Weak-Strong Resurgence Duality

We show that there is an explicit resurgent duality between weak and strong coupling expansions when one of the expansions has zero radius of convergence and the other has infinite radius of convergence. This complements the situation where the convergent expansion has finite radius of convergence, or when both expansions have zero radius of convergence. We illustrate this phenomenon for the Airy and Pearcey catastrophe integrals, and we apply it to two physical examples: the weak and strong coupling expansions of Dyson-Schwinger equations in zero-dimensional scalar $ϕ^4$ theories, and the short and long time expansions of the heat kernel trace for the fluctuation operator of the kink-antikink crystal saddle configuration in the Gross-Neveu model.

Pade Approximants for Geodesy

In this note we analyze the use of Padé approximants for downward continuation beyond the radius of convergence of spherical harmonic expansions (SHEs), and for identifying the complex singularities of the gravitational potential. SHEs are, in essence, expansions in 1/r, i.e., expansions about the point at infinity. Their domain of convergence is generically the exterior of the Brillouin sphere. However, for synthetic models with analytic topography and density the region of convergence may be larger, with the deviation decreasing as the structural complexity of the planet increases.

On Uniqueness of Mock Theta Functions

We develop a resurgent approach to the problem of unique continuation of mock theta functions across their natural boundary. The starting point is the representation of the associated Mordell-Appell integrals as Laplace transforms of resurgent functions, which serve as the primary analytic objects. By rotating the Laplace contour by $π$, i.e. onto the Stokes line, one obtains, in all known cases, the mock-modular relations between the Mordell-Appell integrals and the corresponding unary series in $\hat q=e^{-πi τ}$ and $\hat q_1=e^{-πi (-1/τ)}$. We then prove that these relations admit a unique solution on the $q$-side, expressed in terms of $q=e^{πi τ}$ and $q_1=e^{πi (-1/τ)}$, with coefficients determined by the corresponding Mordell-Appell integrals. This yields a canonical continuation across the natural boundary, given by a resurgent extension of the classical principle of permanence of relations, and singles out a distinguished family of mock theta functions in each group. We present a complete analysis for the order 3 and 5 cases (mf3 and mf5). The method extends naturally to higher orders; a general theory will appear in a separate paper.

The Chern-Simons Natural Boundary and Black Hole Entropy

The method of resurgent continuation of transseries reveals a new correspondence between the $q$-series for enumerating degeneracies of quarter-BPS states in supersymmetric black holes and $\hat{Z}$ invariants of Chern-Simons theory on a class of 3 dimensional orientation-reversed manifolds.

Non-BPS Monopoles and Dyons via Resurgent Transseries

Radially symmetric non-BPS 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles and dyons are constructed as resurgent transseries: infinite sums of exponentially decaying terms, each multiplied by a factorially divergent fluctuation factor. All higher exponential terms are explicitly expressed in terms of the leading order solutions. In the BPS limit all fluctuation terms truncate.

Heisenberg-Euler and the Quantum Dilogarithm

A dispersion integral representation of the Heisenberg-Euler QED effective lagrangian is derived, with Faddeev's quantum dilogarithm as a generalized Borel kernel. The nonperturbative imaginary part of the effective lagrangian is expressed as the quantum dilogarithm, while the real part has the form of a dispersion integral involving both the quantum dilogarithm and its modular dual, a manifestation of electromagnetic duality. The Heisenberg-Euler effective lagrangian generates all one-loop QED scattering amplitudes in a constant external field, with the Lorentz invariants of the constant background electromagnetic field playing the role of the Mandelstam variables in conventional QED dispersion theory.

$c_{\rm eff}$ from Resurgence at the Stokes Line

In recent papers [1,2], a new method to cross the natural boundary has been proposed, and applied to Mordell-Borel integrals arising in the study of Chern-Simons theory, based on decompositions into {\it resurgent cyclic orbits}. Resurgent analysis on the Stokes line leads to a unique transseries decomposition in terms of unary false theta functions, which can be continued across the natural boundary to produce dual $q$-series whose integer-valued coefficients enumerate BPS states. This constitutes a deeper new manifestation of resurgence in quantum field theoretic path integrals. In this paper we show that the algebraic structure of the {\it resurgent cyclic orbits}, combined with just the leading term of the $q$-series, completely determines the large order rate of growth of the dual $q$-series coefficients. The essential exponent of this asymptotic growth has a Cardy-like interpretation [10] of an effective central charge in a 3 dimensional quantum field theory with $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry related to the Chern-Simons theory through the $3d$-$3d$ correspondence.

