Entanglement asymmetry characterization of the Chiral Anomaly

Shao et al. recently showed that the 1+1D staggered fermion Hamiltonian admits a whole algebra of lattice operators that flow to the same axial charge in the thermodynamic limit (TL). On the lattice the principal axial charge does not commute with the vector charge, although their commutator is expected to vanish in the TL, providing a lattice realization of the chiral anomaly. We investigate the effect of this anomaly on the ground state(s) using the entanglement asymmetry. Unexpectedly, the asymmetry remains nonzero in the TL, despite the vanishing of the commutator, and exhibits a novel scaling behavior.

Photonic implementation of the quantum Morra game

In this paper, we study a faithful translation of a two-player quantum Morra game, which builds on previous work by including the classical game as a special case. We propose a natural deformation of the game in the quantum regime in which Alice has a winning advantage, breaking the balance of the classical game. A Nash equilibrium can be found in some cases by employing a pure strategy, which is impossible in the classical game where a mixed strategy is always required. We prepared our states using photonic qubits on a linear optics setup, with an average deviation less than 2% with respect to the measured outcome probabilities. Finally, we discuss potential applications of the quantum Morra game to the study of quantum information and communication.

General quantum Chinos games

The Chinos game is a non-cooperative game between players who try to guess the total sum of coins drawn collectively. Semiclassical and quantum versions of this game were proposed by F. Guinea and M. A. Martin-Delgado, in J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 36 L197 (2003), where the coins are replaced by a boson whose number occupancy is the aim of player's guesses. Here, we propose other versions of the Chinos game using a hard-core boson, one qubit and two qubits. In the latter case, we find that using entangled states the second player has a stable winning strategy that becomes symmetric for non-entangled states. Finally, we use the IBM Quantum Experience to compute the basic quantities involved in the two-qubit version of the game

Tensor Renormalization Group for interacting quantum fields

We present a new tensor network algorithm for calculating the partition function of interacting quantum field theories in 2 dimensions. It is based on the Tensor Renormalization Group (TRG) protocol, adapted to operate entirely at the level of fields. This strategy was applied in Ref.[1] to the much simpler case of a free boson, obtaining an excellent performance. Here we include an arbitrary self-interaction and treat it in the context of perturbation theory. A real space analogue of the Wilsonian effective action and its expansion in Feynman graphs is proposed. Using a $λϕ^4$ theory for benchmark, we evaluate the order $λ$ correction to the free energy. The results show a fast convergence with the bond dimension, implying that our algorithm captures well the effect of interaction on entanglement.

Integrability and scattering of the boson field theory on a lattice

A free boson on a lattice is the simplest field theory one can think of. Its partition function can be easily computed in momentum space. However, this straightforward solution hides its integrability properties. Here, we use the methods of exactly solvable models, that are currently applied to spin systems, to a massless and massive free boson on a 2D lattice. The Boltzmann weights of the model are shown to satisfy the Yang-Baxter equation with a uniformization given by trigonometric functions in the massless case, and Jacobi elliptic functions in the massive case. We diagonalize the row-to-row transfer matrix, derive the conserved quantities, and implement the quantum inverse scattering method. Finally, we construct two factorized scattering $S$ matrix models for continuous degrees of freedom using trigonometric and elliptic functions. These results place the free boson model in 2D in the same position as the rest of the models that are exactly solvable à la Yang-Baxter, offering possible applications in quantum computation.

Free Fall of a Quantum Many-Body System

The quantum version of the free fall problem is a topic often skipped in undergraduate quantum mechanics courses because its discussion usually requires wavepackets built on the Airy functions -- a difficult computation. Here, on the contrary, we show that the problem can be nicely simplified both for a single particle and for general many-body systems by making use of a gauge transformation that corresponds to a change of reference frame from the laboratory frame to the one comoving with the falling system. Using this approach, the quantum mechanics problem of a particle in an external gravitational potential reduces to a much simpler one where there is no longer any gravitational potential in the Schr\"{o}dinger equation. It is instructive to see that the same procedure can be used for many-body systems subjected to an external gravitational potential and a two-body interparticle potential that is a function of the distance between the particles. This topic provides a helpful and pedagogical example of a quantum many-body system whose dynamics can be analytically described in simple terms.

Dynamics of one-dimensional quantum many-body systems in time-periodic linear potentials

We study a system of one-dimensional interacting quantum particles subjected to a time-periodic potential linear in space. After discussing the cases of driven one- and two-particles systems, we derive the analogous results for the many-particles case in presence of a general interaction two-body potential and the corresponding Floquet Hamiltonian. When the undriven model is integrable, the Floquet Hamitlonian is shown to be integrable too. We determine the micro-motion operator and the expression for a generic time evolved state of the system. We discuss various aspects of the dynamics of the system both at stroboscopic and intermediate times, in particular the motion of the center of mass of a generic wavepacket and its spreading over time. We also discuss the case of accelerated motion of the center of mass, obtained when the integral of the coeffcient strenght of the linear potential on a time period is non-vanishing, and we show that the Floquet Hamiltonian gets in this case an additional static linear potential. We also discuss the application of the obtained results to the Lieb-Liniger model.

