Galactic dynamics in MOND -- Existence of equilibria with finite mass and compact support

We consider a self-gravitating collisionless gas where the gravitational interaction is modeled according to MOND (modified Newtonian dynamics). For the resulting modified Vlasov-Poisson system we establish the existence of spherically symmetric equilibria with compact support and finite mass. In the standard situation where gravity is modeled by Newton's law the latter properties only hold under suitable restrictions on the prescribed microscopic equation of state. Under the MOND regime no such restrictions are needed.

Rotating, stationary, axially symmetric spacetimes with collisionless matter

The existence of stationary solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov system which are axially symmetric and have non-zero total angular momentum is shown. This provides mathematical models for rotating, general relativistic and asymptotically flat non-vacuum spacetimes. If angular momentum is allowed to be non-zero, the system of equations to solve contains one semilinear elliptic equation which is singular on the axis of rotation. This can be handled very efficiently by recasting the equation as one for an axisymmetric unknown on $\R^5$.

Stability for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system - a coercivity estimate

The stability of static solutions of the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat Einstein-Vlasov system is studied using a Hamiltonian approach based on energy-Casimir functionals. The main result is a coercivity estimate for the quadratic part of the expansion of the natural energy-Casimir functional about an isotropic steady state. The estimate shows in a quantified way that this quadratic part is positive definite on a class of linearly dynamically accessible perturbations, provided the particle distribution of the steady state is a strictly decreasing function of the particle energy and provided the steady state is not too relativistic. This should be an essential step in a fully non-linear stability analysis for the Einstein-Vlasov system. In the present paper it is exploited for obtaining a linearized stability result.

Spherically symmetric equilibria for self-gravitating kinetic or fluid models in the non-relativistic and relativistic case - A simple proof for finite extension

We consider a self-gravitating collisionless gas as described by the Vlasov-Poisson or Einstein-Vlasov system or a self-gravitating fluid ball as described by the Euler-Poisson or Einstein-Euler system. We give a simple proof for the finite extension of spherically symmetric equilibria, which covers all these models simultaneously. In the Vlasov case the equilibria are characterized by a local growth condition on the microscopic equation of state, i.e., on the dependence of the particle distribution on the particle energy, at the cut-off energy E_0, and in the Euler case by the corresponding growth condition on the equation of state p=P(ρ) at ρ=0. These purely local conditions are slight generalizations to known such conditions.

Existence of axially symmetric static solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov system

We prove the existence of static, asymptotically flat non-vacuum spacetimes with axial symmetry where the matter is modeled as a collisionless gas. The axially symmetric solutions of the resulting Einstein-Vlasov system are obtained via the implicit function theorem by perturbing off a suitable spherically symmetric steady state of the Vlasov-Poisson system.

Formation of trapped surfaces for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system

We consider the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat, non-vacuum Einstein equations, using as matter model a collisionless gas as described by the Vlasov equation. We find explicit conditions on the initial data which guarantee the formation of a trapped surface in the evolution which in particular implies that weak cosmic censorship holds for these data. We also analyze the evolution of solutions after a trapped surface has formed and we show that the event horizon is future complete. Furthermore we find that the apparent horizon and the event horizon do not coincide. This behavior is analogous to what is found in certain Vaidya spacetimes. The analysis is carried out in Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates.

A numerical investigation of the steady states of the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov-Maxwell system

We construct, by numerical means, static solutions of the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov-Maxwell system and investigate various features of the solutions. This extends a previous investigation \cite{AR1} of the chargeless case. We study the possible shapes of the energy density profile as a function of the area radius when the electric charge of an individual particle is varied as a parameter. We find profiles which are multi-peaked, where the peaks are separated either by vacuum or a thin atmosphere, and we find that for a sufficiently large charge parameter there are no physically meaningful solutions. Furthermore, we investigate if the inequality \sqrt{M}\leq \frac{\sqrt{R}}{3}+\sqrt{\frac{R}{9}+\frac{Q^2}{3R}}, derived in \cite{An2}, is sharp within the class of solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov-Maxwell system. Here M is the ADM mass, Q the charge, and R the area radius of the boundary of the static object. We find two classes of solutions with this property, while there is only one in the chargeless case. In particular we find numerical evidence for the existence of arbitrarily thin shell solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov-Maxwell system. Finally, we consider one parameter families of steady states, and we find spirals in the mass-radius diagram for all examples of the microscopic equation of state which we consider.

The asymptotic behaviour in Schwarzschild time of Vlasov matter in spherically symmetric gravitational collapse

Given a static Schwarzschild spacetime of ADM mass M, it is well-known that no ingoing causal geodesic starting in the outer domain r>2M will cross the event horizon r=2M in finite Schwarzschild time. In the present paper we show that in gravitational collapse of Vlasov matter this behaviour can be very different. We construct initial data for which a black hole forms and all matter crosses the event horizon as Schwarzschild time goes to infinity, and we show that this is a necessary condition for geodesic completeness of the event horizon. In addition to a careful analysis of the asymptotic behaviour of the matter characteristics our proof requires a new argument for global existence of solutions to the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system in an outer domain, since our initial data have non-compact support in the radial momentum variable and previous methods break down.

