The Riemann zeros and the cyclic Renormalization Group

We propose a consistent quantization of the Berry-Keating Hamiltonian x p, which is currently discussed in connection with the non trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. The smooth part of the Riemann counting formula of the zeros is reproduced exactly. The zeros appear, not as eigenstates, but as missing states in the spectrum, in agreement with Connes adelic approach to the Riemann hypothesis. The model is exactly solvable and renormalizable, with a cyclic Renormalization Group. These results are obtained by mapping the Berry-Keating model into the Russian doll model of superconductivity. Finally, we propose a generalization of these models in an attempt to explain the oscillatory part of the Riemann's formula.

Finite size effects in ferromagnetic spin chains and quantum corrections to classical strings

N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills operators carrying large charges are dual to semiclassical strings in AdS_5xS^5. The spectrum of anomalous dimensions of very large operators has been calculated solving the Bethe ansatz equations in the thermodynamic limit, and matched to energies of string solitons. We have considered finite size corrections to the Bethe equations, that should correspond to quantum effects on the string side.

The elementary excitations of the exactly solvable Russian doll BCS model of superconductivity

The recently proposed Russian doll BCS model provides a simple example of a many body system whose renormalization group analysis reveals the existence of limit cycles in the running coupling constants of the model. The model was first studied using RG, mean field and numerical methods showing the Russian doll scaling of the spectrum, E(n) ~ E0 exp(-l n}, where l is the RG period. In this paper we use the recently discovered exact solution of this model to study the low energy spectrum. We find that, in addition to the standard quasiparticles, the electrons can bind into Cooper pairs that are different from those forming the condensate and with higher energy. These excited Cooper pairs can be described by a quantum number Q which appears in the Bethe ansatz equation and has a RG interpretation.

Renormalization group limit-cycles and field theories for elliptic S-matrices

The renormalization group for maximally anisotropic su(2) current interactions in 2d is shown to be cyclic at one loop. The fermionized version of the model exhibits spin-charge separation of the 4-fermion interactions and has Z_4 symmetry. It is proposed that the S-matrices for these theories are the elliptic S-matrices of Zamolodchikov and Mussardo-Penati. The S-matrix parameters are related to lagrangian parameters by matching the period of the renormalization group. All models exhibit two characteristic signatures of an RG limit cycle: periodicity of the S-matrix as a function of energy and the existence of an infinite number of resonance poles satisfying Russian doll scaling.

Russian Doll Renormalization Group and Superconductivity

We show that an extension of the standard BCS Hamiltonian leads to an infinite number of condensates with different energy gaps and self-similar properties, described by a cyclic RG flow of the BCS coupling constant which returns to its original value after a finite RG time.

Kondo Effect in Carbon Nanotube Single-Electron Transistors

Recently, Coulomb blockade physics was observed at room temperature in a carbon nanotube single-electron transistor (H. W. Ch. Postma, et. al., Science 293, 76 (2001)). In this work, we suggest that these devices may be promising for studying the Kondo effect. In particular, they could allow for a detailed investigation of the 2-channel Kondo fixed point. Moreover, fabricating a similar device in a short nanotube could be promising for studying the effect of a magnetic impurity in an ultrasmall metallic grain. Experimental signatures of the Kondo effect in these systems is discussed.

Chern-Simons theory and BCS superconductivity

We study the relationship between the holomorphic unitary connection of Chern-Simons theory with temporal Wilson lines and the Richardson's exact solution of the reduced BCS Hamiltonian. We derive the integrals of motion of the BCS model, their eigenvalues and eigenvectors as a limiting case of the Chern-Simons theory.

Conformal Field Theory and the Exact Solution of the BCS Hamiltonian

We propose a connection between conformal field theory (CFT) and the exact solution and integrability of the reduced BCS model of superconductivity. The relevant CFT is given by the $SU(2)_k$-WZW model in the singular limit when the level k goes to -2. This theory has to be perturbed by an operator proportional to the inverse of the BCS coupling constant. Using the free field realization of this perturbed Wess-Zumino-Witten model, we derive the exact Richardson's wave function and the integrals of motion of the reduced BCS model in the saddle point approximation. The construction is reminiscent of the CFT approach to the Fractional Quantum Hall effect.

Recurrent Variational Approach to the Two-Leg Hubbard Ladder

We applied the Recurrent Variational Approach to the two-leg Hubbard ladder. At half-filling, our variational Ansatz was a generalization of the resonating valence bond state. At finite doping, hole pairs were allowed to move in the resonating valence bond background. The results obtained by the Recurrent Variational Approach were compared with results from Density Matrix Renormalization Group.

