Statistically interacting vacancy particles

The equilibrium statistical mechanics of one-dimensional lattice gases with interactions of arbitrary range and shape between first-neighbor atoms is solved exactly on the basis of statistically interacting vacancy particles. Two sets of vacancy particles are considered. In one set all vacancies are of one-cell size. In the other set the sizes of vacancy particles match the separation between atoms. Explicit expressions are obtained for the Gibbs free energy and the distribution of spaces between atoms at thermal equilibrium. Applications to various types of interaction potentials are discussed, including long-range potentials that give rise to phase transitions. Extensions to hard rod systems are straightforward and are shown to agree with existing results for lattice models and their continuum limits.

Jammed disks in narrow channel: criticality and ordering tendencies

A system of identical disks is confined to a narrow channel, closed off at one end by a stopper and at the other end by a piston. All surfaces are hard and frictionless. A uniform gravitational field is directed parallel to the plane of the disks and perpendicular to the axis of the channel. We employ a method of configurational statistics that interprets jammed states as configurations of floating particles with structure. The particles interlink according to set rules. The two jammed microstates with smallest volume act as pseudo-vacuum. The placement of particles is subject to a generalized Pauli principle. Jammed macrostates are generated by random agitations and specified by two control variables. One is a measure of the intensity of random agitations at given pressure. The other is a measure of the change in gravitational potential energy in units of compression work when one particle is excited. In this two-dimensional space of variables there exists a critical point. The jammed macrostate realized at the critical point depends on the path of approach. We describe all jammed macrostates by volume and entropy. Both are functions of the average population densities of particles. Approaching the critical point in an extended space of control variables generates two types of jammed macrostates: states with random heterogeneities in mass density and states with domains of uniform mass density.

Generalized Pauli principle for particles with distinguishable traits

The s=3/2 Ising spin chain with uniform nearest-neighbor coupling, quadratic single-site potential, and magnetic field is shown to be equivalent to a system of 17 species of particles with internal structure. The same set of particles (with different energies) is shown to generate the spectrum of the s=1/2 Ising chain with dimerized nearest-neighbor coupling. The particles are free of interaction energies even at high densities. The mutual exclusion statistics of particles from all species is determined by their internal structure and encoded in a generalized Pauli principle. The exact statistical mechanical analysis can be performed for thermodynamically open or closed systems and with arbitrary energies assigned to all particle species. Special circumstances make it possible to merge two or more species into a single species. All traits that distinguish the original species become ignorable. The particles from the merged species are effectively indistinguishable and obey modified exclusion statistics. Different mergers may yield the same endproduct, implying that the inverse process (splitting any species into subspecies) is not unique. In a macroscopic system of two merged species at thermal equilibrium, the concentrations of the original species satisfy a functional relation governed by their mutual statistical interaction. That relation is derivable from an extremum principle. In the Ising context the system is open and the particle energies depend on the Hamiltonian parameters. Simple models of polymerization and solitonic paramagnetism each represent a closed system of two species that can transform into each other. Here they represent distinguishable traits with different energies of the same physical particle.

Taxonomy of particles in Ising spin chains

The statistical mechanics of particles with shapes on a one-dimensional lattice is investigated in the context of the $s=1$ Ising chain with uniform nearest-neighbor coupling, quadratic single-site potential, and magnetic field, which supports four distinct ground states: $|\uparrow\downarrow\uparrow\downarrow...>$, $|\circ\circ...>$, $|\uparrow\uparrow...>$, $|\uparrow\circ\uparrow\circ...>$. The complete spectrum is generated from each ground state by particles from a different set of six or seven species. Particles and elements of pseudo-vacuum are characterized by motifs (patterns of several consecutive site variables). Particles are floating objects that can be placed into open slots on the lattice. Open slots are recognized as permissible links between motifs. The energy of a particle varies between species but is independent of where it is placed. Placement of one particle changes the open-slot configuration for particles of all species. This statistical interaction is encoded in a generalized Pauli principle, from which the multiplicity of states for a given particle combination is determined and used for the exact statistical mechanical analysis. Particles from all species belong to one of four categories: compacts, hosts, tags, or hybrids. Compacts and hosts find open slots in segments of pseudo-vacuum. Tags find open slots inside hosts. Hybrids are tags with hosting capability. In the taxonomy of particles proposed here, `species' is indicative of structure and `category' indicative of function. The hosting function splits the Pauli principle into exclusion and accommodation parts. Near phase boundaries, the state of the Ising chain at low temperature is akin to that of miscible or immiscible liquids with particles from one species acting as surfactant molecules.

