Collinear expansion for color singlet cross sections

We demonstrate how to efficiently expand cross sections for color-singlet production at hadron colliders around the kinematic limit of all final state radiation being collinear to one of the incoming hadrons. This expansion is systematically improvable and applicable to a large class of physical observables. We demonstrate the viability of this technique by obtaining the first two terms in the collinear expansion of the rapidity distribution of the gluon fusion Higgs boson production cross section at next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO) in QCD perturbation theory. Furthermore, we illustrate how this technique is used to extract universal building blocks of scattering cross section like the N-jettiness and transverse momentum beam function at NNLO.

QCD Beyond Leading Power

In this thesis I study the infrared limits of QCD beyond leading power by developing effective quantum field theory techniques. I introduce the motivations for studying this subject both as a tool to deepen our understanding of the infrared structure of gauge theory amplitudes and cross sections in the soft, collinear and Regge limit as well as to improve predictions for collider observables. Using and extending the framework of Soft and Collinear Effective Theory (SCET), I explore the ingredients of factorization beyond leading power constructing subleading hard scattering operators and radiative jet and soft functions for processes such as Higgs production and Drell-Yan. I introduce new subleading power gauge invariant objects, the $θ$-jet and $θ$-soft functions, which arise in the renormalization of subleading power operators. I use them to achieve the first resummation of collinear and soft logarithms beyond leading power for a collider observable in QCD. I study the perturbative power corrections to differential distributions for color singlet production at the LHC retaining the full dependence on the kinematics of the color singlet. I highlight and solve the subtleties related to the regularization of rapidity divergences beyond leading power for which I propose a new regulator, the pure rapidity regulator. I present a new method to employ cutting edge multiloop techniques for the computation of the expansions of cross sections in the collinear limit. This allows the extraction of universal ingredients arising in the collinear limit of QCD to an unprecedented level of precision in perturbation theory. Finally, I study the Regge limit at the amplitude and cross section level beyond leading power, developing a Lagrangian formalism for the treatment of fermion mediated forward scattering processes in QCD and applying it to obtain the quark reggeization and BFKL resummation.

Transverse momentum dependent PDFs at N$^3$LO

We compute the quark and gluon transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in perturbative QCD. Our calculation is based on an expansion of the differential Higgs boson and Drell-Yan production cross sections about their collinear limit. This method allows us to employ cutting edge techniques for the computation of cross sections to extract the universal building blocks in question. The corresponding perturbative matching kernels for all channels are expressed in terms of simple harmonic polylogarithms up to weight five. As a byproduct, we confirm a previous computation of the soft function for transverse momentum factorization at N$^3$LO. Our results are the last missing ingredient to extend the $q_T$ subtraction methods to N$^3$LO and to obtain resummed $q_T$ spectra at N$^3$LL$^\prime$ accuracy both for gluon as well as for quark initiated processes.

Subleading Power Resummation of Rapidity Logarithms: The Energy-Energy Correlator in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM

We derive and solve renormalization group equations that allow for the resummation of subleading power rapidity logarithms. Our equations involve operator mixing into a new class of operators, which we term the "rapidity identity operators", that will generically appear at subleading power in problems involving both rapidity and virtuality scales. To illustrate our formalism, we analytically solve these equations to resum the power suppressed logarithms appearing in the back-to-back (double light cone) limit of the Energy-Energy Correlator (EEC) in $\mathcal{N}$=4 super-Yang-Mills. These logarithms can also be extracted to $\mathcal{O}(α_s^3)$ from a recent perturbative calculation, and we find perfect agreement to this order. Instead of the standard Sudakov exponential, our resummed result for the subleading power logarithms is expressed in terms of Dawson's integral, with an argument related to the cusp anomalous dimension. We call this functional form "Dawson's Sudakov". Our formalism is widely applicable for the resummation of subleading power rapidity logarithms in other more phenomenologically relevant observables, such as the EEC in QCD, the $p_T$ spectrum for color singlet boson production at hadron colliders, and the resummation of power suppressed logarithms in the Regge limit.

