Field-tuned quasiparticles and electronic structure in heavy-fermion YbNi4P2

We study the Fermi surface topology and quasiparticle properties in the heavy fermion compound YbNi4P2 at high magnetic fields using quantum oscillation measurements. We observe a large decrease of the quasiparticle mass with increasing field and demonstrate good qualitative agreement with the single-ion Kondo model. At the putative Lifshitz transition at 17 T, we observe a sudden change of quantum oscillation frequencies suggesting an abrupt change of the electronic structure and/or quasiparticle characteristics. Our results demonstrate the ability to tune the electronic structure and provide input for theoretical models of YbNi4P2 and correlated electron systems in high magnetic fields.

Successive Electronic Topological Transitions in the Antiferromagnet UPd$_2$Al$_3$

We report successive anomalies at low temperature in the magnetic field dependence of the thermoelectric signal in the heavy fermion compound UPd$_{2}$Al$_{3}$ inside the antiferromagnetic state up to the metamagnetic transition at $H_\text{M} =18$~T. Based on renormalisation perturbation theory and the partitioning of the $f$ orbitals into localized and delocalized parts, our analysis attributes these anomalies to complex topological changes of the Fermi surface driven by Zeeman effect. The observation of a sudden change of sign both in the thermoelectric power and in the Hall coefficient at $H_\text{M}$ in addition to the appearance of large quantum oscillations in the thermoelectric power above $H_\text{M}$ indicate a strong Fermi surface reconstruction at the metamagnetic transition due to the unfolding of the electronic bands.

Interplay between Hund's rule and Kondo effect in a quantum dot

The interaction between localized spins on a quantum dot and free electrons in the reservoirs forms a many-particle entangled system giving rise to the Kondo effect. Here, we investigate electron transport in the third shell of a gate-defined GaAs quantum dot. The addition energy shows a maximum at half-filling of the shell which can be described analytically with Hund's rule exchange interaction. For 7 to 11 electrons occupying the quantum dot Zero-bias anomalies characteristic for the Kondo effect are observed, but with unexpected widths. Here the quantum dot has to be described as a multi-orbital Kondo impurity with Hund's interaction. In this way this quantum dot can be seen as a model system for a Hund's coupled mixed-valence quantum impurity as appearing in Hund's metals where local ferromagnetic interactions between orbitals lead to the emergence of complex electronic states.

Stabilization of U 5$f^2$ configuration in UTe$_2$ through U 6d dimers in the presence of Te2 chains

We investigate the topological superconductor candidate UTe$_2$ using high-resolution valence-band resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the U $M_{4,5}$-edges. We observe atomic-like low-energy excitations that support the correlated nature of this unconventional superconductor. These excitations originate from the U $5f^2$ configuration, which is unexpected since the short Te2-Te2 distances exclude Te2 being 2-. By utilizing the photoionization cross-section dependence of the photoemission spectra in combination with band structure calculations, we infer that the stabilization of the U $5f^2$ configuration is due to the U $6d$ bonding states in the U-dimers acting as a charge reservoir. Our results emphasize that the description of the physical properties should commence with a $5f^2$ $ansatz$.

Spectroscopic evidence of Kondo-induced quasi-quartet in CeRh$_2$As$_2$

CeRh$_2$As$_2$ is a new multiphase superconductor with strong suggestions for an additional itinerant multipolar ordered phase. The modeling of the low temperature properties of this heavy fermion compound requires a quartet Ce$^{3+}$ crystal-field ground state. Here we provide the evidence for the formation of such a quartet state using x-ray spectroscopy. Core-level photoelectron and x-ray absorption spectroscopy confirm the presence of Kondo hybridization in CeRh$_2$As$_2$. The temperature dependence of the linear dichroism unambiguously reveils the impact of Kondo physics for coupling the Kramer's doublets into an effective quasi-quartet. Non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering data find that the $|Γ_7^- \rangle$ state with its lobes along the 110 direction of the tetragonal structure ($xy$ orientation) contributes most to the multi-orbital ground state of CeRh$_2$As$_2$.

