Perturbations of black holes with primary hair: time evolutions, quasinormal modes and greybody factors

In this work we study gravitational perturbations of black holes carrying primary scalar hair in shift-symmetric beyond-Horndeski gravity. By focusing on the axial sector, we study the geometric structure of the perturbation equations and perform time-domain evolutions both in the physical and in the effective metric descriptions, in order to quantify differences in the response characteristics of solutions with different hair. In the frequency domain, we then explore the QNM spectrum in the physical-metric formulation, thus verifying and extending existing approximate calculations derived in the effective-metric approach. We also compute the corresponding greybody factors and absorption cross-sections. Finally, we use localized deformations of the effective potential as a diagnostic of the relative stability of quasinormal frequencies and greybody-factor observables.

Parametrized quasinormal modes, greybody factors and their correspondence

We present a detailed study of quasinormal modes and greybody factors in the context of the parametrized quasinormal mode framework, in which modifications to general relativity are introduced as small corrections in the potential. We deduce the QNMs' and GBFs' dependence on the order of the modifications and their polynomial power. We also test the validity of the recently proposed QNM-GBF correspondence in the pQNM framework by inspecting the regime at which it breaks down.

Nonperturbative suppression of beyond-General-Relativity effects in quadratic gravity

Quadratic gravity is a well-motivated extension of general relativity~(GR) wherein the Einstein-Hilbert action is augmented by quadratic curvature terms. This theory is equivalent to GR in an effective-field-theory framework, while the two theories are different at the non-perturbative level. As we have recently shown, black holes in quadratic gravity have a rich linear response, including extra scalar, vector, and tensor quasinormal modes that can be excited in physical processes, even when the stationary solution is the same as in GR. Here, by studying the gravitational-wave emission from point particles plunging into a Schwarzschild black hole in quadratic gravity, we show that observable deviations from GR are exponentially suppressed in the GR limit. This provides a nonperturbative realization of the equivalence between quadratic gravity and GR predicted in the effective-field-theory framework.

Greybody factors in scalar-tensor gravity and beyond

In the framework of the beyond Horndeski action, we consider three subtheories that support scalarised black-hole solutions, and look for modified characteristics compared to GR. We first study the propagation of massless scalar and vector test fields in the fixed background of an analytical spherically symmetric black hole derived in the context of a parity-symmetric beyond Horndeski theory, and show that the profiles of the effective gravitational potentials, greybody factors, absorption cross sections and quasinormal frequencies exhibit distinct modifications as we move away from the GR limit. We then turn our attention to the perturbations of the gravitational field itself and adopt a full-theory analysis that takes into account the backreaction of the scalar field on the metric. Employing as background solutions scalarized black holes arising in the shift-symmetric Horndeski theory and in the quadratic-quartic-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory, we compute the greybody factors and quasinormal modes of the axial sector. In both theories, in direct correspondence to the form of the gravitational potential, which features multiple extremal points, we find modified (suppressed or nonmonotonic) greybody curves and altered quasinormal frequencies (smaller oscillating frequencies and larger damping times), especially as the hair-sourcing parameter increases.

Gravitational quasinormal modes of black holes in quadratic gravity

We study the gravitational perturbations of black holes in quadratic gravity, in which the Einstein-Hilbert term is supplemented by quadratic terms in the curvature tensor. In this class of theories, the Schwarzschild solution can coexist with modified black hole solutions, and both families are radially stable in a wide region of the parameter space. Here we study non-radial perturbations of both families of static, spherically symmetric black holes, computing the quasi-normal modes with axial parity and finding strong numerical evidence for the stability of these solutions under axial perturbations. The perturbation equations describe the propagation of a massless and a massive spin-two fields. We show that the Schwarzschild solution admits the same quasi-normal modes as in general relativity, together with new classes of modes corresponding to the massive spin-two degrees of freedom. The spectrum of the modified black hole solution has the same structure, but all modes are different from those of general relativity. We argue that both classes of modes can be excited in physical processes, suggesting that a characteristic signature of this theory is the presence of massive spin-two modes in the gravitational ringdown, even when the stationary solution is the same as in general relativity.

