The planar Lanchester model of insurgent warfare: Intricate Collateral Damage Functions and Global Bifurcation

One of the most notable aspects of mathematical modeling is that it sheds light on the complexities arising from changes in parameters and their real-world implications, thus gaining better insight into the dynamics of economic, political, and security phenomena. Moreover, modifications to mathematical modeling will set the stage for embedding new features into the system and enriching the assessment of our analysis. In the case of the Lanchester model of warfare, the introduction of the collateral damage function was an attempt to turn the model into a more realistic framework for understanding counter-insurgencies and irregular battles. In this article, we focus on addressing the impact of sophisticated collateral damage functions in a modified Lanchester model of combat, which reflects the multifaceted nature of warfare. This analysis shows the possibility of global bifurcations and their repercussions for the combat situation between two players. Finally, we assess the codimension two bifurcation analysis of our system based on the interaction between collateral damage and the effectiveness of targeting insurgents.

Dynamics of Performances in a Competitive Model

A competitive resource-consumer dynamical model is analyzed based on an integrated model of a competitive Lotka-Volterra model and a prey-predator Rosenzweig-MacArthur model that we call that LV-RM model throughout this paper. Resource growth in the absence of consumers is logistic, and competing consumers' type II Holling's functional response made the model structure more realistic. We used the normal form and the center manifold theorems for bifurcation analysis of the presented model, identified Hopf and zero-Hopf bifurcations and their directions, and discussed their biological interpretations. We hypothesized that differentiated time scales of the competing consumers' predatory that lead to asymmetry in competition are the mechanisms that promote coexistence through relaxation-oscillation dynamics. Though, other performance parameters of both competitors are the same. Graphical representation of variations of the first Lyapunov coefficient, after competition coefficients interplay, shows various dynamics with growing complexity from the periodic state towards chaotic motion like Rössler attractor. We presented simulations to visualize the theoretical results obtained through bifurcation analysis.

Controllability near a homoclinic bifurcation

Controllability properties are studied for control-affine systems depending on a parameter and with constrained control values. The uncontrolled systems in dimension two and three are subject to a homoclinic bifurcation. This generates two families of control sets depending on a parameter in the involved vector fields and the size of the control range. A new parameter given by a split function for the homoclinic bifurcation determines the behavior of these control sets. It is also shown that there are parameter regions where the uncontrolled equation has no periodic orbits, while the controlled systems have periodic solutions arbitrarily close to the homoclinic orbit
