Nonstandard $n$-distances based on certain geometric constructions

The concept of $n$-distance was recently introduced to generalize the classical definition of distance to functions of $n$ arguments. In this paper we investigate this concept through a number of examples based on certain geometrical constructions. In particular, our study shows to which extent the computation of the best constant associated with an $n$-distance may sometimes be difficult and tricky. It also reveals that two important graph theoretical concepts, namely the total length of the Euclidean Steiner tree and the total length of the minimal spanning tree constructed on $n$ points, are instances of $n$-distances.

Tiling and weak tiling in $(\mathbb{Z}_p)^d$

We discuss the relation of tiling, weak tiling and spectral sets in finite abelian groups. In particular, in elementary $p$-groups $(\mathbb{Z}_p)^d$, we introduce an averaging procedure that leads to a natural object of study: a 4-tuple of functions which can be regarded as a common generalization of tiles and spectral sets. We characterize such 4-tuples for $d=1, 2$, and prove some partial results for $d=3$.

Sincov's and other functional equations and negative interest rates

Investigating the future value $F(K,s,t)$ of a capital $K$ invested at date $S$ at date $t$ the "natural" condition $F(K,s,t)\geq K$ has lost its naturality because of the strange fact of negative interest rates. This leads to the task of describing the possible solutions of the multiplicative Sincov equation $f(s,u)=f(s,t)f(t,u)$ for $s\leq t\leq u$, where $f(s,t)=0$ may happen. In this paper we solve this task and discuss connections to the theory of investments.

A dichotomy result for strictly increasing bisymmetric maps

In this paper we show some remarkable consequences of the method which proves that every bisymmetric, symmetric, reflexive, strictly monotonic binary map on a proper interval is continuous, in particular it is a quasi-arithmetic mean. Now we demonstrate that this result can be refined in the way that the symmetry condition can be weakened by assuming symmetry only for a pair of distinct points of an interval.

Optimal embedded and enclosing isosceles triangles

Given a triangle $Δ$, we study the problem of determining the smallest enclosing and largest embedded isosceles triangles of $Δ$ with respect to area and perimeter. This problem was initially posed by Nandakumar and was first studied by Kiss, Pach, and Somlai, who showed that if $Δ'$ is the smallest area isosceles triangle containing $Δ$, then $Δ'$ and $Δ$ share a side and an angle. In the present paper, we prove that for any triangle $Δ$, every maximum area isosceles triangle embedded in $Δ$ and every maximum perimeter isosceles triangle embedded in $Δ$ shares a side and an angle with $Δ$. Somewhat surprisingly, the case of minimum perimeter enclosing triangles is different: there are infinite families of triangles $Δ$ whose minimum perimeter isosceles containers do not share a side and an angle with $Δ$.

Isometric rigidity of Wasserstein spaces: the graph metric case

The aim of this paper is to prove that the $p$-Wasserstein space $\mathcal{W}_p(X)$ is isometrically rigid for all $p\geq 1$ whenever $X$ is a countable graph metric space. As a consequence, we obtain that for every countable group $H$ and any $p\geq 1$ there exists a $p$-Wasserstein space whose isometry group is isomorphic to $H$.

Translation invariant linear spaces of polynomials

A set of polynomials $M$ is called a {\it submodule} of $\mathbb{C} [x_1, \dots, x_n ]$ if $M$ is a translation invariant linear subspace of $\mathbb{C} [x_1, \dots, x_n ]$. We present a description of the submodules of $\mathbb{C} [x,y]$ in terms of a special type of submodules. We say that the submodule $M$ of $\mathbb{C} [x,y]$ is an {\it L-module of order} $s$ if, whenever $F(x,y)=\sum_{n=0}^N f_n (x) \cdot y^n \in M$ is such that $f_0 =\ldots = f_{s-1}=0$, then $F=0$. We show that the proper submodules of $\mathbb{C} [x,y]$ are the sums $M_d +M$, where $M_d =\{ F\in \mathbb{C} [x,y] \colon \textit{deg}_x F <d\}$, and $M$ is an L-module. We give a construction of L-modules parametrized by sequences of complex numbers. A submodule $M\subseteq \mathbb{C} [x_1, \dots, x_n ]$ is {\it decomposable} if it is the sum of finitely many proper submodules of $M$. Otherwise $M$ is {\it indecomposable}. It is easy to see that every submodule of $\mathbb{C} [x_1, \dots, x_n]$ is the sum of finitely many indecomposable submodules. In $\mathbb{C} [x,y]$ every indecomposable submodule is either an L-module or equals $M_d$ for some $d$. In the other direction we show that $M_d$ is indecomposable for every $d$, and so is every L-module of order $1$. Finally, we prove that there exists a submodule of $\mathbb{C} [x,y]$ (in fact, an L-module of order $1$) which is not relatively closed in $\mathbb{C} [x,y]$. This answers a problem posed by L. Székelyhidi in 2011.

