Adaptive DOA Estimation With KL-Based Kernel Bandwidth Adaptation Under Impulsive Noise

Direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation can degrade markedly in impulsive noise, where methods relying on Gaussian or second-order statistical assumptions are particularly susceptible to large-amplitude outliers. This paper develops an adaptive DOA estimator that employs Gaussian kernel weighting to attenuate the influence of large prediction errors while adjusting the kernel bandwidth online according to a Kullback--Leibler (KL) divergence criterion. A sample-based approximation of the KL criterion yields a recursive bandwidth update that adapts the degree of outlier suppression to the observed error statistics rather than prescribing a fixed bandwidth a priori. The spatial-filter coefficients and kernel bandwidth are updated recursively, and the DOAs are recovered from the resulting spatial spectrum. Mean and mean-square analyses are developed under standard adaptive-filtering approximations to characterize the coefficient convergence and steady-state behavior. Simulation results under Gaussian-mixture impulsive noise demonstrate stable coefficient adaptation and improved DOA estimation accuracy over representative competing methods in several challenging operating regimes, with the most pronounced gains occurring at low-to-moderate signal-to-noise ratios. The results also indicate reduced sensitivity to the initial kernel bandwidth through online bandwidth adaptation.

Inner and Outer Bounds on the Secrecy Capacity of Degraded Broadcast Channels with RMSI and Transmitter CSI

This paper studies the secrecy capacity of a class of degraded broadcast channels in the presence of an external eavesdropper, where a transmitter aims to deliver two independent confidential messages to two legitimate receivers. The transmitter is assumed to have non-causal access to the channel state information (CSI), and each legitimate receiver possesses prior knowledge of the other receiver's message, referred to as receiver message side information (RMSI). We consider two distinct scenarios: complementary RMSI, where each receiver knows only the other's message, and non-complementary RMSI, where the side information does not perfectly align. For both scenarios, we derive novel inner bounds on the achievable secrecy rate region and present tight outer bounds, establishing the secrecy capacity region for the considered degraded channel settings. Unlike prior works, which primarily address general broadcast settings without secrecy constraints or omit key interactions between RMSI and CSI, our results provide a complete characterization of the secure communication limits under these conditions. Moreover, we extend our analysis to the Gaussian degraded broadcast channel, highlighting the pivotal role of CSI in enhancing secure transmission performance. Our findings demonstrate that the combination of RMSI and CSI can be strategically leveraged to expand the secrecy capacity region, thus offering new insights into secure multiuser communication system design.

Copula Function Parameter Regions in Analyzing Wireless Communications Performances

Copula functions have been widely employed in wireless communication analysis to model dependence structures and evaluate system performance. However, existing studies generally express performance metrics in terms of copula dependence parameters without explicitly characterizing their admissible regions. This letter introduces the concept of copula dependence parameter regions and investigates its significance in wireless communications. Considering a two-user wireless multiple access channel (MAC) with correlated Rayleigh fading modeled by the bivariate Farlie--Gumbel--Morgenstern (FGM) copula, explicit parameter regions are derived from communication-theoretic and probabilistic perspectives using outage probability and Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) constraints. The results show that practical communication and statistical requirements can significantly shrink the classical copula admissible interval, rendering some theoretically admissible dependence structures infeasible. Numerical examples illustrate the proposed concept and its practical implications.

