A bi-Lipschitz characterization of strong minimum-attainment for Lipschitz maps

We completely characterize the denseness of strongly minimum-attaining Lipschitz functions, a minimum analogue for strongly norm-attaining Lipschitz functions, in terms of bi-Lipschitz embeddings. More precisely, our main result shows that the set of strongly minimum-attaining Lipschitz functions defined on a complete metric space $M$ fails the denseness if and only if $M$ is bi-Lipschitz equivalent to a subset of $\mathbb{R}$ with positive Lebesgue measure, or equivalently, if $M$ admits a bi-Lipschitz embedding into $\mathbb{R}$ and $M$ has positive 1-dimensional Hausdorff measure. As a consequence, we provide an isometric characterization of the pure 1-unrectifiability of $M$ in terms of strongly minimum-attaining Lipschitz maps defined on bi-Lipschitz copies of closed subsets of $M$. Several counterexamples showing that the main result cannot be naturally extended to the vector-valued setting are also presented.

On absolute strong exposure for Lipschitz maps

We introduce strongly exposing Lipschitz maps, a vector-valued extension of Weaver's peaking functions and a nonlinear analogue of absolutely strongly exposing operators. Our main result shows that a Lipschitz map is strongly exposing if and only if its canonical linearization is absolutely strongly exposing. This equivalence serves as a bridge between the linear and Lipschitz settings and enables us to transfer several results from the former to the latter. As applications, we establish norm-denseness and residuality results for strongly exposing Lipschitz maps, obtain an isomorphic characterization related to the denseness of strongly norm-attaining Lipschitz maps. We also investigate weak sequential denseness of strongly exposing Lipschitz maps. In particular, we prove that this property holds whenever the derived set of the underlying metric space is finite, while further examples show that, unlike for strongly norm-attaining Lipschitz maps, weak sequential denseness may fail beyond trivial cases.

Range strongly exposing operators between Banach spaces

We introduce a new class of bounded linear operators, called range strongly exposing (RSE) operators, which form a natural intermediate class: weaker than Bourgain's absolutely strongly exposing operators, yet stronger than both uniquely quasi norm-attaining and classical norm-attaining operators. Several foundational results on norm-attaining operators are extended to the RSE setting. Among our main contributions, we establish that for every infinite-dimensional Banach space $Y$, there exists a Banach space $X$ such that the RSE operators from $X$ to $Y$ are not dense - an RSE analogue of a result by Acosta (1999) which applies only when $Y$ is strictly convex. We also show that the Radon-Nikodým property of $Y$ is sufficient to obtain that RSE operators from $L_1(μ)$ to $Y$ are dense and that this is also necessary if $μ$ is not purely atomic. This extends and sharpens classical results by Uhl (1976). As a consequence, we prove that the set of RSE operators between $L_1(μ)$ and $L_1 (ν)$ is dense if and only if at least one of the measures $μ$ or $ν$ is purely atomic, in contrast with the classical result by Iwanik (1979) which guarantees the denseness of norm-attaining operators for all measures $μ$ and $ν$. We also prove that weakly compact operators from any $C(K)$ space can always be approximated by (weakly compact) RSE operators, thereby strengthening a result of Schachermayer (1983). Additionally, we present several improvements of more recent results concerning finite-rank operators and $Γ$-flat operators which give, in particular, RSE versions of classical results on compact operators by Johnson-Wolfe (1979). Finally, we discuss RSE counterparts of results by Zizler and Lindenstrauss on the denseness of operators whose adjoints attain their norm.

Approximations of Lipschitz maps with maximal derivatives on Banach spaces

We study two types of approximations of Lipschitz maps with derivatives of maximal slopes on Banach spaces. First, we characterize the Radon-Nikodým property in terms of strongly norm attaining Lipschitz maps and maximal derivative attaining Lipschitz maps, which complements the characterization presented in \cite{CCM}. It is shown in particular that if every Lipschitz map can be approximated by those that either strongly attain their norm or attain their maximal derivative for every renorming of the range space, then the range space must have the Radon-Nikodým property. Next, we prove that every Lipschitz functional defined on the real line can be locally approximated by maximal affine functions, while such an approximation cannot be guaranteed in the context of uniform approximation. This extends the previous work in \cite{BJLPS} in view of maximal affine functions.