Orbital-Induced Crossover of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov Phase into Abrikosov-like States

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state can emerge in superconductors for which the orbital critical field exceeds the Pauli limit. Here, we present angular-resolved specific-heat data of the quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$, with a focus on high fields in the regime of the FFLO transition. For an increasing out-of-plane tilt of the applied magnetic field, which leads to an increase of orbital contributions, we found that the nature of the superconducting transition changes from second to first order and that a further transition appears within the high-field superconducting phase. However, the superconducting state above the Pauli limit is stable for field tilt of several degrees. Since any finite perpendicular component of the magnetic field necessarily leads to quantization of the orbital motion, the resulting vortex lattice states compete with the modulated order parameter of the FFLO state leading to complex high-field superconducting phases. By solving the linearized self-consistency equation within weak-coupling BCS theory, we show that our results are clear experimental evidence of an orbital-induced transformation of the FFLO order-parameter into Abrikosov-like states of higher Landau levels.

Photo-emission signatures of coherence breakdown in Kondo alloys: dynamical mean-field theory approach

We study the Kondo alloy model on a square lattice using dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) for Kondo substitution and disorder effects, together with static mean-field approximations. We computed and analyzed photoemission properties as a function of electronic filling $n_c$, Kondo impurity concentration $x$, and strength of Kondo temperature $T_K$. We provide a complete description of the Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) signals expected in the paramagnetic Kondo phases. By analyzing the Fermi surface, we observe the Lifshitz-like transition predicted previously for strong $T_K$ at $x=n_c$ and we discuss the evolution of the dispersion from the dense coherent to the dilute Kondo regimes. At smaller $T_K$, we find that this transition marking the breakdown of coherence at $x=n_c$ becomes a crossover. However, we identify another transition at a smaller concentration $x^\star$ where the effective mass continuously vanishes. $x^\star$ separates the one-branch and the two-branches ARPES dispersions characterizing respectively dilute and dense Kondo paramagnetic regimes. The $x-T_K$ phase diagrams are also described, suggesting that the transition at $x^\star$ might be experimentally observable since magnetically ordered phases are stabilized at much lower $T_K$. Fermi surface reconstructions in antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases are also discussed.

Possible multi-orbital ground state in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$

The crystal-field ground state wave function of CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ has been investigated with linear polarized $M$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy from 250mK to 250K, thus covering the superconducting ($T_{\text{c}}$=0.6K), the Kondo ($T_{\text{K}}$$\approx$20K) as well as the Curie-Weiss regime. The comparison with full-multiplet calculations shows that the temperature dependence of the experimental linear dichroism is well explained with a $Γ_7^{(1)}$ crystal-field ground-state and the thermal population of excited states at around 30meV. The crystal-field scheme does not change throughout the entire temperature range thus making the scenario of orbital switching unlikely. Spectroscopic evidence for the presence of the Ce 4$f^0$ configuration in the ground state is consistent with the possibility for a multi-orbital character of the ground state. We estimate from the Kondo temperature and crystal-field splitting energies that several percents of the higher lying $Γ_6$ state and $Γ_7^{(2)}$ crystal-field states are mixed into the primarily $Γ_7^{(1)}$ ground state. This estimate is also supported by re-normalized band-structure calculations that uses the experimentally determined crystal-field scheme.