Fluid Antenna-Enabled Hybrid NOMA and AirFL Networks Under Imperfect CSI and SIC

The integration of communication and computation is essential for next-generation wireless systems, especially in scenarios demanding massive connectivity and ultra-low latency. Over-the-air federated learning (AirFL), leveraging the superposition nature of wireless channels, enables fast data aggregation, while non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) offers spectrum-efficient connectivity. This paper investigates a fluid antenna (FA)-aided hybrid network, supporting hybrid users comprising both AirFL and NOMA participants. The dynamic reconfigurability of FAs offers significant potential for mitigating interference and enhancing network performance by adapting antenna positions in response to changing channel conditions. We consider practical challenges arising from imperfect channel state information (CSI) and residual interference due to imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). To jointly evaluate the learning and communication performance, a hybrid rate metric is introduced. Subsequently, we formulate a robust optimization problem that jointly minimizes the aggregation error while ensuring reliable user communication under CSI and SIC uncertainties. This joint optimization is formulated as a non-convex problem, complicated by the intricate interactions between NOMA and AirFL users and the impact of imperfect CSI and SIC. To solve this problem effectively, we reformulate the optimization as a Markov decision process and solve it using a long short-term memory deep deterministic policy gradient (LSTM-DDPG) algorithm, a memory-based approach within the realm of deep reinforcement learning. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed FA-assisted approach over fixed-antenna baselines, particularly under imperfect CSI and SIC conditions, in terms of hybrid rate performance.

Performance Analysis of Fluid Antenna-Assisted Over-the-Air Federated Learning Under Spatially Correlated Fading

Fluid antenna (FA) technology has recently emerged as an effective means of exploiting spatial diversity through position-domain reconfigurability. This paper investigates the integration of FA into over-the-air federated learning (OTA-FL) systems with the aim of improving aggregation reliability and user participation under realistic channel conditions. By dynamically selecting antenna positions, FA-equipped users can exploit additional spatial degrees of freedom to realize more favorable channel conditions, thereby increasing the probability of successful contribution to the OTA aggregation process in each communication round. We consider an uplink OTA-FL framework consisting of a single fixed-antenna access point and multiple FA-enabled users operating over spatially correlated fading channels. Unlike existing studies that primarily rely on optimization-based designs or numerical evaluations, we develop a tractable analytical framework that enables a rigorous performance characterization of FA-assisted OTA-FL. In particular, closed-form expressions are derived for the aggregation error outage probability and the expected number of participating users per round. Spatial channel correlation across FA ports is modeled using a copula-based approach, where the Clayton copula is adopted to capture lower-tail dependence relevant to worst-case fading conditions. Numerical results validate the analytical findings and demonstrate that FA-assisted OTA-FL significantly outperforms conventional fixed-antenna schemes in terms of aggregation reliability and participation efficiency, while providing insights under practical system considerations.

Copula-Based Analysis of Fluid Antenna-Assisted Over-the-Air Computation

This letter studies an uplink over-the-air computation (AirComp) framework in which multiple user equipments are equipped with fluid-antenna (FA) arrays and operate over spatially correlated fading channels. By explicitly modeling channel dependence using the Gumbel copula, closed-form analytical expressions are derived for the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the mean-squared error (MSE) of the aggregated function. The proposed analysis provides a quantitative performance characterization of AirComp under spatial correlation and provides analytical insights into the role of FA-assisted transmission in correlated wireless environments. Numerical results validate the derived expressions and show that FA deployment can substantially reduce the MSE compared with conventional fixed-antenna systems, although the achievable gain decreases as spatial correlation becomes stronger.

Robust Resource Allocation in RIS-Assisted Wireless Networks Integrating NOMA and Over-the-Air Federated Learning

This paper addresses the critical issue of spectrum scarcity and the need to support diverse services, including communication and learning tasks, by presenting a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wireless network framework that integrates non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with over-the-air federated learning (AirFL). The proposed system leverages the ability of RIS to adaptively shape wireless channels, aiming to enhance overall network performance for both communication and learning through concurrent uplink transmissions. To tackle critical challenges such as co-channel interference, imperfect channel state information (CSI), and successive interference cancellation (SIC), we develop an optimization framework that focuses on minimizing the optimality gap. This joint optimization is formulated as a non-convex problem, complicated by the intricate interactions between NOMA and AirFL users as well as the impact of imperfect CSI and SIC. To overcome these challenges and reduce the optimality gap, we reformulate the optimization problem as a Markov decision process and solve it using a long short-term memory deep deterministic policy gradient (LSTM-DDPG) algorithm, a memory-based approach within deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves faster convergence, lower variance, and improved robustness under channel uncertainty, outperforming baseline DRL algorithms such as DDPG, soft actor-critic (SAC), and advantage actor-critic (A2C).