N-jettiness beam functions at N3LO

We present the first complete calculation for the quark and gluon $N$-jettiness ($\Tau_N$) beam functions at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in perturbative QCD. Our calculation is based on an expansion of the differential Higgs boson and Drell-Yan production cross sections about their collinear limit. This method allows us to employ cutting edge techniques for the computation of cross sections to extract the universal building blocks in question. The class of functions appearing in the matching coefficents for all channels includes iterated integrals with non-rational kernels, thus going beyond the one of harmonic polylogarithms. Our results are a key step in extending the $\Tau_N$ subtraction methods to N$^3$LO, and to resum $\Tau_N$ distributions at N$^3$LL$^\prime$ accuracy both for quark as well as for gluon initiated processes.

The Soft Quark Sudakov

There has been recent interest in understanding the all loop structure of the subleading power soft and collinear limits, with the goal of achieving a systematic resummation of subleading power infrared logarithms. Most of this work has focused on subleading power corrections to soft gluon emission, whose form is strongly constrained by symmetries. In this paper we initiate a study of the all loop structure of soft fermion emission. In $\mathcal{N}=1$ QCD we perform an operator based factorization and resummation of the associated infrared logarithms, and prove that they exponentiate into a Sudakov due to their relation to soft gluon emission. We verify this result through explicit calculation to $\mathcal{O}(α_s^3)$. We show that in QCD, this simple Sudakov exponentiation is violated by endpoint contributions proportional to $(C_A-C_F)^n$ which contribute at leading logarithmic order. Combining our $\mathcal{N}=1$ result and our calculation of the endpoint contributions to $\mathcal{O}(α_s^3)$, we conjecture a result for the soft quark Sudakov in QCD, a new all orders function first appearing at subleading power, and give evidence for its universality. Our result, which is expressed in terms of combinations of cusp anomalous dimensions in different color representations, takes an intriguingly simple form and also exhibits interesting similarities to results for large-x logarithms in the off diagonal splitting functions.

Subleading Power Factorization with Radiative Functions

The study of amplitudes and cross sections in the soft and collinear limits allows for an understanding of their all orders behavior, and the identification of universal structures. At leading power soft emissions are eikonal, and described by Wilson lines. Beyond leading power the eikonal approximation breaks down, soft fermions must be added, and soft radiation resolves the nature of the energetic partons from which they were emitted. For both subleading power soft gluon and quark emissions, we use the soft collinear effective theory (SCET) to derive an all orders gauge invariant bare factorization, at both amplitude and cross section level. This yields universal multilocal matrix elements, which we refer to as radiative functions. These appear from subleading power Lagrangians inserted along the lightcone which dress the leading power Wilson lines. The use of SCET enables us to determine the complete set of radiative functions that appear to $\mathcal{O}(λ^2)$ in the power expansion, to all orders in $α_s$. For the particular case of event shape observables in $e^+e^-\to$ dijets we derive how the radiative functions contribute to the factorized cross section to $\mathcal{O}(λ^2)$.

Helicity Methods for High Multiplicity Subleading Soft and Collinear Limits

The factorization of multi-leg gauge theory amplitudes in the soft and collinear limits provides strong constraints on the structure of amplitudes, and enables efficient calculations of multi-jet observables at the LHC. There is significant interest in extending this understanding to include subleading powers in the soft and collinear limits. While this has been achieved for low point amplitudes, for higher point functions there is a proliferation of variables and more complicated phase space, making the analysis more challenging. By combining the subleading power expansion of spinor-helicity variables in collinear limits with consistency relations derived from the soft collinear effective theory, we show how to efficiently extract the subleading power leading logarithms of $N$-jet event shape observables directly from known spinor-helicity amplitudes. At subleading power, we observe the presence of power law singularities arising solely from the expansion of the amplitudes, which for hadron collider event shapes lead to the presence of derivatives of parton distributions. The techniques introduced here can be used to efficiently compute the power corrections for $N$-jettiness subtractions for processes involving jets at the LHC.