Transport Spectroscopy of the Field Induced Cascade of Lifshitz Transitions in YbRh2Si2

A series of strong anomalies in the thermoelectric power is observed in the heavy fermion compound YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ under the effect of magnetic field varying in the range from 9.5~T to 13~T. We identify these features with a sequence of topological transformations of the sophisticated Fermi surface of this compound, namely a cascade of Lifshitz topological transitions. In order to undoubtedly attribute these anomalies to the specific topological changes of the Fermi surface, we employ the renormalized band method. Basing on its results we suggest a simplified model consisting of the large peripheral Fermi surface sheet and the number of continuously appearing (disappearing) small "voids" or "necks". We account for the multiple electron scattering processes between various components of the Fermi surface, calculate the corresponding scattering times, and, finally, find the magnetic field dependence of the Seebeck coefficient. The obtained analytical expression reproduces reasonably the observed positions of the maxima and minima as well as the overall line shapes and allows us to identify the character of corresponding topological transformations.

Intrinsic ac anomalous Hall effect of nonsymmorphic chiral superconductors with an application to $\mathrm{UPt_3}$

We identify an intrinsic mechanism of the anomalous Hall effect for non-symmorphic chiral superconductors. This mechanism relies on both a nontrivial multi-band chiral superconducting order parameter, which is a mixture of pairings of even and odd angular momentum channels, and a complex normal state inter-sublattice hopping, both of which are consequences of the nonsymmorphic group symmetry of the underlying lattice. We apply this mechanism to the putative chiral superconducting phase of the heavy-fermion superconductor $\mathrm{UPt_3}$ and calculate the anomalous ac Hall conductivity in a simplified two-band model. From the ac Hall conductivity and optical data we estimate the polar Kerr rotation angle and compare it to the measured results for $\mathrm{UPt_3}$ [E. R. Schemm \textit{et al.}, Science \textbf{345},190(2014)].

Critical magnetic field of ultrathin superconducting films and interfaces

We derive an analytic expression for the temperature dependent critical magnetic field parallel to ultrathin superconducting films with Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Thereby we cover the range from small to large spin-orbit interactions $λ$ compared with the gap parameter $Δ_0$. We find that at a critical spin-orbit energy $λ_c$ a first-order phase transition takes place at which the pairing momentum of the Cooper pairs changes discontinuously. We speculate that this might give raise to new phenomena. With increasing $λ/Δ_0$, the pair formation changes from interband to intraband pairing. For $λ>λ_c$, a dimensional cross-over of the critical field from two to one dimension is taking place.

Electronic Structure of LuRh2Si2: "Small" Fermi Surface Reference to YbRh2Si2

We present band structure calculations and quantum oscillation measurements on LuRh2Si2, which is an ideal reference to the intensively studied quantum critical heavy-fermion system YbRh2Si2. Our band structure calculations show a strong sensitivity of the Fermi surface on the position of the silicon atoms zSi within the unit cell. Single crystal structure refinement and comparison of predicted and observed quantum oscillation frequencies and masses yield zSi = 0.379c in good agreement with numerical lattice relaxation. This value of zSi is suggested for future band structure calculations on LuRh2Si2 and YbRh2Si2. LuRh2Si2 with a full f electron shell represents the "small" Fermi surface configuration of YbRh2Si2. Our experimentally and ab initio derived quantum oscillation frequencies of LuRh2Si2 show strong differences with earlier measurements on YbRh2Si2. Consequently, our results confirm the contribution of the f electrons to the Fermi surface of YbRh2Si2 at high magnetic fields. Yet the limited agreement with refined fully itinerant local density approximation calculations highlights the need for more elaborated models to describe the Fermi surface of YbRh2Si2.

