Tidal Love numbers and the dynamical instability of AdS bubbles

In this work, we study non-radial perturbations of AdS bubbles and their tidal Love numbers (TLNs). The odd- and even-parity TLNs are computed up to $l=6$ in the limit $k \to \infty$. The odd-parity TLNs are found to be negative, while the even-parity TLNs are positive for $\upsilon^2_s=-1$. As $l$ increases, the tidal Love numbers approach zero. The TLNs of the even-parity sector up to order $l=41$ are also calculated over the entire parameter space of $k$, from $0$ to $\infty$. We find that in the region where $p/\sigma>0$, an increasing number of TLNs become negative as $l$ increases. For $l = 41$, the highest order we have examined, the TLNs are negative everywhere except in a narrow region very close to the zero of $p/\sigma$, which agrees well with the instability criterion in the eikonal limit for self-gravitating membranes proposed by Yang {\it et al.}\ [P. R. L. {\bf 130}, 011402 (2023)].

The identification between the bulk and boundary conserved quantities

By using Wald formalism, we show that the identification between the bulk and boundary conserved quantities induced by the perturbation of generic non-electromagnetic matter field holds not only on top of the asymptotically flat stationary spacetimes but also on top of the asymptotically AdS stationary ones. We further show that such an identification reduces to the familiar form for the test point particle by viewing it as the limiting case of general matter.

Black hole thermodynamics is around the corner

We propose to work on the Euclidean black hole solution with a corner rather than with the prevalent conical singularity. As a result, we find that the Wald formula for black hole entropy can be readily obtained for generic $F(R_{abcd})$ gravity by using both the action without the corner term and the action with the corner term due to their equivalence to the first order variation. With such an equivalence, we further make use of a special diffeomorphism to accomplish a direct derivation of the ADM Hamiltonian conjugate to the Killing vector field normal to the horizon in the Lorentz signature as a conjugate variable of the inverse temperature in the grand canonical ensemble.

Quadratic curvature corrections to 5-dimensional Kerr-AdS black hole thermodynamics by background subtraction method

We justify the applicability of the background subtraction method to both Einstein's gravity and its higher derivative corrections in 5-dimensional asymptotically AdS spacetimes, where the corresponding higher derivative corrections to the expression for the ADM mass and angular momentum are also worked out. Then we further apply the background subtraction method to calculate the first order corrected Gibbs free energy by the quadratic curvature terms for the 5-dimensional Kerr-AdS black hole, which is in exact agreement with the previous result obtained by the holographic renormalization method. Such an agreement in turn substantiates the applicability of the background subtraction method.

Emergence of cosmic space and horizon thermodynamics in the context of the quantum-deformed entropy

According to the quantum deformation approach to quantum gravity, the thermodynamical entropy of a quantum-deformed (q-deformed) black hole with horizon area $A$ established by Jalalzadeh is expressed as $S_q = \pi\sin \left( \frac{A}{8G\mathcal N} \right) /\sin\left(\frac{\pi}{2\mathcal N}\right)$, where $\mathcal N=L_q^2/L_{p}^2$ is the q-deformation parameter, $L_{p}$ denotes the Planck length, and $L_q$ denotes the quantum-deformed cosmic apparent horizon distance. In this paper, assuming that the q-deformed entropy is associated with the apparent horizon of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe, we derive the Friedmann equation from the unified first law of thermodynamics, ${dE = T_q dS_q + WdV}$. And this one obtained is in line with the Friedmann equation derived from the law of emergence proposed by Padmanabhan. It clearly shows the connection between the law of emergence and the unified first law of thermodynamics. Subsequently, in the context of the q-deformed horizon entropy, we investigate the constraints of entropy maximization, and result demonstrates the consistency of the law of emergence with the maximization of the q-deformed horizon entropy. Hence, the law of emergence can be understood as a tendency to maximize the q-deformed horizon entropy.

A note on electrical and thermodynamic properties of Isolated Horizon

The electrical laws and Carnot cycle of Isolated Horizon (IH) are investigated in this paper. We establish the Ohm's law and Joule's law of an Isolated Horizon, and find that the conceptual picture of black holes (Membrane Paradigm) can also apply to this kind of quasi-local black holes. We also investigate the geometrical properties near a non-rotating IH, and find that under the first-order approximation of r, there exist a Killing vector and a Hamiltonian conjugate to it, so this vector is a physical observer. We calculate the energy as measured at infinity of a particle at rest outside a non-rotating IH, and use this result to construct a reversible Carnot cycle with the Isolated Horizon as a cold reservoir, which confirms the thermodynamic nature of Isolated Horizon.

Descope of the ALIA mission

The present work reports on a feasibility study commissioned by the Chinese Academy of Sciences of China to explore various possible mission options to detect gravitational waves in space alternative to that of the eLISA/LISA mission concept. Based on the relative merits assigned to science and technological viability, a few representative mission options descoped from the ALIA mission are considered. A semi-analytic Monte Carlo simulation is carried out to understand the cosmic black hole merger histories starting from intermediate mass black holes at high redshift as well as the possible scientific merits of the mission options considered in probing the light seed black holes and their coevolution with galaxies in early Universe. The study indicates that, by choosing the armlength of the interferometer to be three million kilometers and shifting the sensitivity floor to around one-hundredth Hz, together with a very moderate improvement on the position noise budget, there are certain mission options capable of exploring light seed, intermediate mass black hole binaries at high redshift that are not readily accessible to eLISA/LISA, and yet the technological requirements seem to within reach in the next few decades for China.
