Spectrum of singularities, analytic torsion and Calabi--Yau degenerations

We relate the spectrum of singularities to the geometry of degenerating Calabi--Yau manifolds through holomorphic analytic torsion. We express the leading asymptotic coefficients of the analytic torsion of holomorphic differential forms in terms of Hodge-theoretic invariants of vanishing cycles. For isolated hypersurface singularities, these formulas lead to the formulation of new higher Durfee--Saito conjectures bounding Hodge-filtration dimensions by the Milnor number and Eulerian numbers. We also prove that, for isolated quasi-homogeneous singularities, the spectral measure is dominated in convex order by the corresponding Irwin--Hall distribution. Applying the torsion formulas to the BCOV invariant yields a computable obstruction to birational smooth fillings. For isolated singularities, its local contribution is expressed in terms of Hertling's spectral variance and a Bernoulli sum determined by monodromy. As applications, we rule out birational smooth fillings for projective Calabi--Yau degenerations with smooth total space and singular central fiber having only ADE or terminal Brieskorn--Pham singularities, in relative dimension at least three, extending results of Voisin.

The Deligne-Riemann-Roch isomorphism

This work establishes the geometric component of Deligne's longstanding program on refined Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formulas expressed through determinants of cohomology. The approach relies on a newly developed universal category of Chern classes together with an associated relative intersection theory. As an example of the applications, we provide a structural description of the coefficients in the Knudsen-Mumford expansion and establish a fundamental Mumford-type isomorphism for the alternating product of Griffiths bundles.

The spectral genus of an isolated hypersurface singularity and a conjecture relating to the Milnor number

In this paper, we introduce the notion of spectral genus $\widetilde{p}_{g}$ of a germ of an isolated hypersurface singularity $(\mathbb{C}^{n+1}, 0) \to (\mathbb{C}, 0)$, defined as a sum of small exponents of monodromy eigenvalues. The number of these is equal to the geometric genus $p_{g}$, and hence $\widetilde{p}_g$ can be considered as a secondary invariant to it. We then explore a secondary version of the Durfee conjecture on $p_{g}$, and we predict an inequality between $\widetilde{p}_{g}$ and the Milnor number $μ$, to the effect that $$\widetilde{p}_g\leq\frac{μ-1}{(n+2)!}.$$ We provide evidence by confirming our conjecture in several cases, including homogeneous singularities and singularities with large Newton polyhedra, and quasi-homogeneous or irreducible curve singularities. We also show that a weaker inequality follows from Durfee's conjecture, and hence holds for quasi-homogeneous singularities and curve singularities. Our conjecture is shown to relate closely to the asymptotic behavior of the holomorphic analytic torsion of the sheaf of holomorphic functions on a degeneration of projective varieties, potentially indicating deeper geometric and analytic connections.

Deligne-Riemann-Roch and intersection bundles

This article is part of a series of works by the authors with the goal of completing a far-reaching program propounded by Deligne, aiming to extend the codimension one part of the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem from isomorphism classes of line bundles to isomorphisms thereof. The paper develops a relative functorial intersection theory with values in line bundles, together with a formalism that generalizes previous constructions by Deligne and Elkik, related to the right-hand side of the theorem.

