Oriented Three-Dimensional Magnetic Biskyrmion in MnNiGa Bulk Crystals

A biskyrmion consists of two bound, topologically stable skyrmion spin textures. These coffee-bean-shaped objects have been observed in real-space in thin plates using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (LTEM). From LTEM imaging alone, it is not clear whether biskyrmions are surface-confined objects, or, analogously to skyrmions in non-centrosymmetric helimagnets, three-dimensional tube-like structures in bulk sample. Here, we investigate the biskyrmion form factor in single- and polycrystalline MnNiGa samples using small angle neutron scattering (SANS). We find that biskyrmions are not long-range ordered, not even in single-crystals. Surprisingly all of the disordered biskyrmions have their in-plane symmetry axis aligned along certain directions, governed by the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. This anisotropic nature of biskyrmions may be further exploited to encode information.

Resonant x-ray diffraction from chiral electric-polarization structures

Heterostructures of PbTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattices have shown the formation of "polar vortices", in which a continuous rotation of ferroelectric polarization spontaneously forms. Recently, Shafer {\it{et al.}} [Proc.\ Natl.\ Acad.\ Sci.\ (PNAS) {\bf{115}}, 915 (2018)] reported strong {\it{non-magnetic}} circular dichroism (CD) in resonant soft x-ray diffraction at the Ti $L_3$ edge from such superlattices. The authors ascribe the CD to the chiral rotation of a polar vector. However, a polar vector is invisible to the parity-even electric-dipole transition which governs absorption in the soft x-ray region. A realistic, non-magnetic explanation of the observed effect is found in Templeton-Templeton scattering. Following this route, the origin of the CD in Bragg diffraction is shown by us to be the chiral array of charge quadrupole moments that forms in these heterostructures. While there is no charge quadrupole moment in the spherically symmetric $3d^0$ valence state of Ti$^{4+}$, the excited state $2p_{3/2}3d(t_{2g})$ at the Ti $L_3$ resonance is known to have a quadrupole moment. Our expressions for intensities of satellite Bragg spots in resonance-enhanced diffraction of circularly polarized x-rays, including their harmonic content, account for all observations reported by Shafer {\it{et al.}} We predict both intensities of Bragg spots for the second harmonic of a chiral superlattice and circular polarization created from unpolarized x-rays, in order that our successful explanation of existing diffraction data can be further scrutinized through renewed experimental investigations. The increased understanding of chiral dipole arrangements could open the door to switchable optical polarization.

U 5$f$ crystal-field ground state of UO$_2$ probed by directional dichroism in nonresonant inelastic x-ray scattering

Nonresonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS) has been performed on single crystals of UO$_2$ to study the direction dependence of higher-order-multipole scattering from the uranium $O_{4,5}$ edges (90--110 eV). By comparing the experimental results with theoretical calculations the symmetry of the ground state is confirmed directly as the crystal-field (CF) $Γ_5$ triplet state within the $J$ = 4 manifold. The results also demonstrate that the directional dichroism of the NIXS spectra is sensitive to the CF strength and establish NIXS as a tool for probing CF interactions quantitatively.

Long range antiferromagnetic order of formally non-magnetic Eu$^{3+}$ Van Vleck ions observed in multiferroic Eu$_{1-x}$Y$_{x}$MnO$_3$

We report on resonant magnetic x-ray scattering and absorption spectroscopy studies of exchange-coupled antiferromagnetic ordering of Eu$^{3+}$ magnetic moments in multiferroic Eu$_{1-x}$Y$_{x}$MnO$_3$ in the absence of an external magnetic field. The observed resonant spectrum is characteristic of a magnetically ordered $^7F_1$ state that mirrors the Mn magnetic ordering, due to exchange coupling between the Eu $4f$ and Mn $3d$ spins. This is the first observation of long range magnetic order generated by exchange coupling of magnetic moments of formally non-magnetic Van Vleck ions, which is a step further towards the realization of exotic phases induced by exchange coupling in systems entirely composed of non-magnetic ions.

Enhancing Magnetic Ordering in Cr-doped Bi2Se3 using High-TC Ferrimagnetic Insulator

We report a study of enhancing the magnetic ordering in a model magnetically doped topological insulator (TI), Bi2-xCrxSe3, via the proximity effect using a high-TC ferrimagnetic insulator Y3Fe5O12. The FMI provides the TI with a source of exchange interaction yet without removing the nontrivial surface state. By performing the elemental specific X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements, we have unequivocally observed an enhanced TC of 50 K in this magnetically doped TI/FMI heterostructure. We have also found a larger (6.6 nm at 30 K) but faster decreasing (by 80% from 30 K to 50 K) penetration depth compared to that of diluted ferromagnetic semiconductors (DMSs), which could indicate a novel mechanism for the interaction between FMIs and the nontrivial TIs surface.

Observation of Distinct Bulk and Surface Chemical Environments in a Topological Insulator under Magnetic doping

The influence of magnetic dopants on the electronic and chemical environments in topological insulators (TIs) is a key factor when considering possible spintronic applications based on topological surface state properties. Here we provide spectroscopic evidence for the presence of distinct chemical and electronic behavior for surface and bulk magnetic doping of Bi2Te3. The inclusion of Mn in the bulk of Bi2Te3 induces a genuine dilute ferromagnetic state, with reduction of the bulk band gap as the Mn content is increased. Deposition of Fe on the Bi2Te3 surface, on the other hand, favors the formation of iron telluride already at coverages as low as 0.07 monolayer, as a consequence of the reactivity of the Te-rich surface. Our results identify the factors that need to be controlled in the realization of magnetic nanosystems and interfaces based on TIs.

Nature of the 5f states in actinide metals

Actinide elements produce a plethora of interesting physical behaviors due to the 5f states. This review compiles and analyzes progress in understanding of the electronic and magnetic structure of the 5f states in actinide metals. Particular interest is given to electron energy-loss spectroscopy and many-electron atomic spectral calculations, since there is now an appreciable library of core d -> valence f transitions for Th, U, Np, Pu, Am, and Cm. These results are interwoven and discussed against published experimental data, such as x-ray photoemission and absorption spectroscopy, transport measurements, and electron, x-ray, and neutron diffraction, as well as theoretical results, such as density-functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory.