First Subleading Power Resummation for Event Shapes

We derive and analytically solve renormalization group (RG) equations of gauge invariant non-local Wilson line operators which resum logarithms for event shape observables $τ$ at subleading power in the $τ\ll 1$ expansion. These equations involve a class of universal jet and soft functions arising through operator mixing, which we call $θ$-jet and $θ$-soft functions. An illustrative example involving these operators is introduced which captures the generic features of subleading power resummation, allowing us to derive the structure of the RG to all orders in $α_s$, and provide field theory definitions of all ingredients. As a simple application, we use this to obtain an analytic leading logarithmic result for the subleading power resummed thrust spectrum for $H\to gg$ in pure glue QCD. This resummation determines the nature of the double logarithmic series at subleading power, which we find is still governed by the cusp anomalous dimension. We check our result by performing an analytic calculation up to ${\cal O}(α_s^3)$. Consistency of the subleading power RG relates subleading power anomalous dimensions, constrains the form of the $θ$-soft and $θ$-jet functions, and implies an exponentiation of higher order loop corrections in the subleading power collinear limit. Our results provide a path for carrying out systematic resummation at subleading power for collider observables.

Subleading Power Rapidity Divergences and Power Corrections for $q_T$

A number of important observables exhibit logarithms in their perturbative description that are induced by emissions at widely separated rapidities. These include transverse-momentum ($q_T$) logarithms, logarithms involving heavy-quark or electroweak gauge boson masses, and small-$x$ logarithms. In this paper, we initiate the study of rapidity logarithms, and the associated rapidity divergences, at subleading order in the power expansion. This is accomplished using the soft collinear effective theory (SCET). We discuss the structure of subleading-power rapidity divergences and how to consistently regulate them. We introduce a new pure rapidity regulator and a corresponding $\overline{\rm MS}$-like scheme, which handles rapidity divergences while maintaining the homogeneity of the power expansion. We find that power-law rapidity divergences appear at subleading power, which give rise to derivatives of parton distribution functions. As a concrete example, we consider the $q_T$ spectrum for color-singlet production, for which we compute the complete $q_T^2/Q^2$ suppressed power corrections at $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$, including both logarithmic and nonlogarithmic terms. Our results also represent an important first step towards carrying out a resummation of subleading-power rapidity logarithms.

Power Corrections for N-Jettiness Subtractions at ${\cal O}(α_s)$

We continue the study of power corrections for $N$-jettiness subtractions by analytically computing the complete next-to-leading power corrections at $\cal{O}(α_s)$ for color-singlet production. This includes all nonlogarithmic terms and all partonic channels for Drell-Yan and gluon-fusion Higgs production. These terms are important to further improve the numerical performance of the subtractions, and to better understand the structure of power corrections beyond their leading logarithms, in particular their universality. We emphasize the importance of computing the power corrections differential in both the invariant mass, $Q$, and rapidity, $Y$, of the color-singlet system, which is necessary to account for the rapidity dependence in the subtractions. This also clarifies apparent disagreements in the literature. Performing a detailed numerical study, we find excellent agreement of our analytic results with a previous numerical extraction.

A Subleading Power Operator Basis for the Scalar Quark Current

Factorization theorems play a crucial role in our understanding of the strong interaction. For collider processes they are typically formulated at leading power and much less is known about power corrections in the $λ\ll 1$ expansion. Here we present a complete basis of power suppressed operators for a scalar quark current at $\mathcal{O}(λ^2)$ in the amplitude level power expansion in the Soft Collinear Effective Theory, demonstrating that helicity selection rules significantly simplify the construction. This basis applies for the production of any color singlet scalar in $q\bar{q}$ annihilation (such as $b \bar b \to H$). We also classify all operators which contribute to the cross section at $\mathcal{O}(λ^2)$ and perform matching calculations to determine their tree level Wilson coefficients. These results can be exploited to study power corrections in both resummed and fixed order perturbation theory, and for analyzing the factorization properties of gauge theory amplitudes and cross sections at subleading power.

