An Atiyah-Bott formula for the Lefschetz number of a singular foliation

This paper presents a formula for the Lefschetz number of a geometric endomorphism in the style of the Atiyah-Bott theorem. The underlying data consist, first, of a compact manifold and a nowhere vanishing smooth real vector field $\mathcal{T}$ that preserves some Riemannian metric, and second, a sequence of first order operators on sections of Hermitian vector bundles with connection whose curvature is annihilated by $\mathcal{T}$ and for which parallel transport along integral curves of $\mathcal{T}$ is unitary. Assuming that the operators of the sequence commute with the various covariant derivatives $\mathcal{L}_{\mathcal{T}}=\nabla_{\mathcal{T}}$ and that their restriction to the spaces of sections annihilated by $\mathcal{L}_{\mathcal{T}}$ form a complex, an ellipticity condition gives finite-dimensionality of the resulting equivariant cohomology spaces. The Atiyah-Bott framework, adapted to give a geometric endomorphism only for the complex of $\mathcal{L}_{\mathcal{T}}$-parallel sections, together with the finiteness of cohomology allows for the definition of a Lefschetz number. Replacing the condition that the fixed points of the equivariant map $f$ associated with the endomorphism be simple by a condition on wave front sets, which is the underlying condition of Atiyah and Bott, yields that the set of closures of orbits by $\mathcal{T}$ left invariant by $f$ is finite, and then a formula similar to theirs, now relating the Lefschetz number with traces along these orbits.

Elliptic complexes of first-order cone operators: ideal boundary conditions

The purpose of this paper is to provide a detailed description of the spaces that can be specified as $L^2$ domains for the operators of a first order elliptic complex on a compact manifold with conical singularities. This entails an analysis of the nature of the minimal domain and of a complementary space in the maximal domain of each of the operators. The key technical result is the nondegeneracy of a certain pairing of cohomology classes associated with the indicial complex. It is further proved that the set of choices of domains leading to Hilbert complexes in the sense of Brüning and Lesch form a variety, as well as a theorem establishing a necessary and sufficient condition for the operator in a given degree to map its maximal domain into the minimal domain of the next operator.

Spectrally unstable domains

Let $H$ be a separable Hilbert space, $A_c:\mathcal D_c\subset H\to H$ a densely defined unbounded operator, bounded from below, let $\mathcal D_{\min}$ be the domain of the closure of $A_c$ and $\mathcal D_{\max}$ that of the adjoint. Assume that $\mathcal D_{\max}$ with the graph norm is compactly contained in $H$ and that $\mathcal D_{\min}$ has finite positive codimension in $\mathcal D_{\max}$. Then the set of domains of selfadjoint extensions of $A_c$ has the structure of a finite-dimensional manifold $\mathfrak {SA}$ and the spectrum of each of its selfadjoint extensions is bounded from below. If $ζ$ is strictly below the spectrum of $A$ with a given domain $\mathcal D_0\in \mathfrak {SA}$, then $ζ$ is not in the spectrum of $A$ with domain $\mathcal D\in \mathfrak {SA}$ near $\mathcal D_0$. But $\mathfrak {SA}$ contains elements $\mathcal D_0$ with the property that for every neighborhood $U$ of $\mathcal D_0$ and every $ζ\in \mathbb R$ there is $\mathcal D\in U$ such that $\mathrm{spec}(A_\mathcal D)\cap (-\infty,ζ)\ne \emptyset$. We characterize these "spectrally unstable" domains as being those satisfying a nontrivial relation with the domain of the Friedrichs extension of $A_c$.

The Friedrichs extension for elliptic wedge operators of second order

The paper provides an explicit description of the structure of the domain of the Friedrichs extension of a second order semibounded elliptic wedge operator, initially defined on smooth functions or sections with compact support away from the boundary, under some mild assumptions on the indicial and normal families.

Boundary value problems for elliptic wedge operators: the first order case

This note is a description of some of the results obtained by the authors in connection with the problem in the title. These, discussed following a summary of background material concerning wedge differential operators, consist of the notion of trace bundle, an extension of the Douglis-Nirenberg calculus to handle spaces of anisotropic varying regularity and associated pseudodifferential operators, and boundary value problems proper, the latter in the first order case. The concepts concerning the main results are illustrated with simple examples.

Boundary value problems for first order elliptic wedge operators

We develop an elliptic theory based in $L^2$ of boundary value problems for general wedge differential operators of first order under only mild assumptions on the boundary spectrum. In particular, we do not require the indicial roots to be constant along the base of the boundary fibration. Our theory includes as a special case the classical theory of elliptic boundary value problems for first order operators with and without the Shapiro-Lopatinskii condition, and can be thought of as a natural extension of that theory to the geometrically and analytically relevant class of wedge operators. Wedge operators arise in the global analysis on manifolds with incomplete edge singularities. Our theory settles, in the first order case, the long-standing open problem to develop a robust elliptic theory of boundary value problems for such operators.