Gravitational collapse and the formation of black holes for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system

We review results on the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat Einstein-Vlasov system. We focus on a recent result where we found explicit conditions on the initial data which guarantee the formation of a black hole in the evolution. Among these data there are data such that the corresponding solutions exist globally in Schwarzschild coordinates. We put these results into a more general context, and we include arguments which show that the spacetimes we obtain satisfy the weak cosmic censorship conjecture and contain a black hole in the sense of suitable mathematical definitions of these concepts which are available in the literature.

Flat galaxies with dark matter halos - existence and stability

We consider a model for a flat, disk-like galaxy surrounded by a halo of dark matter, namely a Vlasov-Poisson type system with two particle species, the stars which are restricted to the galactic plane and the dark matter particles. These constituents interact only through the gravitational potential which stars and dark matter create collectively. Using a variational approach we prove the existence of steady state solutions and their nonlinear stability under suitably restricted perturbations.

The formation of black holes in spherically symmetric gravitational collapse

We consider the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat Einstein-Vlasov system. We find explicit conditions on the initial data, with ADM mass M, such that the resulting spacetime has the following properties: there is a family of radially outgoing null geodesics where the area radius r along each geodesic is bounded by 2M, the timelike lines $r=c\in [0,2M]$ are incomplete, and for r>2M the metric converges asymptotically to the Schwarzschild metric with mass M. The initial data that we construct guarantee the formation of a black hole in the evolution. We also give examples of such initial data with the additional property that the solutions exist for all $r\geq 0$ and all Schwarzschild time, i.e., we obtain global existence in Schwarzschild coordinates in situations where the initial data are not small. Some of our results are also established for the Einstein equations coupled to a general matter model characterized by conditions on the matter quantities.

Global existence for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system with outgoing matter

We prove a new global existence result for the asymptotically flat, spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system which describes in the framework of general relativity an ensemble of particles which interact by gravity. The data are such that initially all the particles are moving radially outward and that this property can be bootstrapped. The resulting non-vacuum spacetime is future geodesically complete.

On the steady states of the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system

Using both numerical and analytical tools we study various features of static, spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov system. In particular, we investigate the possible shapes of their mass-energy density and find that they can be multi-peaked, we give numerical evidence and a partial proof for the conjecture that the Buchdahl inequality $\sup_{r > 0} 2 m(r)/r < 8/9$, $m(r)$ the quasi-local mass, holds for all such steady states--both isotropic {\em and} anisotropic--, and we give numerical evidence and a partial proof for the conjecture that for any given microscopic equation of state--both isotropic {\em and} anisotropic--the resulting one-parameter family of static solutions generates a spiral in the radius-mass diagram.

Global existence and nonlinear stability for the relativistic Vlasov-Poisson system in the gravitational case

As is well known from the work of R. Glassey} and J. Schaeffer, the main energy estimates which are used in global existence results for the gravitational Vlasov-Poisson system do not apply to the relativistic version of this system, and smooth solutions to the initial value problem with spherically symmetric initial data of negative energy blow up in finite time. For similar reasons the variational techniques by which Y. Guo and G. Rein obtained nonlinear stability results for the Vlasov-Poisson system do not apply in the relativistic situation. In the present paper a direct, non-variational approach is used to prove nonlinear stability of certain steady states of the relativistic Vlasov-Poisson system against spherically symmetric, dynamically accessible perturbations. The resulting stability estimates imply that smooth solutions with spherically symmetric initial data which are sufficiently close to the stable steady states exist globally in time.

Stability of disk-like galaxies--Part I: Stability via reduction

We prove the existence and stability of flat steady states of the Vlasov-Poisson system, which in astrophysics are used as models of disk-like galaxies. We follow the variational approach developed by Guo and Rein for this type of problems and extend previous results of Rein. In particular, we employ a reduction procedure which relates the stability problem for the Vlasov-Poisson system to the analogous question for the Euler-Poisson system.

A non-variational approach to nonlinear stability in stellar dynamics applied to the King model

In previous work by Y. Guo and G. Rein, nonlinear stability of equilibria in stellar dynamics, i.e., of steady states of the Vlasov-Poisson system, was accessed by variational techniques. Here we propose a different, non-variational technique and use it to prove nonlinear stability of the King model against a class of spherically symmetric, dynamically accessible perturbations. This model is very important in astrophysics and was out of reach of the previous techniques.

A numerical investigation of the stability of steady states and critical phenomena for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system

The stability features of steady states of the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system are investigated numerically. We find support for the conjecture by Zeldovich and Novikov that the binding energy maximum along a steady state sequence signals the onset of instability, a conjecture which we extend to and confirm for non-isotropic states. The sign of the binding energy of a solution turns out to be relevant for its time evolution in general. We relate the stability properties to the question of universality in critical collapse and find that for Vlasov matter universality does not seem to hold.
