Phase bistability and phase bistable patterns in self-oscillatory systems under a resonant periodic forcing with spatially modulated amplitude

I consider the problem of self-oscillatory systems undergoing a homogeneous Hopf bifurcation when they are submitted to an external forcing that is periodic in time, at a frequency close to the system's natural frequency (1:1 resonance), and whose amplitude is slowly modulated in space. Starting from a general, unspecified model and making use of standard multiple scales analysis, I show that the close-to-threshold dynamics of such systems is universally governed by a generalized, complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation. The nature of the generalization depends on the strength and of other features of forcing: (i) For generic, sufficiently weak forcings the CGL equation contains an extra, inhomogeneous term proportional to the complex amplitude of forcing, as in the usual 1:1 resonance with spatially uniform forcing; (ii) For stronger perturbations, whose amplitude sign alternates across the system, the CGL equation contains a term proportional to the complex conjugate of the oscillations envelope, like in the classical 2:1 resonance, responsible for the emergence of phase bistability and of phase bistable patterns in the system. Finally I show that case (ii) is retrieved from case (i) in the appropriate limit so that the latter can be regarded as the generic model for the close-to-threshold dynamics of the type of systems considered here. The kind of forcing studied in this work thus represents an alternative to the classical parametric forcing at twice the natural frequency of oscillations and opens the way to new forms of pattern formation control in self-oscillatory systems, what is especially relevant in the case of systems that are quite insensitive to parametric forcing, such as lasers and other nonlinear optical cavities.

On canonical pairs in 2-transverse-mode DOPOs

In ref. [1] we analyzed the properties of a Degenerate Optical Parametric Oscillator (DOPO) tuned to the first transverse mode family at the signal frequency. Above threshold, a Hermite-Gauss mode with an arbitrary orientation in the transverse plane is emitted, and thus the rotational invariance of the system is broken. When quantum effects were taken into account, it was found on the one hand, that quantum noise is able to induce a random rotation on this classically emitted mode. On the other hand, the analysis of a balanced homodyne detection in which the local oscillator (LO) was orthogonal to the excited mode at any time, showed that squeezing in the quadrature selected by the LO was found for every phase of this one, squeezing being perfect for a pi/2 phase. This last fact revealed an apparent paradox: If all quadratures are below shot noise level, the uncertainty principle seems to be violated. In [1] we stated that the explanation behind this paradox is that the quadratures of the rotating orthogonal mode do not form a canonical pair, and the extra noise is transferred to the diffusing orientation. Thes notes are devoted to prove this claim.

Non-critically squeezed light via spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking

We theoretically address squeezed light generation through the spontaneous breaking of the rotational invariance occuring in a type I degenerate optical parametric oscillator (DOPO) pumped above threshold. We show that a DOPO with spherical mirrors, in which the signal and idler fields correspond to first order Laguerre-Gauss modes, produces a perfectly squeezed vacuum with the shape of a Hermite-Gauss mode, within the linearized theory. This occurs at any pumping level above threshold, hence the phenomenon is non-critical. Imperfections of the rotational symmetry, due e.g. to cavity anisotropy, are shown to have a small impact, hence the result is not singular.

Theory of quantum fluctuations of optical dissipative structures and its application to the squeezing properties of bright cavity solitons

We present a method for the study of quantum fluctuations of dissipative structures forming in nonlinear optical cavities, which we illustrate in the case of a degenerate, type I optical parametric oscillator. The method consists in (i) taking into account explicitly, through a collective variable description, the drift of the dissipative structure caused by the quantum noise, and (ii) expanding the remaining -internal- fluctuations in the biorthonormal basis associated to the linear operator governing the evolution of fluctuations in the linearized Langevin equations. We obtain general expressions for the squeezing and intensity fluctuations spectra. Then we theoretically study the squeezing properties of a special dissipative structure, namely, the bright cavity soliton. After reviewing our previous result that in the linear approximation there is a perfectly squeezed mode irrespectively of the values of the system parameters, we consider squeezing at the bifurcation points, and the squeezing detection with a plane--wave local oscillator field, taking also into account the effect of the detector size on the level of detectable squeezing.

Phase-locking of a Nonlinear Optical Cavity via Rocking: Transmuting Vortices into Phase Patterns

We report experimental observation of the conversion of a phase-invariant nonlinear system into a phase-locked one via the mechanism of rocking [G. J. de Valcarcel and K. Staliunas, Phys. Rev. E 67, 026604 (2003)]. This conversion results in that vortices of the phase-invariant system are being replaced by phase patterns such as domain walls. The experiment is carried out on a photorefractive oscillator in two-wave mixing configuration.A model for the experimental device is given that reproduces the observed behavior.

Semiclassical Theory of Amplification and Lasing

In this article we present a systematic derivation of the Maxwell-Bloch equations describing amplification and laser action in a ring cavity. We derive the Maxwell-Bloch equations for a two-level medium and discuss their applicability to standard three- and four-level systems. After discusing amplification, we consider lasing and pay special attention to the obtention of the laser equations in the uniform field approximation. Finally, the connection of the laser equations with the Lorenz model is considered.