Elliptic systems of variable order

The general theory of boundary value problems for linear elliptic wedge operators (on smooth manifolds with boundary) leads naturally, even in the scalar case, to the need to consider vector bundles over the boundary together with general smooth fiberwise multiplicative group actions. These actions, essentially trivial (and therefore invisible) in the case of regular boundary value problems, are intimately connected with what passes for Poisson and trace operators, and to pseudodifferential boundary conditions in the more general situation. Here the part of the theory pertaining pseudodifferential operators is presented in its entirety. The symbols for the latter operators are defined with the aid of an intertwining of the actions. Also presented here are the ancillary Sobolev spaces, an index theorem for the elliptic elements of the pseudodifferential calculus, and the essential ingredients of the APS boundary condition in the more general theory.

Complex b-manifolds

A complex $b$-structure on a manifold $\M$ with boundary is an involutive subbundle $\bT^{0,1}\M$ of the complexification of $\bT\M$ with the property that $\C\bT\M = \bT^{0,1}\M + \bar{\bT^{0,1}\M}$ as a direct sum; the interior of $\M$ is a complex manifold. The complex $b$-structure determines an elliptic complex of $b$-operators and induces a rich structure on the boundary of $\M$. We study the cohomology of the indicial complex of the $b$-Dolbeault complex.

The kernel bundle of a holomorphic Fredholm family

Let $\Y$ be a smooth connected manifold, $Σ\subset\C$ an open set and $(σ,y)\to\scrP_y(σ)$ a family of unbounded Fredholm operators $D\subset H_1\to H_2$ of index 0 depending smoothly on $(y,σ)\in \Y\times Σ$ and holomorphically on $σ$. We show how to associate to $\scrP$, under mild hypotheses, a smooth vector bundle $\kerb\to\Y$ whose fiber over a given $y\in \Y$ consists of classes, modulo holomorphic elements, of meromorphic elements $ϕ$ with $\scrP_yϕ$ holomorphic. As applications we give two examples relevant in the general theory of boundary value problems for elliptic wedge operators.

Hypoellipticity and vanishing theorems

Let $-\im\Lie_\T$ (essentially Lie derivative with respect to $\T$, a smooth nowhere zero real vector field) and $P$ be commuting differential operators, respectively of orders 1 and $m\geq 1$, the latter formally normal, both acting on sections of a vector bundle over a closed manifold. It is shown that if $P+(-i\Lie_\T)^m$ is elliptic then the restriction of $-\im\Lie_\T$ to $\Dom\subset \ker P\subset L^2$ yields a selfadjoint operator $-\im\Lie_\T|_\Dom:\Dom\subset\ker P\to \ker P$ with compact resolvent ($\Dom$ is specified carefully). It is also shown that, in the presence of an additional hypothesis on microlocal hypoellipticity of $P$, $-\im\Lie_\T|_\Dom$ is semi-bounded. These results are applied to CR manifolds on which $\T$ acts as an infinitesimal CR transformation which are then shown to yield versions of Kodaira's vanishing theorem.

On the closure of elliptic wedge operators

We prove a semi-Fredholm theorem for the minimal extension of elliptic operators on manifolds with wedge singularities and give, under suitable assumptions, a full asymptotic expansion of the trace of the resolvent.

Trace expansions for elliptic cone operators with stationary domains

We analyze the behavior of the trace of the resolvent of an elliptic cone differential operator as the spectral parameter tends to infinity. The resolvent splits into two components, one associated with the minimal extension of the operator, and another, of finite rank, depending on the particular choice of domain. We give a full asymptotic expansion of the first component and expand the component of finite rank in the case where the domain is stationary. The results make use, and develop further, our previous investigations on the analytic and geometric structure of the resolvent. The analysis of nonstationary domains, considerably more intricate, is pursued elsewhere.

A conic manifold perspective of elliptic operators on graphs

We give a simple, explicit, sufficient condition for the existence of a sector of minimal growth for second order regular singular differential operators on graphs. We specifically consider operators with a singular potential of Coulomb type and base our analysis on the theory of elliptic cone operators.

Geometry and spectra of closed extensions of elliptic cone operators

We study the geometry of the set of closed extensions of index 0 of an elliptic cone operator and its model operator in connection with the spectra of the extensions, and give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of rays of minimal growth for such operators.

Resolvents of elliptic cone operators

We prove the existence of sectors of minimal growth for general closed extensions of elliptic cone operators under natural ellipticity conditions. This is achieved by the construction of a suitable parametrix and reduction to the boundary. Special attention is devoted to the clarification of the analytic structure of the resolvent.

A note on the index of cone differential operators

We prove that the index formula for $b$-elliptic cone differential operators given by M. Lesch holds verbatim for operators whose coefficients are not necessarily independent of the normal variable near the boundary. We also show that, for index purposes, the operators can always be considered on weighted Sobolev spaces.

Adjoints of elliptic cone operators

We study the adjointness problem for the closed extensions of a general b-elliptic operator A in x^{-ν}Diff^m_b(M;E), ν>0, initially defined as an unbounded operator A:C_c^\infty(M;E)\subset x^μL^2_b(M;E)\to x^μL^2_b(M;E), μ\in \R. The case where A is a symmetric semibounded operator is of particular interest, and we give a complete description of the domain of the Friedrichs extension of such an operator.
