Multistage spin correlations in the $s$ = 1/2 stuffed hyper-star lattice Li$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(MoO$_{4}$)$_{3}$

Star lattice, which can be visualized as a honeycomb network with each vertex replaced by a triangle, provides a rare platform for realizing exotic quantum states such as quantum spin liquids and disorder-driven random-singlet (RS) states. Herein, we investigate the ground-state properties of the three-dimensional (3D) stuffed hyper-star lattice Li$_2$Cu$_2$(MoO$_4$)$_3$, which exhibits a crossover from short-range spin correlations to a disorder-driven RS-like state below $T^{*}\sim$15.8 K. Thermodynamic and microscopic measurements capture this crossover through a change in the power-law behavior of various observables, from $\sim T^{0.25}$ for $T > T^{*}$ to $\sim T^{-0.50}$ for $T < T^{*}$. Upon further cooling, a quasi-frozen state emerges near $T_{\rm f} = 0.32$ K, likely associated with weakly coupled spin chains within the hyper-star spin network. Our results underscore the crucial role of orphan spins and weak residual interactions in stabilizing a disorder-driven quantum-disordered state in 3D.

Direct confirmation of long-range magnetic order and evidence for multipoles in Ce$_{2}$O$_{3}$

The sesquioxide, Ce$_{2}$O$_{3}$, has been a material of intense interest in recent years due to reports of an anomalous giant magnetodielectric effect and emergent mixed crystal field-phonon (vibronic) excitations below a putative antiferromagnetic transition at T$_{N}$ = 6.2 K. The claim of long-range magnetic order in this material is based on heat capacity and temperature-dependent susceptibility measurements; however, multiple neutron diffraction studies have been unable to distinguish any magnetic Bragg peaks. In this article, we present the results of a comprehensive investigation of the low-temperature phase in symmetry-broken polycrystalline Ce$_{2}$O$_{3}$ using a combination of magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, neutron diffraction, triple-axis and time-of-flight (TOF) inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and muon spin rotation ($\mu$SR). Our measurements and subsequent analysis confirm that the transition at T$_{N}$ can be associated with the ordering of moments on the Ce$^{3+}$ site. Both a spontaneous magnetic order observed with $\mu$SR and a dispersive spin-wave spectrum observed with inelastic neutron scattering suggest a model wherein planar dipoles order antiferromagnetically. Notable inconsistencies between $\mu$SR and neutron scattering data within the dipole picture provide strong evidence for the ordering of higher-order moments.

Influence of the Magnetic Sub-Lattices in the Double Perovskite Compound LaCaNiReO$_6$

The magnetism of double perovskites is a complex phenomenon, determined from intra- or interatomic magnetic moment interactions, and strongly influenced by geometry. We take advantage of the complementary length and time scales of the muon spin rotation, relaxation and resonance ($\mu^+$SR) microscopic technique and bulk AC/DC magnetic susceptibility measurements to study the magnetic phases of the LaCaNiReO$_6$ double perovskite. As a result we are able to discern and report a newly found dynamic phase transition and the formation of magnetic domains below and above the known magnetic transition of this compound at T$_N$ = 103 K. $\mu^+$SR, serving as a local probe at crystallographic interstitial sites, reveals a transition from a metastable ferrimagnetic ordering below T = 103 K to a stable one below T = 30 K. The fast and slow collective dynamic state of this system are investigated. Between 103 K < T < 230 K, the following two magnetic environments appear, a dense spin region and a static-dilute spin region. The paramagnetic state is obtained only above T > 270 K. An evolution of the interaction between Ni and Re magnetic sublattices in this geometrically frustrated fcc perovskite structure, is revealed as a function of temperature and magnetic field, through the critical behaviour and thermal evolution of microscopic and macroscopic physical quantities.

Intertwined Magnetic Sub-Lattices in the Double Perovskite Compound LaSrNiReO6

We report a muon spin rotation ($\mu^{+}$SR) study of the magnetic properties of the double perovskite compound LaSrNiReO$_{6}$. Using the unique length and time scales of the $\mu^{+}$SR technique, we successfully clarify the magnetic ground state of LaSrNiReO$_{6}$, which was previously deemed as a spin glass state. Instead, our $\mu^{+}$SR results point towards a long-range dynamically ordered ground state below $T_{\rm C}= 23$ K, for which a static limit is foreseen at $T=0$. Furthermore, between 23 K$ 250$ K) state. Our results reveal how two separate, yet intertwined magnetic lattices interact within the unique double perovskite structure and the importance of using complementary experimental techniques to obtain a complete understanding of the microscopic magnetic properties of complex materials.