Robust Resource Allocation for Over-the-Air Computation Networks with Fluid Antenna Array

Fluid antenna (FA) array is envisioned as a promising technology for next-generation communication systems, owing to its ability to dynamically control the antenna locations. In this paper, we apply FA array to boost the performance of over-the-air computation networks. Given that channel uncertainty will impact negatively not only the beamforming design but also the antenna location optimization, robust resource allocation is performed to minimize the mean squared error of transmitted messages. Block coordinate descent is adopted to decompose the formulated non-convex problem into three subproblems, which are iteratively solved until convergence. Numerical results show the benefits of FA array and the necessity of robust resource allocation under channel uncertainty.

Enhanced Over-the-Air Federated Learning Using AI-based Fluid Antenna System

This paper investigates an over-the-air federated learning (OTA-FL) system that employs fluid antennas (FAs) at an access point. The system enhances learning performance by leveraging the additional degrees of freedom provided by antenna mobility. We analyze the convergence of the OTA-FL system and derive the optimality gap to illustrate the influence of FAs on learning performance. With these results, we formulate a nonconvex optimization problem to minimize the optimality gap by jointly optimizing the positions of the FAs, the beamforming vector, and the transmit power allocation at each user. To address the dynamic environment, we cast this optimization problem as a Markov decision process and propose the recurrent deterministic policy gradient (RDPG) algorithm. Finally, extensive simulations show that the FA-assisted OTA-FL system outperforms systems with fixed-position antennas and that the RDPG algorithm surpasses the existing methods.

Communications Performance Analysis of Wireless Multiple Access Channel with Specially Correlated Sources

From both practical and theoretical viewpoints, performance analysis of communication systems using information-theoretic results is very important. In this study, first, we obtain a general achievable rate for a two-user wireless multiple access channel (MAC) with specially correlated sources as a more general version for continuous alphabet MACs, by extending the known discrete alphabet results to the wireless continuous alphabet version. Next, the impact of wireless channel coefficients correlation on the performance metrics using Copula theory, as the most convenient way for describing the dependence between several variables, is investigated. By applying the Farlie-Gumbel-Morgenstern (FGM) Copula function, we obtain closed-form expressions for the outage probability (OP) under positive/negative dependence conditions. It is shown that the fading correlation improves the OP for a negative dependence structure. Specifically, whenever the dependence structure tends to negative values, the OP decreases and the efficiency of the channel increases. Finally, the efficiency of the analytical results is illustrated numerically.

Channel Parameter Estimation in the Presence of Phase Noise Based on Maximum Correntropy Criterion

Oscillator output generally has phase noise causing the output power spectral density (PSD) to disperse around a Dirac delta function. In this paper, the AWGN channel is considered, where the sent signal accompanying with phase noise is added to the channel Gaussian noise and received at the receiver. Conventional channel estimation algorithms such as least mean square (LMS) and mean MSE criterion are not suitable for this channel estimation. We (i) analyze this phase noise channel estimation with information theoretic learning (ITL) criterion, i.e., maximum correntropy criterion (MCC), leading to robustness in the channel estimator's steady state behavior; and (ii) improve the convergence rate by combining MSE and MCC as a novel mixed-LMS algorithm.

The Role of Correlation in the Doubly Dirty Fading MAC with Side Information at the Transmitters

We investigate the impact of fading correlation on the performance of the doubly dirty fading multiple access channel (MAC) with non-causally known side information at transmitters. Using Copula theory, we derive closed-form expressions for the outage probability and the coverage region under arbitrary dependence conditions. We show that a positive dependence structure between the fading channel coefficients is beneficial for the system performance, as it improves the outage probability and extends the coverage region compared to the case of independent fading. Conversely, a negative dependence structure has a detrimental effect on both performance metrics.

