Airy process with wanderers, KPZ fluctuations, and a deformation of the Tracy--Widom GOE distribution

We study the distribution of the supremum of the Airy process with $m$ wanderers minus a parabola, or equivalently the limit of the rescaled maximal height of a system of $N$ non-intersecting Brownian bridges as $N\to\infty$, where the first $N-m$ paths start and end at the origin and the remaining $m$ go between arbitrary positions. The distribution provides a $2m$-parameter deformation of the Tracy--Widom GOE distribution, which is recovered in the limit corresponding to all Brownian paths starting and ending at the origin. We provide several descriptions of this distribution function: (i) A Fredholm determinant formula; (ii) A formula in terms of Painlevé II functions; (iii) A representation as a marginal of the KPZ fixed point with initial data given as the top path in a stationary system of reflected Brownian motions with drift; (iv) A characterization as the solution of a version of the Bloemendal--Virag PDE (arXiv:1011.1877, arXiv:1109.3704) for spiked Tracy--Widom distributions; (v) A representation as a solution of the KdV equation. We also discuss connections with a model of last passage percolation with boundary sources.

Interacting partially directed self-avoiding walk: a probabilistic perspective

We review some recent results obtained in the framework of the 2-dimensional Interacting Self-Avoiding Walk (ISAW). After a brief presentation of the rigorous results that have been obtained so far for ISAW we focus on the Interacting Partially Directed Self-Avoiding Walk (IPDSAW), a model introduced in Zwanzig and Lauritzen (1968) to decrease the mathematical complexity of ISAW. In the first part of the paper, we discuss how a new probabilistic approach based on a random walk representation (see Nguyen and Pétrélis (2013)) allowed for a sharp determination of the asymptotics of the free energy close to criticality (see Carmona, Nguyen and Pétrélis (2016)). Some scaling limits of IPDSAW were conjectured in the physics literature (see e.g. Brak et al. (1993)). We discuss here the fact that all limits are now proven rigorously, i.e., for the extended regime in Carmona and Pétrélis (2016), for the collapsed regime in Carmona, Nguyen and Pétrélis (2016) and at criticality in Carmona and Pétrélis (2017a). The second part of the paper starts with the description of four open questions related to physically relevant extensions of IPDSAW. Among such extensions is the Interacting Prudent Self-Avoiding Walk (IPSAW) whose configurations are those of the 2-dimensional prudent walk. We discuss the main results obtained in Pétrélis and Torri (2016+) about IPSAW and in particular the fact that its collapse transition is proven to exist rigorously.

Extreme statistics of non-intersecting Brownian paths

We consider finite collections of $N$ non-intersecting Brownian paths on the line and on the half-line with both absorbing and reflecting boundary conditions (corresponding to Brownian excursions and reflected Brownian motions) and compute in each case the joint distribution of the maximal height of the top path and the location at which this maximum is attained. The resulting formulas are analogous to the ones obtained in [MFQR13] for the joint distribution of $\mathcal{M}={\rm max}_{x\in\mathbb{R}}\{\mathcal{A}_2(x)-x^2\}$ and $\mathcal{T}={\rm argmax}_{x\in\mathbb{R}}\{\mathcal{A}_2(x)-x^2\}$, where $\mathcal{A}_2$ is the Airy$_2$ process, and we use them to show that in the three cases the joint distribution converges, as $N\to\infty$, to the joint distribution of $\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathcal{T}$. In the case of non-intersecting Brownian bridges on the line, we also establish small deviation inequalities for the argmax which match the tail behavior of $\mathcal{T}$. Our proofs are based on the method introduced in [CQR13,BCR15] for obtaining formulas for the probability that the top line of these line ensembles stays below a given curve, which are given in terms of the Fredholm determinant of certain "path-integral" kernels.

Non-intersecting Brownian bridges and the Laguerre Orthogonal Ensemble

We show that the squared maximal height of the top path among $N$ non-intersecting Brownian bridges starting and ending at the origin is distributed as the top eigenvalue of a random matrix drawn from the Laguerre Orthogonal Ensemble. This result can be thought of as a discrete version of K. Johansson's result that the supremum of the Airy$_2$ process minus a parabola has the Tracy-Widom GOE distribution, and as such it provides an explanation for how this distribution arises in models belonging to the KPZ universality class with flat initial data. The result can be recast in terms of the probability that the top curve of the stationary Dyson Brownian motion hits an hyperbolic cosine barrier.

A variational formula for the free energy of the partially directed polymer collapse

Long linear polymers in dilute solutions are known to undergo a collapse transition from a random coil (expand itself) to a compact ball (fold itself up) when the temperature is lowered, or the solvent quality deteriorates. A natural model for this phenomenon is a 1+1 dimensional self-interacting and partially directed self-avoiding walk. In this paper, we develop a new method to study the partition function of this model, from which we derive a variational formula for the free energy. This variational formula allows us to prove the existence of the collapse transition and to identify the critical temperature in a simple way. We also prove that the order of the collapse transition is 3/2.
