Marginally trapped meridian surfaces of parabolic type in the four-dimensional Minkowski space

A marginally trapped surface in the four-dimensional Minkowski space is a spacelike surface whose mean curvature vector is lightlike at each point. We introduce meridian surfaces of parabolic type as one-parameter systems of meridians of a rotational hypersurface with lightlike axis in Minkowski 4-space and find their basic invariants. We find all marginally trapped meridian surfaces of parabolic type and give a geometric construction of these surfaces.

Time-like Weingarten surfaces with real principal curvatures in the three-dimensional Minkowski space and their natural partial differential equations

We study time-like surfaces in the three-dimensional Minkowski space with diagonalizable second fundamental form. On any time-like W-surface we introduce locally natural principal parameters and prove that such a surface is determined uniquely (up to motion) by a special invariant function, which satisfies a natural non-linear partial differential equation. This result can be interpreted as a solution of the Lund-Regge reduction problem for time-like W-surfaces with real principal curvatures in Minkowski space. We apply this theory to linear fractional time-like W-surfaces and obtain the natural partial differential equations describing them.

Natural PDE's of Linear Fractional Weingarten surfaces in Euclidean Space

We prove that the natural principal parameters on a given Weingarten surface are also natural principal parameters for the parallel surfaces of the given one. As a consequence of this result we obtain that the natural PDE of any Weingarten surface is the natural PDE of its parallel surfaces. We show that the linear fractional Weingarten surfaces are exactly the surfaces satisfying a linear relation between their three curvatures. Our main result is classification of the natural PDE's of Weingarten surfaces with linear relation between their curvatures.

Space-like Weingarten surfaces in the three-dimensional Minkowski space and their natural partial differential equations

We apply this theory to linear fractional space-like W-surfaces and obtain the natural non-linear partial differential equations describing them. We obtain a characterization of space-like surfaces, whose curvatures satisfy a linear relation, by means of their natural partial differential equations. We obtain the ten natural PDE's describing all linear fractional space-like W-surfaces.

Timelike surfaces with zero mean curvature in Minkowski 4-space

On any timelike surface with zero mean curvature in the four-dimensional Minkowski space we introduce special geometric (canonical) parameters and prove that the Gauss curvature and the normal curvature of the surface satisfy a system of two natural partial differential equations. Conversely, any two solutions to this system determine a unique (up to a motion) timelike surface with zero mean curvature so that the given parameters are canonical. We find all timelike surfaces with zero mean curvature in the class of rotational surfaces of Moore type. These examples give rise to a one-parameter family of solutions to the system of natural partial differential equations describing timelike surfaces with zero mean curvature.

Hermitian Manifolds with Flat Associated Connection

A local classification of the Hermitian manifolds with flat associated connection is given. Hermitian manifolds admitting locally a conformal metric with flat associated connection are characterized by a curvature identity. Locally conformal Kaehler manifolds as well as Hermitian surfaces with vanishing associated conformal curvature tensor are characterized as locally conformal to a Kaehler manifold of constant holomorphic sectional curvatures.

An invariant theory of marginally trapped surfaces in the four-dimensional Minkowski space

A marginally trapped surface in the four-dimensional Minkowski space is a spacelike surface whose mean curvature vector is lightlike at each point. We associate a geometrically determined moving frame field to such a surface and using the derivative formulas for this frame field we obtain seven invariant functions. Our main theorem states that these seven invariants determine the surface up to a motion in Minkowski space. We introduce meridian surfaces as one-parameter systems of meridians of a rotational hypersurface in the four-dimensional Minkowski space. We find all marginally trapped meridian surfaces.

Invariants and bonnet-type theorem for surfaces in $\r^4$

In the tangent plane at any point of a surface in the four-dimensional Euclidean space we consider an invariant linear map of Weingarten-type and find a geometrically determined moving frame field. Writing derivative formulas of Frenet-type for this frame field, we obtain eight invariant functions. We prove a fundamental theorem of Bonnet-type, stating that these eight invariants under some natural conditions determine the surface up to a motion. We show that the basic geometric classes of surfaces in the four-dimensional Euclidean space, determined by conditions on their invariants, can be interpreted in terms of the properties of two geometric figures: the tangent indicatrix, which is a conic in the tangent plane, and the normal curvature ellipse. We construct a family of surfaces with flat normal connection.

A Classification of Riemannian manifolds of quasi-constant sectional curvatures

Riemannian manifolds of quasi-constant sectional curvatures (QC-manifolds) are divided into two basic classes: with positive or negative horizontal sectional curvatures. We prove that the Riemannian QC-manifolds with positive horizontal sectional curvatures are locally equivalent to canal hypersurfaces in Euclidean space, while the Riemannian QC-manifolds with negative horizontal sectional curvatures are locally equivalent to canal space-like hypersurfaces in Minkowski space. We prove that the local theory of conformally flat Riemannian manifolds, which can be locally isometrically embedded as hypersurfaces in Euclidean or Minkowski space, is equivalent to the local theory of Riemannian QC-manifolds. These results give a local geometric classification of conformally flat hypersurfaces in Euclidean space and conformally flat space-like hypersurfaces in Minkowski space.

