Detecting quantum gravitational effects of loop quantum cosmology in the early universe?

We derive the primordial power spectra and spectral indexes of the density fluctuations and gravitational waves in the framework of loop quantum cosmology (LQC) with holonomy and inverse-volume corrections, by using the uniform asymptotic approximation method to its third-order, at which the upper error bounds are $\lesssim 0.15\%$, and accurate enough for the current and forthcoming cosmological observations. Then, using the Planck, BAO and SN data we obtain the tightest constraints on quantum gravitational effects from LQC corrections, and find that such effects could be well within the detection of the current and forthcoming cosmological observations.

Effects of high-order operators in non-relativistic Lifshitz holography

In this paper, we study the effects of high-order operators on the non-relativistic Lifshitz holography in the framework of the Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) theory of gravity, which naturally contains high-order operators in order for the theory to be power-counting renormalizble, and provides an ideal place for such studies. In particular, we show that the Lifshitz space-time is still a solution of the full theory of the HL gravity. The effects of the high-oder operators on the space-time itself is simply to shift the Lifshitz dynamical exponent. However, while in the infrared the asymptotic behavior of a (probe) scalar field near the boundary is similar to that studied in the literature, it gets dramatically modified in the UV limit, because of the presence of the high-order operators in this regime. Then, according to the gauge/gravity duality, this in turn affects the two-point correlation functions.

Power spectra and spectral indices of $k$-inflation: high-order corrections

$k$-inflation represents the most general single-field inflation, in which the perturbations usually obey an equation of motion with a time-dependent sound speed. In this paper, we study the observational predictions of the $k$-inflation by using the high-order uniform asymptotic approximation method. We calculate explicitly the slow-roll expressions of the power spectra, spectral indices, and running of the spectral indices for both the scalar and tensor perturbations. These expressions are all written in terms of the Hubble and sound speed flow parameters. It is shown that the previous results obtained by using the first-order uniform asymptotic approximation have been significantly improved by the high-order corrections of the uniform asymptotic approximations. Furthermore, we also check our results by comparing them with the ones obtained by other approximation methods, including the Green's function method, WKB approximation, and improved WKB approximation, and find the relative errors.

Gravitational quantum effects on power spectra and spectral indices with higher-order corrections

The uniform asymptotic approximation method provides a powerful, systematically-improved, and error-controlled approach to construct accurate analytical approximate solutions of mode functions of perturbations of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe, designed especially for the cases where the relativistic linear dispersion relation is modified after gravitational quantum effects are taken into account. These include models from string/M-Theory, loop quantum cosmology and Hořava-Lifshitz quantum gravity. In this paper, we extend our previous studies of the first-order approximations to high orders for the cases where the modified dispersion relation (linear or nonlinear) has only one-turning point (or zero). We obtain the general expressions for the power spectra and spectral indices of both scalar and tensor perturbations up to the third-order, at which the error bounds are $\lesssim 0.15\%$. As an application of these formulas, we calculate the power spectra and spectral indices in the slow-roll inflation with a nonlinear power-law dispersion relation. To check the consistency of our formulas, we further restrict ourselves to the relativistic case, and calculate the corresponding power spectra, spectral indices and runnings to the second-order. Then, we compare our results with the ones obtained by the Green function method, and show explicitly that the results obtained by these two different methods are consistent within the allowed errors.

The Inability of the White-Juday Warp Field Interferometer to Spectrally Resolve Spacetime Distortions

This paper contends that the spacetime distortions resulting from the experimentally obtainable electric field of a parallel plate capacitor configuration cannot be detected by the White-Juday Warp Field Interferometer [1]. Any post-processing results indicating a vanishing, non-zero difference between the charged and uncharged states of the capacitor are due to local effects rather than spacetime perturbations.

Inflationary cosmology with nonlinear dispersion relations

We present a technique, {\em the uniform asymptotic approximation}, to construct accurate analytical solutions of the linear perturbations of inflation after quantum effects of the early universe are taken into account, for which the dispersion relations generically become nonlinear. We construct explicitly the error bounds associated with the approximations and then study them in detail. With the understanding of the errors and the proper choice of the Liouville transformations of the differential equations of the perturbations, we show that the analytical solutions describe the exact evolution of the linear perturbations extremely well even only in the first-order approximations. As an application of the approximate analytical solutions, we calculate the power spectra and indices of scalar and tensor perturbations in the slow-roll inflation, and find that the amplitudes of the power spectra get modified due to the quantum effects, while the power spectrum indices remain the same as in the linear case.

