Quantum spin models of commensurate $p$-wave magnets

The $p$-wave magnet has emerged as a new type of magnetism exhibiting odd-parity, time-reversal-symmetric spin splitting in momentum space, and has attracted considerable interest as a promising platform for spintronic applications. However, the theoretical understanding of the fundamental mechanism responsible for stabilizing this phase remains limited. In this work, we identify a microscopic interacting model that realizes the $p$-wave magnet as its ground state. We first introduce a Hubbard model and derive the corresponding low-energy spin Hamiltonian. At the classical level, we find that the $p$-wave magnet is stabilized but remains energetically degenerate with competing noncoplanar states. Quantum fluctuations lift this degeneracy, selecting the $p$-wave magnet as the unique ground state. The resulting electronic structure exhibits finite spin accumulation via the Edelstein effect, highlighting the potential of $p$-wave magnetism for spintronic applications. We further discuss the relevance of our theory to quasi-two-dimensional honeycomb magnets such as Ni$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$. Our findings establish the possibility of spontaneous $p$-wave magnetism.

Intertwined Orders in a Quantum-Entangled Metal

Entanglement underpins quantum information processing and computing, yet its experimental quantification in complex, many-body condensed matter systems remains a considerable challenge. Here, we reveal a highly entangled electronic phase proximate to a quantum metal-insulator transition, identified by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering interferometry. This approach reveals that entanglement across atomic sites generates characteristic interference patterns, which our model accurately reproduces, enabling extraction of a full entanglement spectrum and resolution of the underlying quantum states. Our analysis of the pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7 demonstrates that the system undergoes pronounced quantum fluctuations in its spin, orbital and charge degrees of freedom, even in the presence of a long-range 'all-in-all-out' antiferromagnetic order. Importantly, the observed entanglement signatures facilitate the coexistence of multiple exotic symmetry-breaking orders. Complementary investigations using Raman spectroscopy corroborate the presence of these hidden orders and their emergent excitations. In particular, we observe a two-magnon-bound state below the lowest single-magnon excitation energy, which, together with split phonon modes, provides strong evidence for cubic symmetry-breaking orders of magnetic origin juxtaposed with the all-in-all-out order. Our work thus establishes a direct link between quantum entanglement and emergent unconventional orders, opening new avenues for investigating quantum materials.

Theory of Nonlinear Spectroscopy of Quantum Magnets

Two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy (2DCS) is an established method for characterizing molecules and has been proposed in the THz regime as a new tool for probing exotic excitations of quantum magnets; however, the precise nature of the coupling between pump field and spin degrees of freedom has remained unclear. Here, we develop a general response theory of 2DCS and show how magneto-electric as well as polarization couplings contribute to 2DCS in addition to the typically assumed magnetization. We propose experimental protocols to distill individual contributions, for instance from exchange-striction or spin current mechanism, when the electric field couples to terms quadratic in spin operators. We provide example calculations for the paradigmatic twisted Kitaev chain material $\mathrm{CoNb}_{2}\mathrm{O}_{6}$ and highlight the crucial role of contributions from cross-coupling between polarization and magnetic nonlinear susceptibilities. Our work paves the way for systematic studies of light-matter couplings in quantum magnets and for establishing 2DCS as a versatile tool for probing fractional excitations of exotic magnetic quantum phases.

Pair Density Waves and Supercurrent Diode Effect in Altermagnets

Metallic altermagnets are unusual collinear magnets that feature zero net magnetization with momentum-dependent spin splitting. Here, we show that this spin splitting can induce pair density wave states even in the absence of external magnetic fields. Focusing on BCS-type attractive interactions, we find the stabilization of symmetrically distinct pair density wave states depending on the chemical potential. These states include Fulde-Ferrell and Fulde-Ferrell* states, both of which break inversion symmetry. We investigate the supercurrent properties and discover non-reciprocal supercurrents for both the Fulde-Ferrell and Fulde-Ferrell* states with distinct spatial dependencies. We propose that the supercurrent diode effect can serve as an experimental tool for distinguishing between different pair density waves in metallic altermagnets and discuss the relation to material candidates.

