolds. In our examination firstly the rules of the reduction of the theory over a general six-dimensional non-symmetric manifold are stated and subsequently a detailed case by case analysis is performed for all the three non-symmetric coset spaces. For each case the four-dimensional scalar potential is derived and the corresponding nearly-Kähler limit is obtained. Finally, we determine the corresponding supergravity description of the four-dimensional theory employing the heterotic Gukov-Vafa-Witten formula and results of the special Kähler geometry.

Coset Space Dimensional Reduction and Wilson Flux Breaking of Ten-Dimensional N=1, E(8) Gauge Theory

We consider a N=1 supersymmetric E(8) gauge theory, defined in ten dimensions and we determine all four-dimensional gauge theories resulting from the generalized dimensional reduction a la Forgacs-Manton over coset spaces, followed by a subsequent application of the Wilson flux spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism. Our investigation is constrained only by the requirements that (i) the dimensional reduction leads to the potentially phenomenologically interesting, anomaly free, four-dimensional E(6), SO(10) and SU(5) GUTs and (ii) the Wilson flux mechanism makes use only of the freely acting discrete symmetries of all possible six-dimensional coset spaces.

Unified Gauge Theories and Reduction of Couplings: from Finiteness to Fuzzy Extra Dimensions

Finite Unified Theories (FUTs) are N=1 supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories, which can be made all-loop finite, both in the dimensionless (gauge and Yukawa couplings) and dimensionful (soft supersymmetry breaking terms) sectors. This remarkable property, based on the reduction of couplings at the quantum level, provides a drastic reduction in the number of free parameters, which in turn leads to an accurate prediction of the top quark mass in the dimensionless sector, and predictions for the Higgs boson mass and the supersymmetric spectrum in the dimensionful sector. Here we examine the predictions of two such FUTs. Next we consider gauge theories defined in higher dimensions, where the extra dimensions form a fuzzy space (a finite matrix manifold). We reinterpret these gauge theories as four-dimensional theories with Kaluza-Klein modes. We then perform a generalized a la Forgacs-Manton dimensional reduction. We emphasize some striking features emerging such as (i)the appearance of non-Abelian gauge theories in four dimensions starting from an Abelian gauge theory in higher dimensions, (ii) the fact that the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the theory takes place entirely in the extra dimensions and (iii) the renormalizability of the theory both in higher as well as in four dimensions. Then reversing the above approach we present a renormalizable four dimensional SU(N) gauge theory with a suitable multiplet of scalar fields, which via spontaneous symmetry breaking dynamically develops extra dimensions in the form of a fuzzy sphere $S^2_N$.

WKB Approximation in Noncommutative Gravity

We consider the quasi-commutative approximation to a noncommutative geometry defined as a generalization of the moving frame formalism. The relation which exists between noncommutativity and geometry is used to study the properties of the high-frequency waves on the flat background.

On the consistency of coset space dimensional reduction

In this letter we consider higher-dimensional Yang-Mills theories and examine their consistent coset space dimensional reduction. Utilizing a suitable ansatz and imposing a simple set of constraints we determine the four-dimensional gauge theory obtained from the reduction of both the higher-dimensional Lagrangian and the corresponding equations of motion. The two reductions yield equivalent results and hence they constitute an example of a consistent truncation.

Fermions on spontaneously generated spherical extra dimensions

We include fermions to the model proposed in hep-th/0606021, and obtain a renormalizable 4-dimensional SU(N) gauge theory which spontaneously generates fuzzy extra dimensions and behaves like Yang-Mills theory on M^4 \times S^2. We find a truncated tower of fermionic Kaluza-Klein states transforming under the low-energy gauge group, which is found to be either SU(n), or SU(n_1) x SU(n_2) x U(1). The latter case implies a nontrivial U(1) flux on S^2, leading to would-be zero modes for the bifundamental fermions. In the non-chiral case they may pair up to acquire a mass, and the emerging picture is that of mirror fermions. We discuss the possible implementation of a chirality constraint in 6 dimensions, which is nontrivial at the quantum level due to the fuzzy nature of the extra dimensions.

Dynamical generation of fuzzy extra dimensions, dimensional reduction and symmetry breaking

We present a renormalizable 4-dimensional SU(N) gauge theory with a suitable multiplet of scalar fields, which dynamically develops extra dimensions in the form of a fuzzy sphere S^2. We explicitly find the tower of massive Kaluza-Klein modes consistent with an interpretation as gauge theory on M^4 x S^2, the scalars being interpreted as gauge fields on S^2. The gauge group is broken dynamically, and the low-energy content of the model is determined. Depending on the parameters of the model the low-energy gauge group can be SU(n), or broken further to SU(n_1) x SU(n_2) x U(1), with mass scale determined by the size of the extra dimension.

Supersymmetric compactifications of heterotic strings with fluxes and condensates

We discuss supersymmetric compactifications of heterotic strings in the presence of H-flux and general condensates using the formalism of G-structures and intrinsic torsion. We revisit the examples based on nearly-Kaehler coset spaces and show that supersymmetric solutions, where the Bianchi identity is satisfied, can be obtained when both gaugino and dilatino condensates are present.

