Spin waves in the bilayer van der Waals magnet CrSBr

We derive analytical expressions for the spin wave frequencies and precession amplitudes in monolayer and antiferromagnetically coupled bilayer CrSBr under in-plane external magnetic fields. The analysis covers the antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic, and canted phases, demonstrating that the spin wave frequencies in all phases are tunable by the applied magnetic field. We discuss the roles of intra- and interlayer exchange interactions, triaxial anisotropy, and intralayer dynamic dipolar fields in controlling the magnetization dynamics.

Electrical Injection and Transport of Coherent Magnons in Non-Collinear Antiferromagnets

Non-collinear antiferromagnets (nAFMs) with a small net magnetic moment offer new opportunities for ultrafast spintronic devices, owing to unique physical properties. While in ferromagnets and collinear AFMs the spin current polarization is locked to the magnetization $\hat{\mathbf{m}}$ and Néel vector $\hat{\mathbf{n}}$ directions, we predict that magnon spin currents injected by metal contacts into nAFMs can be polarized with both $\hat{\mathbf{n}}$ and $\hat{\mathbf{m}}$ components when carried by a coherent superposition of magnon eigenstates. The spin injection efficiency is governed by an interface spin conductance tensor that depends on the non-collinear magnetic texture. While the $\hat{\mathbf{m}}$-component diffuses freely into the nAFM, the $\hat{\mathbf{n}}$-component oscillates as a function of distance from the injector and applied magnetic field, analogous to the Hanle effect of electron spins in metals. Our findings reveal the potential of nAFMs as platforms for the study of tensorial coherent spin transport.

Magnon-Driven Magnetothermal Transport in Magnetic Multilayers

All-solid-state nanoscale devices capable of efficiently controlling a heat flow are crucial for advanced thermal management technologies. Here we predict a magnon-driven magnetothermal resistance (mMTR) effect in multilayers of ferromagnets and normal metals, i.e. a thermal resistance that varies when switching between parallel and antiparallel magnetization orientations of the ferromagnetic layers, even in the absence of conduction electrons in the ferromagnets. The mMTR arises from an interfacial temperature drop caused by magnon spin accumulations and can be engineered by the layer thicknesses, spin diffusion lengths, and spin conductances. The mMTR predicted here enables magnetothermal switching in insulator-based systems; we already predict large mMTR ratios up to 40$\%$ for superlattices of the electrically insulating magnet yttrium iron garnet and elemental metals.

Spin-orbit locking of magnons with localized microwave fields

We address the photonic spin-orbit coupling known from nano-optics and plasmonics in the microwave regime. The spin $\mathbf{S}$ and momentum $\mathbf{q}$ of microwaves emitted by an excited magnetic particle are locked by $\mathbf{q}\cdot\mathbf{S}=0$ with a fixed chirality $\hat{\mathbf{n}}\cdot(\hat{\bf S}\times\hat{\bf q})=1$ when evanescent along $\hat{\mathbf{n}}\perp {\bf q}$. This field excites magnons in a nearby magnetic film in the form of directional beams that rotate with the magnetization direction. The exchange of these magnons between two distant nanomagnets leads to a highly tunable strong coupling and entangles their excited states.

Effect of nonlinear magnon interactions on the stochastic magnetization switching

Telegraph noise caused by frequent switching of the magnetization in small magnetic devices has become a useful resource for probabilistic computing. Conventional theories have been based on a linearization of the fluctuations at the extrema of the magnetic free energy. We show theoretically that the non-linearities, specifically four-magnon scatterings, reduce the equilibrium fluctuation amplitude of the magnetization as well as the switching frequencies between local minima via the decay of the homogeneous Kittel mode into two spin waves with opposite momenta. Selectively suppressing the effective temperature of the finite-k spin waves, or reducing the radius of a thin magnetic disk enhance the switching frequency and improve performance of magnetic tunnel junctions in probabilistic computing applications.

Chiral-Damping-Enhanced Magnon Transmission

The inevitable Gilbert damping in magnetization dynamics is usually regarded as detrimental to spin transport. Here we apply a general feature of chiral non-Hermitian dynamics to a ferromagnetic-insulator--normal-metal heterostructure to show that the strong momentum dependence and chirality of the eddy-current-induced damping also causes beneficial scattering properties: A potential barrier that reflects magnon wave packets becomes unidirectionally transparent in the presence of a metallic cap layer. Passive magnon gates that turn presumably harmful dissipation into useful functionalities should be useful for future quantum magnonic devices.

