Parity Effects and Higher Order Tunneling in Superconducting SET Transistors

Single electron tunneling into small superconducting islands is sensitive to the gap energy of the excitations created in the process and, hence, depends on the parity of the electron number in the island. We study these effects by analyzing the kinetics of the system. Since the interplay of Coulomb blockade and parity effects leads to a blocking of single electron tunneling, higher order tunneling processes become important. This is well-established for two-electron tunneling. Here we study processes of third and fourth order. We estimate the order of magnitude for these processes and discuss their relevance for recent experiments.

Resonant Tunneling and Charging Effects, a Path Integral Approach

Electron tunneling through small metallic islands with low capacitance is studied. The large charging energy in these systems is responsible for nonperturbative Coulomb blockade effects. We further consider the effect of electron interactions in the electrodes. In junctions with high resistance compared to the quantum resistance transport can be described by sequential tunneling. If the resistance is lower, quantum fluctuations, higher order coherent processes, and eventually resonant tunneling become important. We present a path integral real-time approach, which allows a systematic diagrammatic classification of these processes. An important process is ``inelastic resonant tunneling'', where different electrons tunnel coherently between the electrodes and the island. Physical quantities like the current and the average charge on the island can be deduced. We find a strong renormalization of the system parameters and, in addition, a finite lifetime broadening. It results in a pronounced broadening and smearing of the Coulomb oscillations of the conductance. These effects are important in an experimentally accessible range of temperatures. The electron interaction in the electrodes is modeled by a Luttinger liquid. It leads to non-analytic kernels in the effective action. The diagrammatic expansions can be performed also in this case, resulting in power-law current-voltage characteristics.

Proximity Effect and Charging in Mesoscopic Normal Metal - Superconductor Junction Systems

Charging effects in mesoscopic junctions suppress the tunneling of electrons. In normal metal - superconductor systems they also suppress the proximity effect, thereby revealing the nature of the microscopic processes and of the ground state of the system. The effect can be made visible since the charging and proximity effect and hence the transport properties of the system can be modulated by gate voltages. If the superconducting electrode is isolated, electron number parity effect lead to an even-odd asymmetry in the proximity effect.

Parity Effects on Electron Tunneling through Small Superconducting Islands

Single electron tunneling into small superconducting islands is sensitive to the gap energy of the excitations created in the process and, hence, depends on the electron number parity. At low temperature the properties of the system are 2e-periodic in the applied gate voltage, turning e-periodic at higher temperature. We evaluate the tunneling rates and determine the probabilities for the even and odd state as well as the cross-over condition from the balance between different processes. Our analysis includes excitations in the leads. They are essential if the leads are superconducting. The influence of parity effects on single electron tunneling, Cooper pair tunneling, and the Andreev reflection in superconducting transistors yields rich structures in the I-V characteristic, which explains recent experimental findings.