Renormalizable Theories from Fuzzy Higher Dimensions

We consider gauge theories defined in higher dimensions where the extra dimensions form a fuzzy space (a finite matrix manifold). We reinterpret these gauge theories as four-dimensional theories with Kaluza-Klein modes. We then perform a generalized `a la Forgacs-Manton dimensional reduction. We emphasize some striking features emerging such as (i) the appearance of non-abelian gauge theories in four dimensions starting from an abelian gauge theory in higher dimensions, (ii) the fact that the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the theory takes place entirely in the extra dimensions and (iii) the renormalizability of the theory both in higher as well as in four dimensions.

$μ$-term due to the non-universal supersymmetry breaking and the Higgs mass

We propose a solution to the $μ$-problem due to the non-universal soft supersymmetry breaking in a class of supersymmetric extensions of the SM with an extra U(1) and the NMSSM. Our scenario resembles an earlier one which has been proposed as a solution to the $μ$-problem in the framework of similar models but it has rather different features from that. Theoretically crucial points in the present scenario are the realization of the required non-universal soft supersymmetry breaking parameters and the concern to avoid the vacuum instability due to tadpoles. We discuss them in some detail. In particular, on the non-universal soft supersymmetry breaking we discuss the superstring and the field theory with reduction of couplings possibilities. We also study the weak scale radiative symmetry breaking in the considered models and estimate the upper mass bound of the lightest neutral Higgs scalar. The latter tends to be smaller in the present scenario as compared to the previous one.

Running couplings in extra dimensions

The regularization scheme dependence of running couplings in extra compactified dimensions is discussed. We examine several regularization schemes explicitly in order to analyze the scheme dependence of the Kaluza-Klein threshold effects, which cause the power law running, in the case of the scalar theory in five dimensions with one dimension compactified. It is found that in 1-loop order, the net difference in the running of the coupling among the different schemes is reduced to be rather small after finite renormalization. An additional comment concerns the running couplings in the warped extra dimensions which are found to be regularization dependent above TeV scale.

Strongly-interacting fermions from a higher-dimensional unified gauge theory

The method of coset-space dimensional reduction is employed in order to proceed from a gauged E_8 * E_8' unified theory defined in 10 dimensions to 4 dimensions. The resulting theory comprises the Standard Model along with a strongly-interacting fermion sector which breaks the electroweak symmetry dynamically at the right scale.

Kaluza-Klein Thresholds and Regularization (In)dependence

We present a method to control the regularization scheme dependence in the running of couplings in Kaluza-Klein theories. Specifically we consider the scalar theory in five dimensions, assuming that one dimension is compactified and we study various regularization schemes in order to analyze concretely the regularization scheme dependence of the Kaluza-Klein threshold effects. We find that in one-loop order, although the $β$-functions are different for the different schemes, the net difference in the running of the coupling among the different schemes is very small for the entire range of energies. Our results have been extended to include more than one radii, and the gauge coupling unification is re-examined. Strings are also used as a regulator. We obtain a particular regularization of effective field theory which can accurately describe the string Kaluza-Klein threshold effects.

Running of Soft Parameters in Extra Space-Time Dimensions

The evolution of the parameters including those in the soft supersymmetry-breaking (SSB) sector is studied in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with a certain set of Kaluza-Klein towers which has been recently considered by Dienes et al. We use the continuous Wilson renormalizaion group technique to derive the matching condition between the effective, renormalizable and original, unrenormalizable theories. We investigate whether the assumption on a large compactification radius in the model is consistent with the gauge coupling unification, the $b-τ$ unification and the radiative breaking of the electroweak gauge symmetry with the universal SSB terms. We calculate the superpartner spectrum under the assumption of the universal SSB parameters to find differences between the model and the MSSM.

Infrared Behaviour of Softly Broken SQCD and Its Dual

Applying the recently obtained results on the renormalization of soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters, we investigate the infrared behaviour of the softly broken supersymmetric QCD as well as its dual theory in the conformal window. Under general assumptions on $β$-functions, it is shown that the soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters asymptotically vanish in the infrared limit so that superconformal symmetry in softly broken supersymmetric QCD and in its dual theory revives at the infrared fixed point, provided the soft scalar masses satisfy certain renormalization group invariant relations. If these relations are not satisfied, there exist marginal operators in both theories that lead to the breaking of supersymmetry and also colour symmetry.

Superconformal N=1 Gauge Theories, beta-Function Invariants and their Behavior under Seiberg Duality

In this paper we discuss some aspects of the behavior of superconformal N=1 models under Seiberg's duality. Our claim is that if an electric gauge theory is superconformal on some marginal subspace of all coupling constants then its magnetic dual must be also superconformal on a corresponding moduli space of dual couplings. However this does not imply that the magnetic dual of a completely finite N=1 gauge theory is again finite. Moreover we generalize this statement conjecturing that also for non-superconformal N=1 models the determinant of the beta-function equations is invariant under Seiberg duality. During the course of this investigation we construct some superconformal N=1 gauge theories which were not yet discussed before.

N=1 Finite Unified Theories - Predictions and Dualities

N = 1, all-loop Finite Unified Theories (FUTs) are very interesting not only since they realize an old theoretical dream, but also due the remarkable predictive power of particular models as well as for providing candidates that might shed light in non-perturbative Physics. Here we discuss (a) the recent developments concerning the soft supersymmetry breaking (SSB) sector of these theories and the resulting predictions in very interesting realistic models, and (b) the results of a recent search for duals of N=1, all-loop FUTs.
