Pion transverse charge density and the edge of hadrons

We use the world data on the pion form factor for space-like kinematics and a technique previously used to extract the proton transverse densities to extract the transverse pion charge density and its uncertainty due the incomplete knowledge of the pion form factor at large values of Q2 and the experimental uncertainties. The pion charge density at small values of impact parameter b<0.1 fm is dominated by this incompleteness error while the range between 0.1-0.3 fm is relatively well constrained. A comparison of pion and proton transverse charge densities shows that the pion is denser than the proton for values of b<0.2 fm. The pion and proton transverse charge densities seem to be the same for values of b=0.3-0.6 fm. Future data from Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) 12 GeV and the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) will increase the dynamic extent of the form factor data to higher values of Q2 and thus reduce the uncertainties in the extracted pion transverse charge density.

Corrections to Eikonal Approximation for Nuclear Scattering at Medium Energies

The upcoming Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) at Michigan State University has reemphasized the importance of accurate modeling of low energy nucleus-nucleus scattering. Such calculations have been simplified by using the eikonal approximation. As a high energy approximation, however, its accuracy suffers for the medium energy beams that are of current experimental interest. A prescription developed by Wallace \cite{Wallace:1971zz,Wallace:1973iu} that obtains the scattering propagator as an expansion around the eikonal propagator (Glauber approach) has the potential to extend the range of validity of the approximation to lower energies. Here we examine the properties of this expansion, and calculate the first-, second-, and third-order corrections for the scattering of a spinless particle off of a ${}^{40}$Ca nucleus, and for nuclear breakup reactions involving ${}^{11}$Be. We find that, including these corrections extends the lower bound of the range of validity of the down to energies of 40 MeV. At that energy the corrections provide as much as a 15\% correction to certain processes.

Pionic and Hidden-Color, Six-Quark Contributions to the Deuteron b1 Structure Function

The b1 structure function is an observable feature of a spin-1 system sensitive to non-nucleonic components of the target nuclear wave function. The contributions of exchanged pions in the deuteron are estimated and found to be of measurable size for small values of x. A simple model for a hidden-color, six-quark configurations (with~ 0.15% probability to exist in the deuteron) is proposed and found to give substantial contributions for values of x>0.2. Good agreement with Hermes data is obtained. Predictions are made for an upcoming JLab experiment. The Close & Kumano sum rule is investigated and found to be a useful guide to understanding various possible effects that may contribute.

Charge-symmetry breaking forces and isospin mixing in 8Be

We report Green's function Monte Carlo calculations of isospin-mixing (IM) matrix elements for the 2+, 1+, and 3+ T=0,1 pairs of states at 16--19 MeV excitation in 8Be. The realistic Argonne v18 (AV18) two-nucleon and Illinois-7 three-nucleon potentials are used to generate the nuclear wave functions. Contributions from the full electromagnetic interaction and strong class III charge-symmetry-breaking (CSB) components of the AV18 potential are evaluated. We also examine two theoretically more complete CSB potentials based on rho-omega mixing, tuned to give the same neutron-neutron scattering length as AV18. The contribution of these different CSB potentials to the 3H-3He, 7Li-7Be, and 8Li-8B isovector energy differences is evaluated and reasonable agreement with experiment is obtained. Finally, for the 8Be IM calculation we add the small class IV CSB terms coming from one-photon, one-pion, and one-rho exchange, as well as rho-omega mixing. The expectation values of the three CSB models vary by up to 20% in the isovector energy differences, but only by 10% or less in the IM matrix element. The total matrix element gives 85--90% of the experimental IM value of -145 keV for the 2+ doublet, with about two thirds coming from the Coulomb interaction. We also report the IM matrix element to the first 2+ state at 3 MeV excitation, which is the final state for various tests of the Standard Model for beta-decay.

Charge Symmetry Breaking and Parity Violating Electron Scattering

I review the effects of charge symmetry breaking CSB on electromagnetic form factors and how that influences extraction of information regarding nucleon strangeness content and the weak mixing angle. It seems that CSB effects are very modest and should not impact the analysis of experiments.

Muonic hydrogen and the proton radius puzzle

The extremely precise extraction of the proton radius by Pohl et al. from the measured energy difference between the 2P and 2S states of muonic hydrogen disagrees significantly with that extracted from electronic hydrogen or elastic electron-proton scattering. This is the proton radius puzzle. The origins of the puzzle and the reasons for believing it to be very significant are explained. Various possible solutions of the puzzle are identified, and future work needed to resolve the puzzle is discussed.

Alberg and Miller Reply to arXiv:arXiv:1206.3671

In a recent Comment [arXiv:1206.3671] on our calculation of the pion contributions to the self-energy of the nucleon [arXiv:1201.4184], Ji, Melnitchouk and Thomas (JMT) correctly state that we obtain the same result as given by the pseudovector (PV) theory. We point out that this result is expected by the equivalence theorem, since our pion-nucleon effective theory puts the intermediate nucleon on its mass shell. We make no claim that pseudoscalar (PS) and pseudovector interactions are equivalent in general. JMT also argue that our theory will not give the correct PV result for the pion momentum distribution $f^N_π$. We note that the discrepancies are much smaller than the uncertainties due to $πN$ form factors. To summarize, nothing in the Comment by JMT changes the conclusions or numerical results of our work in any substantive way.