Chen Rotational Surfaces of Hyperbolic or Elliptic Type in the Four-dimensional Minkowski Space

We study the class of spacelike surfaces in the four-dimensional Minkowski space whose mean curvature vector at any point is a non-zero spacelike vector or timelike vector. These surfaces are determined up to a motion by eight invariant functions satisfying some natural conditions. The subclass of Chen surfaces is characterized by the condition one of these invariants to be zero. In the present paper we describe all Chen spacelike rotational surfaces of hyperbolic or elliptic type.

An Invariant Theory of Spacelike Surfaces in the Four-dimensional Minkowski Space

We consider spacelike surfaces in the four-dimensional Minkowski space and introduce geometrically an invariant linear map of Weingarten-type in the tangent plane at any point of the surface under consideration. This allows us to introduce principal lines and an invariant moving frame field. Writing derivative formulas of Frenet-type for this frame field, we obtain eight invariant functions. We prove a fundamental theorem of Bonnet-type, stating that these eight invariants under some natural conditions determine the surface up to a motion. We show that the basic geometric classes of spacelike surfaces in the four-dimensional Minkowski space, determined by conditions on their invariants, can be interpreted in terms of the properties of the two geometric figures: the tangent indicatrix, and the normal curvature ellipse. We apply our theory to a class of spacelike general rotational surfaces.

Curvature properties and isotropic planes of Riemannian and almost Hermitian manifolds of indefinite metrics

We study two types of isotropic planes: weakly isotropic and strongly isotropic planes. We prove that a Riemannian manifold of indefinite metric is conformally flat if and only if its curvature tensor vanishes on all the strongly isotropic planes. We specialize the plane axiom for Riemannian manifolds of indefinite metrics. We show that manifolds satisfying plane axiom of weakly (strongly) isotropic planes are of constant sectional curvature (conformaly flat). Further we study analogous problems on almost Hermitian manifolds of indefinite metrics.

Invariants of Lines on Surfaces in $\R^4$

Considering the tangent plane at a point to a surface in the four-dimensional Euclidean space, we find an invariant of a pair of two tangents in this plane. If this invariant is zero, the two tangents are said to be conjugate. When the two tangents coincide with a given tangent, then we obtain the normal curvature of this tangent. Asymptotic tangents (curves) are characterized by zero normal curvature. Considering the invariant of the pair of a given tangent and its orthogonal one, we introduce the geodesic torsion of this tangent. We obtain that principal tangents (curves) are characterized by zero geodesic torsion. The invariants $\varkappa$ and $k$ are introduced as the symmetric functions of the two principal normal curvatures. The geometric meaning of the semi-sum $\varkappa$ of the principal normal curvatures is equal (up to a sign) to the curvature of the normal connection of the surface. The number of asymptotic tangents at a point of the surface is determined by the sign of the invariant $k$. In the case $k=0$ there exists a one-parameter family of asymptotic lines, which are principal. We find examples of such surfaces ($k=0$) in the class of the general rotational surfaces (in the sense of Moore). The principal asymptotic lines on these surfaces are helices in the four-dimensional Euclidean space.

Geometric interpretation of the invariants of a surface in R^4 via the tangent indicatrix and the normal curvature ellipse

At any point of a surface in the four-dimensional Euclidean space we consider the geometric configuration consisting of two figures: the tangent indicatrix, which is a conic in the tangent plane, and the normal curvature ellipse. We show that the basic geometric classes of surfaces in the four-dimensional Euclidean space, determined by conditions on their invariants, can be interpreted in terms of the properties of the two geometric figures. We give some non-trivial examples of surfaces from the classes in consideration.

Minimal Surfaces in the Three-Dimensional Sphere and Minimal Hypersurfaces of Type Number Two

We introduce canonical principal parameters on any strongly regular minimal surface in the three dimensional sphere and prove that any such a surface is determined up to a motion by its normal curvature function satisfying the Sinh-Poisson equation. We obtain a classification theorem for bi-umbilical hypersurfaces of type number two. We prove that any minimal hypersurface of type number two with involutive distribution is generated by a minimal surface in the three-dimensional Euclidean space, or in the three dimensional sphere. Thus we prove that the theory of minimal hypersurfaces of type number two with involutive distribution is locally equivalent to the theory of minimal surfaces in the three dimensional Euclidean space or in the three-dimensional sphere.

Minimal Surfaces in the Four-Dimensional Euclidean Space

We prove that the Gauss curvature and the curvature of the normal connection of any minimal surface in the four dimensional Euclidean space satisfy an inequality, which generates two classes of minimal surfaces: minimal surfaces of general type and minimal super-conformal surfaces. We prove a Bonnet-type theorem for strongly regular minimal surfaces of general type in terms of their invariants. We introduce canonical parameters on strongly regular minimal surfaces of general type and prove that any such a surface is determined up to a motion by two invariant functions satisfying a system of two natural partial differential equations. On any minimal surface of the basic class of non strongly regular minimal surfaces we define canonical parameters and prove that any such a surface is determined up to a motion by two invariant functions of one variable satisfying a system of two natural ordinary differential equations. We find a geometric description of this class of non strongly regular minimal surfaces.