Harnessing Interlayer Magnetic Coupling for Efficient, Field-Free Current-Induced Magnetization Switching in a Magnetic Insulator

Owing to the unique features of low Gilbert damping, long spin-diffusion lengths and zero Ohmic losses, magnetic insulators are promising candidate materials for next-generation spintronic applications. However, due to the localized magnetic moments and the complex metal-oxide interface between magnetic insulators and heavy metals, spin-functional Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions or spin Hall and Edelstein effects are weak, which diminishes the performance of these typical building blocks for spintronic devices. Here, we exploit the exchange coupling between metallic and insulating magnets for efficient electrical manipulation of heavy metal/magnetic insulator heterostructures. By inserting a thin Co layer, we enhance the spin-orbit torque efficiency by more than 20 times, which significantly reduces the switching current density. Moreover, we demonstrate field-free current-induced magnetization switching caused by a symmetry-breaking non-collinear magnetic texture. Our work launches magnetic insulators as an alternative platform for low-power spintronic devices.

Role of Disorder in the Intrinsic Orbital Hall Effect

We investigate the effect of random defect scattering on the orbital Hall effect by solving a quantum Boltzmann equation. Depending on the specific orbital textures, diffuse scattering by an \emph{arbitrarily} weak disorder can affect and even fully suppress an intrinsic orbital Hall current. From the results for a simple model, we infer that disorder can play an important role in orbitronics in general.

Nonlinear enhancement of coherent magnetization dynamics

Magnets are interesting materials for classical and quantum information technologies. However, the short decoherence and dephasing times that determine the scale and speed of information networks, severely limit the appeal of employing the ferromagnetic resonance. Here we show that the lifetime and coherence of the uniform Kittel mode can be enhanced by 3-magnon interaction-induced mixing with the long-lived magnons at the minima of the dispersion relation. Analytical and numerical calculations based on this model explain recent experimental results and predict experimental signatures of quantum coherence.

Chirality Enables Thermal Magnon Transistors

We report a theory of thermal spin pumping into proximity magnets under a transverse-bias-driven heat flow of magnons in magnetic films when the dipolar coupling to the magnetic gate is tuned to be "chiral". While there is no rectification of the magnon current in the film, we predict that chirality diverts a large percentage (50$\%$ for perfect chirality) of it into the gate. This transverse thermal spin pumping effect can be controlled by rotating the film magnetization and may help manage the heat flow in future magnonic circuits.

Electric Analog of Magnons in Order-Disorder Ferroelectrics

We analyze the ``ferron" excitations in order-disorder ferroelectrics by a microscopic pseudo-spin model. We demonstrate that analogous to magnons, the quanta of spin waves in magnetic materials, ferrons carry both static and oscillating electric dipole moments, exhibit a Stark effect, and may be parametrically excited by THz radiation. The anti-crossing gap of the ferron-photon hybrid depends strongly on propagation direction and an applied static electric field. We predict ferron diffusion lengths that can reach centimeters, which implies efficient transport of electric polarization by temperature gradients. These properties suggest that ferroelectric materials may be useful for information technology beyond data storage applications.

Long distance magnon transport in the van der Waals antiferromagnet CrPS$_4$

We demonstrate the potential of van der Waals magnets for spintronic applications by reporting long-distance magnon spin transport in the electrically insulating antiferromagnet chromium thiophosphate (CrPS$_4$) with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We inject and detect magnon spins non-locally by Pt contacts and monitor the non-local resistance as a function of an in-plane magnetic field up to 7 Tesla. We observe a non-local resistance over distances up to at least a micron below the Neel temperature (T$_{\rm N}$ = 38 Kelvin) close to magnetic field strengths that saturate the sublattice magnetizations.

