Controlling artificial surface heating in neutron star simulations: Application to hybrid equations of state

The treatment of the stellar surface in binary neutron star simulations is crucial for the accuracy of the numerical evolution and the physical reliability of the predicted observables. Numerical artifacts associated with the treatment of steep gradients near the stellar surface can produce spurious heating during the inspiral, leading to an artificial increase of the internal energy and an unphysical expansion of the neutron star. In this work, we investigate the effectiveness of the entropy-based flux-limiting (EFL) scheme in mitigating these numerical effects within the finite-difference code BAM. We perform simulations of both isolated neutron stars and binary neutron star inspirals employing a representative set of hybrid equations of state. We show that the EFL scheme significantly reduces artificial surface heating. This reduction is observed consistently across all stellar models and binary configurations considered, demonstrating that the reduction of numerical heating is a robust feature of the EFL method.

EuroHPC SPACE CoE: Redesigning Scalable Parallel Astrophysical Codes for Exascale

High Performance Computing (HPC) based simulations are crucial in Astrophysics and Cosmology (A&C), helping scientists investigate and understand complex astrophysical phenomena. Taking advantage of exascale computing capabilities is essential for these efforts. However, the unprecedented architectural complexity of exascale systems impacts legacy codes. The SPACE Centre of Excellence (CoE) aims to re-engineer key astrophysical codes to tackle new computational challenges by adopting innovative programming paradigms and software (SW) solutions. SPACE brings together scientists, code developers, HPC experts, hardware (HW) manufacturers, and SW developers. This collaboration enhances exascale A&C applications, promoting the use of exascale and post-exascale computing capabilities. Additionally, SPACE addresses high-performance data analysis for the massive data outputs from exascale simulations and modern observations, using machine learning (ML) and visualisation tools. The project facilitates application deployment across platforms by focusing on code repositories and data sharing, integrating European astrophysical communities around exascale computing with standardised SW and data protocols.

Eccentricity reduction of binary neutron star initial data with the entropy based flux limiting scheme

The construction of high-resolution shock-capturing schemes is vital in producing highly accurate gravitational waveforms from neutron star binaries. The entropy based flux limiting (EFL) scheme is able to perform fast converging binary neutron star merger simulations reaching up to fourth-order convergence in the gravitational waveform phase. In these results the EFL method was used only in the dynamical evolution of initial data constructed with the Lorene library. Here, we extend the use of the EFL method to the construction of eccentricity reduced initial data for neutron star binaries and present several new BNS simulations resulting from such initial data and show for the first time up to optimal fifth-order convergence in the gravitational waveform phase.

Entropy based flux limiting scheme for conservation laws

The entropy based flux-limiting (EFL) scheme is a novel approach designed to accurately resolve shocks and discontinuities in special and general relativistic hydrodynamics. By adaptively adjusting the numerical fluxes, the EFL method mitigates oscillations and preserves smooth transition across discontinuities in shock-dominated flows. Here, we extend the applicability of the EFL method beyond special/general relativistic hydrodynamics to scalar conservation laws and show how to treat systems without a thermodynamic entropy. This is an indication that the method has universal applicability to any system of partial differential equations that can be written in conservation form. We also present some further very challenging special/general relativistic hydrodynamics applications of the EFL method.

Analytically improved and numerical-relativity informed effective-one-body model for coalescing binary neutron stars

Gravitational wave astronomy pipelines rely on template waveform models for searches and parameter estimation purposes. For coalescing binary neutron stars (BNS), such models need to accurately reproduce numerical relativity (NR) up to merger, in order to provide robust estimate of the stars' equation of state - dependent parameters. In this work we present an improved version of the Effective One Body (EOB) model $\tt TEOBResumS$ for gravitational waves from BNS systems. Building upon recent post-Newtonian calculations, we include subleading order tidal terms in the waveform multipoles and EOB metric potentials, as well as add up to 5.5PN terms in the gyro-gravitomagnetic functions entering the spin-orbit sector of the model. In order to further improve the EOB-NR agreement in the last few orbital cycles before merger, we introduce next-to-quasicircular corrections in the waveform -- informed by a large number of BNS NR simulations -- and introduce a new NR-informed parameter entering the tidal sector of our conservative dynamics. The performance of our model is then validated against 14 new eccentricity reduced simulations of unequal mass, spinning binaries with varying equation of state. A time-domain phasing analysis and mismatch computations demonstrate that the new model overall improves over the previous version of $\tt TEOBResumS$. Finally, we present a closed-form frequency domain representation of the (tidal) amplitude and phase of the new model. This representation accounts for mass-ratio, aligned spin and (resummed) spin-quadrupole effects in the tidal phase and -- within the calibration region -- it is faithful to the original model.

Second release of the CoRe database of binary neutron star merger waveforms

We present the second data release of gravitational waveforms from binary neutron star merger simulations performed by the Computational Relativity (CoRe) collaboration. The current database consists of 254 different binary neutron star configurations and a total of 590 individual numerical-relativity simulations using various grid resolutions. The released waveform data contain the strain and the Weyl curvature multipoles up to $\ell=m=4$. They span a significant portion of the mass, mass-ratio,spin and eccentricity parameter space and include targeted configurations to the events GW170817 and GW190425. CoRe simulations are performed with 18 different equations of state, seven of which are finite temperature models, and three of which account for non-hadronic degrees of freedom. About half of the released data are computed with high-order hydrodynamics schemes for tens of orbits to merger; the other half is computed with advanced microphysics. We showcase a standard waveform error analysis and discuss the accuracy of the database in terms of faithfulness. We present ready-to-use fitting formulas for equation of state-insensitive relations at merger (e.g. merger frequency), luminosity peak, and post-merger spectrum.