Complex Chern--Simons bundles in the relative setting

Complex Chern-Simons bundles are line bundles with connection, originating in the study of quantization of moduli spaces of flat connections with complex gauge groups. In this paper we introduce and study these bundles in the families setting. The central object is a functorial direct image of characteristic classes of vector bundles with connections, for which we develop a formalism. Our strategy elaborates on Deligne-Elkik's intersection bundles, and a refined Chern-Simons theory which parallels the use of Bott-Chern classes in Arakelov geometry. In the context of moduli spaces, we are confronted with flat relative connections on families of Riemann surfaces. To be able to rely on the functorial approach, we prove canonical extension results to global connections, inspired by the deformation theory of harmonic maps in non-abelian Hodge theory. The relative complex Chern-Simons bundle $\mathcal{L}_{CS}$ is then defined as a functorial direct image of the second Chern class on the relative moduli space of flat vector bundles. We establish the crystalline nature of $\mathcal{L}_{CS}$, and the existence of a holomorphic extension of natural metrics from Arakelov geometry. The curvature of $\mathcal{L}_{CS}$ can be expressed in terms of the Atiyah-Bott-Goldman form, in agreement with the classical topological approach. To highlight a few applications, we first mention a characterization of projective structures of Riemann surfaces in terms of connections on intersection bundles. In particular, we settle a conjecture of Bertola-Korotkin-Norton on the comparison between the Bergman and the Bers projective structures. This is the problem of determining the accessory parameters of quasi-Fuchsian uniformizations. A conjecture of Cappell-Miller is also established, to the effect that their holomorphic torsion satisfies a Riemann-Roch formula.

BCOV invariants of Calabi--Yau manifolds and degenerations of Hodge structures

Calabi--Yau manifolds have risen to prominence in algebraic geometry, in part because of mirror symmetry and enumerative geometry. After Bershadsky--Cecotti--Ooguri--Vafa (BCOV), it is expected that genus 1 curve counting on a Calabi--Yau manifold is related to a conjectured invariant, only depending on the complex structure of the mirror, and built from Ray--Singer holomorphic analytic torsions. To this end, extending work of Fang--Lu--Yoshikawa in dimension 3, we introduce and study the BCOV invariant of Calabi--Yau manifolds of arbitrary dimension. To determine it, knowledge of its behaviour at the boundary of moduli spaces is imperative. We address this problem by proving precise asymptotics along one-parameter degenerations, in terms of topological data and intersection theory. Central to the approach are new results on degenerations of $L^2$ metrics on Hodge bundles, combined with information on the singularities of Quillen metrics in our previous work.

Singularities of metrics on Hodge bundles and their topological invariants

We consider degenerations of complex projective Calabi--Yau varieties and study the singularities of $L^2$, Quillen and BCOV metrics on Hodge and determinant bundles. The dominant and subdominant terms in the expansions of the metrics close to non-smooth fibers are shown to be related to well-known topological invariants of singularities, such as limit Hodge structures, vanishing cycles and log-canonical thresholds. We also describe corresponding invariants for more general degenerating families in the case of the Quillen metric.

Twisted Hilbert modular surfaces, arithmetic intersections and the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence

We study arithmetic intersections on twisted (quaternionic) Hilbert modular surfaces and Shimura curves over a real quadratic field. Our first main result is the determination of the degree of the top arithmetic Todd class of an arithmetic twisted Hilbert modular surface. This quantity is then related to the arithmetic volume of a Shimura curve, via the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem and the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence.

Riemann-Roch isometries in the non-compact orbifold setting

We generalize work of Deligne and Gillet-Soulé on a Riemann-Roch type isometry, to the case of the trivial sheaf on cusp compactifications of Riemann surfaces $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$, for $Γ\subset PSL_{2}(\mathbb{R})$ a fuchsian group of the first kind, equipped with the Poincaré metric. This metric is singular at cusps and elliptic fixed points, and the results of Deligne and Gillet-Soulé do not apply to this setting. Our theorem relates the determinant of cohomology of the trivial sheaf, with an explicit Quillen type metric in terms of the Selberg zeta function of $Γ$, to a metrized version of the $ψ$ line bundle of the theory of moduli spaces of pointed orbicurves, and the self-intersection bundle of a suitable twist of the canonical sheaf $ω_{X}$. We make use of surgery techniques through Mayer-Vietoris formulae for determinants of laplacians, in order to reduce to explicit evaluations of such for model hyperbolic cusps and cones. We derive an arithmetic Riemann-Roch formula, that applies in particular to integral models of modular curves with elliptic fixed points. As an application, we treat in detail the case of the modular curve $X(1)$. From this, we obtain the Selberg zeta special value $Z^{\prime}(1,PSL_{2}(\mathbb{Z}))$ in terms of logarithmic derivatives of Dirichlet $L$ functions. Our work finds its place in the program initiated by Burgos-Kramer-Kühn of extending arithmetic intersection theory to singular hermitian vector bundles.

