Extensions of integral orthoregular sets and icubes

In this paper, we study the question when a (rational or Gaussian) integral vector can be extended to an integral orthogonal basis consisting of vectors of equal length. We also study when a set of integral vectors has such an extension. Some necessary conditions are given which are proven to be sufficient in dimensions $3$ and $4$.

Finiteness properties of generalized Montréal functors with applications to mod $p$ representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{Q}_p)$

The second named author previously constructed a functor $\mathbb{V}^\vee\circ D^\vee_Δ$ from the category of smooth $p$-power torsion representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ to the category of inductive limits of continuous representations on finite $p$-primary abelian groups of the direct product $G_{\mathbb{Q}_p,Δ}\times \mathbb{Q}_p^\times$ of $(n-1)$ copies of the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ and one copy of the multiplicative group $\mathbb{Q}_p^\times$. In the present work we show that this functor attaches finite dimensional representations on the Galois side to smooth $p$-power torsion representations of finite length on the automorphic side. This has some implications on the finiteness properties of Breuil's functor, too. Moreover, $\mathbb{V}^\vee\circ D^\vee_Δ$ produces irreducible representations of $G_{\mathbb{Q}_p,Δ}\times \mathbb{Q}_p^\times$ when applied to irreducible objects on the automorphic side and detects isomorphisms unless it vanishes. Further, we determine the kernel of $D^\vee_Δ$ when restricted to successive extensions of subquotients of principal series. We use this to characterize representations that are parabolically induced from the product of a torus and $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$. Finally, we formulate a conjecture and prove partial results on the essential image.

Matrix Kloosterman sums modulo prime powers

We give optimal bounds for matrix Kloosterman sums modulo prime powers extending earlier work of the first two authors on the case of prime moduli. These exponential sums arise in the theory of the horocyclic flow on $\mathrm{GL}_n$.

The sup-norm problem for automorphic cusp forms of $\mathrm{PGL}(n,\mathbb{Z}[i])$

Let $ϕ$ be an $L^2$-normalized Hecke--Maaß cusp form for $\mathrm{PGL}_n(\mathbb{Z}[i])$ on the locally symmetric space $X:=\mathrm{PGL}_n(\mathbb{Z}[i])\backslash \mathrm{PGL}_n(\mathbb{C}) / \mathrm{PU}_n$. If $Ω$ is a compact subset of $X$, then we prove the bound $\|ϕ|_Ω\|_{\infty}\ll_Ω λ_ϕ^{n(n-1)/4-δ}$ for some $δ>0$ depending only on $n$, where $λ_ϕ$ is the Laplace eigenvalue of $ϕ$.

Explicit isomorphisms of quaternion algebras over quadratic global fields

Let $L$ be a separable quadratic extension of either $\mathbb{Q}$ or $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. We propose efficient algorithms for finding isomorphisms between quaternion algebras over $L$. Our techniques are based on computing maximal one-sided ideals of the corestriction of a central simple $L$-algebra.

Finding nontrivial zeros of quadratic forms over rational function fields of characteristic 2

We propose polynomial-time algorithms for finding nontrivial zeros of quadratic forms with four variables over rational function fields of characteristic 2. We apply these results to find prescribed quadratic subfields of quaternion division division algebras and zero divisors in $M_2(D)$, the full matrix algebra over a division algebra, given by structure constants. We also provide an implementation of our results in MAGMA which shows that the algorithms are truly practical.

Multivariable $(φ,Γ)$-modules and Representations of Products of Galois Groups: The Case of Imperfect Residue Field

Let $K$ be a complete discretely valued field with mixed characteristic $(0, p)$ and imperfect residue field $k_K$. Let $Δ$ be a finite set. We construct an equivalence of categories between finite dimensional $\Bbb{F}_p$-representations of the product of $Δ$ copies of the absolute Galois group of $K$ and multivariable \' etale $(φ, Γ)$-modules over a multivariable Laurent series ring over $k_K$.

