Beyond $\mathcal{R}(D^{(*)})$ with the general 2HDM-III for $b\to cτν$

We review the parameter regions allowed by measurements of $\mathcal{R}(D^{(*)})$ and by a theoretical limit on ${\cal B}(B_{c}\toτν)$ in terms of generic scalar and pseudoscalar new physics couplings, $g_s$ and $g_p$. We then use these regions as constraints to predict the ranges for additional observables in $b\to cτν$ including the differential decay distributions $dΓ/dq^{2}$; the ratios $\mathcal{R}(J/ψ)$ and $\mathcal{R}(Λ_{c})$; and the tau-lepton polarisation in $B\to D^{(\star)}τν$, with emphasis on the CP violating normal polarisation. Finally we map the allowed regions in $g_s$ and $g_p$ into the parameters of four versions of the Yukawa couplings of the general 2HDM-III model. We find that the model is still viable but could be ruled out by a confirmation of a large $\mathcal{R}(J/ψ)$.

Dynamical projections for the visualization of PDFSense data

A recent paper on visualizing the sensitivity of hadronic experiments to nucleon structure [1] introduces the tool PDFSense which defines measures to allow the user to judge the sensitivity of PDF fits to a given experiment. The sensitivity is characterized by high-dimensional data residuals that are visualized in a 3-d subspace of the 10 first principal components or using t-SNE [2]. We show how a tour, a dynamic visualisation of high dimensional data, can extend this tool beyond 3-d relationships. This approach enables resolving structure orthogonal to the 2-d viewing plane used so far, and hence finer tuned assessment of the sensitivity.

Lepton-flavour-violating gluonic operators: constraints from the LHC and low energy experiments

Effective operators provide a model-independent description of physics beyond the stan- dard model that is particularly useful given the absence of any signs of new physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We recast previous LHC analyses to set limits on lepton-flavour-violating gluonic effective operators of dimension 8 and compare our results to existing limits from low-energy precision experiments. Current LHC data constrains the scale $Λ$ of the effective operators to be larger than $Λ\gtrsim 0.5 - 1.6$ TeV depending on the flavour and thus provides the most stringent limit for all operators apart from parity-conserving operators of the form $GG\barμP_{L,R} e$, where $μ- e$ conversion in nuclei poses the most stringent constraint.

Lepton universality violation and right-handed currents in $b \to c τν$

We consider the recent LHCb result for $B_c\to J/ψτν$ in conjunction with the existing anomalies in $R(D)$ and $R(D^\star)$ within the framework of a right-handed current with enhanced couplings to the third generation. The model predicts a linear relation between the observables and their SM values in terms of two combinations of parameters. The strong constraints from $b\to s γ$ on $W-W^\prime$ mixing effectively remove one of the combinations of parameters resulting in an approximate proportionality between all three observables and their SM values. To accommodate the current averages for $R(D)$ and $R(D^\star)$, the $W^\prime$ mass should be near 1 TeV, and possibly accessible to direct searches at the LHC. In this scenario we find that $R(J/ψ)$ is enhanced by about 20\% with respect to its SM value and about 1.5$σ$ below the central value of the LHCb measurement. The predicted $dΓ/dq^2$ distribution for $B\to D(D^\star) τν$ is in agreement with the measurement and the model satisfies the constraint from the $B_c$ lifetime.

CP violating anomalous couplings in $W$ jet production at the LHC

T-odd correlations in $Wj$ production at the LHC have been studied recently as a way to measure a phase produced by QCD at NLO by Frederix et. al. That study found that the induced asymmetry could be observed with 20 fb$^{-1}$ of 8 TeV data. These T-odd asymmetries can also be induced by CP violating new physics interfering with the SM at LO. In this paper we study this possibility using effective Lagrangians to describe the new physics. We find that the leading contribution arises at dimension eight, and that it necessarily introduces flavor changing neutral currents as well. We discuss the constraints that can be placed on the flavor structure of the new physics operator from studies of FCNC in kaon and B meson decays and then compare the T-odd correlations in $Wj$ induced by CP violating new physics to those induced by QCD at NLO. We quantify the level at which these couplings can be probed at the LHC, and find that they will not affect a measurement of the NLO QCD phases.

