Including higher-order mixed QCD-QED effects in hadronic calculations

We review some recent results about the computation of mixed QCD-QED corrections beyond the leading order in perturbation theory. We start by considering the effects induced in the Altarelli-Parisi equations and the partonic distributions. In particular, we describe the computation of one-loop mixed QCD-QED and two-loop QED terms in the splitting kernels, which are relevant to account for the presence of photon distributions. In the last part, we briefly talk about the implementation of these corrections in the context of the $q_T$-subtraction/resummation formalism.

Universal dual amplitudes and asymptotic expansions for $gg\to H$ and $H\to γγ$ in four dimensions

Though the one-loop amplitudes of the Higgs boson to massless gauge bosons are finite because there is no direct interaction at tree-level in the Standard Model, a well-defined regularization scheme is still required for their correct evaluation. We reanalyze these amplitudes in the framework of the four-dimensional unsubtraction and the loop-tree duality (FDU/LTD), and show how a local renormalization solves potential regularization ambiguities. The Higgs boson interactions are also used to illustrate new additional advantages of this formalism. We show that LTD naturally leads to very compact integrand expressions in four space-time dimensions of the one-loop amplitude with virtual electroweak gauge bosons. They exhibit the same functional form as the amplitudes with top quarks and charged scalars, thus opening further possibilities for simplifications in higher-order computations. Another outstanding application is the straightforward implementation of asymptotic expansions by using dual amplitudes. One of the main benefits of the LTD representation is that it is supported in a Euclidean space. This characteristic feature naturally leads to simpler asymptotic expansions.

Recent developments from the loop-tree duality

In this talk, we review the most recent developments of the four-dimensional unsubstraction (FDU) and loop-tree duality (LTD) methods. In particular, we make emphasis on the advantages of the LTD formalism regarding asymptotic expansions of loop integrands.

Two-loop QED corrections to the Altarelli-Parisi splitting functions

We compute the two-loop QED corrections to the Altarelli-Parisi (AP) splitting functions by using a deconstructive algorithmic Abelianization of the well-known NLO QCD corrections. We present explicit results for the full set of splitting kernels in a basis that includes the leptonic distribution functions that, starting from this order in the QED coupling, couple to the partonic densities. Finally, we perform a phenomenological analysis of the impact of these corrections in the splitting functions.

QED corrections to the Altarelli-Parisi splitting functions

We discuss the combined effect of QED and QCD corrections to the evolution of parton distributions. We extend the available knowledge of the Altarelli-Parisi splitting functions to one order higher in QED, and provide explicit expressions for the splitting kernels up to ${\cal O}(α\, α_{\mathrm{S}})$. The results presented in this article allow to perform a parton distribution function analysis reaching full NLO QCD-QED combined precision.

Four-dimensional regularization of higher-order computations: FDU approach

We have recently proposed a new regularization framework based on the loop-tree duality theorem. This theorem allows to rewrite loop level amplitudes in terms of tree-level structures and phase-space integrations. In consequence, it is possible to combine naturally real and virtual contributions at integrand level. Moreover, through the introduction of a proper momentum-mapping, a complete local cancellation of infrared singularities is achieved, by-passing the necessity of counter-terms. In this article, we briefly explain the implementation of this novel approach to compute some physical processes, and we show how to deal with both infrared and ultraviolet divergences without using DREG.

On the universal structure of Higgs amplitudes mediated by heavy particles

We describe the calculation of the one-loop corrections to $H \to γγ$ and $g g \to H$ within the four-dimensional unsubtraction/loop-tree duality (FDU/LTD) approach. The fact that these corrections are both IR and UV finite is not enough to perform the computation without a proper regularization of the intermediate steps. We show how the FDU/LTD method unambiguously leads to the proper result with a pure four-dimensional representation of the loop amplitude. Moreover, this method allows us to obtain very compact expressions which share the same functional structure independently of the particles circulating the loop. Besides this, asymptotic expansions for the low and high mass regime naturally arise as a consequence of the smoothness of the integrands obtained to describe the amplitudes.

Higher-order QED effects in hadronic processes

In this presentation, we describe the computation of higher-order QED effects relevant in hadronic collisions. In particular, we discuss the calculation of mixed QCD-QED one-loop contributions to the Altarelli-Parisi splittings functions, as well as the pure two-loop QED corrections. We explain how to extend the DGLAP equations to deal with new parton distributions, emphasizing the consequences of the novel corrections in the determination (and evolution) of the photon distributions.

Mixed QCD-QED corrections to DGLAP equations

We study the mixed effect of QCD and QED corrections to the evolution of parton distribution functions (PDFs). The Altarelli-Parisi splitting functions are extended to one order higher in QED, reaching ${\cal O}(α\, α_S^2)$ accuracy. This also involves extending DGLAP equations to include charge separation effects, that are ignored for pure QCD corrections. Besides that, these effects are crucial for the determination of the photon distribution, which plays an increasingly important role in nowadays phenomenological analysis.

Towards regularized higher-order computations in QFT without DREG

In this talk, we review the basis of the loop-tree duality theorem, which allows to rewrite loop scattering amplitudes in terms of tree-level like objects. Since the loop measure is converted into a phase-space one, both virtual and real contributions are expressible using the same integration variables. A physically motivated momentum mapping allows to generate the real emission process starting from the Born kinematics and the loop momenta. The integrand-level combination leads to regular functions, which can be integrated without using dimensional regularization (DREG) and correctly reproduce the finite higher-order corrections to physical observables. We explain the implementation of this novel approach to compute some benchmark physical processes, and we show how to deal with both infrared and ultraviolet divergences in four space-time dimensions.