Shedding Light on Microscopic Details: 2D Spectroscopy of 1D Quantum Ising Magnets

The identification of microscopic models describing the low-energy properties of correlated materials has been a central goal of spectroscopic measurements. We demonstrate how 2D non-linear spectroscopy can be used to distinguish effective spin models whose linear responses show similar behavior. Motivated by recent experiments on the quasi-1D Ising magnet CoNb$_2$O$_6$, we focus on two proposed models, the ferromagnetic twisted Kitaev chain with bond dependent interactions and the transverse field Ising model. The dynamical spin structure factor probed in linear response displays similar broad spectra for both models from their fermionic domain wall excitations. In sharp contrast, the 2D non-linear spectra of the two models show clear qualitative differences: those of the twisted Kitaev model contain off-diagonal peaks originating from the bond dependent interactions and transitions between different fermion bands absent in the transverse field Ising model. We discuss the different signatures of spin fractionalization in integrable and non-integrable regimes of the models and their connection to experiments.

Kekule spin-orbit dimer phase and triplon dynamics

We derive and study a spin-orbital model for ions with $d^1$ electronic configuration on a honeycomb lattice. In this system, the directional character of $t_{2g}$ orbital leads to extensively degenerate dimerized ground states. We find that additional interactions from charge transfer processes completely lift the degeneracy and stabilize the Kekule spin-orbit dimerized phase where dimers form a kagome superlattice. For such phase, the triplon band spectrum resembles the electronic band structure of the kagome lattice and becomes topologically non-trivial in the presence of inter-dimer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. As an experimental verification of the Kekule dimerized phase, we propose the thermal Hall experiment, which can directly uncover the topological profile of the corresponding triplon band spectrum.

Nonlinear spectroscopy of bound states in perturbed Ising spin chains

We study the nonlinear response of non-integrable 1D spin models using infinite matrix-product state techniques. As a benchmark and demonstration of the method, we first calculate the 2D coherent spectroscopy for the exactly soluble ferromagnetic transverse field Ising model, where excitations are freely moving domain-walls. We then investigate the distinct signatures of confined bound states by introducing a longitudinal field and observe the emergence of strong non-rephasing like signals. To interpret the observed phenomena, we use a two-kink approximation to perturbatively compute the 2D spectra. We find good agreement in comparison with the exact results of the infinite matrix-product state method in the strongly confined regime. We discuss the relevance of our results for quasi$-$1D Ising spin chain materials such as $\mathrm{CoNb}_2\mathrm{O}_6$.

Pressure Induced Topological Superconductivity in the Spin-Orbit Mott Insulator GaTa4Se8

Lacunar spinel GaTa$_4$Se$_8$ is a unique example of spin-orbit coupled Mott insulator described by molecular $j_{\text{eff}}\!=\!3/2$ states. It becomes superconducting at T$_c$=5.8K under pressure without doping. In this work, we show, this pressure-induced superconductivity is a realization of a new type topological phase characterized by spin-2 Cooper pairs. Starting from first-principles density functional calculations and random phase approximation, we construct the microscopic model and perform the detailed analysis. Applying pressure is found to trigger the virtual interband tunneling processes assisted by strong Hund coupling, thereby stabilizing a particular $d$-wave quintet channel. Furthermore, we show that its Bogoliubov quasiparticles and their surface states exhibit novel topological nature. To verify our theory, we propose unique experimental signatures that can be measured by Josephson junction transport and scanning tunneling microscope. Our findings open up new directions searching for exotic superconductivity in spin-orbit coupled materials.