Probing time-dependent scalar wigs with extreme mass ratio inspirals

We investigate the gravitational wave emission from extreme mass ratio inspirals, key targets for the upcoming space-based detector LISA, considering the scenario where the lighter black hole in the binary is endowed by a long-lived, time-dependent scalar field configuration, known as a scalar wig. We develop a formalism to compute scalar perturbations for extreme mass ratio inspirals on circular orbits around Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes, and apply this framework to compute additional fluxes induced by the scalar wig as well as their dependence on the scalar field properties. Our computation provides strong indications that in this scenario the presence of the scalar field does not significantly affect the orbital motion and the gravitational waveform.

Quasinormal modes of hairy black holes in shift-symmetric theories

Alternative theories of gravity may be put to the test by making use of gravitational wave observations. Scalar-tensor theories provide a relatively simple framework that allows for compact object solutions with characteristics different from those of their general relativity counterparts. In shift-symmetric theories, black hole hair may arise when a linear coupling with the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) invariant is introduced. The effect of this coupling on the black hole quasinormal modes (QNMs) has been shown to be small, therefore limiting the observational interest in the theory. In general, however, one expects that additional shift-symmetric terms in the Lagrangian may be relevant, and indeed, it has been shown that they can have a nontrivial impact on the mass and scalar charge of the stationary solutions. In this work we explore the effect that various such terms have on the axial and polar QNMs of the hairy black hole solutions.

Axial perturbations of hairy black holes in generalised scalar-tensor theories

Gravitational wave observations can test the validity of General Relativity (GR) in the strong field regime. Certain classes of scalar-tensor theories indeed predict that compact objects can exhibit significant deviations from their GR counterparts. Here we explore the quasinormal modes of axial perturbations in spherically symmetric black holes in three such classes: (i) dilatonic black holes with an additional scalar-Ricci coupling (EdRGB), (ii) spontaneously scalarized black holes (EsRGB) with a quadratic coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant and the Ricci scalar, (iii) spontaneously scalarized black holes with a quadratic and a quartic coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant.

New perspectives on scalar fields in strong gravity

Recent developments in the field of gravitational physics, including the emergence of gravitational wave astronomy, black hole images, and more accurate telescopes, have allowed us to probe the strong-field character of gravity in a novel and revolutionary manner. This accessibility related to strong gravity brings into the foreground discussions about potential modifications to General Relativity (GR) that are particularly relevant in high curvature regimes. The most straightforward way to generalise GR is to consider an additional degree of freedom, in the form of a scalar field. In this thesis, we study generalised scalar tensor theories that predict interesting strong-gravity phenomenology. First, we review scalar no-hair theorems and the conditions under which they can be evaded. Next, we study solutions of black holes with scalar hair and the way in which higher derivative terms alter their properties. We then move our discussion to the spontaneously scalarized solutions, which only deviate from GR in the strong-field regime. We propose a model consistent with compact object scalarization, that allows for a GR attractor at late times, without fine-tuning (EsRGB model). Then, we proceed to study properties of black holes and neutron stars in this theory, revealing the interesting phenomenology of the solutions. We also study the radial stability of black holes in EsRGB and perform a preliminary analysis of the hyperbolicity of the problem. Finally, we take a look at the shadows of black holes and wormholes in theories with scalar fields, in light of recent observations of black hole shadows.

Black hole minimum size and scalar charge in shift-symmetric theories

It is known that, for shift-symmetric scalars, only a linear coupling with the Gauss-Bonnet invariant can introduce black hole hair. Such hairy black holes have a minimum mass, determined by the coupling of this interaction, and a scalar charge that is uniquely determined by their mass and spin for a fixed value of that coupling. Here we explore how additional shift-symmetric interactions affect the structure of the black hole, the value of the minimum mass, and the scalar charge.

Constraining modified gravity theories with scalar fields using black-hole images

We study a number of well-motivated theories of modified gravity with the common overarching theme that they predict the existence of compact objects such as black holes and wormholes endowed with scalar hair. We compute the shadow radius of the resulting compact objects and demonstrate that black hole images such as that of M87$^*$ or the more recent SgrA$^*$ by the Einstein Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration may provide a powerful way to constrain deviations of the metric functions from what is expected from general relativity (GR) solutions. We focus our attention on Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet (EsGB) theory with three well motivated couplings, including the dilatonic and $Z_2$ symmetric cases. We then analyze the shadow radius of black holes in the contest of the spontaneous scalarization scenario within EsGB theory with an additional coupling to the Ricci scalar (EsRGB). Finally, we turn our attention to spontaneous scalarization in the Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar (EMS) theory and demonstrate the impact of the parameters on the black hole shadow. Our results show that black hole imaging is an important tool for constraining black holes with scalar hair and for some part of the parameter space, black holes solutions with scalar hair may be marginally favoured compared to solutions of GR.