Quantum squeezing of optical dissipative structures

We show that any optical dissipative structure supported by degenerate optical parametric oscillators contains a special transverse mode that is free from quantum fluctuations when measured in a balanced homodyne detection experiment. The phenomenon is not critical as it is independent of the system parameters and, in particular, of the existence of bifurcations. This result is a consequence of the spatial symmetry breaking introduced by the dissipative structure. Effects that could degrade the squeezing level are considered.

Experimental characterization of domain walls dynamics in a photorefractive oscillator

We report the experimental characterization of domain walls dynamics in a photorefractive resonator in a degenerate four wave mixing configuration. We show how the non flat profile of the emitted field affects the velocity of domain walls as well as the variations of intensity and phase gradient during their motion. We find a clear correlation between these two last quantities that allows the experimental determination of the chirality that governs the domain walls dynamics.

Sub-Diffractive Band-Edge Solitons in Bose-Einstein Condensates in Periodic Potentials

A new type of matter wave diffraction management is presented that leads to sub-diffractive soliton-like structures. The proposed management technique uses two counter-moving, identical periodic potentials (e.g. optical lattices). For suitable lattice parameters a novel type of atomic band-gap structure appears in which the effective atomic mass becomes infinite at the lowest edge of an energy band. This way normal matter-wave diffraction (proportional to the square of the atomic momentum) is replaced by fourth-order diffraction, and hence the evolution of the system becomes sub-diffractive.

Domain wall dynamics in an optical Kerr cavity

An anisotropic (dichroic) optical cavity containing a self-focusing Kerr medium is shown to display a bifurcation between static --Ising-- and moving --Bloch-- domain walls, the so-called nonequilibrium Ising-Bloch transition (NIB). Bloch walls can show regular or irregular temporal behaviour, in particular, bursting and spiking. These phenomena are interpreted in terms of the spatio-temporal dynamics of the extended patterns connected by the wall, which display complex dynamical behaviour as well. Domain wall interaction, including the formation of bound states is also addressed.

Squeezing spectra from s-ordered quasiprobability distributions. Application to dispersive optical bistability

It is well known that the squeezing spectrum of the field exiting a nonlinear cavity can be directly obtained from the fluctuation spectrum of normally ordered products of creation and annihilation operators of the cavity mode. In this article we show that the output field squeezing spectrum can be derived also by combining the fluctuation spectra of any pair of s-ordered products of creation and annihilation operators. The interesting result is that the spectrum obtained in this way from the linearized Langevin equations is exact, and this occurs in spite of the fact that no s-ordered quasiprobability distribution verifies a true Fokker-Planck equation, i.e., the Langevin equations used for deriving the squeezing spectrum are not exact. The (linearized) intracavity squeezing obtained from any s-ordered distribution is also exact. These results are exemplified in the problem of dispersive optical bistability.

Ising-Bloch Transition in Degenerate Optical Parametric Oscillators

Domain walls in type I degenerate optical parametric oscillators are numerically investigated. Both steady Ising and moving Bloch walls are found, bifurcating one into another through a nonequilibrium Ising--Bloch transition. Bloch walls are found that connect either homogeneous or roll planforms. Secondary bifurcations affecting Bloch wall movement are characterized that lead to a transition from a steady drift state to a temporal chaotic movement as the system is moved far from the primary, Ising--Bloch bifurcation. Two kinds of routes to chaos are found, both involving tori: a usual Ruelle-Takens and an intermittent scenarios.

Faraday Patterns in low-dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensates

We show that Faraday patterns can be excited in the weak confinement space of low-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates by temporal modulation of the trap width, or equivalently of the trap frequency Omega_tight, in the tight confinement space. For slow modulation, as compared with Omega_tight, the low-dimensional dynamics of the condensate in the weak confinement space is described by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation with time modulated nonlinearity coefficient. For increasing modulation frequencies a noticeable reduction of the pattern formation threshold is observed close to 2*Omega_tight, which is related to the parametric excitation of the internal breathing mode in the tight confinement space. These predictions could be relevant for the experimental excitation of Faraday patterns in Bose-Einstein condensates.

Complex Ginzburg-Landau equation for self-oscillatory systems under amplitude modulated forcing in a 1:1 resonance

The dynamics of self-oscillatory extended systems, resonantly forced at a frequency close to that of the natural oscillations (1:1 resonance), is shown to be universally described by a complex Ginzburg-Landau equation containing an inhomogeneous term. The case of amplitude modulated forcing is considered, which generalizes previous studies. Application to the two-frequency forcing in a 1:1 resonance is considered as an example.

Faraday patterns in Bose-Einstein condensates

Temporal periodic modulation of the interatomic s-wave scattering length in Bose-Einstein condensates is shown to excite subharmonic patterns of atom density through a parametric resonance. The dominating wavelength of the spatial structures is shown to be primarily selected by the excitation frequency but also affected by the depth of the spatial modulation via a nonlinear resonance. These phenomena represent macroscopic quantum analogues of the Faraday waves excited in vertically shaken liquids.

Faraday patterns in Bose-Einstein condensates. Amplitude equation for rolls in the parametrically driven, damped Gross-Pitaevskii equation

The parametrically driven, damped Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which models Bose-Einstein condensates in which the interatomic s-wave scattering length is modulated in time, is shown to support spatially modulated states in the form of rolls. A Landau equation with broken phase symmetry is derived, which governs the dynamics of the roll amplitude.