Quasiparticles in the XXZ model

The coordinate Bethe ansatz solutions of the XXZ model for a one-dimensional spin-1/2 chain are analyzed with focus on the statistical properties of the constituent quasiparticles. Emphasis is given to the special cases known as XX, XXX, and Ising models, where considerable simplifications occur. The XXZ spectrum can be generated from separate pseudovacua as configurations of sets of quasiparticles with different exclusion statistics. These sets are complementary in the sense that the pseudovacuum of one set contains the maximum number of particles from the other set. The Bethe ansatz string solutions of the XXX model evolve differently in the planar and axial regimes. In the Ising limit they become ferromagnetic domains with integer-valued exclusion statistics. In the XX limit they brake apart into hard-core bosons with (effectively) fermionic statistics. Two sets of quasiparticles with spin 1/2 and fractional statistics are distinguished, where one set (spinons) generates the XXZ spectrum from the unique, critical ground state realized in the planar regime, and the other set (solitons) generates the same spectrum from the twofold, antiferromagnetically ordered ground state realized in the axial regime. In the Ising limit, the solitons become antiferromagnetic domain walls.

Quantum integrability and nonintegrability in the spin-boson model

We study the spectral properties of a spin-boson Hamiltonian that depends on two continuous parameters $0\leqΛ<\infty$ (interaction strength) and $0\leqα\leqπ/2$ (integrability switch). In the classical limit this system has two distinct integrable regimes, $α=0$ and $α=π/2$. For each integrable regime we can express the quantum Hamiltonian as a function of two action operators. Their eigenvalues (multiples of $\hbar$) are the natural quantum numbers for the complete level spectrum. This functional dependence cannot be extended into the nonintegrable regime $(0<α<π/2)$. Here level crossings are prohibited and the level spectrum is naturally described by a single (energy sorting) quantum number. In consequence, the tracking of individual eigenstates along closed paths through both regimes leads to conflicting assignments of quantum numbers. This effect is a useful and reliable indicator of quantum chaos -- a diagnostic tool that is independent of any level-statistical analysis.

Interaction and thermodynamics of spinons in the XX chain

The mapping between the fermion and spinon compositions of eigenstates in the one-dimensional spin-1/2 XX model on a lattice with N sites is used to describe the spinon interaction from two different perspectives: (i) For finite N the energy of all eigenstates is expressed as a function of spinon momenta and spinon spins, which, in turn, are solutions of a set of Bethe ansatz equations. The latter are the basis of an exact thermodynamic analysis in the spinon representation of the XX model. (ii) For N -> infinity the energy per site of spinon configurations involving any number of spinon orbitals is expressed as a function of reduced variables representing momentum, filling, and magnetization of each orbital. The spins of spinons in a single orbital are found to be coupled in a manner well described by an Ising-like equivalent-neighbor interaction, switching from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic as the filling exceeds a critical level. Comparisons are made with results for the Haldane-Shastry model.

Statistically interacting quasiparticles in Ising chains

The exclusion statistics of two complementary sets of quasiparticles, generated from opposite ends of the spectrum, are identified for Ising chains with spin s=1/2,1. In the s=1/2 case the two sets are antiferromagnetic domain walls (solitons) and ferromagnetic domains (strings). In the s=1 case they are soliton pairs and nested strings, respectively. The Ising model is equivalent to a system of two species of solitons for s=1/2 and to a system of six species of soliton pairs for s=1. Solitons exist on single bonds but soliton pairs may be spread across many bonds. The thermodynamics of a system of domains spanning up to $M$ lattice sites is amenable to exact analysis and shown to become equivalent, in the limit M -> infinity, to the thermodynamics of the s=1/2 Ising chain. A relation is presented between the solitons in the Ising limit and the spinons in the XX limit of the s=1/2 XXZ chain.