Entropy-limited higher-order central scheme for neutron star merger simulations

Numerical relativity simulations are the only way to calculate exact gravitational waveforms from binary neutron star mergers and to design templates for gravitational-wave astronomy. The accuracy of these numerical calculations is critical in quantifying tidal effects near merger that are currently one of the main sources of uncertainty in merger waveforms. In this work, we explore the use of an entropy-based flux-limiting scheme for high-order, convergent simulations of neutron star spacetimes. The scheme effectively tracks the stellar surface and physical shocks using the residual of the entropy equation thus allowing the use of unlimited central flux schemes in regions of smooth flow. We perform the first neutron star merger simulations with such a method and demonstrate up to fourth-order convergence in the gravitational waveform phase. The scheme reduces the phase error up to a factor five when compared to state-of-the-art high-order characteristic schemes and can be employed for producing faithful tidal waveforms for gravitational-wave modelling.

COFFEE -- An MPI-parallelized Python package for the numerical evolution of differential equations

COFFEE (ConFormal Field Equation Evolver) is a Python package primarily developed to numerically evolve systems of partial differential equations over time using the method of lines. It includes a variety of time integrators and finite differencing stencils with the summation-by-parts property, as well as pseudo-spectral functionality for angular derivatives of spin-weighted functions. Some additional capabilities include being MPI-parallelisable on a variety of different geometries, HDF data output and post processing scripts to visualize data, and an actions class that allows users to create code for analysis after each timestep.

Construction of high precision numerical single and binary black hole initial data

We present a novel implicit numerical implementation of the parabolic-hyperbolic formulation of the constraints of general relativity. The proposed method is unconditionally stable, has the advantage of not requiring the imposition of any boundary conditions in the strong field regime, and offers a holistic (all inclusive) approach to the construction of single and binary black hole initial data. The new implicit solver is extensively tested against known exact black hole solutions and is used to construct initial data for several single and binary black hole configurations.

Numerical construction of initial data for Einstein's equations with static extension to space-like infinity

We describe a numerical method to construct Cauchy data extending to space-like infinity based on Corvino's (2000) gluing method. Adopting the setting of Giulini and Holzegel (2005), we restrict ourselves here to vacuum axisymmetric spacetimes and glue a Schwarzschildean end to Brill-Lindquist data describing two non-rotating black holes. Our numerical implementation is based on pseudo-spectral methods, and we carry out extensive convergence tests to check the validity of our numerical results. We also investigate the dependence of the total ADM mass on the details of the gluing construction.

Global simulations of Minkowski space-time including space-like infinity

In this work, we study linearised gravitational fields on the entire Minkowski space-time including space-like infinity. The generalised conformal field equations linearised about a Minkowski background are utilised for this purpose. In principle, this conformal representation of Einstein's equations can be used to carry out global simulations of Minkowski space-time. We investigate thoroughly this possibility.

Numerical Brill-Lindquist initial data with a Schwarzschildean end at spatial infinity

We construct numerically time-symmetric initial data that are Schwarzschildean at spatial infinity and Brill-Lindquist in the interior. The transition between these two data sets takes place along a finite gluing region equipped with an axisymmetric Brill wave metric. The construction is based on an application of Corvino's gluing method using Brill waves due to Giulini and Holzegel. Here, we use a gluing function that includes a simple angular dependence. We also investigate the dependence of the ADM mass of our construction on the details of the gluing procedure.

The Spin-2 Equation on Minkowski Background

The linearised general conformal field equations in their first and second order form are used to study the behaviour of the spin-2 zero-rest-mass equation on Minkowski background in the vicinity of space-like infinity.

The second order spin-2 system in flat space near space-like and null-infinity

In previous work, the numerical solution of the linearized gravitational field equations near space-like and null-infinity was discussed in the form of the spin-2 zero-rest-mass equation for the perturbations of the conformal Weyl curvature. The motivation was to study the behavior of the field and properties of the numerical evolution of the system near infinity using Friedrich's conformal representation of space-like infinity as a cylinder. It has been pointed out by H.O. Kreiss and others that the numerical evolution of a system using second order wave equations has several advantages compared to a system of first order equations. Therefore, in the present paper we derive a system of second order wave equations and prove that the solution spaces of the two systems are the same if appropriate initial and boundary data are given. We study the properties of this system of coupled wave equations in the same geometric setting and discuss the differences between the two approaches.

Linearized gravitational waves near space-like and null infinity

Linear perturbations on Minkowski space are used to probe numerically the remote region of an asymptotically flat space-time close to spatial infinity. The study is undertaken within the framework of Friedrich's conformal field equations and the corresponding conformal representation of spatial infinity as a cylinder. The system under consideration is the (linear) zero-rest-mass equation for a spin-2 field. The spherical symmetry of the underlying background is used to decompose the field into separate non-interacting multipoles. It is demonstrated that it is possible to reach null-infinity from initial data on an asymptotically Euclidean hyper-surface and that the physically important radiation field can be extracted accurately on $\scri^+$.

Numerical space-times near space-like and null infinity. The spin-2 system on Minkowski space

In this paper we demonstrate for the first time that it is possible to solve numerically the Cauchy problem for the linearisation of the general conformal field equations near spacelike infinity, which is only well-defined in Friedrich's cylinder picture. We have restricted ourselves here to the "core" of the equations - the spin-2 system - propagating on Minkowski space. We compute the numerical solutions for various classes of initial data, do convergence tests and also compare to exact solutions. We also choose initial data which intentionally violate the smoothness conditions and then check the analytical predictions about singularities. This paper is the first step in a long-term investigation of the use of conformal methods in numerical relativity.
