Secrecy Analysis of Random MIMO Wireless Networks over $α$-$μ$ Fading Channels

In this paper, we investigate the secrecy performance of stochastic MIMO wireless networks over small-scale $α$-$μ$ fading channels, where both the legitimate receivers and eavesdroppers are distributed with two independent homogeneous Poisson point processes (HPPPs). Specifically, accounting for the presence of non-colluding eavesdroppers, secrecy performance metrics, including the connection outage probability (COP), the probability of non-zero secrecy capacity (PNZ) and ergodic secrecy capacity, are derived regarding the $k$-th nearest/best user cases. The index for the $k$-th nearest user is extracted from the ordering, in terms of the distances between transmitters and receivers, whereas that for the $k$-th best user is based on the combined effects of path-loss and small-scale fading. In particular, the probability density functions (PDFs) and cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) of the composite channel gain, for the $k$-th nearest and best user, are characterized, respectively. Benefiting from these results, closed-form representations of the COP, PNZ and ergodic secrecy capacity are subsequently obtained. Furthermore, a limit on the maximal number of the best-ordered users is also computed, for a given secrecy outage constraint. Finally, numerical results are provided to verify the correctness of our derivations. Additionally, the effects of fading parameters, path-loss exponent, and density ratios are also analyzed.

Resource Allocation in SWIPT Networks under a Non-Linear Energy Harvesting Model: Power Efficiency, User Fairness, and Channel Non-Reciprocity

This paper considers a multi-user simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system with a non-linear energy harvesting model, in which a multi-antenna base station (BS) estimates the downlink channel state information (CSI) via uplink pilots. Each single-antenna user is equipped with a power splitter. Three crucial issues on resource management for this system include: (i) power-efficient improvement, (ii) user-fairness guarantee, and (iii) non-ideal channel reciprocity effect mitigation. Potentially, a resource allocation scheme to address jointly such issues can be devised by using the framework of multi-objective optimization. However, the resulting problem might be complex to solve since the three issues hold different characteristics. Therefore, we propose a novel method to design the resource allocation scheme. In particular, the principle of our method relies on structuralizing mathematically the issues into a cross-layer multi-level optimization problem. On this basis, we then devise solving algorithms and closed-form solutions. Moreover, to instantly adapt the CSI changes in practice while reducing computational burdens, we propose a closed-form suboptimal solution to tackle the problem. Finally, we provide numerical results to show the achievable performance gains using the optimal and suboptimal solutions, and then validate the proposed resource allocation scheme.

Cooperation in NOMA Networks Under Limited User-to-User Communications: Solution and Analysis

This paper proposes a new communication protocol for a cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system. In this system, based on users' channel conditions, each two NOMA users are paired to reduce system complexity. In this concern, the user with a better channel condition decodes and then forwards messages received from the source to the user with a worse channel condition. In particular, the direct link between the paired users is assumed to be unavailable due to the weak transmission conditions. To overcome this issue, we propose a new cooperative NOMA protocol in which an amplify-and-forward (AF) relay is employed to help the user-to-user communications. To evaluate the proposed protocol, the exact closed-form expressions of outage probability (OP) at the two paired users are derived. Based on the analysis of the OP, we further examine the system throughput in a delay-sensitive transmission mode. Finally, our analytical results verified by Monte-Carlo simulation show that the proposed protocol is efficient in enhancing the performance of NOMA system when the user-to-user communications is limited.

RF Wireless Power Transfer: Regreening Future Networks

Green radio communication is an emerging topic since the overall footprint of information and communication technology (ICT) services is predicted to triple between 2007 and 2020. Given this research line, energy harvesting (EH) and wireless power transfer (WPT) networks can be evaluated as promising approaches. In this paper, an overview of recent trends for future green networks on the platforms of EH and WPT is provided. By rethinking the application of radio frequency (RF)-WPT, a new concept, namely green RF-WTP, is introduced. Accordingly, opening challenges and promising combinations among current technologies, such as small-cell, millimeter (mm)-wave, and Internet of Things (IoT) networks, are discussed in details to seek solutions for the question with how to re-green the future networks?