Flat line bundles and the Cappell-Miller torsion in Arakelov geometry

In this paper, we extend Deligne's functorial Riemann-Roch isomorphism for hermitian holomorphic line bundles on Riemann surfaces to the case of flat, not necessarily unitary connections. The Quillen metric and star-product of Gillet-Soule are replaced with complex valued logarithms. On the determinant of cohomology side, the idea goes back to Fay's holomorphic extension of determinants of Dolbeault laplacians, and it is shown here to be equivalent to the holomorphic Cappell-Miller torsion. On the Deligne pairing side, the logarithm is a refinement of the intersection connections considered in previous work. The construction naturally leads to an Arakelov theory for flat line bundles on arithmetic surfaces and produces arithmetic intersection numbers valued in ${\mathbb C}/πi {\mathbb Z}$. In this context we prove an arithmetic Riemann-Roch theorem. This realizes a program proposed by Cappell-Miller to show that the holomorphic torsion exhibits properties similar to those of the Quillen metric proved by Bismut, Gillet and Soule. Finally, we give examples that clarify the kind of invariants that the formalism captures; namely, periods of differential forms.

Deligne pairings and families of rank one local systems on algebraic curves

For smooth families of projective algebraic curves, we extend the notion of intersection pairing of metrized line bundles to a pairing on line bundles with flat relative connections. In this setting, we prove the existence of a canonical and functorial "intersection" connection on the Deligne pairing. A relationship is found with the holomorphic extension of analytic torsion, and in the case of trivial fibrations we show that the Deligne isomorphism is flat with respect to the connections we construct. Finally, we give an application to the construction of a meromorphic connection on the hyperholomorphic line bundle over the twistor space of rank one flat connections on a Riemann surface.

The arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem for general projective morphisms

The classical arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem can be applied only to projective morphisms that are smooth over the complex numbers. In this paper we generalize the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem to the case of general projective morphisms between regular arithmetic varieties. To this end we rely on the theory of generalized analytic torsion developed by the authors.

An arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel theorem for singular hermitian line bundles and cusp forms

We prove an arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel type theorem for semi-positive singular hermitian line bundles of finite height. In particular, the theorem applies to the log-singular metrics of Burgos-Kramer-Kühn. Our theorem is thus suitable for application to some non-compact Shimura varieties with their bundles of cusp forms. As an application, we treat the case of Hilbert modular surfaces, establishing an arithmetic analogue of the classical result expressing the dimensions of spaces of cusp forms in terms of special values of Dedekind zeta functions.

Hermitian structures on the derived category of coherent sheaves

The main objective of the present paper is to set up the theoretical basis and the language needed to deal with the problem of direct images of hermitian vector bundles for projective non-necessarily smooth morphisms. To this end, we first define hermitian structures on the objects of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a smooth complex variety. Secondly we extend the theory of Bott-Chern classes to these hermitian structures. Finally we introduce the category $\oSm_{\ast/\CC}$ whose morphisms are projective morphisms with a hermitian structure on the relative tangent complex.

Heights and metrics with logarithmic singularities

We prove lower bound and finiteness properties for arakelovian heights with respect to pre-log-log hermitian ample line bundles. These heights were introduced by Burgos, Kramer and Kühn, in their extension of the arithmetic intersection theory of Gillet and Soulé, aimed to deal with hermitian vector bundles equipped with metrics admitting suitable logarithmic singularities. Our results generalize the corresponding properties for the heights of Bost-Gillet-Soulé, as well as the properties established by Faltings for heights of points attached to hermitian line bundles whose metrics have logarithmic singularities. We also discuss various geometric constructions where such pre-log-log hermitian ample line bundles naturally arise.