Thermodynamics of ideal quantum gas with fractional statistics in D dimensions

We present exact and explicit results for the thermodynamic properties (isochores, isotherms, isobars, response functions, velocity of sound) of a quantum gas in dimensions D>=1 and with fractional exclusion statistics 0<=g<=1 connecting bosons (g=0) and fermions (g=1). In D=1 the results are equivalent to those of the Calogero-Sutherland model. Emphasis is given to the crossover between boson-like and fermion-like features, caused by aspects of the statistical interaction that mimic long-range attraction and short-range repulsion. The full isochoric heat capacity and the leading low-T term of the isobaric expansivity in D=2 are independent of g. The onset of Bose-Einstein condensation along the isobar occurs at a nonzero transition temperature in all dimensions. The T-dependence of the velocity of sound is in simple relation to isochores and isobars. The effects of soft container walls are accounted for rigorously for the case of a pure power-law potential.

Spinon excitations in the XX chain: spectra, transition rates, observability

The exact one-to-one mapping between (spinless) Jordan-Wigner lattice fermions and (spin-1/2) spinons is established for all eigenstates of the one-dimensional s = 1=2 XX model on a lattice with an even or odd number N of lattice sites and periodic boundary conditions. Exact product formulas for the transition rates derived via Bethe ansatz are used to calculate asymptotic expressions of the 2-spinon and 4-spinon parts (for large even N) as well as of the 1-spinon and 3-spinon parts (for large odd N) of the dynamic spin structure factors. The observability of these spectral contributions is assessed for finite and infinite N.

Spectrum and transition rates of the XX chain analyzed via Bethe ansatz

As part of a study that investigates the dynamics of the s=1/2 XXZ model in the planar regime |Delta|<1, we discuss the singular nature of the Bethe ansatz equations for the case Delta=0 (XX model). We identify the general structure of the Bethe ansatz solutions for the entire XX spectrum, which include states with real and complex magnon momenta. We discuss the relation between the spinon or magnon quasiparticles (Bethe ansatz) and the lattice fermions (Jordan-Wigner representation). We present determinantal expressions for transition rates of spin fluctuation operators between Bethe wave functions and reduce them to product expressions. We apply the new formulas to two-spinon transition rates for chains with up to N=4096 sites.

Transition rates via Bethe ansatz for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain

We use the exact determinantal representation derived by Kitanine, Maillet, and Terras for matrix elements of local spin operators between Bethe wave functions of the one-dimensional s=1/2 Heisenberg model to calculate and numerically evaluate transition rates pertaining to dynamic spin structure factors. For real solutions z_1,...,z_r of the Bethe ansatz equations, the size of the determinants is of order r x r. We present applications to the zero-temperature spin fluctuations parallel and perpendicular to an external magnetic field.

Quasiparticles governing the zero-temperature dynamics of the 1D spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a magnetic field

The T=0 dynamical properties of the one-dimensional (1D) $s=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a uniform magnetic field are studied via Bethe ansatz for cyclic chains of $N$ sites. The ground state at magnetization $0<M_z<N/2$, which can be interpreted as a state with $2M_z$ spinons or as a state of $M_z$ magnons, is reconfigured here as the vacuum for a different species of quasiparticles, the {\em psinons} and {\em antipsinons}. We investigate three kinds of quantum fluctuations, namely the spin fluctuations parallel and perpendicular to the direction of the applied magnetic field and the dimer fluctuations. The dynamically dominant excitation spectra are found to be sets of collective excitations composed of two quasiparticles excited from the psinon vacuum in different configurations. The Bethe ansatz provides a framework for (i) the characterization of the new quasiparticles in relation to the more familiar spinons and magnons, (ii) the calculation of spectral boundaries and densities of states for each continuum, (iii) the calculation of transition rates between the ground state and the dynamically dominant collective excitations, (iv) the prediction of lineshapes for dynamic structure factors relevant for experiments performed on a variety of quasi-1D antiferromagnetic compounds, including KCuF$_3$, Cu(C$_4$H$_4$N$_2)(NO_3)_2$, and CuGeO$_3$.