Cross-Layer Authentication Protocol Design for Ultra-Dense 5G HetNets

Creating a secure environment for communications is becoming a significantly challenging task in 5G Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets) given the stringent latency and high capacity requirements of 5G networks. This is particularly factual knowing that the infrastructure tends to be highly diversified especially with the continuous deployment of small cells. In fact, frequent handovers in these cells introduce unnecessarily recurring authentications leading to increased latency. In this paper, we propose a software-defined wireless network (SDWN)-enabled fast cross-authentication scheme which combines non-cryptographic and cryptographic algorithms to address the challenges of latency and weak security. Initially, the received radio signal strength vectors at the mobile terminal (MT) is used as a fingerprinting source to generate an unpredictable secret key. Subsequently, a cryptographic mechanism based upon the authentication and key agreement protocol by employing the generated secret key is performed in order to improve the confidentiality and integrity of the authentication handover. Further, we propose a radio trusted zone database aiming to enhance the frequent authentication of radio devices which are present in the network. In order to reduce recurring authentications, a given covered area is divided into trusted zones where each zone contains more than one small cell, thus permitting the MT to initiate a single authentication request per zone, even if it keeps roaming between different cells. The proposed scheme is analyzed under different attack scenarios and its complexity is compared with cryptographic and non-cryptographic approaches to demonstrate its security resilience and computational efficiency.

Green Cell-less Design for RF-Wireless Power Transfer Networks

This paper studies a new concept so-called green cell-less radio frequency (RF) wireless power transfer (WPT) networks. We consider a scenario in which multiple indoor access points (APs) equipped with outdoor energy harvesters are connected with a central control unit via backhaul links. Further, such APs exploit the harnessed green energy to recharge wirelessly indoor devices under the coordination of the control unit. Considering the network, we focus on AP selection and beamforming optimization to maximize the total energy harvesting (EH) rate. The resulting mathematical problem has the form of mixed-integer optimization that is intractable to solve. Thus, we propose an algorithm to tackle this difficulty. Through numerical results, we show the advantages of the cell-less design over the conventional small-cell one to validate our ideas. In particular, the issue on safety requirements of human exposure to RF radiation is discussed. Finally, potential future research is provided.

A Joint Code-Frequency Index Modulation for Low-complexity, High Spectral and Energy Efficiency Communications

A relatively simple low complexity multiuser communication system based on simultaneous code and frequency index modulation (CFIM) is proposed in this paper. The proposed architecture reduces the emitted energy at the transmitter as well as the peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)- based schemes functions without relegating data rate. In the scheme we introduce here, we implement a joint code- frequency- index modulation (CFIM) in order to enhance spectral and energy efficiencies. After introducing and analysing the structure with respect to latter metrics, we derive closed-form expressions of the bit error rate (BER) performance over Rayleigh fading channels and we validate the outcome by simulation results. Simulation are used verify the analyses and show that, in terms of BER, the proposed CFIM outperforms the existing index modulation (IM) based systems such as spatial modulation (SM), OFDM-IM and OFDM schemes significantly. To better exhibit the particularities of the proposed scheme, PAPR, complexity, spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) are thoroughly examined. Results indicate a high SE while ensuring an elevated reliability compared to the aforementioned systems. In addition, the concept is extended to synchronous multiuser communication networks, where full functionality is obtained. With the characteristics demonstrated in this work, the proposed system would constitute an exceptional nominee for Internet of Things (IoT) applications where low-complexity, low-power consumption and high data rate are paramount.

Experimental Investigation of Optimum Beam Size for FSO Uplink

In this paper, the effect of transmitter beam size on the performance of free space optical (FSO) communication has been determined experimentally. Irradiance profile for varying turbulence strength is obtained using optical turbulence generating (OTG) chamber inside laboratory environment. Based on the results, an optimum beam size is investigated using the semi-analytical method. Moreover, the combined effects of atmospheric scintillation and beam wander induced pointing errors are considered in order to determine the optimum beam size that minimizes the bit error rate (BER) of the system for a fixed transmitter power and link length. The results show that the optimum beam size increases with the increase in zenith angle but has negligible effect with the increase in fade threshold level at low turbulence levels and has a marginal effect at high turbulence levels. Finally, the obtained outcome is useful for FSO system design and BER performance analysis.