Tree-tubings and the combinatorics of resurgent Dyson-Schwinger equations

We give a novel combinatorial interpretation to the perturbative series solutions for a class of Dyson-Schwinger equations. We show how binary tubings of rooted trees with labels from an alphabet on the tubes, and where the labels satisfy certain compatibility constraints, can be used to give series solutions to Dyson-Schwinger equations with a single Mellin transform which is the reciprocal of a polynomial with rational roots, in a fully combinatorial way. Further, the structure of these tubings leads directly to systems of differential equations for the anomalous dimension that are ideally suited for resurgent analysis. We give a general result in the distinct root case, and investigate the effect of repeated roots, which drastically changes the asymptotics and the transseries structure.

Orientation Reversal and the Chern-Simons Natural Boundary

We show that the fundamental property of preservation of relations, underlying resurgent analysis, provides a new perspective on crossing a natural boundary, an important general problem in theoretical and mathematical physics. This reveals a deeper rigidity of resurgence in a quantum field theory. We study the non-perturbative completion of complex Chern-Simons theory that associates to a 3-manifold a collection of $q$-series invariants labeled by Spin$^c$ structures, for which crossing the natural boundary corresponds to orientation reversal of the 3-manifold. Our new resurgent perspective leads to a practical numerical algorithm that generates $q$-series which are dual to unary $q$-series composed of false theta functions. Until recently, these duals were only known in a limited number of cases, essentially based on Ramanujan's mock theta functions, and the common belief was that the more general duals might not even exist. Resurgence analysis identifies as primary objects Mordell integrals: transforms of resurgent functions. Their unique Borel summed transseries decomposition on either side of the Stokes line is the unique decomposition into real and imaginary parts. The latter are combinations of unary $q$-series in terms of $q$ and its modular counterpart $\tilde{q}$, and are resurgent by construction. The Mordell integral is analytic across the natural boundary of the $q$ and $\tilde{q}$ series, and uniqueness of a similar decomposition which preserves algebraic relations on the other side of the boundary defines the unique boundary crossing of the $q$ series. This continuation can be efficiently implemented numerically. This identifies known unique mock modular identities, and extends well beyond. The resurgent approach reveals new aspects, and is very different from other approaches based on indefinite theta series, Appell-Lerch sums, and logarithmic vertex operator algebras.

Resurgence of the Tilted Cusp Anomalous Dimension

We use resurgent extrapolation and continuation methods to extract detailed analytic information about the tilted cusp anomalous dimension solely from its weak coupling and strong coupling expansions. This enables accurate and smooth interpolation between the weak and strong coupling limits, and identifies the relevant singularities governing the finite radius of convergence of the weak coupling expansion and the asymptotic nature of the strong coupling expansion. The input data is purely perturbative, generated from the BES equations, and these resurgent methods extract accurate non-perturbative information which matches the underlying physical structure.

Going to the Other Side via the Resurgent Bridge

Using resurgent analysis we offer a novel mathematical perspective on a curious bijection (duality) that has many potential applications ranging from the theory of vertex algebras to the physics of SCFTs in various dimensions, to q-series invariants in low-dimensional topology that arise, e.g. in Vafa-Witten theory and in non-perturbative completion of complex Chern-Simons theory. In particular, we introduce explicit numerical algorithms that efficiently implement this bijection. This bijection is founded on preservation of relations, a fundamental property of resurgent functions. Using resurgent analysis we find new structures and patterns in complex Chern-Simons theory on closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds obtained by surgeries on hyperbolic twist knots. The Borel plane exhibits several intriguing hints of a new form of integrability. An important role in this analysis is played by the twisted Alexander polynomials and the adjoint Reidemeister torsion, which help us determine the Stokes data. The method of singularity elimination enables extraction of geometric data even for very distant Borel singularities, leading to detailed non-perturbative information from perturbative data. We also introduce a new double-scaling limit to probe 0-surgeries from the limiting $r\to\infty$ behavior of 1/r surgeries, and apply it to the family of hyperbolic twist knots.