Stable spontaneously-scalarized black holes in generalized scalar-tensor theories

It has been shown that the synergy of a scalar field coupling with both the Ricci scalar and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant significantly affects the properties of scalarized black holes and neutron stars, including their domain of existence and the amount of scalar hair they carry. Here we study the radial stability of scalarized black-hole solutions. We demonstrate that they are stable against radial perturbations for Ricci couplings consistent with both a late-time cosmological attractor and the evasion of binary pulsar constraints. In addition, we investigate the effect of the Ricci coupling on the hyperbolicity of the equation governing linear, radial perturbations and show that it significantly reduces the region over which hyperbolicity is lost.

Neutron star scalarization with Gauss-Bonnet and Ricci scalar couplings

Spontaneous scalarization of neutron stars has been extensively studied in the Damour and Esposito-Far\`ese model, in which a scalar field couples to the Ricci scalar or, equivalently, to the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. However, scalarization of both black holes and neutron stars may also be triggered by a coupling of the scalar field to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. The case of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling has also received a lot of attention lately, but the synergy of the Ricci and Gauss-Bonnet couplings has been overlooked for neutron stars. Here, we show that combining both couplings has interesting effects on the properties of scalarized neutron stars, such as affecting their domain of existence or the amount of scalar charge they carry.

Black hole scalarization with Gauss-Bonnet and Ricci scalar couplings

Spontaneous scalarization is a gravitational phenomenon in which deviations from general relativity arise once a certain threshold in curvature is exceeded, while being entirely absent below that threshold. For black holes, scalarization is known to be triggered by a coupling between a scalar and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. A coupling with the Ricci scalar, which can trigger scalarization in neutron stars, is instead known to not contribute to the onset of black hole scalarization, and has so far been largely ignored in the literature when studying scalarized black holes. In this paper, we study the combined effect of both these couplings on black hole scalarization. We show that the Ricci coupling plays a significant role in the properties of scalarized solutions and their domain of existence. This work is an important step in the construction of scalarization models that evade binary pulsar constraints and have general relativity as a cosmological late-time attractor, while still predicting deviations from general relativity in black hole observations.

A Multimodal Framework for the Detection of Hateful Memes

An increasingly common expression of online hate speech is multimodal in nature and comes in the form of memes. Designing systems to automatically detect hateful content is of paramount importance if we are to mitigate its undesirable effects on the society at large. The detection of multimodal hate speech is an intrinsically difficult and open problem: memes convey a message using both images and text and, hence, require multimodal reasoning and joint visual and language understanding. In this work, we seek to advance this line of research and develop a multimodal framework for the detection of hateful memes. We improve the performance of existing multimodal approaches beyond simple fine-tuning and, among others, show the effectiveness of upsampling of contrastive examples to encourage multimodality and ensemble learning based on cross-validation to improve robustness. We furthermore analyze model misclassifications and discuss a number of hypothesis-driven augmentations and their effects on performance, presenting important implications for future research in the field. Our best approach comprises an ensemble of UNITER-based models and achieves an AUROC score of 80.53, placing us 4th on phase 2 of the 2020 Hateful Memes Challenge organized by Facebook.

The Saito determinant for Coxeter discriminant strata

Let $W$ be a finite Coxeter group and $V$ its reflection representation. The orbit space $\mathcal{M}_W= V/W$ has the remarkable Saito flat metric defined as a Lie derivative of the $W$-invariant bilinear form $g$. We find determinant of the Saito metric restricted to an arbitrary Coxeter discriminant stratum in $\mathcal{M}_W$. It is shown that this determinant is proportional to a product of linear factors in the flat coordinates of the form $g$ on the stratum. We also find multiplicities of these factors in terms of Coxeter geometry of the stratum. This result may be interpreted as a generalisation to discriminant strata of the Coxeter factorisation formula for the Jacobian of the group $W$. As another interpretation, we find determinant of the operator of multiplication by the Euler vector field in the natural Frobenius structure on the strata.