Optical Communication in Space: Challenges and Mitigation Techniques

In recent years, free space optical communication has gained significant importance owing to its unique features: large bandwidth, license-free spectrum, high data rate, easy and quick deployability, less power and low mass requirements. FSO communication uses the optical carrier in the near infrared band to establish either terrestrial links within the Earth's atmosphere or inter-satellite or deep space links or ground-to-satellite or satellite-to-ground links. However, despite the great potential of FSO communication, its performance is limited by the adverse effects viz., absorption, scattering, and turbulence of the atmospheric channel. This paper presents a comprehensive survey on various challenges faced by FSO communication system for ground-to-satellite or satellite-to-ground and inter-satellite links. It also provides details of various performance mitigation techniques in order to have high link availability and reliability. The first part of the paper will focus on various types of impairments that pose a serious challenge to the performance of optical communication system for ground-to-satellite or satellite-to-ground and inter-satellite links. The latter part of the paper will provide the reader with an exhaustive review of various techniques both at physical layer as well as at the other layers i.e., link, network or transport layer to combat the adverse effects of the atmosphere. It also uniquely presents a recently developed technique using orbital angular momentum for utilizing the high capacity advantage of the optical carrier in case of space-based and near-Earth optical communication links. This survey provides the reader with comprehensive details on the use of space-based optical backhaul links in order to provide high-capacity and low-cost backhaul solutions.

Downlink Power Optimization for Heterogeneous Networks with Time Reversal-based Transmission under Backhaul Limitation

In this paper, we investigate an application of two different beamforming techniques and propose a novel downlink power minimization scheme for a two-tier heterogeneous network (HetNet) model. In this context, we employ time reversal (TR) technique to a femtocell base station (FBS) whereas we assume that a macrocell base station (MBS) uses a zero-forcing-based algorithm and the communication channels are subject to frequency selective fading. Additionally, HetNet's backhaul connection is unable to support a sufficient throughput for signaling information exchange between two tiers. Given the considered HetNet model, a downlink power minimization scheme is proposed, and closed-form expressions concerning the optimal solution are provided, taking this constraint into account. Furthermore, considering imperfect channel estimation at TR-employed femtocell, a worst-case robust power minimization problem is formulated. By devising TR worst-case analysis, this robust problem is transformed into an equivalent formulation that is tractable to solve. The results presented in our paper show that the TR technique outperforms the zero-forcing one in the perspective of beamforming methods for femtocell working environments. Finally, we validate the proposed power loading strategy for both cases of perfect and imperfect channel estimations.

On the Approximate Analysis of Energy Detection over n*Rayleigh Fading Channels through Cooperative Spectrum Sensing

In this letter, we consider the problem of energy detection of unknown signals in an intervehicular communication (IVC) system over n*Rayleigh fading channels (also known as cascaded Rayleigh). Novel tight approximations for the probability of detection are derived for the no-diversity and the maximum ratio combining (MRC)) diversity schemes. Moreover, we investigate the system performance when cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) is considered with and without imperfect reporting channels. The analytical results show that the detection reliability is decreased as the fading severity parameter n increases but reliability is substantially improved when CSS employs MRC schemes.

On the Performance of Multihop-Intervehicular Communications Systems over n*Rayleigh Fading Channels

We investigate the performance of multihop-intervehicular communication systems with regenerative and nonregenerative relaying. We consider the so-called "n*Rayleigh distribution" as an adequate multipath fading channel model for vehicle-to-vehicle communication scenarios. We derive a novel approximation for the outage probability of maximum ratio combining (MRC) diversity reception. In addition, we analyze the amount of fading and optimize the power allocation for the investigated scenario. Numerical results show that regenerative systems are more efficient than nonregenerative systems when the cascading order (n) is small; however, for large n, our results demonstrate that the performance of both relaying techniques is rather similar.

FSO communication uses optical carrier in the near infrared (IR) and visible band to establish either terrestrial links within the Earths atmosphere or inter-satellite or deep space links or ground to satellite or satellite to ground links. However, despite of great potential of FSO communication, its performance is limited by the adverse effects (viz., absorption, scattering and turbulence) of the atmospheric channel. It also presents a recently developed technique in FSO system using orbital angular momentum to combat the effect of atmospheric turbulence.