Performance Analysis and Optimization of NOMA with HARQ for Short Packet Communications in Massive IoT

In this paper, we consider the massive non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) for short packet communications. To reduce the latency, each user can perform one re-transmission provided that the previous packet was not decoded successfully. The system performance is evaluated for both coordinated and uncoordinated transmissions. We first develop a Markov model (MM) to analyze the system dynamics and characterize the packet error rate (PER) and throughput of each user in the coordinated scenario. The power levels are then optimized for two scenarios, including the power constrained and reliability constrained scenarios. A simple yet efficient dynamic cell planning is also designed for the uncoordinated scenario. Numerical results show that both coordinated and uncoordinated NOMA-HARQ with a limited number of retransmissions can achieve the desired level of reliability with the guaranteed latency using a proper power control strategy. Results also show that NOMA-HARQ achieves a higher throughput compared to the orthogonal multiple access scheme with HARQ under the same average received power constraint at the base station.

Joint Source-Channel Coding for Broadcast Channel with Cooperating Receivers

It is known that, as opposed to point-to-point channel, separate source and channel coding is not optimal in general for sending correlated sources over multiuser channels. In some works joint source-channel coding has been investigated for some certain multiuser channels; i.g., multiple access channel (MAC) and broadcast channel (BC). In this paper, we obtain a sufficient condition for transmitting arbitrarily correlated sources over a discrete memoryless BC with cooperating receivers, where the receivers are allowed to exchange messages via a pair of noisy cooperative links. It is seen that our results is a general form of previous ones and includes them as its special cases.

A New and More General Capacity Theorem for the Gaussian Channel with Two-sided Input-Noise Dependent State Information

In this paper, a new and general version of Gaussian channel in presence of two-sided state information correlated to the channel input and noise is considered. Determining a general achievable rate for the channel and obtaining the capacity in a non-limiting case, we try to analyze and solve the Gaussian version of the Cover-Chiang theorem -as an open problem- mathematically and information-theoretically. Our capacity theorem, while including all previous theorems as its special cases, explains situations that can not be analyzed by them; for example, the effect of the correlation between the side information and the channel input on the capacity of the channel that can not be analyzed with Costa's "writing on dirty paper" theorem. Meanwhile, we try to introduce our new idea, i.e., describing the concept of "cognition" of a communicating object (transmitter, receiver, relay and so on) on some variable (channel noise, interference and so on) with the information-theoretic concept of "side information" correlated to that variable and known by the object. According to our theorem, the channel capacity is an increasing function of the mutual information of the side information and the channel noise. Therefore our channel and its capacity theorem exemplify the "cognition" of the transmitter and receiver on the channel noise based on the new description. Our capacity theorem has interesting interpretations originated from this new idea.

Coverage Region Analysis for MIMO Amplify-and-Forward Relay Channel with the Source to Destination Link

In this paper we study and analyze coverage region for half-duplex multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay channel with amplify-and-forward (AF) strategy at the relay station. By assuming mixed Rayleigh and Rician fading channels with two different relay station situations, we consider the objective of maximizing coverage region for a given transmission rate and find the optimal relay location in the sense of maximizing coverage region. using Monte Carlo simulations, the coverage region and capacity bounds are shown for different fading cases and different relay station locations. Finally, we compare our results with previous ones obtained for decode-and-forward (DF) MIMO relay channel.

Capacity Bounds and a Certain Capacity Region for Special Three-Receiver Broadcast Channels with Side Information

The fact that the results for 2-receiver broadcast channels (BCs) are not generalized to the 3-receiver ones is of information theoretical importance. In this paper we study two classes of discrete memoryless BCs with non-causal side information (SI), i.e. multilevel BC (MBC) and 3-receiver less noisy BC. First, we obtain an achievable rate region and a capacity outer bound for the MBC. Second, we prove a special capacity region for the 3-receiver less noisy BC. Third, the obtained special capacity region for the 3-receiver less noisy BC is extended to continuous alphabet fading Gaussian version. It is worth mentioning that the previous works are special cases of our works.

We investigate information-theoretic bounds for this new model according to various input distributions and also compare it numerically to the last proposed model.