The Daugavet and Delta-constants of points in Banach spaces

We introduce two new notions called the Daugavet constant and $Δ$-constant of a point, which measure quantitatively how far the point is from being Daugavet point and $Δ$-point and allow us to study Daugavet and $Δ$-points in Banach spaces from a quantitative viewpoint. We show that these notions can be viewed as a localized version of certain global estimations of Daugavet and diametral local diameter two properties such as Daugavet indices of thickness. As an intriguing example, we present the existence of a Banach space $X$ in which all points on the unit sphere have positive Daugavet constants despite the Daugavet indices of thickness of $X$ being zero. Moreover, using the Daugavet and $Δ$-constants of points in the unit sphere, we describe the existence of almost Daugavet and $Δ$-points as well as the set of denting points of the unit ball. We also present exact values of the Daugavet and $Δ$-constant on several classical Banach spaces, as well as Lipschitz-free spaces. In particular, it is shown that there is a Lipschitz-free space with a $Δ$-point which is the furthest away from being a Daugavet point. Finally, we provide some related stability results concerning the Daugavet and $Δ$-constant.

Linear structures of norm-attaining Lipschitz functions and their complements

We solve two main questions on linear structures of (non-)norm-attaining Lipschitz functions. First, we show that for every infinite metric space $M$, the set consisting of Lipschitz functions on $M$ which do not strongly attain their norm and the zero contains an isometric copy of $\ell_\infty$, and moreover, those functions can be chosen not to attain their norm as functionals on the Lipschitz-free space over $M$. Second, we prove that for every infinite metric space $M$, neither the set of strongly norm-attaining Lipschitz functions on $M$ nor the union of its complement with zero is ever a linear space. Furthermore, we observe that the set consisting of Lipschitz functions which cannot be approximated by strongly norm-attaining ones and the zero element contains $\ell_\infty$ isometrically in all the known cases. Some natural observations and spaceability results are also investigated for Lipschitz functions that attain their norm in one way but do not in another, for several norm-attainment notions considered in the literature.

Embeddings of infinite-dimensional spaces in the sets of norm-attaining Lipschitz functions

Motivated by the result of Dantas et. al. (2023) that there exist metric spaces for which the set of strongly norm-attaining Lipschitz functions does not contain an isometric copy of $c_0$, we introduce and study a weaker notion of norm-attainment for Lipschitz functions called the pointwise norm-attainment. As a main result, we show that for every infinite metric space $M$, there exists a metric space $M_0 \subseteq M$ such that the set of pointwise norm-attaining Lipschitz functions on $M_0$ contains an isometric copy of $c_0$. We also observe that there are countable metric spaces $M$ for which the set of pointwise norm-attaining Lipschitz functions contains an isometric copy of $\ell_\infty$, which is a result that does not hold for the set of strongly norm-attaining Lipschitz functions. Several new results on $c_0$-embedding and $\ell_1$-embedding into the set of strongly norm-attaining Lipschitz functions are presented as well. In particular, we show that if $M$ is a subset of an $\mathbb{R}$-tree containing all the branching points, then the set of strongly norm-attaining Lipschitz functions contains $c_0$ isometrically. As a related result, we provide an example of metric space $M$ for which the set of norm-attaining functionals on the Lipschitz-free space over $M$ cannot contain an isometric copy of $c_0$. Finally, we compare the concept of pointwise norm-attainment with the several different kinds of norm-attainment from the literature.