Multiple-charge transfer and trapping in DNA dimers

We investigate the charge transfer characteristics of one and two excess charges in a DNA base-pair dimer using a model Hamiltonian approach. The electron part comprises diagonal and off-diagonal Coulomb matrix elements such a correlated hopping and the bond-bond interaction, which were recently calculated by Starikov [E. B. Starikov, Phil. Mag. Lett. {\bf 83}, 699 (2003)] for different DNA dimers. The electronic degrees of freedom are coupled to an ohmic or a super-ohmic bath serving as dissipative environment. We employ the numerical renormalization group method in the nuclear tunneling regime and compare the results to Marcus theory for the thermal activation regime. For realistic parameters, the rate that at least one charge is transferred from the donor to the acceptor in the subspace of two excess electrons significantly exceeds the rate in the single charge sector. Moreover, the dynamics is strongly influenced by the Coulomb matrix elements. We find sequential and pair transfer as well as a regime where both charges remain self-trapped. The transfer rate reaches its maximum when the difference of the on-site and inter-site Coulomb matrix element is equal to the reorganization energy which is the case in a GC-GC dimer. Charge transfer is completely suppressed for two excess electrons in AT-AT in an ohmic bath and replaced by damped coherent electron-pair oscillations in a super-ohmic bath. A finite bond-bond interaction $W$ alters the transfer rate: it increases as function of $W$ when the effective Coulomb repulsion exceeds the reorganization energy (inverted regime) and decreases for smaller Coulomb repulsion.

Conductance Through a Redox System in the Coulomb Blockade Regime: Many-Particle Effects and Influence of Electronic Correlations

We investigate the transport characteristics of a redox system weakly coupled to leads in the Coulomb blockade regime. The redox system comprises a donor and acceptor separated by an insulating bridge in a solution. It is modeled by a two-site extended Hubbard model which includes on-site and inter-site Coulomb interactions and the coupling to a bosonic bath. The current voltage characteristics is calculated at high temperatures using a rate equation approach. For high voltages exceeding the Coulomb repulsion at the donor site the calculated transport characteristics exhibit pronounced deviations from the behavior expected from single-electron transport. Depending on the relative sizes of the effective on-site and inter-site Coulomb interactions on one side and the reorganization energy on the other side we find negative differential resistance or current enhancement.

Partial localization of correlated electrons: spin dependent masses, saturated ferromagnetism, and effective s-d model

We determine the localization threshold in a partially filled and orbitally degenerate model of correlated electrons. Particular emphasis is put on a non-integer band filling, when the system decomposes into the localized and the itinerant subsystems; this situation is described by an effective s-d model. A simultaneous transition to the ferromagnetic state is discussed as driven by the Hund's rule coupling. Dependence of the quasiparticle mass on the spin direction appears naturally in the ferromagnetic phase and is attributed to the electron correlation effects, as is also a metamagnetic transition in an applied field. Although the main results have been obtained within the saddle point slave-boson approach, their qualitative features are discussed in general terms, i.e. as a transition from quantum-mechanical indistinguishability of particles to the two-component situation. A comparison with the situation for the orbitally nondegenerate band is also briefly mentioned.

Strongly correlated electrons

We review theoretical concepts and models for materials with strongly correlated d- or f electrons. We discuss low-energy effective models and the renormalized band method for Ce-based Kondo lattice systems. They are applied to the analysis of associated magnetic and superconducting instabilities. In addititon quantum phase transitions are investigated. Special emphasis is given to the partial localisation of 5f electrons in U compounds and its consequences for unconventional superconductivity. Wigner crystallisation in the homogeneous electron gas and its generalisation to 4f pnictide and 3d oxide materials is covered extensively. We analyse simultaneous charge order and lattice instabilities in geometrically frustrated V-oxide spinels. Using a spinless fermion model we also discuss the emergence of fractional charges in the frustrated pyrochlore or checkerboard lattice. Finally we focus on the signature of strong electronic correlations in high-energy excitations.

Polar magneto-optical Kerr effect for low-symmetric ferromagnets

The polar magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) for low-symmetric ferromagnetic crystals is investigated theoretically based on first-principle calculations of optical conductivities and a transfer matrix approach for the electrodynamics part of the problem. Exact average magneto-optical properties of polycrystals are described, taking into account realistic models for the distribution of domain orientations. It is shown that for low-symmetric ferromagnetic single crystals the MOKE is determined by an interplay of crystallographic birefringence and magnetic effects. Calculations for single and bi-crystal of hcp 11-20 Co and for a polycrystal of CrO_2 are performed, with results being in good agreement with experimental data.
