Tautological modular forms of level two and degree two

We show how to use divisors on the projectivized Hodge bundle to construct special vector-valued modular forms and then apply invariant theory to construct all vector-valued Siegel modular forms of level two and degree two. Thus we construct all modular forms in terms of certain basic modular forms that are intimately connected to the moduli of curves of genus two.

On the number of real forms of a complex variety

We give a bound on the number of weighted real forms of a complex variety with finite automorphism group, where the weight is the inverse of the number of automorphisms of the real form. We give another bound involving the Sylow 2-subgroup and as an application we give bounds on real forms of plane curves.

The cycle class of the supersingular locus of principally polarized abelian varieties

We prove a formula for the cycle class of the supersingular locus in the Chow ring with rational coefficients of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties in characteristic $p$. This formula determines this class as a monomial in the Chern classes of the Hodge bundle up to a factor that is a polynomial in $p$. This factor is known for $g\leq 3$. We determine the factor for $g=4$.

Effective divisors on projectivized Hodge bundles and modular forms

We construct vector-valued modular forms on moduli spaces of curves and abelian varieties using effective divisors in projectivized Hodge bundles over moduli of curves. Cycle relations tell us the weight of these modular forms. In particular we construct basic modular forms for genus $2$ and $3$. We also discuss modular forms on the moduli of hyperelliptic curves. In that case the relative canonical bundle is a pull back of a line bundle on a ${\mathbb P}^1$-bundle over the moduli of hyperelliptic curves and we extend that line bundle to a compactification so that its push down is (close to) the Hodge bundle and use this to construct modular forms. In an appendix we use our method to calculate divisor classes in the dual projectivized $k$-Hodge bundle determined by Gheorghita-Tarasca and by Korotkin-Sauvaget-Zograf.

Modular forms via invariant theory

We discuss two simple but useful observations that allow the construction of modular forms from given ones using invariant theory. The first one deals with elliptic modular forms and their derivatives, and generalizes the Rankin-Cohen bracket, while the second one deals with vector-valued modular forms of genus greater than one.

Curves over finite fields and moduli spaces

This is a survey paper dealing with moduli aspects of curves over finite fields. It discusses counting points of moduli spaces, relations with modular forms and stratifications on moduli spaces.

Generating Picard modular forms by means of invariant theory

We use the description of the Picard modular surface for discriminant $-3$ as a moduli space of curves of genus $3$ to generate all vector-valued Picard modular forms from bi-covariants for the action of ${GL}_2$ on the space of pairs of binary forms of bidegree $(4,1)$. The universal binary forms of degree $4$ and $1$ correspond to a meromorphic modular form of weight $(4,-2)$ and a holomorphic Eisenstein series of weight $(1,1)$.

Picard modular forms and the cohomology of local systems on a Picard modular surface

We formulate a detailed conjectural Eichler-Shimura type formula for the cohomology of local systems on a Picard modular surface associated to the group of unitary similitudes $\mathrm{GU}(2,1,\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3}))$. The formula is based on counting points over finite fields on curves of genus three which are cyclic triple covers of the projective line. Assuming the conjecture we are able to calculate traces of Hecke operators on spaces of Picard modular forms. We provide ample evidence for the conjectural formula. Along the way we prove new results on characteristic polynomials of Frobenius acting on the first cohomology group of cyclic triple covers of any genus, dimension formulas for spaces of Picard modular forms and formulas for the numerical Euler characteristics of the local systems.

Lifting Chern classes by means of Ekedahl-Oort strata

The moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties $A_g$ of genus g is defined over the integers and admits a minimal compactification $A_g^*$, also defined over the integers. The Hodge bundle over $A_g$ has its Chern classes in the Chow ring of $A_g$ with rational coefficients. We show that over the prime field $F_p$, these Chern classes naturally lift to $A_g^*$ and do so in the best possible way: despite the highly singular nature of $A_g^*$ they are represented by algebraic cycles on $A_g^*\otimes F_p$ which define elements in its bivariant Chow ring. This is in contrast to the situation in the analytic topology, where these Chern classes have canonical lifts to the complex cohomology of the minimal compactification as Goresky-Pardon classes, which are known to define nontrivial Tate extensions inside the mixed Hodge structure on this cohomology.

Concomitants of Ternary Quartics and Vector-valued Siegel and Teichmüller Modular Forms of Genus Three

We show how one can use the representation theory of ternary quartics to construct all vector-valued Siegel modular forms and Teichmüller modular forms of degree 3. The relation between the order of vanishing of a concomitant on the locus of double conics and the order of vanishing of the corresponding modular form on the hyperelliptic locus plays an important role. We also determine the connection between Teichmüller cusp forms on \overline{M}_g and the middle cohomology of symplectic local systems on M_g. In genus 3, we make this explicit in a large number of cases.

Covariants of binary sextics and modular forms of degree 2 with character

We use covariants of binary sextics to describe the structure of modules of scalar-valued or vector-valued Siegel modular forms of degree 2 with character, over the ring of scalar-valued Siegel modular forms of even weight. For a modular form defined by a covariant we express the order of vanishing along the locus of products of elliptic curves in terms of the covariant.

On vector-valued Siegel modular forms of degree 2 and weight (j,2)

We formulate a conjecture that describes the vector-valued Siegel modular forms of degree 2 and level 2 of weight Sym^j det^2 and provide some evidence for it. We construct such modular forms of weight (j,2) via covariants of binary sextics and calculate their Fourier expansions illustrating the effectivity of the approach via covariants. Two appendices contain related results of Chenevier; in particular a proof of the fact that every modular form of degree 2 and level 2 and weight (j,1) vanishes.

Covariants of binary sextics and vector-valued Siegel modular forms of genus two

We extend Igusa's description of the relation between invariants of binary sextics and Siegel modular forms of degree two to a relation between covariants and vector-valued Siegel modular forms of degree two. We show how this relation can be used to effectively calculate the Fourier expansions of Siegel modular forms of degree two.

The cycle classes of divisorial Maroni loci

We determine the cycle classes of effective divisors in the compactified Hurwitz spaces of curves of genus g with a linear system of degree d that extend the Maroni divisors on the open Hurwitz space. Our approach uses Chern classes associated to a global-to-local evaluation map of a vector bundle over a generic $P^1$-bundle over the Hurwitz space.