Higher-orders in heavy quark processes within the LTD approach

The computation of perturbative corrections to processes involving heavy quarks is crucial for the precision program of the LHC and future colliders. In this article, we describe a powerful approach to calculate higher-orders in QCD skipping the traditional subtraction method. Our proposal is based on the loop-tree duality (LTD) theorem, which allows to rewrite virtual contributions in terms of integrals over the real emission phase-space. Then, we proceed to combine both real and virtual contributions at the integrand level, obtaining regular expressions that can be numerically integrated in four space-time dimensions. In this way, we avoid dealing with complicated massive Feynman integrals and introducing infrared counter-terms. Some reference examples are explained, in order to exhibit the potential of our method.

Four-dimensional unsubtraction from the loop-tree duality

We present a new algorithm to construct a purely four dimensional representation of higher-order perturbative corrections to physical cross-sections at next-to-leading order (NLO). The algorithm is based on the loop-tree duality (LTD), and it is implemented by introducing a suitable mapping between the external and loop momenta of the virtual scattering amplitudes, and the external momenta of the real emission corrections. In this way, the sum over degenerate infrared states is performed at integrand level and the cancellation of infrared divergences occurs locally without introducing subtraction counter-terms to deal with soft and final-state collinear singularities. The dual representation of ultraviolet counter-terms is also discussed in detail, in particular for self-energy contributions. The method is first illustrated with the scalar three-point function, before proceeding with the calculation of the physical cross-section for $γ^* \to q \bar{q}(g)$, and its generalisation to multi-leg processes. The extension to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) is briefly commented.

Applications of the loop-tree duality

We describe a new method to perform NLO calculations, combining real and virtual amplitudes at the integrand level, with a fully local compensation between them in the IR, and between the virtual integrand and properly defined counter-terms in the UV, in such a way that physical observables can be computed in 4 dimensions. One of the advantages of the method is that all the scattering amplitudes are integrated simultaneously, without the need for tensor reduction, or projection onto sets of master integrals. As such, it could offer great progress in the automation of NLO calculations, where the actual bottle-necks are the complexity of the analytical calculations for multi-leg processes, and the numerical stability of the result.

Four-dimensional unsubtraction with massive particles

We extend the four-dimensional unsubtraction method, which is based on the loop-tree duality (LTD), to deal with processes involving heavy particles. The method allows to perform the summation over degenerate IR configurations directly at integrand level in such a way that NLO corrections can be implemented directly in four space-time dimensions. We define a general momentum mapping between the real and virtual kinematics that accounts properly for the quasi-collinear configurations, and leads to an smooth massless limit. We illustrate the method first with an scalar toy example, and then analyse the case of the decay of a scalar or vector boson into a pair of massive quarks. The results presented in this paper are suitable for the application of the method to any multipartonic process.

Towards gauge theories in four dimensions

The abundance of infrared singularities in gauge theories due to unresolved emission of massless particles (soft and collinear) represents the main difficulty in perturbative calculations. They are typically regularized in dimensional regularization, and their subtraction is usually achieved independently for virtual and real corrections. In this paper, we introduce a new method based on the loop-tree duality (LTD) theorem to accomplish the summation over degenerate infrared states directly at the integrand level such that the cancellation of the infrared divergences is achieved simultaneously, and apply it to reference examples as a proof of concept. Ultraviolet divergences, which are the consequence of the point-like nature of the theory, are also reinterpreted physically in this framework. The proposed method opens the intriguing possibility of carrying out purely four-dimensional implementations of higher-order perturbative calculations at next-to-leading order (NLO) and beyond free of soft and final-state collinear subtractions.

Loop-tree duality and quantum field theory in four dimensions

Loop-tree duality allows to express virtual contributions in terms of phase-space integrals, thus leading to a direct comparison with real radiation terms. In this talk, we review the basis of the method and describe its application to regularize Feynman integrals. Performing an integrand-level combination of real and virtual terms, we obtain finite contributions that can be computed in four-dimensions. Moreover, this method provides a natural physical interpretation of infrared singularities, their origin and the way that they cancel in the complete computation.

Higher-order QCD corrections to triple collinear splitting functions

We present splitting functions in the triple collinear limit at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling. We performed the computation in the context of massless QCD+QED, and consider first collinear processes which include at least one photon. The IR divergent structure of the multi-partonic splitting functions agrees with the Catani's formula. Consistency checks based on symmetry arguments have been implemented and results for different configurations have been cross-checked. Studying photon-started processes, we obtained very compact results: this allowed us to simplify the expressions for the remaining splitting functions.

From dimensional regularization to NLO computations in four dimensions

Loop-tree duality (LTD) allows to express virtual contributions in terms of phase-space integrals, thus leading to a direct mapping with real radiation terms. We review the basis of the method and describe its application to regularize Feynman integrals. Performing an integrand-level combination of real and virtual terms, we show how to recover physical results by simply taking the four-dimensional limit of $d$-dimensional expressions. Moreover, this method provides a natural physical interpretation of infrared singularities, their origin and the way that they cancel in the complete computation.