Instantons or Renormalons? A Comment on phi4_4 Theory in the MS Scheme

We comment that the recent exact six-loop and seven-loop computations of renormalization group functions for the O(N)-symmetric four dimensional phi^4 quantum field theory show hints that the associated large order behavior is dominated by instantons rather than renormalons. This is consistent with a long-standing conjecture that renormalization group functions in the minimal subtraction (MS) renormalization scheme are not sensitive to renormalons.

Resurgence of the Effective Action in Inhomogeneous Fields

We show how background field inhomogeneities modify the non-perturbative structure of the effective action. The simple Borel poles of the Euler-Heisenberg effective action become branch points, and new branch points also appear, indicating new non-perturbative effects. This information is resurgently encoded in the perturbative weak field expansion, and becomes physically significant for strongly inhomogeneous fields. We also show that resurgent extrapolation methods permit the decoding of a surprising amount of non-perturbative information from a relatively modest amount of perturbative input, enabling accurate analytic continuations from weak field to strong field, and of a spatially dependent magnetic background to a time dependent electric background. These extrapolations are far superior to standard WKB and locally constant field approximations.

Entropy Suppression through Quantum Interference in Electric Pulses

The Schwinger process in strong electric fields creates particles and antiparticles that are entangled. The entropy of entanglement between particles and antiparticles has been found to be equal to the statistical Gibbs entropy of the produced system. Here we study the effect of quantum interference in sequences of electric pulses, and show that quantum interference suppresses the entanglement entropy of the created quantum state. This is potentially relevant to quantum-enhanced classical communications. Our results can be extended to a wide variety of two-level quantum systems.

Noise Effects on Pade Approximants and Conformal Maps

We analyze the properties of Pade and conformal map approximants for functions with branch points, in the situation where the expansion coefficients are only known with finite precision or are subject to noise. We prove that there is a universal scaling relation between the strength of the noise and the expansion order at which Pade or the conformal map breaks down. We illustrate this behavior with some physically relevant model test functions and with two non-trivial physical examples where the relevant Riemann surface has complicated structure

BPS Wilson loop in $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal $SU(N)$ "orientifold" gauge theory and weak-strong coupling interpolation

We consider the expectation value $\langle \cal W \rangle$ of the circular BPS Wilson loop in ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal $SU(N)$ gauge theory containing a vector multiplet coupled to two hypermultiplets in rank-2 symmetric and antisymmetric representations. This model admits a regular large $N$ expansion, is planar-equivalent to ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory and is expected to be dual to a certain orbifold/orientifold projection of AdS$_5\times S^5$ superstring theory. On the string theory side $\langle\cal W \rangle $ is represented by the path integral expanded near the same AdS$_2$ minimal surface as in the maximally supersymmetric case. Following the string theory argument in arXiv:2007.08512, we suggest that as in the ${\cal N}=4$ SYM case and in the ${\cal N}=2$ $SU(N) \times SU(N)$ superconformal quiver theory discussed in arXiv:2102.07696, the coefficient of the leading non-planar $1/N^2$ correction in $\langle\cal W \rangle $ should have the universal $λ^{3/2}$ scaling at large 't Hooft coupling. We confirm this prediction by starting with the localization matrix model representation for $\langle\cal W \rangle $. We complement the analytic derivation of the $λ^{3/2}$ scaling by a numerical high-precision resummation and extrapolation of the weak-coupling expansion using conformal mapping improved Padé analysis.

The BEST framework for the search for the QCD critical point and the chiral magnetic effect

The Beam Energy Scan Theory (BEST) Collaboration was formed with the goal of providing a theoretical framework for analyzing data from the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at the relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The physics goal of the BES program is the search for a conjectured QCD critical point as well as for manifestations of the chiral magnetic effect. We describe progress that has been made over the previous five years. This includes studies of the equation of state and equilibrium susceptibilities, the development of suitable initial state models, progress in constructing a hydrodynamic framework that includes fluctuations and anomalous transport effects, as well as the development of freezeout prescriptions and hadronic transport models. Finally, we address the challenge of integrating these components into a complete analysis framework. This document describes the collective effort of the BEST Collaboration and its collaborators around the world.