LHC constraints on color octet scalars

We extract constraints on the parameter space of the MW model by comparing the cross-sections for dijet, top-pair, dijet-pair, $t\bar t t \bar t$ and $b\bar b b \bar b$ productions at the LHC with the strongest available experimental limits from ATLAS or CMS at 8 or 13 TeV. Overall we find that masses below 1 TeV have not been excluded for color octet scalars as it is often claimed in the literature. The constraints that can be placed on coupling constants are typically weaker than those from existing theoretical considerations, with the exception of the parameter $η_D$.

Are the B-anomalies evidence for heavy neutrinos?

The existing anomalies appearing in decays of the form $b\to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ constitute a possible hint for new physics. We point out that modifications to the SM results due to heavy neutrinos could account for the observed deviations while satisfying existing constraints from lepton flavor violating processes. The required mixing angle, however, is an order of magnitude larger than suggested by recent global fits to lepton flavor conserving processes. We frame our discussion in terms of a Type-I seesaw model, but it can be made more general.

Validity of two Higgs doublet models with a scalar color octet up to a high energy scale

We have recently studied theoretical constraints on the parameters of a 2HDM augmented with a color-octet scalar. In this paper we consider the consequences of requiring the model to remain valid up to very high energy scales, such as the GUT scale. The acceptable region of parameter space is reduced when one insists on vacuum stability, perturbative unitarity and the absence of Landau poles below a given scale. As the scale to which we require the model to be valid is increased, the acceptable region of parameter space for the 2HDM sector is reduced in such a way that it approaches the alignment limit, $\cos(β-α)\to 0$, and the masses of $H^0$, $A$ and $H^\pm$ are pushed closer to each other. The parameters of the color octet sector are also restricted to an increasingly smaller region.

Top and bottom tensor couplings from a color octet scalar

We compute the one-loop contributions from a color octet scalar to the tensor anomalous couplings of top and bottom quarks to gluons, photons and W bosons. We use known constraints on the parameters of the model to compare the predicted size of these couplings with existing phenomenological constraints.

Two Higgs doublet models augmented by a scalar color octet

The LHC is now studying in detail the couplings of the Higgs boson in order to determine if there is new physics. Many recent studies have examined the available fits to Higgs couplings from the perspective of constraining two Higgs doublet models (2HDM). In this paper we extend those studies to include constraints on the one loop couplings of the Higgs to gluons and photons. These couplings are particularly sensitive to the existence of new colored particles that are hard to detect otherwise and we use them to constrain a 2HDM augmented with a color-octet scalar, a possibility motivated by minimal flavor violation. We first study theoretical constraints on this model and then compare them with LHC measurements.

Colour Octet Extension of 2HDM

In this talk we consider some aspects of the Manohar-Wise extension of the SM with a colour-octet electroweak-doublet scalar applied to 2HDM. We present theoretical constraints on the parameters of this extension to both the SM and the 2HDM and discuss related phenomenology at LHC.

Yukawa sector for LFV in $h\to μτ$ and CP violation in $h\to ττ$

The Higgs boson discovered at the LHC opened a new chapter for particle physics. Its properties need to be studied in detail to distinguish a purely standard model (SM) Higgs boson from one of many scalars in an enlarged Higgs sector. The CMS collaboration has reported a possible lepton flavor violating (LFV) signal $h\toμτ$, which if confirmed, implies that the Higgs sector is larger than in the SM. New physics responsible for this type of decay may, in general, also introduce other observable effects such as charge-parity (CP) violation in $h\to ττ$. We study two types of models that single out the third generation and can induce large $h \to μτ$ rates with different consequences for CP violation in $h \to ττ$. Predictions for the size of the CP violating couplings require knowledge of the lepton Yukawa matrices and we discuss this in the context of two different textures considering all existing constraints.

CP violation in $h\to ττ$ and LFV $h\to μτ$

The CMS collaboration has reported a possible lepton flavour violating (LFV) signal $h\toμτ$. Whereas this does not happen in the standard model (SM), we point out that new physics responsible for this type of decay would, in general, also produce charge-parity (CP) violation in $h\to ττ$. We estimate the size of this effect in a model independent manner and find that a large asymmetry, of order 25\%, is allowed by current constraints.

