Discrete Spectrum of Quantum Hall Effect Hamiltonians II. Periodic Edge Potentials

We consider the unperturbed operator $H_0: = (-i \nabla - {\bf A})^2 + W$, self-adjoint in $L^2({\mathbb R}^2)$. Here ${\bf A}$ is a magnetic potential which generates a constant magnetic field $b>0$, and the edge potential $W = \bar{W}$ is a ${\mathcal T}$-periodic non constant bounded function depending only on the first coordinate $x \in {\mathbb R}$ of $(x,y) \in {\mathbb R}^2$. Then the spectrum $σ(H_0)$ of $H_0$ has a band structure, the band functions are $b {\mathcal T}$-periodic, and generically there are infinitely many open gaps in $σ(H_0)$. We establish explicit sufficient conditions which guarantee that a given band of $σ(H_0)$ has a positive length, and all the extremal points of the corresponding band function are non degenerate. Under these assumptions we consider the perturbed operators $H_{\pm} = H_0 \pm V$ where the electric potential $V \in L^{\infty}({\mathbb R}^2)$ is non-negative and decays at infinity. We investigate the asymptotic distribution of the discrete spectrum of $H_\pm$ in the spectral gaps of $H_0$. We introduce an effective Hamiltonian which governs the main asymptotic term; this Hamiltonian could be interpreted as a 1D Schroedinger operator with infinite-matrix-valued potential. Further, we restrict our attention on perturbations $V$ of compact support. We find that there are infinitely many discrete eigenvalues in any open gap in the spectrum of $σ(H_0)$, and the convergence of these eigenvalues to the corresponding spectral edge is asymptotically Gaussian.

Discrete Spectrum of Quantum Hall Effect Hamiltonians I. Monotone Edge Potential

We consider the unperturbed operator $H_0 : = (-i \nabla - A)^2 + W$, self-adjoint in $L^2(\R^2)$. Here $A$ is a magnetic potential which generates a constant magnetic field $b>0$, and the edge potential $W$ is a non-decreasing non constant bounded function depending only on the first coordinate $x \in \R$ of $(x,y) \in \R^2$. Then the spectrum of $H_0$ has a band structure and is absolutely continuous; moreover, the assumption $\lim_{x \to \infty}(W(x) - W(-x)) < 2b$ implies the existence of infinitely many spectral gaps for $H_0$. We consider the perturbed operators $H_{\pm} = H_0 \pm V$ where the electric potential $V \in L^{\infty}(\R^2)$ is non-negative and decays at infinity. We investigate the asymptotic distribution of the discrete spectrum of $H_\pm$ in the spectral gaps of $H_0$. We introduce an effective Hamiltonian which governs the main asymptotic term; this Hamiltonian involves a pseudo-differential operator with generalized anti-Wick symbol equal to $V$. Further, we restrict our attention on perturbations $V$ of compact support and constant sign. We establish a geometric condition on the support of $V$ which guarantees the finiteness of the eigenvalues of $H_{\pm}$ in any spectral gap of $H_0$. In the case where this condition is violated, we show that, generically, the convergence of the infinite series of eigenvalues of $H_+$ (resp. $H_-$) to the left (resp. right) edge of a given spectral gap, is Gaussian.

The Fate of the Landau Levels under Perturbations of Constant Sign

We show that the Landau levels cease to be eigenvalues if we perturb the 2D Schrödinger operator with constant magnetic field, by bounded electric potentials of fixed sign. We also show that, if the perturbation is not of fixed sign, then any Landau level may be an eigenvalue of arbitrary large, finite or infinite, multiplicity of the perturbed problem.

Dynamical resonances and SSF singularities for a magnetic Schroedinger operator

We consider the Hamiltonian $H$ of a 3D spinless non-relativistic quantum particle subject to parallel constant magnetic and non-constant electric field. The operator $H$ has infinitely many eigenvalues of infinite multiplicity embedded in its continuous spectrum. We perturb $H$ by appropriate scalar potentials $V$ and investigate the transformation of these embedded eigenvalues into resonances. First, we assume that the electric potentials are dilation-analytic with respect to the variable along the magnetic field, and obtain an asymptotic expansion of the resonances as the coupling constant $\varkappa$ of the perturbation tends to zero. Further, under the assumption that the Fermi Golden Rule holds true, we deduce estimates for the time evolution of the resonance states with and without analyticity assumptions; in the second case we obtain these results as a corollary of suitable Mourre estimates and a recent article of Cattaneo, Graf and Hunziker \cite{cgh}. Next, we describe sets of perturbations $V$ for which the Fermi Golden Rule is valid at each embedded eigenvalue of $H$; these sets turn out to be dense in various suitable topologies. Finally, we assume that $V$ decays fast enough at infinity and is of definite sign, introduce the Krein spectral shift function for the operator pair $(H+V, H)$, and study its singularities at the energies which coincide with eigenvalues of infinite multiplicity of the unperturbed operator $H$.

Spectral Properties of a Magnetic Quantum Hamiltonian on a Strip

We consider a 2D Schroedinger operator H0 with constant magnetic field, on a strip of finite width. The spectrum of H0 is absolutely continuous, and contains a discrete set of thresholds. We perturb H0 by an electric potential V which decays in a suitable sense at infinity, and study the spectral properties of the perturbed operator H = H0 + V . First, we establish a Mourre estimate, and as a corollary prove that the singular continuous spectrum of H is empty, and any compact subset of the complement of the threshold set may contain at most a finite set of eigenvalues of H, each of them having a finite multiplicity. Next, we introduce the Krein spectral shift function (SSF) for the operator pair (H,H0). We show that this SSF is bounded on any compact subset of the complement of the threshold set, and is continuous away from the threshold set and the eigenvalues of H. The main results of the article concern the asymptotic behaviour of the SSF at the thresholds, which is described in terms of the SSF for a pair of effective Hamiltonians.

Lifshitz Tails in Constant Magnetic Fields

We consider the 2D Landau Hamiltonian $H$ perturbed by a random alloy-type potential, and investigate the Lifshitz tails, i.e. the asymptotic behavior of the corresponding integrated density of states (IDS) near the edges in the spectrum of $H$. If a given edge coincides with a Landau level, we obtain different asymptotic formulae for power-like, exponential sub-Gaussian, and super-Gaussian decay of the one-site potential. If the edge is away from the Landau levels, we impose a rational-flux assumption on the magnetic field, consider compactly supported one-site potentials, and formulate a theorem which is analogous to a result obtained in the case of a vanishing magnetic field.