Multipolar superconductivity in Luttinger semimetals

Topological superconductivity in multiband systems has received much attention due to a variety of possible exotic superconducting order parameters as well as non-trivial bulk and surface states. While the impact of coexisting magnetic order on superconductivity has been studied for many years, such as ferromagnetic superconductors, the implication of coexisting multipolar order has not been explored much despite the possibility of multipolar hidden order in a number of $f$-electron materials. In this work, we investigate topological properties of multipolar superconductors that may arise when quadrupolar local moments are coupled to conduction electrons in the multiband Luttinger semimetal. We show that the multipolar ordering of local moments leads to various multipolar superconductors with distinct topological properties. We apply these results to the quadrupolar Kondo semimetal system, PrBi, by deriving the microscopic multipolar Kondo model and examining the possible superconducting order parameters. We also discuss how to experimentally probe the topological nature of the Bogoliubov quasiparticles in distinct multipolar superconductors via doping and external pressure, especially in the context of PrBi.

Triplet-Superconductivity in Triple-Band Crossings

Multi-band superconductivity in topological semimetals are the paradigms of unconventional superconductors. Their exotic gap structures and topological properties have fascinated searching for material realizations and applications. In this paper, we focus on triple point fermions, a new type of band crossings, and we claim that their superconductivity uniquely stabilizes spin-triplet pairing. Unlike conventional superconductors and other multi band superconductors, such triplet superconductivity is the novel phenomena of triple point fermions where the spin-singlet pairing is strictly forbidden in the on-site interaction due to the Fermi statistics. We find that two distinct triplet superconductors, characterized by the presence and absence of time-reversal symmetry, are allowed which in principle can be controlled by tuning the chemical potential. For the triplet superconductor with time-reversal symmetry, we show that topologically protected nodal lines are realized. In contrast, for time-reversal broken case, the complication of topologically protected Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces emerges. Our theoretical study provides a new guidance for searching triplet superconductivities and their exotic implications.

Topological d+s wave superconductors in a multi-orbital quadratic band touching system

Realization of topological superconductors is one of the most important goals in studies of topological phases in quantum materials. In this work, we theoretically propose a novel way to attain topological superconductors with non-trivial Fermi surfaces of Bogoliubov quasiparticles. Considering the interacting Luttinger model with $j\!=\!3/2$ electrons, we investigate the dominant superconducting channels for a multi-orbital quadratic band-touching system with finite chemical potential, which breaks the particle-hole symmetry in the normal state. Notably, while the system generally favors d-wave pairing, the absence of the particle-hole symmetry necessarily induces parasitic s-wave pairing. Based on the Landau theory with $SO(3)$ symmetry, we demonstrate that two kinds of topological superconductors are energetically favored; uniaxial nematic phase with parasitic $s$ wave pairing ($d_{(3z^2-r^2)}\!+\!s$) and time-reversal-symmetry broken phase with parasitic $s$ wave pairing ($d_{(3z^2-r^2,xy)}\!+\!id_{x^2-y^2}\!+\!s$). These superconductors contain either nodal lines or Fermi pockets of gapless Bogoliubov quasiparticles and moreover exhibit topological winding numbers $\pm2$, leading to non-trivial surface states such as drumhead-like surface states or Fermi arcs. We discuss applications of our theory to relevant families of materials, especially half-heusler compound YPtBi, and suggest possible future experiments.

Discovery of new magnetic orders on pyrochlore spinels

Frustration in spin system can give rise to unique ordered states and as a consequence several physical phenomena are expected such as multiferroics, high temperature superconductors and anomalous hall effect. Here we report the "new magnetic orders" induced by anisotropic spin exchanges on pyrochlore spinels as the interplay of spin orbit coupling and geometrical frustration. Due to complicated superexchange paths of B-site spinels, we claim that anisotropic interaction between next-nearest neighbors play an important role. Based on the systematic studies of generic spin model, we argue that several classical spin states can be explored in spinel systems; local XY state, all-in all-out state, Palmer-Chalker state and coplanar spiral state. In addition, we reveal new types of magnetic phases with finite ordering wavevectors, labeled as 'octagonal (prism)' state and '(distorted) cubic' states. When the 'octagonal prism' state is stabilized, non-zero scalar spin chirality induces alternating net current in addition to finite orbital current and orbital magnetization even in Mott insulators. Finally, we also discuss the relevance of 'distorted cubic' state to the magnetic order of spinel compound GeCo2O4.