Chirality as Generalized Spin-Orbit Interaction in Spintronics

This review focuses on the chirality observed in the excited states of the magnetic order, dielectrics, and conductors that hold transverse spins when they are evanescent. Even without any relativistic effect, the transverse spin of the evanescent waves are locked to the momentum and the surface normal of their propagation plane. This chirality thereby acts as a generalized spin-orbit interaction, which leads to the discovery of various chiral interactions between magnetic, phononic, electronic, photonic, and plasmonic excitations in spintronics that mediate the excitation of quasiparticles into a single direction, leading to phenomena such as chiral spin and phonon pumping, chiral spin Seebeck, spin skin, magnonic trap, magnon Doppler, and spin diode effects. Intriguing analogies with electric counterparts in the nano-optics and plasmonics exist. After a brief review of the concepts of chirality that characterize the ground state chiral magnetic textures and chirally coupled magnets in spintronics, we turn to the chiral phenomena of excited states. We present a unified electrodynamic picture for dynamical chirality in spintronics in terms of generalized spin-orbit interaction and compare it with that in nano-optics and plasmonics. Based on the general theory, we subsequently review the theoretical progress and experimental evidence of chiral interaction, as well as the near-field transfer of the transverse spins, between various excitations in magnetic, photonic, electronic and phononic nanostructures at GHz time scales. We provide a perspective for future research before concluding this article.

Experimental generation of circulating cavity magnon polaritons

We experimentally realize circularly polarised unidirectional cavity magnon polaritons in a torus-shaped microwave cavity loaded by a small magnetic sphere. At special positions the clockwise and counterclockwise modes are circularly polarized, such that only one of them couples to the magnet, which breaks the mode degeneracy. We reveal the chiral nature of the spectral energy and angular momentum flow by observing and modelling non-reciprocities of the microwave scattering matrix.

Nonlinear magnon polaritons

We experimentally and theoretically demonstrate that nonlinear spin-wave interactions suppress the hybrid magnon-photon quasiparticle or "magnon polariton" in microwave spectra of an yttrium iron garnet film detected by an on-chip split-ring resonator. We observe a strong coupling between the Kittel and microwave cavity modes in terms of an avoided crossing as a function of magnetic fields at low microwave input powers, but a complete closing of the gap at high powers. The experimental results are well explained by a theoretical model including the three-magnon decay of the Kittel magnon into spin waves. The gap closure originates from the saturation of the ferromagnetic resonance above the Suhl instability threshold by a coherent back reaction from the spin waves.

Nonlocal detection of interlayer three-magnon coupling

A leading nonlinear effect in magnonics is the interaction that splits a high-frequency magnon into two low-frequency ones with conserved linear momentum. Here, we report experimental observation of nonlocal three-magnon scattering between spatially separated magnetic systems, viz. a CoFeB nanowire and an yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin film. Above a certain threshold power of an applied microwave field, a CoFeB Kittel magnon splits into a pair of counter-propagating YIG magnons that induce voltage signals in Pt electrodes on each side, in excellent agreement with model calculations based on the interlayer dipolar interaction. The excited YIG magnon pairs reside mainly in the first excited (n=1) perpdendicular standing spin-wave mode. With increasing power, the n=1 magnons successively scatter into nodeless (n=0) magnons through a four-magnon process. Our results help to assess non-local scattering processes in magnonic circuits that may enable quantum entanglement between distant magnons for quantum information applications.

Efficient Gating of Magnons by Proximity Superconductors

Electrostatic gating confines and controls the transport of electrons in integrated circuits. Magnons, the quanta of spin waves of the magnetic order, are promising alternative information carriers, but difficult to gate. Here we report that superconducting strips on top of thin magnetic films can totally reflect magnons by its diamagnetic response to the magnon stray fields. The induced large frequency shifts unidirectionally blocks the magnons propagating normal to the magnetization. Two superconducting gates parallel to the magnetization create a magnonic cavity. The option to gate coherent magnons adds functionalities to magnonic devices, such as reprogrammable logical devices and increased couplings to other degrees of freedom.

The sliding phase transition in ferroelectric van der Waals bilayers

We address the sliding thermodynamics of van der Waals-bonded bilayers by the continuum elasticity theory. We attribute the robustness of the ferroelectricity recently observed in h-BN and WTe2 bilayers to large monolayer in-plane stiffness. We compute the electric susceptibility and specific heat in the mean-field self-consistent phonon approximation. We compare critical temperatures and electric switching fields with the observations.
