On a family of singular potentials: Parameter dependence of thermodynamic characteristics

We consider the family of singular potentials $\psi_c = 2 \log(|\sin(\pi(x-c))|)$, $c\in \mathbb{T}$ over the doubling map and we examine the dependence of several thermodynamic and multifractal characteristics on the position of the singularity $c$. This includes the pressure functions $\mathcal P(t \psi_c)$, the Birkhoff spectrum of $\psi_c$, and the $L^q$ spectrum of the associated equilibrium measure $\mu_c$. For every $c \in \mathbb{T}$, it is known that $\mu_c$ is given by the diffraction measure of a generalized Thue--Morse sequence, with the classical Thue--Morse measure arising for $c = 0$. If $t\geqslant 0$, we show that $c \mapsto \mathcal{P}(t\psi_c)$ is continuous in $c$. If $t<0$, we prove that the function $c \mapsto \mathcal{P}(t\psi_c)$ is lower semicontinuous but not continuous. In this case, we show that the continuity points are precisely those values $c$ such that $\mathcal{P}(t\psi_c) = \infty$, which form a residual set of vanishing Hausdorff dimension in $\mathbb{T}$. We obtain similar statements about the parameter (semi-)continuity of the $L^q$ spectrum and the Birkhoff spectrum.

On uniform recurrence for hyperbolic automorphisms of the $2$-dimensional torus

We are interested in studying sets of the form \[ \mathcal{U}(\alpha) := \left\{ x\in X: \ \exists M=M(x) \geq 1 \text{ such that } \forall N\geq M, \ \exists n\leq N \text{ such that } d(T^nx, x) \leq |\lambda|^{-\alpha N} \right\} \] where $(X,T,d)$ is our metric dynamical system and $|\lambda|>1$. Although a lot of results exist for the one dimensional case, not as many are known for systems in higher dimensions and especially in the hyperbolic case. We consider $X=\mathbb{T}^2$, $T(x) = Ax \pmod{1}$, where $A$ is a hyperbolic, area preserving, $2\times 2$ matrix with integer entries and $\lambda$ is the eigenvalue of $A$ of modulus larger than $1$ and we explicitly calculate the Hausdorff dimension of this set.

Fast dimension spectrum for a potential with a logarithmic singularity

We regard the classic Thue--Morse diffraction measure as an equilibrium measure for a potential function with a logarithmic singularity over the doubling map. Our focus is on unusually fast scaling of the Birkhoff sums (superlinear) and of the local measure decay (superpolynomial). For several scaling functions, we show that points with this behavior are abundant in the sense of full Hausdorff dimension. At the fastest possible scaling, the corresponding rates reveal several remarkable phenomena. There is a gap between level sets for dyadic rationals and non-dyadic points, and beyond dyadic rationals, non-zero accumulation points occur only within intervals of positive length. The dependence between the smallest and the largest accumulation point also manifests itself in a non-trivial joint dimension spectrum.

Joint invariant sets for non-commutative expanding Markov maps of the circle

A long-standing question is what invariant sets can be shared by two maps acting on the same space. A similar question stands for invariant measures. A particular interesting case are expanding Markov maps of the circle. If the two involved maps are commuting the answer is almost complete. However very little is known in the non-commutative case. A first step is to analyze the structure of the invariant sets of a single map. For a mapping of the circle of class $C^{\alpha}$, $\alpha>1$, we study the topological structure of the set containing all compact invariant sets. Furthermore for a fixed such mapping we examine locally, in the category sense, how big is the subset of all maps that have at least one non trivial joint invariant compact set. Lastly we show the strong dimensional relation of the maximal invariant set of a given Markov map contained in a subinterval of $[0,1)$ and the set of all right endpoints of its invariants sets contained in the same subinterval as well as the continuity dependence of the dimension on the endpoints of the subinterval.
