A Quantum Dominant Energy Condition

We propose a quantum dominant energy condition (QDEC) for the stress tensor in the context of quantum field theory in curved spacetimes. A rigorous proof is given for the case of Rindler wedges, and a heuristic discussion about possible generalizations to more general geometric setups, including curved spacetime, is provided. In Minkowski spacetime, we establish a connection with state recovery bounds. We illustrate the QDEC for coherent states of the free scalar field, where it turns out to be related to the ordinary DEC for the stress tensor of the classical solution that defines the coherent state.

Bekenstein's bound for wave packets

Let $B$ be a spatial region of width $2R$ and $\Phi$ a Klein-Gordon wave packet localized in $B$ at time zero. We show the inequality $S \leq 2\pi R E$; here, $S$ is the entropy of $\Phi$ contained in a region $B$, and $E$ is the energy content of $\Phi$ within $B$. We consider a wider setting and formulate a variational problem aimed at minimizing our bound when $\Phi$ is not localized in $B$. Our inequality holds in more generality in the framework of local, Poincar\'e covariant nets of standard subspaces and is related to the Bekenstein inequality. We point out a general bound that is compatible with the recent numerical computations by Bostelmann, Cadamuro, and Minz concerning the one-particle modular Hamiltonian of a scalar massive quantum Klein-Gordon field. We also provide a version of the entropy balance and ant formulas for wave packets.

The modular Hamiltonian in asymptotically flat spacetime conformal to Minkowski

We consider a four-dimensional globally hyperbolic spacetime $(M,g)$ conformal to Minkowski spacetime, together with a massless, conformally coupled scalar field. Using a bulk-to-boundary correspondence, one can establish the existence of an injective $*$-homomorphism $\Upsilon_M$ between $\mathcal{W}(M)$, the Weyl algebra of observables on $M$ and a counterpart which is defined intrinsically on future null infinity $\Im^+\simeq\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{S}^2$, a component of the conformal boundary of $(M,g)$. Using invariance under the asymptotic symmetry group of $\Im^+$, we can individuate thereon a distinguished two-point correlation function whose pull-back to $M$ via $\Upsilon_M$ identifies a quasi-free Hadamard state for the bulk algebra of observables. In this setting, if we consider $\mathsf{V}^+_x$, a future light cone stemming from $x\in M$ as well as $\mathcal{W}(\mathsf{V}^+_x)=\mathcal{W}(M)|_{\mathsf{V}^+_x}$, its counterpart at the boundary is the Weyl subalgebra generated by suitable functions localized in $\mathsf{K}_x$, a positive half strip on $\Im^+$. To each such cone, we associate a standard subspace of the boundary one-particle Hilbert space, which coincides with the one associated naturally to $\mathsf{K}_x$. We extend such correspondence replacing $\mathsf{K}_x$ and $\mathsf{V}^+_x$ with deformed counterparts, denoted by $\mathsf{S}_C$ and $\mathsf{V}_C$. In addition, since the one particle Hilbert space at the boundary decomposes as a direct integral on the sphere of $U(1)$-currents defined on the real line, we prove that also the generator of the modular group associated to the standard subspace of $\mathsf{V}_C$ decomposes as a suitable direct integral. This result allows us to study the relative entropy between coherent states of the algebras associated to the deformed cones $\mathsf{V}_C$ establishing the quantum null energy condition.

The fermionic massless modular Hamiltonian

We provide an explicit expression for the modular hamiltonian of the von Neumann algebras associated to the unit double cone for the (fermionic) quantum field theories of the 2-component Weyl (helicity 1/2) field, and of the 4-component massless Dirac and Majorana fields. To this end, we represent the one particle spaces of these theories in terms of solutions of the corresponding wave equations, and obtain the action of the modular group on them. As an application, we compute the relative entropy between the vacuum of the massless Majorana field and one particle states associated to waves with Cauchy data localized in the spatial unit ball.

Quasi-free isomorphisms of second quantisation algebras and modular theory

Using Araki-Yamagami's characterization of quasi-equivalence for quasi-free representations of the CCRs, we provide an abstract criterion for the existence of isomorphisms of second quantization local von Neumann algebras induced by Bogolubov transformations in terms of the respective one particle modular operators. We discuss possible applications to the problem of local normality of vacua of Klein-Gordon fields with different masses.

