Depth-resolved magnetization dynamics in Fe thin films after ultrafast laser excitation

We performed time-resolved x-ray resonant magnetic reflectivity measurements on a laser-excited ferromagnetic Fe thin film to simultaneously probe the transient magnetic and structural depth profiles with nanometer spatial and femtosecond temporal resolution. Our results show that during the first picoseconds after optical excitation, the magnetization of the Fe layer is strongly inhomogeneous, especially in the vicinity of the buried interface. By comparing our experimental results to predictions based on the microscopic three-temperature model and simulations of laser-induced spin-currents, we demonstrate that local and non-local angular momentum transfer phenomena take place simultaneously. After a few picoseconds, the magnetization relaxes back to equilibrium while the total thin film thickness starts oscillating periodically, with a maximum dilation of approximately 1.3% of the entire thin film thickness due to laser-induced stresses.

Correlations drive the attosecond response of strongly-correlated insulators

Attosecond spectroscopy of materials has provided invaluable insight into light-driven coherent electron dynamics. However, attosecond spectroscopies have so far been focused on weakly-correlated materials. As a result, the behavior of strongly-correlated systems is largely unknown at sub- to few-femtosecond timescales, even though it is typically the realm at which electron-electron interactions operate. Here we conduct attosecond-resolved experiments on the correlated insulator nickel oxide, and compare its response to a common band insulator, revealing fundamentally different behaviors. The results, together with state-of-the art time-dependent $\textit{ab initio}$ calculations, show that the correlated system response is governed by a laser-driven quench of electron correlations. The evolution of the on-site electronic interaction is measured here at its natural timescale, marking the first direct measurement of Hubbard $U$ renormalization in NiO. It is found to take place within a few femtoseconds, after which structural changes slowly start to take place. The resulting picture sheds light on the entire light-induced response of a strongly-correlated system, from attosecond to long-lived effects.

Photo-induced charge-transfer renormalization in NiO

Photo-doped states in strongly correlated charge transfer insulators are characterized by $d$-$d$ and $d$-$p$ interactions and the resulting intertwined dynamics of charge excitations and local multiplets. Here we use femtosecond x-ray absorption spectroscopy in combination with dynamical mean-field theory to disentangle these contributions in NiO. Upon resonant optical excitation across the charge transfer gap, the Ni $L_3$ and O $K$ absorption edges red-shift for $>10$ ps, associated with photo-induced changes in the screening environment. An additional signature below the Ni $L_3$ edge is identified for $<1$ ps, reflecting a transient nonthermal population of local many-body multiplets. We employ a nonthermal generalization of the multiplet ligand field theory to show that the feature originates from $d$-$d$ transitions. Overall, the photo-doped state differs significantly from a chemically doped state. Our results demonstrate the ability to reveal excitation pathways in correlated materials by x-ray spectroscopies, which is relevant for ultrafast materials design.
