Heavy quark impact factor for the LHC phenomenology

We comment on the calculation of the finite part of the heavy quark impact factor at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLx) accuracy. The result is presented in a form suitable for phenomenological studies such as the calculation of the cross-section for single heavy quark production at the LHC within the kT-factorization scheme.

Heavy quark impact factor in kT-factorization

We present the calculation of the finite part of the heavy quark impact factor at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy in a form suitable for phenomenological studies such as the calculation of the cross-section for single bottom quark production at the LHC within the kT-factorization scheme.

Factorization violation in the multiparton collinear limit

We present an all-order generalized factorization formula for QCD scattering amplitudes in kinematical configurations where two or more momenta of the external partons become collinear. The singular behaviour of the scattering amplitudes in the collinear limit is encoded by collinear splitting matrices. In the space-like region and beyond the tree level, the collinear splitting matrices depend also on the momenta and quantum numbers of the non-collinear partons, thus breaking strict collinear factorization. Although the factorization breaking contribution partly cancels for squared amplitudes, due to its one-loop absorptive origin, remaining effects at high perturbative orders have implications on the non-abelian structure of logarithmically-enhanced terms in perturbative calculations and on various factorization issues of mass singularities.

Tree-Loop Duality Relation beyond simple poles

We develop the Tree-Loop Duality Relation for two- and three-loop integrals with multiple identical propagators (multiple poles). This is the extension of the Duality Relation for single poles and multiloop integrals derived in previous publications. We prove a generalization of the formula for single poles to multiple poles and we develop a strategy for dealing with higher-order pole integrals by reducing them to single pole integrals using Integration By Parts.

The ttbar asymmetry in the Standard Model and beyond

A sizable charge asymmetry in top quark pair production has been observed at the Tevatron. The experimental results seem to exceed systematically the Standard Model theory predictions by a significant amount and have triggered a large number of suggestions for 'new physics'. The effect is also visible at the LHC, and preliminary results have already been presented by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations. In this talk, we review the present status of the theoretical predictions, and their comparison with the experimental measurements.

Space-like (vs. time-like) collinear limits in QCD: is factorization violated?

We consider the singular behaviour of QCD scattering amplitudes in kinematical configurations where two or more momenta of the external partons become collinear. At the tree level, this behaviour is known to be controlled by factorization formulae in which the singular collinear factor is universal (process independent). We show that this strict (process-independent) factorization is not valid at one-loop and higher-loop orders in the case of the collinear limit in space-like regions (e.g., collinear radiation from initial-state partons). We introduce a generalized version of all-order collinear factorization, in which the space-like singular factors retain some dependence on the momentum and colour charge of the non-collinear partons. We present explicit results on one-loop and two-loop amplitudes for both the two-parton and multiparton collinear limits. At the level of square amplitudes and, more generally, cross sections in hadron--hadron collisions, the violation of strict collinear factorization has implications on the non-abelian structure of logarithmically-enhanced terms in perturbative calculations (starting from the next-to-next-to-leading order) and on various factorization issues of mass singularities (starting from the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order).

Charge asymmetries of top quarks at hadron colliders revisited

A sizeable difference in the differential production cross section of top- compared to antitop-quark production, denoted charge asymmetry, has been observed at the Tevatron. The experimental results seem to exceed the theory predictions based on the Standard Model by a significant amount and have triggered a large number of suggestions for "new physics". In the present paper the Standard Model predictions for Tevatron and LHC experiments are revisited. This includes a reanalysis of electromagnetic as well as weak corrections, leading to a shift of the asymmetry by roughly a factor 1.1 when compared to the results of the first papers on this subject. The impact of cuts on the transverse momentum of the top-antitop system is studied. Restricting the ttbar system to a transverse momentum less than 20 GeV leads to an enhancement of the asymmetries by factors between 1.3 and 1.5, indicating the importance of an improved understanding of the $t\bar t$-momentum distribution. Predictions for similar measurements at the LHC are presented, demonstrating the sensitivity of the large rapidity region both to the Standard Model contribution and effects from "new physics".

Feynman's Tree Theorem and Loop-Tree Dualities

We discuss the duality theorem, which provides a relation between loop integrals and phase space integrals. We rederive the duality relation for the one-loop case and extend it to two and higher-order loops. We explicitly show its application to two- and three-loop scalar master integrals and discuss the structure of the occurring cuts.

A Tree-Loop Duality Relation at Two Loops and Beyond

The duality relation between one-loop integrals and phase-space integrals, developed in a previous work, is extended to higher-order loops. The duality relation is realized by a modification of the customary +i0 prescription of the Feynman propagators, which compensates for the absence of the multiple-cut contributions that appear in the Feynman tree theorem. We rederive the duality theorem at one-loop order in a form that is more suitable for its iterative extension to higher-loop orders. We explicitly show its application to two- and three-loop scalar master integrals, and we discuss the structure of the occurring cuts and the ensuing results in detail.