Multi-Layer Restricted Boltzmann Machine Representation of 1D Quantum Many-Body Wave Functions

We consider representing two classes of 1D quantum wave functions of spin systems, including the AKLT and CFT correlator wave functions, in terms of multi-layer restricted Boltzmann machines. In our prescription, the AKLT wave function can be exactly represented by a 2-layer restricted Boltzmann machine with five hidden spins per visible spin. The construction can be generalized to prove that any MPS wave function on $N$ unit cells with finite bond dimension can be approximated by a 2-layer restricted Boltzmann machine with $\mathcal{O}(N)$ hidden spins within an error which scales linearly with $N$. The Haldane-Shastry wave function or a chiral boson CFT correlator wave function, as any Jastrow type of wave functions, can be exactly written as a 1-layer Boltzmann machine with $\mathcal{O}(N^2)$ hidden spins and $N$ visible spins. Applying the cumulant expansion, we further find that the chiral boson CFT correlator wave function (with small vertex operator conformal dimension $α$, i.e., $α<0.1$) can be approximated, within 99.9\% accuracy up to 22 visible spins, by a 1-layer RBM with $\mathcal{O}(N)$ hidden spins. The cumulant expansion also leads us to a physically inspiring result in which the hidden spins of the restricted Boltzmann machine can be interpreted as the conformal tower of the chiral boson CFT on the cylinder.

Integrable Floquet Hamiltonian for a Periodically Tilted 1D Gas

An integrable model subjected to a periodic driving gives rise generally to a non-integrable Floquet Hamiltonian. Here we show that the Floquet Hamiltonian of the integrable Lieb--Liniger model in presence of a linear potential with a periodic time--dependent strength is instead integrable and its quasi-energies can be determined using the Bethe ansatz approach. We discuss various aspects of the dynamics of the system at stroboscopic times and we also propose a possible experimental realisation of the periodically driven tilting in terms of a shaken rotated ring potential.

Tensor renormalization group in bosonic field theory

We compute the partition function of a massive free boson in a square lattice using a tensor network algorithm. We introduce a singular value decomposition (SVD) of continuous matrices that leads to very accurate numerical results. It is shown the emergence of a CDL fixed point structure. In the massless limit, we reproduce the results of conformal field theory including a precise value of the central charge.

Multipartite entanglement in spin chains and the Hyperdeterminant

A way to characterize multipartite entanglement in pure states of a spin chain with $n$ sites and local dimension $d$ is by means of the Cayley hyperdeterminant. The latter quantity is a polynomial constructed with the components of the wave function $ψ_{i_1, \dots, i_n}$ which is invariant under local unitary transformation. For spin 1/2 chains (i.e. $d=2$) with $n=2$ and $n=3$ sites, the hyperdeterminant coincides with the concurrence and the tangle respectively. In this paper we consider spin chains with $n=4$ sites where the hyperdeterminant is a polynomial of degree 24 containing around $2.8 \times 10^6$ terms. This huge object can be written in terms of more simple polynomials $S$ and $T$ of degrees 8 and 12 respectively. In this paper we compute $S$, $T$ and the hyperdeterminant for eigenstates of the following spin chain Hamiltonians: the transverse Ising model, the XXZ Heisenberg model and the Haldane-Shastry model. Those invariants are also computed for random states, the ground states of random matrix Hamiltonians in the Wigner-Dyson Gaussian ensembles and the quadripartite entangled states defined by Verstraete et al. in 2002. Finally, we propose a generalization of the hyperdeterminant to thermal density matrices. We observe how these polynomials are able to capture the phase transitions present in the models studied as well as a subclass of quadripartite entanglement present in the eigenstates.

Unusual area-law violation in random inhomogeneous systems

The discovery of novel entanglement patterns in quantum many-body systems is a prominent research direction in contemporary physics. Here we provide the example of a spin chain with random and inhomogeneous couplings that in the ground state exhibits a very unusual area law violation. In the clean limit, i.e., without disorder, the model is the rainbow chain and has volume law entanglement. We show that, in the presence of disorder, the entanglement entropy exhibits a power-law growth with the subsystem size, with an exponent 1/2. By employing the Strong Disorder Renormalization Group (SDRG) framework, we show that this exponent is related to the survival probability of certain random walks. The ground state of the model exhibits extended regions of short-range singlets (that we term ``bubble'' regions) as well as rare long range singlet (``rainbow'' regions). Crucially, while the probability of extended rainbow regions decays exponentially with their size, that of the bubble regions is power law. We provide strong numerical evidence for the correctness of SDRG results by exploiting the free-fermion solution of the model. Finally, we investigate the role of interactions by considering the random inhomogeneous XXZ spin chain. Within the SDRG framework and in the strong inhomogeneous limit, we show that the above area-law violation takes place only at the free-fermion point of phase diagram. This point divides two extended regions, which exhibit volume-law and area-law entanglement, respectively.