Drinfeld's lemma for perfectoid spaces and overconvergence of multivariate $(φ, Γ)$-modules

Let $p$ be a prime, let $K$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, and let $n$ be a positive integer. We construct equivalences of categories between continuous $p$-adic representations of the $n$-fold product of the absolute Galois group $G_K$ and $(φ, Γ)$-modules over one of several rings of $n$-variable power series. The case $n=1$ recovers the original construction of Fontaine and the subsequent refinement by Cherbonnier--Colmez; for general $n$, the case $K = \mathbb{Q}_p$ had been previously treated by the third author. To handle general $K$ uniformly, we use a form of Drinfeld's lemma on profinite fundamental groups of products of spaces in characteristic $p$, but for perfectoid spaces instead of schemes. We also construct the multivariate analogue of the Herr complex to compute Galois cohomology; the case $K = \mathbb{Q}_p$ had been previously treated by Pal and the third author, and we reduce to this case using a form of Shapiro's lemma.

On Kuznetsov-Bykovskii's formula of counting prime geodesics

We generalize a formula on the counting of prime geodesics, due to Kuznetsov-Bykovskii, used in the work of Soundararajan-Young on the prime geodesic theorem. The method works over any number field and for any congruence subgroup. We give explicit computation in the cases of principal and Hecke subgroups.

Cohomology and overconvergence for representations of powers of Galois groups

We show that the Galois cohomology groups of $p$-adic representations of a direct power of $\operatorname{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}_p}/\mathbb{Q}_p)$ can be computed via the generalization of Herr's complex to multivariable $(φ,Γ)$-modules. Using Tate duality and a pairing for multivariable $(φ,Γ)$-modules we extend this to analogues of the Iwasawa cohomology. We show that all $p$-adic representations of a direct power of $\operatorname{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}_p}/\mathbb{Q}_p)$ are overconvergent and, moreover, passing to overconvergent multivariable $(φ,Γ)$-modules is an equivalence of categories. Finally, we prove that the overconvergent Herr complex also computes the Galois cohomology groups.

Estimating the greatest common divisor of the value of two polynomials

Let $p$ be a fixed prime, and let $v(a)$ stand for the exponent of $p$ in the prime factorization of the integer $a$. Let $f$ and $g$ be two monic polynomials with integer coefficients and nonzero resultant $r$. Write $S$ for the maximum of $v(\gcd (f(n), g(n)))$ over all integers $n$. It is known that $S \le v(r)$. We give various lower and upper bounds for the least possible value of $v(r)-S$ provided that a given power $p^s$ divides both $f(n)$ and $g(n)$ for all $n$. In particular, the least possible value is $ps^2-s$ for $s\le p$ and is asymptotically $(p-1)s^2$ for large $s$.

Multivariable (ϕ,Γ)-modules and products of Galois groups

We show that the category of continuous representations of the $d$th direct power of the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ on finite dimensional $\mathbb{F}_p$-vector spaces (resp. finitely generated $\mathbb{Z}_p$-modules, resp. finite dimensional $\mathbb{Q}_p$-vector spaces) is equivalent to the category of étale $(φ,Γ)$-modules over a $d$-variable Laurent-series ring over $\mathbb{F}_p$ (resp. over $\mathbb{Z}_p$, resp. over $\mathbb{Q}_p$).

Multivariable $(φ,Γ)$-modules and smooth $o$-torsion representations

Let $G$ be a $\mathbb{Q}_p$-split reductive group with connected centre and Borel subgroup $B=TN$. We construct a right exact functor $D^\vee_Δ$ from the category of smooth modulo $p^n$ representations of $B$ to the category of projective limits of finitely generated étale $(φ,Γ)$-modules over a multivariable (indexed by the set of simple roots) commutative Laurent-series ring. These correspond to representations of a direct power of $\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}_p}/\mathbb{Q}_p)$ via an equivalence of categories. Parabolic induction from a subgroup $P=L_PN_P$ corresponds to a basechange from a Laurent-series ring in those variables with corresponding simple roots contained in the Levi component $L_P$. $D^\vee_Δ$ is exact and yields finitely generated objects on the category $SP_A$ of finite length representations with subquotients of principal series as Jordan-Hölder factors. Lifting the functor $D^\vee_Δ$ to all (noncommuting) variables indexed by the positive roots allows us to construct a $G$-equivariant sheaf $\mathfrak{Y}_{π,Δ}$ on $G/B$ and a $G$-equivariant continuous map from the Pontryagin dual $π^\vee$ of a smooth representation $π$ of $G$ to the global sections $\mathfrak{Y}_{π,Δ}(G/B)$. We deduce that $D^\vee_Δ$ is fully faithful on the full subcategory of $SP_A$ with Jordan-Hölder factors isomorphic to irreducible principal series.