A generalized ACK structure and the denseness of norm attaining operators

Inspired by the recent work of Cascales et al., we introduce a generalized concept of ACK structure on Banach spaces. Using this property, which we call by the quasi-ACK structure, we are able to extend known universal properties on range spaces concerning the density of norm attaining operators. We provide sufficient conditions for quasi-ACK structure of spaces and results on the stability of quasi-ACK structure. As a consequence, we present new examples satisfying the (Lindenstrauss) property B$^k$, which have not been known previously. We also prove that property B$^k$ is stable under injective tensor products in certain cases. Moreover, ACK structure of some Banach spaces of vector-valued holomorphic functions is also discussed, leading to new examples of universal BPB range spaces for certain operator ideals.

Weak-star quasi norm attaining operators

For Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$, a bounded linear operator $T\colon X \longrightarrow Y^*$ is said to weak-star quasi attain its norm if the $σ(Y^*,Y)$-closure of the image by $T$ of the unit ball of $X$ intersects the sphere of radius $\|T\|$ centred at the origin in $Y^*$. This notion is inspired by the quasi-norm attainment of operators introduced and studied in \cite{CCJM}. As a main result, we prove that the set of weak-star quasi norm attaining operators is dense in the space of bounded linear operators regardless of the choice of the Banach spaces, furthermore, that the approximating operator can be chosen with additional properties. This allows us to distinguish the properties of weak-star quasi norm attaining operators from those of quasi norm attaining operators. It is also shown that, under certain conditions, weak-star quasi norm attaining operators share numbers of equivalent properties with other types of norm attaining operators, but that there are also a number of situations in which they behave differently from the others.

On a set of norm attaining operators and the strong Birkhoff-James orthogonality

Continuing the study of recent results on the Birkhoff-James orthogonality and the norm attainment of operators, we introduce a property namely the adjusted Bhatia-Šemrl property for operators which is weaker than the Bhatia-Šemrl property. The set of operators with the adjusted Bhatia-Šemrl property is contained in the set of norm attaining ones as it was in the case of the Bhatia-Šemrl property. It is known that the set of operators with the Bhatia-Šemrl property is norm-dense if the domain space $X$ of the operators has the Radon-Nikodým property like finite dimensional spaces, but it is not norm-dense for some classical spaces such as $c_0$, $L_1[0,1]$ and $C[0,1]$. In contrast with the Bhatia-Šemrl property, we show that the set of operators with the adjusted Bhatia-Šemrl property is norm-dense when the domain space is $c_0$ or $L_1[0,1]$. Moreover, we show that the set of functionals having the adjusted Bhatia-Šemrl property on $C[0,1]$ is not norm-dense but such a set is weak-$*$-dense in $C(K)^*$ for any compact Hausdorff $K$.

Norm attaining Lipschitz maps toward vectors

We extend the recent result of G. Godefroy which concerns the existence of non-norm attaining Lipschitz maps in order to characterize the norm attainment toward vectors for Lipschitz maps in the general setting of underlying space. The main theorem of the present paper states that the existence of non-norm attaining Lipschitz maps toward vectors on a large class of metric spaces is characterized by the finite-dimensionality of range space. As an extension of his counterexample, some denseness results on norm attaining Lipschitz maps toward vectors are also shown.

On the Crawford number attaining operators

We study the denseness of Crawford number attaining operators on Banach spaces. Mainly, we prove that if a Banach space has the RNP, then the set of Crawford number attaining operators is dense in the space of bounded linear operators. We also see among others that the set of Crawford number attaining operators may be dense in the space of all bounded linear operators while they do not coincide, by observing the case of compact operators when the Banach space has a 1-unconditional basis. Furthermore, we show a Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás type property for the Crawford number for certain Banach spaces, and we finally discuss some difficulties and possible problems on the topic.

The Lipschitz bounded approximation property for operator ideals

In this article, we introduce the Lipschitz bounded approximation property for operator ideals. With this notion, we extend the original work done by Godefroy and Kalton and give some partial answers on the equivalence between the bounded approximation property and the Lipschitz bounded approximation property based on an arbitrary operator ideal. Furthermore, we investigate the three space problems on the preceding bounded approximation properties.