The massless modular Hamiltonian

We compute the vacuum local modular Hamiltonian associated with a space ball region in the free scalar massless Quantum Field Theory. We give an explicit expression on the one particle Hilbert space in terms of the higher dimensional Legendre differential operator. The quadratic form of the massless modular Hamiltonian is expressed in terms of an integral of the energy density with the parabolic distribution. We then get the formula for the local entropy of a wave packet. This gives the vacuum relative entropy of a coherent state on the double cone von Neumann algebras associated with the free scalar QFT. Among other points, we provide the passivity characterisation of the modular Hamiltonian within the standard subspace setup.

Scaling limits of lattice quantum fields by wavelets

We present a rigorous renormalization group scheme for lattice quantum field theories in terms of operator algebras. The renormalization group is considered as an inductive system of scaling maps between lattice field algebras. We construct scaling maps for scalar lattice fields using Daubechies' wavelets, and show that the inductive limit of free lattice ground states exists and the limit state extends to the familiar massive continuum free field, with the continuum action of spacetime translations. In particular, lattice fields are identified with the continuum field smeared with Daubechies' scaling functions. We compare our scaling maps with other renormalization schemes and their features, such as the momentum shell method or block-spin transformations.

Operator-algebraic renormalization and wavelets

We report on a rigorous operator-algebraic renormalization group scheme and construct the continuum free field as the scaling limit of Hamiltonian lattice systems using wavelet theory. A renormalization group step is determined by the scaling equation identifying lattice observables with the continuum field smeared by compactly supported wavelets. Causality follows from Lieb-Robinson bounds for harmonic lattice systems. The scheme is related with the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz and augments the semi-continuum limit of quantum systems.

Perturbative Algebraic Quantum Field Theory on Quantum Spacetime: Adiabatic and Ultraviolet Convergence

The quantum structure of Spacetime at the Planck scale suggests the use, in defining interactions between fields, of the Quantum Wick product. The resulting theory is ultraviolet finite, but subject to an adiabatic cutoff in time which seems difficult to remove. We solve this problem here by another strategy: the fields at a point in the interaction Lagrangian are replaced by the fields at a quantum point, described by an optimally localized state on QST; the resulting Lagrangian density agrees with the previous one after spacetime integration, but gives rise to a different interaction hamiltonian. But now the methods of perturbative Algebraic Quantum Field Theory can be applied, and produce an ultraviolet finite perturbation expansion of the interacting observables. If the obtained theory is tested in an equilibrium state at finite temperature the adiabatic cutoff in time becomes immaterial, namely it has no effect on the correlation function at any order in perturbation theory. Moreover, the interacting vacuum state can be obtained in the vanishing temperature limit. It is nevertheless important to stress that the use of states which are optimally localized for a given observer brakes Lorentz invariance at the very beginning.

Quantum Spacetime and the Universe at the Big Bang, vanishing interactions and fading degrees of freedom

As discussed in arXiv:1501.03298, Physics suggests that, close to cosmological singularities, the effective Planck length diverges, hence a "quantum point" becomes infinitely extended. We argue that, as a consequence, at the origin of times spacetime might reduce effectively to a single point and interactions disappear. This last point is supported by converging evidences in two different approaches to interacting quantum fiedls on Quantum Spacetime: the field operators evaluated at a "quantum point" converge to zero, and so do the lowest order expressions for interacting fields in the Yang Feldman approach, while, at all orders we find convergence to zero of the interacting field operators obtained adapting methods of perturbative Algebraic Quantum Field Theory to Quantum Spacetime, with a novel picture of the effective Lagrangian introduced in arXiv:1906.05855. This novel picture mantains the ultraviolet finiteness of the perturbation expansion but allows us to prove also the convergence in the adiabatic limit. It remains an open question whether the S matrix itself converges to unity and whether the limit in which the effective Planck length diverges is a unique initial condition or an unreachable limit, and only different asymptotics matter.

Asymptotic morphisms and superselection theory in the scaling limit II: analysis of some models

We introduced in a previous paper a general notion of asymptotic morphism of a given local net of observables, which allows to describe the sectors of a corresponding scaling limit net. Here, as an application, we illustrate the general framework by analyzing the Schwinger model, which features confined charges. In particular, we explicitly construct asymptotic morphisms for these sectors in restriction to the subnet generated by the derivatives of the field and momentum at time zero. As a consequence, the confined charges of the Schwinger model are in principle accessible to observation. We also study the obstructions, that can be traced back to the infrared singular nature of the massless free field in d=2, to perform the same construction for the complete Schwinger model net. Finally, we exhibit asymptotic morphisms for the net generated by the massive free charged scalar field in four dimensions, where no infrared problems appear in the scaling limit.

