An AC electric trap for ground-state molecules

We here report on the realization of an electrodynamic trap, capable of trapping neutral atoms and molecules in both low-field and high-field seeking states. Confinement in three dimensions is achieved by switching between two electric field configurations that have a saddle-point at the center of the trap, i.e., by alternating a focusing and a defocusing force in each direction. AC trapping of 15ND3 molecules is experimentally demonstrated, and the stability of the trap is studied as a function of the switching frequency. A 1 mK sample of 15ND3 molecules in the high-field seeking component of the |J,K>=|1,1> level, the ground-state of para-ammonia, is trapped in a volume of about 1 mm^3.

Deceleration and electrostatic trapping of OH radicals

A pulsed beam of ground state OH radicals is slowed down using a Stark decelerator and is subsequently loaded into an electrostatic trap. Characterization of the molecular beam production, deceleration and trap loading process is performed via laser induced fluorescence detection inside the quadrupole trap. Depending on details of the trap loading sequence, typically $10^5$ OH ($X^2Π_{3/2}, J=3/2$) radicals are trapped at a density of around $10^7$ cm$^{-3}$ and at temperatures in the 50-500 mK range. The 1/e trap lifetime is around 1.0 second.

Phase Space Manipulation of Cold Free Radical OH Molecules

We report bunching, slowing, and acceleration of a supersonically cooled beam of diatomic hydroxyl radicals (OH). \textit{In situ} observation of laser-induced fluorescence along the beam propagation path allows for detailed characterization of longitudinal phase-space manipulation of OH molecules through the Stark effect by precisely sequenced inhomogeneous electric fields.