Links between generalized Montréal-functors

Let $o$ be the ring of integers in a finite extension $K/\mathbb{Q}_p$ and $G=\mathbf{G}(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ be the $\mathbb{Q}_p$-points of a $\mathbb{Q}_p$-split reductive group $\mathbf{G}$ defined over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ with connected centre and split Borel $\mathbf{B}=\mathbf{TN}$. We show that Breuil's pseudocompact $(φ,Γ)$-module $D^\vee_ξ(π)$ attached to a smooth $o$-torsion representation $π$ of $B=\mathbf{B}(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ is isomorphic to the pseudocompact completion of the basechange $\mathcal{O_E}\otimes_{Λ(N_0),\ell}\widetilde{D_{SV}}(π)$ to Fontaine's ring (via a Whittaker functional $\ell\colon N_0=\mathbf{N}(\mathbb{Z}_p)\to \mathbb{Z}_p$) of the étale hull $\widetilde{D_{SV}}(π)$ of $D_{SV}(π)$ defined by Schneider and Vigneras. Moreover, we construct a $G$-equivariant map from the Pontryagin dual $π^\vee$ to the global sections $\mathfrak{Y}(G/B)$ of the $G$-equivariant sheaf $\mathfrak{Y}$ on $G/B$ attached to a noncommutative multivariable version $D^\vee_{ξ,\ell,\infty}(π)$ of Breuil's $D^\vee_ξ(π)$ whenever $π$ comes as the restriction to $B$ of a smooth, admissible representation of $G$ of finite length.

On twists of modules over non-commutative Iwasawa algebras

It is well known that, for any finitely generated torsion module M over the Iwasawa algebra Z_p [[Γ ]], where Γ is isomorphic to Z_p, there exists a continuous p-adic character ρ of Γ such that, for every open subgroup U of Γ, the group of U-coinvariants M(ρ)_U is finite; here M( ρ) denotes the twist of M by ρ. This twisting lemma was already applied to study various arithmetic properties of Selmer groups and Galois cohomologies over a cyclotomic tower by Greenberg and Perrin-Riou. We prove a non commutative generalization of this twisting lemma replacing torsion modules over Z_p [[ Γ ]] by certain torsion modules over Z_p [[G]] with more general p-adic Lie group G.

Algebraic functional equations and completely faithful Selmer groups

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve---defined over a number field $K$---without complex multiplication and with good ordinary reduction at all the primes above a rational prime $p \geq 5$. We construct a pairing on the dual $p^\infty$-Selmer group of $E$ over any strongly admissible $p$-adic Lie extension $K_\infty/K$ under the assumption that it is a torsion module over the Iwasawa algebra of the Galois group $G=\operatorname{Gal}(K_\infty/K)$. Under some mild additional hypotheses this gives an algebraic functional equation of the conjectured $p$-adic L-function. As an application we construct completely faithful Selmer groups in case the $p$-adic Lie extension is obtained by adjoining the $p$-power division points of another non-CM elliptic curve $A$.

(ϕ,Γ)-modules over noncommutative overconvergent and Robba rings

We construct noncommutative multidimensional versions of overconvergent power series rings and Robba rings. We show that the category of étale $(φ,Γ)$-modules over certain completions of these rings are equivalent to the category of étale $(φ,Γ)$-modules over the corresponding classical overconvergent, resp. Robba rings (hence also to the category of $p$-adic Galois representations of $\mathbb{Q}_p$). Moreover, in the case of Robba rings, the assumption of étaleness is not necessary, so there exists a notion of trianguline objects in this sense.