Analysis of Network Coding Schemes for Differential Chaos Shift Keying Communication System

In this paper we design network coding schemes for Differential Chaos Shift Keying (DCSK) modulation. In this work, non-coherent chaos-based communication system is used due to its simplicity and robustness to multipath propagation effects, while dispensing with any channel state information knowledge at the receiver. We propose a relay network using network coding and DCSK, where we first present a Physical layer Network Coding (PNC) scheme with two users, $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$, sharing the same spreading code and bandwidth, while synchronously transmitting their signals to the relay node $\mathcal{R}$. We show that the main drawback of this design in multipath channels is the high level of interference in the resultant signal, which severely degrades the system performance. Hence, in order to address this problem, we propose two coding schemes, which separate the users' signals in the frequency or the time domains. We show also in this paper that the performance of the Analog Network Coding (ANC) with DCSK modulation suffers from the same interference problem as the PNC scheme. We present the analytical bit error rate performance for multipath Rayleigh fading channel for the different scenarios and we analyse these schemes in terms of complexity, throughput and link spectral efficiency.

Analog Network Coding for Multi-User Spread-Spectrum Communication Systems

This work presents another look at an analog network coding scheme for multi-user spread-spectrum communication systems. Our proposed system combines coding and cooperation between a relay and users to boost the throughput and to exploit interference. To this end, each pair of users, $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$, that communicate with each other via a relay $\mathcal{R}$ shares the same spreading code. The relay has two roles, it synchronizes network transmissions and it broadcasts the combined signals received from users. From user $\mathcal{B}$'s point of view, the signal is decoded, and then, the data transmitted by user $\mathcal{A}$ is recovered by subtracting user $\mathcal{B}$'s own data. We derive the analytical performance of this system for an additive white Gaussian noise channel with the presence of multi-user interference, and we confirm its accuracy by simulation.

Lower Bound on the BER of a Decode-and-Forward Relay Network Under Chaos Shift Keying Communication System

This paper carries out the first-ever investigation of the analysis of a cooperative Decode-and-Forward (DF) relay network with Chaos Shift Keying (CSK) modulation. The performance analysis of DF-CSK in this paper takes into account the dynamical nature of chaotic signal, which is not similar to a conventional binary modulation performance computation methodology. The expression of a lower bound bit error rate (BER) is derived in order to investigate the performance of the cooperative system under independently and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Gaussian fading wireless environments. The effect of the non-periodic nature of chaotic sequence leading to a non constant bit energy of the considered modulation is also investigated. A computation approach of the BER expression based on the probability density function of the bit energy of the chaotic sequence, channel distribution, and number of relays is presented. Simulation results prove the accuracy of our BER computation methodology.

Design and Analysis of a Multi-Carrier Differential Chaos Shift Keying Communication System

A new Multi-Carrier Differential Chaos Shift Keying (MC-DCSK) modulation is presented in this paper. The system endeavors to provide a good trade-off between robustness, energy efficiency and high data rate, while still being simple compared to conventional multi-carrier spread spectrum systems. This system can be seen as a parallel extension of the DCSK modulation where one chaotic reference sequence is transmitted over a predefined subcarrier frequency. Multiple modulated data streams are transmitted over the remaining subcarriers. This transmitter structure increases the spectral efficiency of the conventional DCSK system and uses less energy. The receiver design makes this system easy to implement where no radio frequency (RF) delay circuit is needed to demodulate received data. Various system design parameters are discussed throughout the paper, including the number of subcarriers, the spreading factor, and the transmitted energy. Once the design is explained, the bit error rate performance of the MC-DCSK system is computed and compared to the conventional DCSK system under an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh channels. Simulation results confirm the advantages of this new hybrid design.

In this paper, a multi user Multi-Carrier Differential Chaos Shift Keying (MC-DCSK) modulation is presented. The system endeavors to provide a good trade-off between robustness, energy efficiency and high data rate, while still being simple. In this architecture of MC-DCSK system, for each user, chaotic reference sequence is transmitted over a predefined subcarrier frequency. Multiple modulated data streams are transmitted over the remaining subcarriers allocated for each user. This transmitter structure saves energy and increases the spectral efficiency of the conventional DCSK system.
