$A_3$-formality for pro-2 Demushkin groups

We study a weak form of formality for differential graded algebras, called $A_3$-formality, and show that the differential graded $\mathbb{F}_2$-algebras of continuous cochains of all pro-$2$ Demushkin groups are $A_3$-formal. We prove this result by an explicit computation of the Benson--Krause--Schwede canonical class using the classification of pro-$2$ Demushkin groups by Demushkin, Serre, and Labute. Compared to the case of odd primes, the new idea is to interpret the data of the canonical class as defining systems of higher Massey products.

$A_3$-formality for Demushkin groups at odd primes

We study a weak form of formality for differential graded algebras, called $A_3$-formality, for the cohomology of pro-p Demushkin groups at odd primes p. We show that the differential graded $\mathbb{F}_p$-algebras of continuous cochains of Demushkin groups with q-invariant not equal 3 are $A_3$-formal, whereas Demushkin groups with q-invariant 3 are not $A_3$-formal. We prove these results by an explicit computation of the Benson-Krause-Schwede canonical class in Hochschild cohomology.

Non-realizability of a triple Massey product for the algebra $\mathbb{F}_2[a,b,c]/(ab,bc)$

We show that an often used example of a cohomology algebra with non-vanishing triple Massey product is intrinsically A_3-formal and therefore, in fact, cannot be realized as the cohomology of a differential graded algebra with non-vanishing triple Massey product. We prove this result by computing the graded Hochschild cohomology group which contains the potential obstruction to the vanishing.

Quasi-Boolean groups

We give several equivalent characterisations of the maximal pro-2 quotients of real projective groups. In particular, for pro-2 real projective groups we provide a presentation in terms of generators and relations, and a purely cohomological characterisation. As a consequence we explicitly reconstruct such groups from their mod 2 cohomology rings.

Geometric representation of cohomology classes for the Lie groups Spin(7) and Spin(8)

By constructing concrete complex-oriented maps we show that the eight-fold of the generator of the third integral cohomology of the spin groups Spin(7) and Spin(8) is in the image of the Thom morphism from complex cobordism to singular cohomology, while the generator itself is not in the image. We thereby give a geometric construction for a nontrivial class in the kernel of the differential Thom morphism of Hopkins and Singer for the Lie groups Spin(7) and Spin(8). The construction exploits the special symmetries of the octonions.

A note on the Thom morphism for the classifying space of certain Lie groups and gauge groups

We give a complete description of which non-torsion generators are not in the image of the Thom morphism from complex cobordism to integral cohomology for the classifying space of exceptional Lie groups except for E_8. We then show that the Thom morphism is not surjective for the classifying space of the gauge group of a principal E_7-bundle over the four-dimensional sphere. We use the results to detect nontrivial elements in the kernel of the reduced Thom morphism for Lie groups and their classifying spaces.

On the cokernel of the Thom morphism for compact Lie groups

We give a complete description of the potential failure of the surjectivity of the Thom morphism from complex cobordism to integral cohomology for compact Lie groups via a detailed study of the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence and the action of the Steenrod algebra. We show how the failure of the surjectivity of the topological Thom morphism can be used to find examples of non-trivial elements in the kernel of the induced differential Thom morphism from differential cobordism of Hopkins and Singer to differential cohomology. These arguments are based on the particular algebraic structure and interplay of the torsion and non-torsion parts of the cohomology and cobordism rings of a given compact Lie group. We then use the geometry of special orthogonal groups to construct concrete cobordism classes in the non-trivial part of the kernel of the differential Thom morphism.

Making the motivic group structure on the endomorphisms of the projective line explicit

We construct a group structure on the set of pointed naive homotopy classes of scheme morphisms from the Jouanolou device to the projective line. The group operation is defined via matrix multiplication on generating sections of line bundles and only requires basic algebraic geometry. In particular, it is completely independent of the construction of the motivic homotopy category. We show that a particular scheme morphism, which exhibits the Jouanolou device as an affine torsor bundle over the projective line, induces a monoid morphism from Cazanave's monoid to this group. Moreover, we show that this monoid morphism is a group completion to a subgroup of the group of scheme morphisms from the Jouanolou device to the projective line. This subgroup is generated by a set of morphisms that are simple to describe.

Geometric pushforward in Hodge filtered complex cobordism and secondary invariants

We construct a functorial pushforward homomorphism in geometric Hodge filtered complex cobordism along proper holomorphic maps between arbitrary complex manifolds. This significantly improves previous results on such transfer maps and is a much stronger result than the ones known for differential cobordism of smooth manifolds. This enables us to define and provide a concrete geometric description of Hodge filtered fundamental classes for all proper holomorphic maps. Moreover, we give a geometric description of a cobordism analog of the Abel-Jacobi invariant for nullbordant maps which is mapped to the classical invariant under the Hodge filtered Thom morphism. For the latter we provide a new construction in terms of geometric cycles.