Characterization of quasi-arithmetic means without regularity condition

In this paper we show that bisymmetry, which is an algebraic property, has a regularity improving feature. More precisely, we prove that every bisymmetric, partially strictly monotonic, reflexive and symmetric function $F:I^2\to I$ is continuous. As a consequence, we obtain a finer characterization of quasi-arithmetic means than the classical results of Aczél, Kolmogoroff, Nagumo and de Finetti.

Separately polynomial functions

It is known that if $f\colon {\mathbb R}^2 \to {\mathbb R}$ is a polynomial in each variable, then $f$ is a polynomial. We present generalizations of this fact, when ${\mathbb R}^2$ is replaced by $G\times H$, where $G$ and $H$ are topological Abelian groups. We show, e.g., that the conclusion holds (with generalized polynomials in place of polynomials) if $G$ is a connected Baire space and $H$ has a dense subgroup of finite rank or, for continuous functions, if $G$ and $H$ are connected Baire spaces. The condition of continuity can be omitted if $G$ and $H$ are locally compact or complete metric spaces. We present several examples showing that the results are not far from being optimal.

Fuglede's conjecture holds for cyclic groups of order $pqrs$

The tile-spectral direction of the discrete Fuglede-conjecture is well-known for cyclic groups of square-free order, initiated by Laba and Meyerowitz, but the spectral-tile direction is far from being well-understood. The product of at most three primes as the order of the cyclic group was studied intensely in the last couple of years. In this paper we study the case when the order of the cyclic group is the product of four different primes and prove that Fuglede's conjecture holds in this case.

Fuglede's conjecture holds on $\mathbb{Z}_p^2 \times \mathbb{Z}_q$

The study of Fuglede's conjecture on the direct product of elementary abelian groups was initiated by Iosevich et al. For the product of two elementary abelian groups the conjecture holds. For $\mathbb{Z}_p^3$ the problem is still open if $p\ge 11$. In connection we prove that Fuglede's conjecture holds on $\mathbb{Z}_{p}^2\times \mathbb{Z}_q$ by developing a method based on ideas from discrete geometry.

Minimum area isosceles containers

We show that every minimum area isosceles triangle containing a given triangle $T$ shares a side and an angle with $T$. This proves a conjecture of Nandakumar motivated by a computational problem. We use our result to deduce that for every triangle $T$, (1) there are at most $3$ minimum area isosceles triangles that contain $T$, and (2) there exists an isosceles triangle containing $T$ whose area is smaller than $\sqrt2$ times the area of $T$. Both bounds are best possible.

On the best constants associated with $n$-distances

We pursue the investigation of the concept of $n$-distance, an $n$-variable version of the classical concept of distance recently introduced and investigated by Kiss, Marichal, and Teheux. We especially focus on the challenging problem of computing the best constant associated with a given $n$-distance. In particular, we define and investigate the best constants related to partial simplex inequalities. We also introduce and discuss some subclasses of $n$-distances defined by considering some properties. Finally, we discuss an interesting link between the concepts of $n$-distance and multidistance.

Remarks on the notion of homo-derivations

The purpose of this paper is to study the (different) notions of homo-derivations. These are additive mappings $f$ of a ring $R$ that also fulfill the identity \[ f(xy)=f(x)y+xf(y)+f(x)f(y) \qquad \left(x, y\in R\right), \] or (in case of the other notion) the system of equations \[ f(xy)=f(x)f(y)\] \[f(xy)=f(x)y+xf(y) \qquad \left(x, y\in R\right).\] Our primary aim is to investigate the above equations without additivity as well as the following Pexiderized equation \[ f(xy)=h(x)h(y)+xk(y)+k(x)y. \] The obtained results show that under rather mild assumptions homo-derivations can be fully characterized, even without the additivity assumption.

On the discrete Fuglede and Pompeiu problems

We investigate the discrete Fuglede's conjecture and Pompeiu problem on finite abelian groups and develop a strong connection between the two problems. We give a geometric condition under which a multiset of a finite abelian group has the discrete Pompeiu property. Using this description and the revealed connection we prove that Fuglede's conjecture holds for $\mathbb{Z}_{p^n q^2}$, where $p$ and $q$ are different primes. In particular, we show that every spectral subset of $\mathbb{Z}_{p^n q^2}$ tiles the group. Further, using our combinatorial methods we give a simple proof for the statement that Fuglede's conjecture holds for $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$.

On a class of linear functional equations without range condition

The main purpose of this work is to provide the general solutions of a class of linear functional equations. Let $n\geq 2$ be an arbitrarily fixed integer, let further $X$ and $Y$ be linear spaces over the field $\mathbb{K}$ and let $α_{i}, β_{i}\in \mathbb{K}$, $i=1, \ldots, n$ be arbitrarily fixed constants. We will describe all those functions $f, f_{i, j}\colon X\times Y\to \mathbb{K}$, $i, j=1, \ldots, n$ that fulfill functional equation \[ f\left(\sum_{i=1}^n α_i x_i, \sum_{i=1}^n β_i y_i\right)= \sum_{i, j=1}^{n}f_{i, j}(x_i, y_j) \qquad \left(x_i \in X, y_i \in Y, i=1, \ldots, n\right). \] Additionally, necessary and sufficient conditions will also be given that guarantee the solutions to be non-trivial.
