Unified description of hadron-photon and hadron-meson scattering in the Dyson-Schwinger approach

We derive the expression for the nonperturbative coupling of a hadron to two external currents from its underlying structure in QCD. Microscopically, the action of each current is resolved to a coupling with dressed quarks. The Lorentz structure of the currents is arbitrary and thereby allows to describe the hadron's interaction with photons as well as mesons in the same framework. We analyze the ingredients of the resulting four-point functions and explore their potential to describe a variety of processes relevant in experiments. Possible applications include Compton scattering, the study of two-photon effects in hadron form factors, pion photo- and electroproduction on a nucleon, nucleon-pion or pion-pion scattering.

Delta and Omega masses in a three-quark covariant Faddeev approach

We present the solution of the Poincare-covariant Faddeev equation for the Delta(1232) and Omega(1672) baryons. The covariant structure of the corresponding baryon amplitudes and their decomposition in terms of internal spin and orbital angular momentum is explicitly derived. The interaction kernel is truncated to a rainbow-ladder dressed-gluon exchange such that chiral symmetry and its dynamical breaking are correctly implemented. The resulting physical masses agree reasonably with experiment and their evolution with the pion mass compares favorably with lattice calculations. Evidence for the non-sphericity of the Delta-resonance is discussed as well.

Hadronic decays of mesons and baryons in the Dyson-Schwinger approach

We study hadronic decays of mesons and baryons in the context of the Dyson-Schwinger equations of QCD. Starting from a well-established effective interaction in rainbow-ladder truncation, we consistently calculate all ingredients of the appropriate decay diagrams. The resulting strong couplings are presented as functions of the quark mass from the chiral limit up to the respective decay thresholds. In particular, we investigate the ρππand for the first time the ΔN πtransitions. Both meson and baryon results compare well to available lattice QCD results as well as experimental data and present the first step towards a comprehensive covariant study of hadron resonances in the Dyson-Schwinger approach.

Nucleon electromagnetic form factors from the covariant Faddeev equation

We compute the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon in the Poincare-covariant Faddeev framework based on the Dyson-Schwinger equations of QCD. The general expression for a baryon's electromagnetic current in terms of three interacting dressed quarks is derived. Upon employing a rainbow-ladder gluon-exchange kernel for the quark-quark interaction, the nucleon's Faddeev amplitude and electromagnetic form factors are computed without any further truncations or model assumptions. The form factor results show clear evidence of missing pion-cloud effects below a photon momentum transfer of ~2 GeV^2 and in the chiral region whereas they agree well with experimental data at higher photon momenta. Thus, the approach reflects the properties of the nucleon's quark core.

On baryon properties from a covariant Faddeev approach

The Poincare-covariant Faddeev equation and its solution in rainbow-ladder truncation, i.e., with a generalized gluon exchange as irreducible two-particle-interaction, is presented. The covariant decomposition of baryon amplitudes, representing relativistic three-quark states, is discussed and explicitly given for the Delta-baryon. The calculated Delta mass compares favourably with the experimental one.

Delta and Omega electromagnetic form factors in a Dyson-Schwinger/Bethe-Salpeter approach

We investigate the electromagnetic form factors of the Delta and the Omega baryons within the Poincare-covariant framework of Dyson-Schwinger and Bethe-Salpeter equations. The three-quark core contributions of the form factors are evaluated by employing a quark-diquark approximation. We use a consistent setup for the quark-gluon dressing, the quark-quark bound-state kernel and the quark-photon interaction. Our predictions for the multipole form factors are compatible with available experimental data and quark-model estimates. The current-quark mass evolution of the static electromagnetic properties agrees with results provided by lattice calculations.

Hadron properties from QCD bound-state equations: A status report

Employing an approach based on the Green functions of Landau-gauge QCD, some selected results from a calculation of meson and baryon properties are presented. A rainbow-ladder truncation to the quark Dyson-Schwinger equation is used to arrive at a unified description of mesons and baryons by solving Bethe-Salpeter and covariant Faddeev equations, respectively.

Hadron properties from QCD bound-state equations

This thesis presents an investigation of meson and baryon properties in the framework of covariant bound-state equations based on the Dyson-Schwinger equations of QCD. Pion and rho-meson, diquark, nucleon and delta-baryon masses are obtained as self-consistent solutions of the respective equations for $q\bar{q}$, $qq$, $qqq$ and $q(qq)$ systems. The common parenthesis is given by a rainbow-ladder truncation in the quark-(anti-)quark channel. It includes an effective quark-gluon coupling as the only phenomenological input and inherent link in the calculation of meson and baryon observables. Results for hadron masses and the pion's and nucleon's static electromagnetic properties as a function of a self-consistently calculated pion mass are presented and compared to lattice results and their chiral extrapolations. The evolution of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors with larger photon momentum is investigated. The impact of further contributions beyond rainbow-ladder, e.g. pionic corrections, and possible future applications are discussed.

Meson and nucleon properties from Dyson-Schwinger QCD

We present selected results from a calculation of meson and nucleon observables in a Green-function approach. A rainbow-ladder truncation of QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations is used to solve the respective meson, diquark and quark-diquark Bethe-Salpeter equations. It allows for a simultaneous description of meson and nucleon masses and electromagnetic properties from an effective quark-gluon interaction. The results describe a hadronic quark core which agrees with lattice data for heavy quarks whereas pion-cloud effects are missing towards the chiral limit. The neutron's Dirac form factor is negative due to the presence of axial-vector diquark correlations.