Charge asymmetry: a theory appraisal

The most recent measurements at Tevatron of the charge asymmetry in top-antitop quark pair production reduce the discrepancy with the Standard Model from 2sigma to 1.7sigma, and open a little window, at 95% C.L., for negative contributions to the charge asymmetry beyond the SM. We update our analysis for colour octet gauge bosons or axigluons in flavour universal and flavour non universal scenarios. We review other possible models and make an educated guess on their parameter space allowed by the new measurements. Finally, we comment on the prospects to measure the charge asymmetry at the LHC.

Charge asymmetry of top quarks

The LHC is a promising machine to discover new physics in the top sector. There are several models that predict the existence of heavy colored resonances decaying to top quarks in the TeV energy range. The production of such resonances might generate a sizable charge asymmetry of top versus antitop quarks. At the Tevatron, a 2 sigma discrepancy with the SM prediction for the forward--backward asymmetry has been found, boosting a renewed interest for this kind of models. We consider a toy model with general flavour dependent couplings of the resonance to quarks, of both vector and axial-vector kind and investigate the possible constraints on the coupling space from the measurement of the asymmetry and the invariant mass distribution at the Tevatron. Then, we define a central asymmetry in a specific kinematic region and investigate its signature at the LHC as well as its statistical significance, for exclusive processes.

Gauge Mediated SUSY Breaking via Seesaw

We present a simple scenario for gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking where the messengers are also the fields that generate neutrino masses. We show that the simplest such scenario corresponds to the case where neutrino masses are generated through the Type I and Type III seesaw mechanisms. The entire supersymmetric spectrum and Higgs masses are calculable from only four input parameters. Since the electroweak symmetry is broken through a doubly radiative mechanism, meaning a nearly zero B-term at the messenger scale which runs down to acceptable values, one obtains quite a constrained spectrum for the supersymmetric particles whose properties we describe. We refer to this mechanism as "nu-GMSB".

Heavy colored resonances in top-antitop + jet at the LHC

The LHC is the perfect environment for the study of new physics in the top quark sector. We study the possibility of detecting signals of heavy color-octet vector resonances, through the charge asymmetry, in top-antitop+jet events. Besides contributions with the top-antitop pair in a color-singlet state, the asymmetry gets also contributions which are proportional to the color factor f_{abc}^2. This process is particularly interesting for extra-dimensional models, where the inclusive charge asymmetry generated by Kaluza-Klein excitations of the gluon vanishes at the tree level. We find that the statistical significance for the measurement of such an asymmetry is sizable for different values of the coupling constants and already at low energies.

Constraining heavy colored resonances from top-antitop quark events

Recent measurements of the top quark charge asymmetry at Tevatron disfavor the existence of flavor universal axigluons and colorons at 2 sigmas. In this letter we explore the possibility to reconcile the data with these models and use the charge asymmetry and the invariant mass distribution of top-antitop quark pair events to constrain the mass and couplings of massive color-octet gauge bosons decaying to top quarks.

Charge asymmetries of top quarks: a window to new physics at hadron colliders

With the next start of LHC, a huge production of top quarks is expected. There are several models that predict the existence of heavy colored resonances decaying to top quarks in the TeV energy range. A peak in the differential cross section could reveal the existence of such a resonance, but this is experimentally challenging, because it requires selecting data samples where top and antitop quarks are highly boosted. Nonetheless, the production of such resonances might generate a sizable charge asymmetry of top versus antitop quarks. We consider a toy model with general flavour independent couplings of the resonance to quarks, of both vector and axial-vector kind. The charge asymmetry turns out to be a more powerful observable to detect new physics than the differential cross section, because its highest statistical significance is achieved with data samples of top-antitop quark pairs of low invariant masses.

Massive color-octet bosons and the charge asymmetries of top quarks at hadron colliders

Several models predict the existence of heavy colored resonances decaying to top quarks in the TeV energy range that might be discovered at the LHC. In some of those models, moreover, a sizable charge asymmetry of top versus antitop quarks might be generated. The detection of these exotic resonances, however, requires selecting data samples where the top and the antitop quarks are highly boosted, which is experimentally very challenging. We asses that the measurement of the top quark charge asymmetry at the LHC is very sensitive to the existence of excited states of the gluon with axial-vector couplings to quarks. We use a toy model with general flavour independent couplings, and show that a signal can be detected with relatively not too energetic top and antitop quarks. We also compare the results with the asymmetry predicted by QCD, and show that its highest statistical significance is achieved with data samples of top-antitop quark pairs of low invariant masses.