Gauge Models in D Dimensions

Utilizing the Gauge Framework, software under development at Baylor University, we explicitly construct all layer 1 weakly coupled free fermionic heterotic string (WCFFHS) gauge models up to order 32 in four to ten large spacetime dimensions. These gauge models are well suited to large scale systematic surveys and, while they offer little phenomenologically, are useful for understanding the structure of the WCFFHS region of the string landscape. Herein we present the gauge groups statistics for this swath of the landscape for both supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric models.

Initial Systematic Investigations of the Landscape of Low Layer NAHE Variation Extensions

The discovery that the number of physically consistent string vacua is on the order of 10^500 has prompted several statistical studies of string phenomenology. Contained here is one such study that focuses on the Weakly Coupled Free Fermionic String (WCFFHS) formalism. Presented here are systematic extensions of a variation on the NAHE (Nanopoulos, Antoniadis, Hagelin, Ellis) set of basis vectors. This variation is more conducive to the production of "mirrored" models, in which the observable and hidden sector particles are identical. This study is a parallel to the extensions of the NAHE set itself (referenced herein), and presents statistics related to similar model properties. Statistical coupling between specific gauge groups and ST SUSYs is also examined. Finally, a model with completely mirrored gauge groups is discussed.

Initial Systematic Investigations of the Landscape of Low Layer NAHE Extensions

The discovery that the number of physically consistent string vacua is on the order of 10^500 has prompted several statistical studies of string phenomenology. Contained here is one such study that focuses on the Weakly Coupled Free Fermionic Heterotic String (WCFFHS) formalism. Presented are systematic extensions of the well-known NAHE (Nanopoulos, Antoniadis, Hagelin, Ellis) set of basis vectors, which have been shown to produce phenomenologically realistic models. Statistics related to the number of U(1)'s, gauge group factors, non-Abelian singlets, ST SUSYs, as well as the gauge groups themselve are discussed for the full range of models produced as well as models containing GUT groups only. Prior results of other large-scale investigations are compared with these regarding the aforementioned quantities. Statistical coupling between the gauge groups and the number of ST SUSYs is also discussed, and it was found that for order-3 extensions there are more models with enhanced ST SUSY when there is an exceptional group present. Also discussed are some three-generation GUT models found in the data sets. These models are unique because they come from basis vectors which still have a geometric interpretation -- there are no "rank-cuts" in these models.

Algorithm for determining U(1) charges in free fermionic heterotic string models

To assist in the search for phenomenologically realistic models in the string landscape, we must develop tools for investigating all gauge charges, including U(1) charges, in string models. We introduce the process for constructing fermionic string models and present an algorithm for determining the U(1) gauge states and U(1) charges in weakly-coupled free fermionic heterotic string (WCFFHS) models given their matter and non-Abelian gauge content. We determine the computational complexity of this algorithm and discuss a particular implementation that can be used in conjunction with a framework developed at Baylor University for building WCFFHS models. We also present preliminary results regarding matter state uniqueness for a run of 1.4 million gauge models and find that U(1) charges affect the number of unique matter states in a significant minority of models constructed. We conclude by considering future avenues of investigation to which this algorithm may be applied.

Redundancies in Explicitly Constructed Ten Dimensional Heterotic String Models

Using Baylor University's C++ software for construction of weakly coupled free fermionic heterotic string models, called the FF Framework, we explicitly construct the level 1 Kač-Moody ten dimensional heterotic string models with the aim of understanding the redundancies endemic to this construction method. We show that for models in any even number of large space-time dimensions with a massless left mover and an odd ordered right mover, the maximal number of space-time supersymmetries are present. We show that in order to produce all of the models for a given order, different basis vectors must be built; one cannot vary only the GSO coefficients. We also show that all combinations of two order-2 basis vectors do not produce the same models as all possible single order-4 basis vectors, implying the product of the orders used in a search does not necessarily determine the models built. We also show that to build all of the D=10 level-1 models the inputs must be: sets of single order-6 basis vectors, pairs of basis vectors with orders 3 and 2, or sets of three order-2 basis vectors.