Incoherent $J/ψ$ electroproduction from the deuteron at JLab energies and the elastic $J/ψ$-nucleon scattering amplitude

Calculations are presented for incoherent $J/ψ$ electroproduction from the deuteron at JLab energies, including the effects of $J/ψ$-nucleon rescattering in the final state, in order to determine the feasibility of measuring the $J/ψ$-nucleon scattering length, or the $J/ψ$-nucleon scattering amplitude at lower relative energies than in previous measurements. It is shown that for a scattering length of the size predicted by existing theoretical calculations, it would not be possible to determine the scattering length. However, it may be possible to determine the scattering amplitude at significantly lower relative energies than the only previous measurements.

Color transparency in the reaction nuclear rho production by virtual photons

We study the nuclear transparency $T$ for the exclusive reaction $γ^*+A\toρ+p+(A-1)^*$ at incident virtual photon energies $ν\ge$ 10 GeV %where the final state of the $A-1$-nucleon system is a one-hole state of the initial nucleus, to investigate the separate dependence on the photon virtuality, $Q^2$ and the 4-momentum-transfer-squared to the knocked-out proton, $t$. If the effects of color transparency are included, $T$ shows significant variation with $t$ even for small values of $Q^2$ for fixed values of the coherence length $l_c$, and also shows significant increase as $Q^2$ is increased at fixed $l_c$ and $t$. The value of $T$ is found to depend strongly on the phase space over which it is measured.

Cottingham formula for the electromagnetic self-energy contribution to M_p - M_n

We provide an update of the determination of the electromagnetic self-energy contribution to M_p - M_n based upon Cottingham's Formula. A technical oversight in the literature is uncovered: the application of the Cottingham Formula requires the use of a subtracted dispersion integral; an argument to evade the subtraction function was presented; the argument was based on false assumptions about the scaling violations of the parton model, a point first mentioned by J. C. Collins. We elucidate this point and utilize low-energy effective theory to relate the unknown subtraction function to the nucleon isovector magnetic polarizability. This allows us to provide the first reliable determination of dM = 1.30(03)(47) MeV [1].

Proton Polarizability Contribution: Muonic Hydrogen Lamb Shift and Elastic Scattering

The uncertainty in the contribution to the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen, $ΔE^{subt}$ arising from proton polarizability effects in the two-photon exchange diagram at large virtual photon momenta is shown large enough to account for the proton radius puzzle. This is because $ΔE^{subt}$ is determined by an integrand that falls very slowly with very large virtual photon momenta. We evaluate the necessary integral using a set of chosen form factors and also a dimensional regularization procedure which makes explicit the need for a low energy constant. The consequences of our two-photon exchange interaction for low-energy elastic lepton-proton scattering are evaluated and could be observable in a planned low energy lepton-proton scattering experiment planned to run at PSI.

Nuclear Quasi-Elastic Electron Scattering Limits Nucleon Off-Mass Shell Properties

The use of quasi-elastic electron nucleus scattering is shown to provide significant constraints on models of the proton electromagnetic form factor of off-shell nucleons. Such models can be constructed to be consistent with constraints from current conservation and low-energy theorems, while also providing a contribution to the Lamb shift that might potentially resolve the proton radius puzzle in muonic hydrogen. However, observations of quasi-elastic scattering limit the overall strength of the off-shell form factors to values that correspond to small contributions to the Lamb shift.

Color Transparency

Color transparency is the vanishing of nuclear initial or final state interactions involving specific reactions. The reasons for believing that color transparency might be a natural consequence of QCD are reviewed. The main impetus for this talk is recent experimental progress, and this is reviewed briefly.

The Electromagnetic Self-Energy Contribution to M_p - M_n and the Isovector Nucleon Magnetic Polarizability

We update the determination of the isovector nucleon electromagnetic self-energy, valid to leading order in QED. A technical oversight in the literature concerning the elastic contribution to Cottingham's formula is corrected and modern knowledge of the structure functions is used to precisely determine the inelastic contribution. We find δM_{p-n}^γ= 1.30(03)(47) MeV. The largest uncertainty arises from a subtraction term required in the dispersive analysis, which can be related to the isovector magnetic polarizability. With plausible model assumptions, we can combine our calculation with additional input from lattice QCD to constrain this polarizability as: β_{p-n} = -0.87(85) x 10^{-4} fm^3.

Nucleon form factors and spin content in a quark-diquark model with a pion cloud

We propose a new model of the nucleon in which quark-diquark configurations immersed in a pion cloud are treated in a manner consistent with Poincaré invariance. With suitably chosen parameters, the computations employing this model reproduce the measured electromagnetic form factors and the quark-spin contribution to the total nucleon angular momentum.

Taming the Pion Cloud of the Nucleon

We present a light-front determination of the pionic contribution to the nucleon self-energy, $Σ_π$, to second-order in pion-baryon coupling constants that allows the pion-nucleon vertex function to be treated in a model-independent manner constrained by experiment. The pion mass $μ$ dependence of $Σ_π$ is consistent with chiral perturbation theory results for small values of $μ$ and is also linearly dependent on $μ$ for larger values, in accord with the results of lattice QCD calculations. The derivative of $Σ_π$ with respect to $μ^2$ yields the dominant contribution to the pion content, which is consistent with the $\bar{d}-\bar{u}$ difference observed experimentally in the violation of the Gottfried sum rule.

Comment on "Nuclear structure corrections in muonic deuterium"

A recent letter [1] investigated the effects of deuteron polarizability in the mu D atom. The importance of understanding this atom has been heightened because of the possible light it could shed on the proton radius puzzle. Here we confirm, clarify, and emphasize the significance of the result [1] that the effects of the third Zemach moment are canceled by part of the deuteron polarizability effects. 1. K.