Fermionic Glauber Operators and Quark Reggeization

We derive, in the framework of soft-collinear effective field theory (SCET), a Lagrangian describing the $t$-channel exchange of Glauber quarks in the Regge limit. The Glauber quarks are not dynamical, but are incorporated through non-local fermionic potential operators. These operators are power suppressed in $|t|/s$ relative to those describing Glauber gluon exchange, but give the first non-vanishing contributions in the Regge limit to processes such as $q\bar q \to gg$ and $q\bar q \to γγ$. They therefore represent an interesting subset of power corrections to study. The structure of the operators, which describe certain soft and collinear emissions to all orders through Wilson lines, is derived from the symmetries of the effective theory combined with constraints from power and mass dimension counting, as well as through explicit matching calculations. Lightcone singularities in the fermionic potentials are regulated using a rapidity regulator, whose corresponding renormalization group evolution gives rise to the Reggeization of the quark at the amplitude level and the BFKL equation at the cross section level. We verify this at one-loop, deriving the Regge trajectory of the quark in the $3$ color channel, as well as the leading logarithmic BFKL equation. Results in the $\bar 6$ and $15$ color channels are obtained by the simultaneous exchange of a Glauber quark and a Glauber gluon. SCET with quark and gluon Glauber operators therefore provides a framework to systematically study the structure of QCD amplitudes in the Regge limit, and derive constraints on higher order amplitudes.

A Subleading Operator Basis and Matching for $gg \to H$

The Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) is a powerful framework for studying factorization of amplitudes and cross sections in QCD. While factorization at leading power has been well studied, much less is known at subleading powers in the $λ\ll 1$ expansion. In SCET subleading soft and collinear corrections to a hard scattering process are described by power suppressed operators, which must be fixed case by case, and by well established power suppressed Lagrangians, which correct the leading power dynamics of soft and collinear radiation. Here we present a complete basis of power suppressed operators for $gg \to H$, classifying all operators which contribute to the cross section at $\mathcal{O}(λ^2)$, and showing how helicity selection rules significantly simplify the construction of the operator basis. We perform matching calculations to determine the tree level Wilson coefficients of our operators. These results are useful for studies of power corrections in both resummed and fixed order perturbation theory, and for understanding the factorization properties of gauge theory amplitudes and cross sections at subleading power. As one example, our basis of operators can be used to analytically compute power corrections for $N$-jettiness subtractions for $gg$ induced color singlet production at the LHC.

The Higgs transverse momentum spectrum with finite quark masses beyond leading order

We apply the leading-log high-energy resummation technique recently derived by some of us to the transverse momentum (pt) distribution for production of a Higgs boson in gluon fusion. We use our results to obtain information on mass-dependent corrections to this observable, which is only known at leading order when exact mass dependence is included. In the low pt region we discuss the all-order exponentiation of collinear bottom mass logarithms. In the high pt region we show that the infinite top mass approximation loses accuracy as a power of pt, while the accuracy of the high-energy approximation is approximately constant as pt grows. We argue that a good approximation to the NLO result for pt >~200 GeV can be obtained by combining the full LO result with a K-factor computed using the high-energy approximation.

Do we need N$^3$LO Parton Distributions?

We discuss the uncertainty on processes computed using next-to-next-to leading (NNLO) parton distributions (PDFs) due to the neglect of higher order perturbative corrections in the PDF determination, in the specific case of Higgs production in gluon fusion. By studying the behaviour of the perturbative series for this process, we show that this uncertainty is negligible in comparison to the theoretical uncertainty on the matrix element. We then take this as a case study for the use of the Cacciari-Houdeau method for the estimate of theoretical uncertainties, and show that the method provides an effective way of treating theoretical uncertainties on the matrtix element and the PDF on the same footing.