Geometric Hodge filtered complex cobordism

We construct a geometric cycle model for a Hodge filtered extension of complex cobordism for every smooth manifold with a filtration on its de Rham complex with complex coefficients. Using a refinement of the Pontryagin-Thom construction, we construct an explicit isomorphism between our geometric model and the abstract model of Hodge filtered complex cobordism of Hopkins-Quick for every complex manifold with the Hodge filtration.

Real projective groups are formal

We prove that the mod 2-cohomology algebras of real projective groups are formal. As a consequence we derive the Hopkins-Wickelgren formality and the strong Massey vanishing conjecture for a large class of fields.

Representability of the local motivic Brouwer degree

We study which quadratic forms are representable as the local degree of a map $f : A^n \to A^n$ with an isolated zero at $0$, following the work of Kass and Wickelgren who established the connection to the quadratic form of Eisenbud, Khimshiashvili, and Levine. Our main observation is that over some base fields $k$, not all quadratic forms are representable as a local degree. Empirically the local degree of a map $f : A^n \to A^n$ has many hyperbolic summands, and we prove that in fact this is the case for local degrees of low rank. We establish a complete classification of the quadratic forms of rank at most $7$ that are representable as the local degree of a map over all base fields of characteristic different from $2$. The number of hyperbolic summands was also studied by Eisenbud and Levine, where they establish general bounds on the number of hyperbolic forms that must appear in a quadratic form that is representable as a local degree. Our proof method is elementary and constructive in the case of rank 5 local degrees, while the work of Eisenbud and Levine is more general. We provide further families of examples that verify that the bounds of Eisenbud and Levine are tight in several cases.

Examples of non-algebraic classes in the Brown-Peterson tower

For every $n\ge 0$, we construct classes in the Brown-Peterson cohomology $BP\langle n \rangle$ of smooth projective complex algebraic varieties which are not in the image of the cycle map from the corresponding motivic Brown-Peterson cohomology. This generalizes the examples of Atiyah and Hirzebruch to all finite levels in the Brown-Peterson tower.

Unstable splittings in Hodge filtered Brown-Peterson cohomology

We construct Hodge filtered function spaces associated to infinite loop spaces. For Brown-Peterson cohomology, we show that the corresponding Hodge filtered spaces satisfy an analog of Wilson's unstable splitting. As a consequence, we obtain an analog of Quillen's theorem for Hodge filtered Brown-Peterson cohomology for complex manifolds.

Verdier hypercovering theorem for motivic spectra

We prove a Verdier Hypercovering Theorem for cohomology theories arising from motivic spectra. This allows us to construct for smooth quasi-projective complex varieties a natural morphism from etale algebraic to Hodge filtered complex cobordism, which extends the map from etale motivic to Deligne-Beilinson cohomology.

An Abel-Jacobi invariant for cobordant cycles

We discuss an Abel-Jacobi invariant for algebraic cobordism cycles whose image in topological cobordism vanishes. The existence of this invariant follows by abstract arguments from the construction of Hodge filtered cohomology theories in joint work of Michael J. Hopkins and the author. In this paper, we give a concrete description of the new Abel-Jacobi map and Hodge filtered cohomology groups for projective smooth complex varieties.

Profinite and discrete G-spectra and iterated homotopy fixed points

For a profinite group $G$, let $(\text{-})^{hG}$, $(\text{-})^{h_dG}$, and $(\text{-})^{h'G}$ denote continuous homotopy fixed points for profinite $G$-spectra, discrete $G$-spectra, and continuous $G$-spectra (coming from towers of discrete $G$-spectra), respectively. We establish some connections between the first two notions, and by using Postnikov towers, for $K \vartriangleleft_c G$ (a closed normal subgroup), give various conditions for when the iterated homotopy fixed points $(X^{hK})^{hG/K}$ exist and are $X^{hG}$. For the Lubin-Tate spectrum $E_n$ and $G <_c G_n$, the extended Morava stabilizer group, our results show that $E_n^{hK}$ is a profinite $G/K$-spectrum with $(E_n^{hK})^{hG/K} \simeq E_n^{hG}$, by an argument that possesses a certain technical simplicity not enjoyed by either the proof that $(E_n^{h'K})^{h'G/K} \simeq E_n^{h'G}$ or the Devinatz-Hopkins proof (which requires $|G/K| < \infty$) of $(E_n^{dhK})^{h_dG/K} \simeq E_n^{dhG}$, where $E_n^{dhK}$ is a construction that behaves like continuous homotopy fixed points. Also, we prove that (in general) the $G/K$-homotopy fixed point spectral sequence for $\pi_\ast((E_n^{hK})^{hG/K})$, with $E_2^{s,t} = H^s_c(G/K; \pi_t(E_n^{hK}))$ (continuous cohomology), is isomorphic to both the strongly convergent Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence of Devinatz for $\pi_\ast(E_n^{dhG})$, with $E_2^{s,t} = H^s_c(G/K; \pi_t(E_n^{dhK}))$, and the descent spectral sequence for $\pi_\ast((E_n^{h'K})^{h'G/K})$.