Introduction to the Bethe Ansatz III

Having introduced the magnon in part I and the spinon in part II as the relevant quasi-particles for the interpretation of the spectrum of low-lying excitations in the one-dimensional (1D) s=1/2 Heisenberg ferromagnet and antiferromagnet, respectively, we now study the low-lying excitations of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a magnetic field and interpret these collective states as composites of quasi-particles from a different species. We employ the Bethe ansatz to calculate matrix elements and show how the results of such a calculation can be used to predict lineshapes for neutron scattering experiments on quasi-1D antiferromagnetic compounds. The paper is designed as a tutorial for beginning graduate students. It includes 11 problems for further study.

Lineshape predictions via Bethe ansatz for the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a magnetic field

The spin fluctuations parallel to the external magnetic field in the ground state of the one-dimensional (1D) s=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet are dominated by a two-parameter set of collective excitations. In a cyclic chain of N sites and magnetization 0 \infty, these collective excitations form a continuum in (q,ω)-space with an incommensurate soft mode. Their matrix elements in the dynamic spin structure factor S_{zz}(q,ω) are calculated directly from the Bethe wave functions for finite N. The resulting lineshape predictions for N -> \infty complement the exact results previously derived via algebraic analysis for the exact 2-spinon part of S_{zz}(q,ω) in the zero-field limit. They are directly relevant for the interpretation of neutron scattering data measured in nonzero field on quasi-1D antiferromagnetic compounds.

Integrability and action operators in quantum Hamiltonian systems

For a (classically) integrable quantum mechanical system with two degrees of freedom, the functional dependence $\hat{H}=H_Q(\hat{J}_1,\hat{J}_2)$ of the Hamiltonian operator on the action operators is analyzed and compared with the corresponding functional relationship $H(p_1,q_1;p_2,q_2) = H_C(J_1,J_2)$ in the classical limit of that system. The former is shown to converge toward the latter in some asymptotic regime associated with the classical limit, but the convergence is, in general, non-uniform. The existence of the function $\hat{H}=H_Q(\hat{J}_1,\hat{J}_2)$ in the integrable regime of a parametric quantum system explains empirical results for the dimensionality of manifolds in parameter space on which at least two levels are degenerate. The comparative analysis is carried out for an integrable one-parameter two-spin model. Additional results presented for the (integrable) circular billiard model illuminate the same conclusions from a different angle.

Computational probes of collective excitations in low-dimensional magnetism

The investigation of the dynamics of quantum many-body systems is a concerted effort involving computational studies of mathematical models and experimental studies of material samples. Some commonalities of the two tracks of investigation are discussed in the context of the quantum spin dynamics of low-dimensional magnetic systems, in particular spin chains. The study of quantum fluctuations in such systems at equilibrium amounts to exploring the spectrum of collective excitations and the rate at which they are excited from the ground state by dynamical variables of interest. The exact results obtained via Bethe ansatz or algebraic analysis (quantum groups) for a select class of completely integrable models can be used as benchmarks for numerical studies of nonintegrable models, for which computational access to the spectrum of collective excitations is limited.

Signatures of quantum integrability and nonintegrability in the spectral properties of finite Hamiltonian matrices

For a two-spin model which is (classically) integrable on a five-dimensional hypersurface in six-dimensional parameter space and for which level degeneracies occur exclusively (with one known exception) on four-dimensional manifolds embedded in the integrability hypersurface, we investigate the relations between symmetry, integrability, and the assignment of quantum numbers to eigenstates. We calculate quantum invariants in the form of expectation values for selected operators and monitor their dependence on the Hamiltonian parameters along loops within, without, and across the integrability hypersurface in parameter space. We find clear-cut signatures of integrability and nonintegrability in the observed traces of quantum invariants evaluated in finite-dimensional invariant Hilbert subspaces, The results support the notion that quantum integrability depends on the existence of action operators as constituent elements of the Hamiltonian.