Dualities in Spin Ladders

We introduce a set of discrete modular transformations $T_\ell,U_\ell$ and $S_\ell$ in order to study the relationships between the different phases of the Heisenberg ladders obtained with all possible exchange coupling constants. For the 2 legged ladder we show that the $RVB$ phase is invariant under the $S_\ell$ transformation, while the Haldane phase is invariant under $U_\ell$. These two phases are related by $T_\ell$. Moreover there is a "mixed" phase, that is invariant under $T_\ell$, and which under $U_\ell$ becomes the RVB phase, while under $S_\ell$ becomes the Haldane phase. For odd ladders there exists only the $T_\ell$ transformation which, for strong coupling, maps the effective antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 chain into the spin 3/2 chain.

The Short Range RVB State of Even Spin Ladders: A Recurrent Variational Approach

Using a recursive method we construct dimer and nondimer variational ansatzs of the ground state for the two-legged ladder, and compute the number of dimer coverings, the energy density and the spin correlation functions. The number of dimer coverings are given by the Fibonacci numbers for the dimer-RVB state and their generalization for the nondimer ones. Our method relies on the recurrent relations satisfied by the overlaps of the states with different lengths, which can be solved using generating functions. The recurrent relation method is applicable to other short range systems. Based on our results we make a conjecture about the bond amplitudes of the 2-leg ladder.

Low-Energy Properties of Antiferromagnetic Spin-1/2 Heisenberg Ladders with an Odd Number of Legs

An effective low-energy description for multi-leg spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladders with an odd number of legs is proposed. Using a newly developed Monte Carlo loop algorithm and exact diagonalization techniques, the uniform and staggered magnetic susceptibility and the entropy are calculated for ladders with 1, 3, and 5 legs. These systems show a low-temperature scaling behavior similar to spin-1/2 chains with longer ranged unfrustrated exchange interactions. The spinon velocity does not change as the number of legs increases, but the energy scale parameter decreases markedly.

The Non Linear Sigma Model and Spin Ladders

The well known Haldane map from spin chains into the $O(3)$ non linear sigma model is generalized to the case of spin ladders. This map allows us to explain the different qualitative behaviour between even and odd ladders, exactly in the same way it explains the difference between integer and half-integer spin chains. Namely, for even ladders the topological term in the sigma model action is absent, while for odd ladders the $θ$ parameter, which multiplies the topological term, is equal to $2 πS$, where $S$ is the spin of the ladder. Hence even ladders should have a dynamically generated spin gap, while odd ladders with half-integer spin should stay gapless, and physically equivalent to a perturbed $SU(2)_1$ Wess-Zumino -Witten model in the infrared regime. We also derive some consequences from the dependence of the sigma model coupling constant on the ladder Heisenberg couplings constants.

A Rotating-Valence-Bond scenario for the 2D Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Model

We propose that the valence bonds forming the ground state of the 2D-AF Heisenberg model on a square lattice may rotate under the effect of the antiferromagnetic background. To test this idea we apply a real space renormalization group approach to construct a rotating-valence-bond ground state anstaz. Our results are analytic and valid for any value of the spin S of the AF-magnet, which allow us to perfom semiclassical expansions of the energy and the staggered magnetization.

The Correlated Block Renormalization Group

We formulate the standard real-space renormalization group method in a way which takes into account the correlation between blocks. This is achieved in a dynamical way by means of operators which reflect the influence on a given block of its neighbours. We illustrate our method in the example of the tight-binding model in 1D and 2D for various types of boundary conditions.

The Renormalization Group Method and Quantum Groups: the postman always rings twice

We review some of our recent results concerning the relationship between the Real-Space Renormalization Group method and Quantum Groups. We show this relation by applying real-space RG methods to study two quantum group invariant Hamiltonians, that of the XXZ model and the Ising model in a transverse field (ITF) defined in an open chain with appropriate boundary terms. The quantum group symmetry is preserved under the RG transformation except for the appearence of a quantum group anomalous term which vanishes in the classical case. This is called {\em the quantum group anomaly}. We derive the new qRG equations for the XXZ model and show that the RG-flow diagram obtained in this fashion exhibits the correct line of critical points that the exact model has. In the ITF model the qRG-flow equations coincide with the tensor product decomposition of cyclic irreps of $SU_q(2)$ with $q^4=1$.

Analytic Formulations of the Density Matrix Renormalization Group

We present two new analytic formulations of the Density Matrix Renormalization Group Method. In these formulations we combine the block renormalization group (BRG) procedure with Variational and Fokker-Planck methods. The BRG method is used to reduce the lattice size while the latter are used to construct approximate target states to compute the block density matrix. We apply our DMRG methods to the Ising Model in a transverse field (ITF model) and compute several of its critical properties which are then compared with the old BRG results.

The Role of Boundary Conditions in the Real-Space Renormalization Group

We show that the failure of the real-space RG method in the 1D tight-binding model is not intrinsic to the method as considered so far but depends on the choice of boundary conditions. For fixed BC's the failure does happen. For free BC's we present a new analytical block RG-method which gives the exact ground state of the model and the correct $1/N^2$-law for the energy of the first excited state in the large $N$(size)-limit. We also give a reconstruction method for the wave-functions of the excited states.
