The Algebro-Geometric Toda Hierarchy Initial Value Problem for Complex-Valued Initial Data

We discuss the algebro-geometric initial value problem for the Toda hierarchy with complex-valued initial data and prove unique solvability globally in time for a set of initial (Dirichlet divisor) data of full measure. To this effect we develop a new algorithm for constructing stationary complex-valued algebro-geometric solutions of the Toda hierarchy, which is of independent interest as it solves the inverse algebro-geometric spectral problem for generally non-self-adjoint Jacobi operators, starting from a suitably chosen set of initial divisors of full measure. Combined with an appropriate first-order system of differential equations with respect to time (a substitute for the well-known Dubrovin equations), this yields the construction of global algebro-geometric solutions of the time-dependent Toda hierarchy. The inherent non-self-adjointness of the underlying Lax (i.e., Jacobi) operator associated with complex-valued coefficients for the Toda hierarchy poses a variety of difficulties that, to the best of our knowledge, are successfully overcome here for the first time. Our approach is not confined to the Toda hierarchy but applies generally to 1+1-dimensional completely integrable (discrete and continuous) soliton equations.

Algebro-Geometric Constraints on Solitons with Respect to Quasi-Periodic Backgrounds

We investigate the algebraic conditions the scattering data of short-range perturbations of quasi-periodic finite-gap Jacobi operators have to satisfy. As our main result we provide the Poisson-Jensen-type formula for the transmission coefficient in terms of Abelian integrals on the underlying hyperelliptic Riemann surface and give an explicit condition for its single-valuedness. In addition, we establish trace formulas which relate the scattering data to the conserved quantities in this case.

Stability of Periodic Soliton Equations under Short Range Perturbations

We consider the stability of (quasi-)periodic solutions of soliton equations under short range perturbations and give a complete description of the long time asymptotics in this situation. We show that, apart from the phenomenon of the solitons travelling on the quasi-periodic background, the perturbed solution asymptotically approaches a modulated solution. We use the Toda lattice as a model but the same methods and ideas are applicable to all soliton equations in one space dimension. More precisely, let $g$ be the genus of the hyperelliptic Riemann surface associated with the unperturbed solution. We show that the $n/t$-pane contains $g+2$ areas where the perturbed solution is close to a quasi-periodic solution in the same isospectral torus. In between there are $g+1$ regions where the perturbed solution is asymptotically close to a modulated lattice which undergoes a continuous phase transition (in the Jacobian variety) and which interpolates between these isospectral solutions. In the special case of the free solution ($g=0$) the isospectral torus consists of just one point and we recover the classical result. Both the solutions in the isospectral torus and the phase transition are explicitly characterized in terms of Abelian integrals on the underlying hyperelliptic Riemann surface.

Scattering Theory for Jacobi Operators with Quasi-Periodic Background

We develop direct and inverse scattering theory for Jacobi operators which are short range perturbations of quasi-periodic finite-gap operators. We show existence of transformation operators, investigate their properties, derive the corresponding Gel'fand-Levitan-Marchenko equation, and find minimal scattering data which determine the perturbed operator uniquely.

On Classical Solutions of the Relativistic Vlasov-Klein-Gordon System

We consider a collisionless ensemble of classical particles coupled to a Klein-Gordon field. For the resulting nonlinear system of partial differential equations, the relativistic Vlasov-Klein-Gordon system, we prove local-in-time existence of classical solutions and a continuation criterion which says that a solution can blow up only if the particle momenta become large. We also show that classical solutions are global in time in the one-dimensional case.

Global Weak Solutions of the Relativistic Vlasov-Klein-Gordon System

We consider an ensemble of classical particles coupled to a Klein-Gordon field. For the resulting nonlinear system of partial differential equations, which we call the relativistic Vlasov-Klein-Gordon system, we prove the existence of global weak solutions for initial data satisfying a size restriction. The latter becomes necessary since the energy of the system is indefinite, and only for restricted data a-priori bounds on the solutions can be derived from conservation of energy.