On the Lipschitz numerical index of Banach spaces

We provide some new consequences on the Lipschitz numerical radius and index which were introduced recently. More precisely, we give some renorming results on the Lipschitz numerical index, introduce a concept of Lipschitz numerical radius attaining functions in order to show that the denseness fails for an arbitrary Banach space, and study a Lipschitz version of Daugavet centers. Furthermore, we discuss the Lipschitz numerical index of vector-valued function spaces, absolute sums of Banach spaces, the Köthe-Bochner spaces, and Banach spaces which contain a dense union of increasing family of one-complemented subspaces.

The Birkhoff-James orthogonality and norm attainment for multilinear maps

Very recently, motivated by the result of Bhatia and Šemrl which characterizes the Birkhoff-James orthogonality of operators on a finite dimensional Hilbert space in terms of norm attaining points, the Bhatia-Šemrl property was introduced. The main purpose of this article is to study the denseness of the set of multilinear maps with the Bhatia-Šemrl property which is contained in the set of norm attaining ones. Contrary to the most of previous results which were shown for operators on real Banach spaces, we prove the denseness for multilinear maps on some complex Banach spaces. We also show that the denseness of operators does not hold when the domain space is $c_0$ for arbitrary range. Moreover, we find plenty of Banach spaces $Y$ such that only the zero operator has the Bhatia-Šemrl property in the space of operators from $c_0$ to $Y$.

The Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property on the space of $c_0$-sum

The main purpose of this paper is to study Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás type properties on $c_0$ sum of Banach spaces. Among other results, we show that the pair $(c_0(X),Y)$ has the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property (in short, BPBp) for operators whenever $X$ is uniformly convex and $Y$ is (complex) uniformly convex. We also prove that the pair $(c_0(X),c_0(X))$ has the BPBp for bilinear forms whenever $X$ is both uniformly convex and uniformly smooth. These extend the previously known results that $(c_0,Y)$ has the BPBp for operators whenever $Y$ is uniformly convex and $(c_0,c_0)$ has the BPBp for bilinear forms. We also obtain some results on a local BPBp which is called $\mathbf{L}_{p,p}$ for both operators and bilinear forms.

On quasi norm attaining operators between Banach spaces

We introduce a weakened notion of norm attainment for bounded linear operators between Banach spaces which we call \emph{quasi norm attaining operators}. An operator $T\colon X \longrightarrow Y$ between the Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ is quasi norm attaining if there is a sequence $(x_n)$ of norm one elements in $X$ such that $(Tx_n)$ converges to some $u\in Y$ with $\|u\|=\|T\|$. Norm attaining operators in the usual sense (i.e.\ operators for which there is a point in the unit ball where the norm of its image equals the norm of the operator) and compact operators satisfy this definition. The main result of the paper is that strong Radon-Nikodým operators such as weakly compact operators can be approximated by quasi norm attaining operators (even by a stronger version of the definition), which does not hold for norm attaining operators. This allows us to give characterizations of the Radon-Nikodým property in term of the denseness of quasi norm attaining operators for both domain spaces and range spaces, extending previous results by Bourgain and Huff. We also present positive and negative results on the denseness of quasi norm attaining operators, characterize both finite dimensionality and reflexivity in terms of quasi norm attaining operators, discuss conditions to obtain that quasi norm attaining operators are actually norm attaining, study the relationship with the norm attainment of the adjoint operator, and present some stability properties. We finish the paper with some open questions.

Emerging notions of norm attainment for Lipschitz maps between Banach spaces

We classify several notions of norm attaining Lipschitz maps which were introduced previously, and present the relations among them in order to verify proper inclusions. We also analyze some results for the sets of Lipschitz maps satisfying each of these properties to be dense or not in $\Lip(X,Y)$. For instance, we characterize a Banach space $Y$ with the Radon-Nikodým property in terms of the denseness of norm attaining Lipschitz maps with values in $Y$. Further, we introduce a property called the local directional Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for Lipschitz compact maps, which extends the one studied previously for scalar-valued functions, and provide some new positive results.