T-odd correlations from top-quark CEDM in lepton plus jets top-pair events

There exist several recent studies of the top-quark CEDM in the context of searching for CP violating signals in top-quark pair production at the LHC. Most of these studies constrain the CEDM either from deviations in the top-pair cross section from its standard model value, or from T-odd asymmetries in the dimuon channel. Motivated by ATLAS and CMS interest, we extend the study of T-odd asymmetries to the lepton plus jets channel. At the parton level, using MadGraph, we identify the most promising signals and their statistical sensitivity. We find that the signals with larger sensitivity to the CEDM require distinguishing between $b$ and $\bar{b}$ jets and propose a simple way to address this.

A $Z^\prime$ Model for $b\to s \ell\bar \ell$ Flavour Anomalies

We study the implications of flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNC's) in a model with the $SU(2)_l\times SU(2)_h\times U(1)_Y$ electroweak gauge symmetry for several anomalies appearing in $b\to s \ell\bar \ell$ induced $B$ decays in LHCb data. In this model, $SU(2)_l$ and $SU(2)_h$ govern the left-handed fermions in the first two generations and the third generation, respectively. The physical $Z$ and $Z'$ generate the $b\to s$ transition at tree level, leading to additional contributions to the $b \to s$ semileptonic operators ${\cal O}_{9,10}$. We find that although $B_s$-$\bar B_s$ mixing constrains the parameters severely, the model can produce values of ${\cal C}^{\rm NP}_{9,10}$ in the range determined by Descotes-Genon {\it et. al.} in Ref.~\cite{Descotes-Genon:2015uva} for this scenario to improve the global fit of observables in decays induced by the $b\to s μ\bar μ$ transition. The $Z'$ boson in this model also generates tree-level FCNC's for the leptonic interactions that can accommodate the experimental central value of $R_K = {\cal B}(B\to K μ\bar μ)/{\cal B}(B\to K e\bar e)=0.75$. In this case, the model predicts sizeable branching ratios for $B\to K e \bar τ$, $B\to K τ\bar e$, and an enhancement of $B\to K τ\bar τ$ with respect to its SM value.

Spin correlations and new physics in $τ$-lepton decays at the LHC

We use spin correlations to constrain anomalous $τ$-lepton couplings at the LHC including its anomalous magnetic moment, electric dipole moment and weak dipole moments. Single spin correlations are ideal to probe interference terms between the SM and new dipole-type couplings as they are not suppressed by the $τ$-lepton mass. Double spin asymmetries give rise to $T$-odd correlations useful to probe $CP$ violation purely within the new physics amplitudes, as their appearance from interference with the SM is suppressed by $m_τ$. We compare our constraints to those obtained earlier on the basis of deviations from the Drell-Yan cross-section.

Higgs production constraints on anomalous fermion couplings

Certain anomalous fermion-gauge boson couplings, such as the flavor diagonal anomalous color magnetic (CMDM) and color electric (CEDM) dipole moments of quarks are not fully gauge invariant under the SM. Restoring gauge invariance with an elementary Higgs doublet implies that they also contribute to Higgs boson production at the LHC and we study the corresponding constraints that can be placed on them. In a similar manner we study the constraints that can be placed on the $τ$-lepton anomalous magnetic moment, electric dipole moment, weak dipole moments, and dimension eight gluonic couplings at the LHC.

Constraining $τ$-lepton dipole moments and gluon couplings at the LHC

We study the constraints that can be placed on anomalous $τ$-lepton couplings at the LHC. We use an effective Lagrangian description for physics beyond the standard model which contains the $τ$-lepton anomalous magnetic moment, electric dipole moment and weak dipole moments in two operators of dimension six. We include in our study two additional operators of dimension eight that directly couple the $τ$-leptons to gluons and are therefore enhanced at the LHC. We consider the two main effects from these couplings: modifications to the Drell-Yan cross-section and to the $τ$-lepton pair production in association with a Higgs boson. We find that a measurement of the former at the 14% level can produce constraints comparable to existing ones for the anomalous dipole couplings; and that a bound on the latter at a sensitivity level of $500\ σ_{SM}$ or better would produce the best constraint on the $τ$-gluonic couplings.