Pale Glares of Dark Matter in Quantum Spacetime

A U(1) gauge theory turns, on physically motivated models of Quantum Spacetime, into a U($\infty$) gauge theory, hence free classical electrodynamics is no longer free and neutral fields may have electromagnetic interactions. We discuss the last point for scalar fields, possibly describing dark matter; we have in mind the gravitational collapse of binary systems or future applications to self gravitating Bose-Einstein condensates as possible sources of evidence of quantum gravitational phenomena. The effects so far considered, however, seem too faint to be detectable at present.

Quantum Spacetime and Algebraic Quantum Field Theory

We review the investigations on the quantum structure of spactime, to be found at the Planck scale if one takes into account the operational limitations to localization of events which result from the concurrence of Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity. We also discuss the different approaches to (perturbative) Quantum Field Theory on Quantum Spacetime, and some of the possible cosmological consequences.

On Quantum Spacetime and the horizon problem

In the special case of a spherically symmetric solution of Einstein equations coupled to a scalar massless field, we examine the consequences on the exact solution imposed by a semiclassical treatment of gravitational interaction when the scalar field is quantized. In agreement with the work of Doplicher, Fredenhagen and Roberts (DFR), imposing the principle of gravitational stability against localization of events, we find that the region where an event is localized, or where initial conditions can be assigned, has a minimal extension, of the order of the Planck length. This conclusion, though limited to the case of spherical symmetry, is more general than that of DFR, since it does not require the use of the notion of energy through the Heisenberg Principle, nor of any approximation as the linearized Einstein equations. We shall then describe the influence of this minimal length scale in a cosmological model, namely a simple universe filled with radiation, which is effectively described by a conformally coupled scalar field in a conformal KMS state. Solving the backreaction, a power law inflation scenario appears close to the initial singularity. Furthermore, the initial singularity becomes light like and thus the standard horizon problem is avoided in this simple model. This indication goes in the same direction as those drawn at a heuristic level from a full use of the principle of gravitational stability against localization of events, which point to a background dependence of the effective Planck length, through which a-causal effects may be transmitted.

Asymptotic morphisms and superselection theory in the scaling limit

Given a local Haag-Kastler net of von Neumann algebras and one of its scaling limit states, we introduce a variant of the notion of asymptotic morphism by Connes and Higson, and we show that the unitary equivalence classes of (localized) morphisms of the scaling limit theory of the original net are in bijection with classes of suitable pairs of such asymptotic morphisms. In the process, we also show that the quasi-local C*-algebras of two nets are isomorphic under very general hypotheses, and we construct an extension of the scaling algebra whose representation on the scaling limit Hilbert space contains the local von Neumann algebras. We also study the relation between our asymptotic morphisms and superselection sectors preserved in the scaling limit.

Scaling limits of integrable quantum field theories

Short distance scaling limits of a class of integrable models on two-dimensional Minkowski space are considered in the algebraic framework of quantum field theory. Making use of the wedge-local quantum fields generating these models, it is shown that massless scaling limit theories exist, and decompose into (twisted) tensor products of chiral, translation-dilation covariant field theories. On the subspace which is generated from the vacuum by the observables localized in finite light ray intervals, this symmetry can be extended to the Möbius group. The structure of the interval-localized algebras in the chiral models is discussed in two explicit examples.

From global symmetries to local currents: the free (scalar) case in 4 dimensions

Within the framework of algebraic quantum field theory, we propose a new method of constructing local generators of (global) gauge symmetries in field theoretic models, starting from the existence of unitary operators implementing locally the flip automorphism on the doubled theory. We show, in the simple example of the internal symmetries of a multiplet of free scalar fields, that through the pointlike limit of such local generators the conserved Wightman currents associated with the symmetries are recovered.

On dilation symmetries arising from scaling limits

Quantum field theories, at short scales, can be approximated by a scaling limit theory. In this approximation, an additional symmetry is gained, namely dilation covariance. To understand the structure of this dilation symmetry, we investigate it in a nonperturbative, model independent context. To that end, it turns out to be necessary to consider non-pure vacuum states in the limit. These can be decomposed into an integral of pure states; we investigate how the symmetries and observables of the theory behave under this decomposition. In particular, we consider several natural conditions of increasing strength that yield restrictions on the decomposed dilation symmetry.