Note on a NAHE Variation

We present a variation of the NAHE-basis for free fermionic heterotic string models. By rotating some of the boundary conditions of the NAHE periodic/anti-periodic fermions {y^m, \bar{y}^m, w^m, \bar{w}^m,}, for m = 1 to 6, associated with the six compact dimensions of a bosonic lattice/orbifold model, we show an additional method for enhancing the standard NAHE gauge group of SO(10) back to E6. This rotation transforms (SO(10) {\otimes} SO(6)^3)_obs {\otimes} (E_8)_hid into (E_6 {\otimes} U(1)^5)_obs {\otimes} SO(22)_hid. When SO(10) is enhanced to E_6 in this manner, the i^{th} MSSM matter generation in the SO(10) 16_i rep, originating in the twisted basis vector b_i, recombines with both its associated untwisted MSSM Higgs in a 10_i rep and an untwisted non-Abelian singlet ϕ_i, to form a 27_i rep of E_6. Beginning instead with the E6 model, the inverse transformation of the fermion boundary conditions corresponds to partial GUT breaking via boundary rotation. Correspondence between free fermionic models with Z_2 {\otimes} Z_2 twist (especially of the NAHE class) and orbifold models with a similar twist has received further attention recently. Our NAHE variation also involves a Z_2 {\otimes} Z_2 twist and offers additional understanding regarding the free fermion/orbifold correspondence. Further, models based on this NAHE variation offer some different phenomenological features compared to NAHE-based models. In particular, the more compact Z2 {\otimes} Z2 twist of the NAHE variation offers a range of mirror models not possible from NAHE-based models. Examples of such models are presented.

Orbifold Branes in the $M_D \times M_{d^+} \times M_{d^-}$ Compactification of type II string on $S^1/Z_2$ and their cosmological applications

In this paper, we study the implementation of brane worlds in type II string theory. Starting with the NS/NS sector of type II string, we first compactify the $(D+d_{+} + d_{-})$-dimensional spacetime, and reduce the corresponding action to a D-dimensional effective action, where the topologies of $M_{d_{+}}$ and $M_{d_{-}}$ are arbitrary. We further compactify one of the $(D-1)$ spatial dimensions on an $S^{1}/Z_{2}$ orbifold, and derive the gravitational and matter field equations both in the bulk and on the branes. Then, we investigate two key issues in such a setup: (i) the radion stability and radion mass; and (ii) the localization of gravity, and the corresponding Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes. We show explicitly that the radion is stable and its mass can be in the order of $GeV$. In addition, the gravity is localized on the visible brane, and its spectrum of the gravitational KK towers is discrete and can have a mass gap of $TeV$, too. The high order Yukawa corrections to the 4-dimensional Newtonian potential is exponentially suppressed, and can be negligible. Applying such a setup to cosmology, we obtain explicitly the field equations in the bulk and the generalized Friedmann equations on the branes.

Casimir Energy and Brane Stability

We investigate the role of Casimir energy as a mechanism for brane stability in five-dimensional models with the fifth dimension compactified on an S^1\Z_2 orbifold, which includes the Randall-Sundrum two brane model (RS1). We employ a zeta-function regularization technique utilizing the Schwinger proper time method and the Jacobi theta function identity to calculate the one-loop effective potential. We show that the combination of the Casimir energies of a scalar Higgs field, the three generations of Standard Model fermions and one additional massive non-SM scalar in the bulk produce a non-trivial minimum of the potential. In particular, we consider a scalar field with a coupling in the bulk to a Lorentz violating vector particle localized to the compactified dimension. Such a scalar may provide a natural means of the fine-tuning needed for stabilization of the brane spearation. Lastly, we briefly review the possibility that Casimir energy plays a role in generating the currently observed epoch of cosmological inflation by examining a simple five-dimensional anisotropic metric.

Putting the Warp into Warp Drive

Over the last decade, there has been a respectable level of scientific interest regarding the concept of a warp drive. This is a hypothetical propulsion device that could theoretically circumvent the traditional limitations of special relativity which restricts spacecraft to sub-light velocities. Any breakthrough in this field would revolutionize space exploration and open the doorway to interstellar travel. This article discusses a novel approach to generating the warp bubble necessary for such propulsion; the mathematical details of this theory are discussed in an article published in the Journal of the British Interpanetary Society. The theory is based on some of the exciting predictions coming out of string theory and it is the aim of this article to introduce the warp drive idea from a non-mathematical perspective that should be accessible to a wide range of readers.

Radius Destabilization in Five Dimensional Orbifolds Due to an Enhanced Casimir Effect

One of the challenges in connecting higher dimensional theories to cosmology is stabilization of the moduli fields. We investigate the role of a Lorentz violating vector field in the context of stabilization. Specifically, we compute the one loop Casimir energy in Randall-Sundrum 5-dimensional (non-supersymmetric) S^1/ Z_2 orbifolds resulting from the interaction of a real scalar field with periodic boundary conditions with a Lorentz violating vector field. We find that the result is an enhanced attractive Casimir force. Hence, for stability, positive contributions to the Casimir force from branes and additional fields would be required to counter the destabilizing, attractive effect of Lorentz violating fields.