No-Go Theorem for Boson Condensation in Topologically Ordered Quantum Liquids

Certain phase transitions between topological quantum field theories (TQFT) are driven by the condensation of bosonic anyons. However, as bosons in a TQFT are themselves nontrivial collective excitations, there can be topological obstructions that prevent them from condensing. Here we formulate such an obstruction in the form of a no-go theorem. We use it to show that no condensation is possible in SO(3)$_k$ TQFTs with odd $k$. We further show that a layered theory obtained by tensoring SO(3)$_k$ TQFT with itself any integer number of times does not admit condensation transitions either. This includes (as the case $k=3$) the noncondensability of any number of layers of the Fibonacci TQFT.

Holographic codes

There exists a remarkable four-qutrit state that carries absolute maximal entanglement in all its partitions. Employing this state, we construct a tensor network that delivers a holographic many body state, the H-code, where the physical properties of the boundary determine those of the bulk. This H-code is made of an even superposition of states whose relative Hamming distances are exponentially large with the size of the boundary. This property makes H-codes natural states for a quantum memory. H-codes exist on tori of definite sizes and get classified in three different sectors characterized by the sum of their qutrits on cycles wrapped through the boundaries of the system. We construct a parent Hamiltonian for the H-code which is highly non local and finally we compute the topological entanglement entropy of the H-code.

The Riemann zeros as energy levels of a Dirac fermion in a potential built from the prime numbers in Rindler spacetime

We construct a Hamiltonian H whose discrete spectrum contains, in a certain limit, the Riemann zeros. H is derived from the action of a massless Dirac fermion living in a domain of Rindler spacetime, in 1+1 dimensions, that has a boundary given by the world line of a uniformly accelerated observer. The action contains a sum of delta function potentials that can be viewed as partially reflecting moving mirrors. An appropriate choice of the accelerations of the mirrors, provide primitive periodic orbits associated to the prime numbers $p$, whose periods, measured by the observer's clock, are log p. Acting on the chiral components of the fermion, H becomes the Berry-Keating Hamiltonian (x p + p x)/2, where x is identified with the Rindler spatial coordinate and p with the conjugate momentum. The delta function potentials give the matching conditions of the fermion wave functions on both sides of the mirrors. There is also a phase shift for the reflection of the fermions at the boundary where the observer sits. The eigenvalue problem is solved by transfer matrix methods in the limit where the reflection amplitudes become infinitesimally small. We find that for generic values of the phase shift the spectrum is a continuum, where the Riemann zeros are missing, as in the adelic Connes model. However, for some values of phase shift, related to the phase of the zeta function, the Riemann zeros appear as discrete eigenvalues immersed in the continuum. We generalize this result to the zeros of Dirichlet L-functions, associated to primitive characters, that are encoded in the reflection coefficients of the mirrors. Finally, we show that the Hamiltonian associated to the Riemann zeros belongs to class AIII, or chiral GUE, of Random Matrix Theory.

Quantum Computation of Prime Number Functions

We propose a quantum circuit that creates a pure state corresponding to the quantum superposition of all prime numbers less than 2^n, where n is the number of qubits of the register. This Prime state can be built using Grover's algorithm, whose oracle is a quantum implementation of the classical Miller-Rabin primality test. The Prime state is highly entangled, and its entanglement measures encode number theoretical functions such as the distribution of twin primes or the Chebyshev bias. This algorithm can be further combined with the quantum Fourier transform to yield an estimate of the prime counting function, more efficiently than any classical algorithm and with an error below the bound that allows for the verification of the Riemann hypothesis. We also propose a Twin Prime state to measure the number of twin primes and another state to test the Goldbach conjecture. Arithmetic properties of prime numbers are then, in principle, amenable to experimental verifications on quantum systems.

Fractional quantum Hall states in lattices: Local models and physical implementation

The fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect is one of the most striking phenomena in condensed matter physics. It is described by a simple Laughlin wavefunction and has been thoroughly studied both theoretically and experimentally. In lattice systems, however, such an effect has not been observed, there are few simple models displaying it, and only few mechanisms leading to it are known. Here we propose a new way of constructing lattice Hamiltonians with local interactions and FQH like ground states. In particular, we obtain a spin 1/2 model with a bosonic Laughlin like ground state, displaying a variety of topological features. We also demonstrate how such a model naturally emerges out of a Fermi-Hubbard like model at half filling, in which the kinetic energy part possesses bands with nonzero Chern number, and we show how this model can be implemented in an optical lattice setup with present technology.

Laughlin spin liquid states on lattices obtained from conformal field theory

We propose a set of spin system wavefunctions that are very similar to lattice versions of the Laughlin states. The wavefunction are conformal blocks of conformal field theories, and for filling factor ν=1/2 we provide a parent Hamiltonian, which is valid for any even number of spins and is at the same time a 2D generalization of the Haldane-Shastry model. We also demonstrate that the Kalmeyer-Laughlin state is reproduced as a particular case of this model. Finally, we discuss various properties of the spin states and point out several analogies to known results for the Laughlin states.
