Quantum 120-degree model on pyrochlore lattice: orbital ordering in MnV2O4

We present an analytical model of orbital ordering in vanadium spinel MnV2O4. The model is based on recent first-principles calculation indicating a strong trigonal distortion at the vanadium sites of this compound [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 216405 (2009)]. At the single-ion level, the trigonal crystal field leaves a doubly degenerate atomic ground state and breaks the approximate rotational symmetry of t2g orbitals. We find that the effective interaction between the low-energy doublets is described by a quantum antiferromagnetic 120-degree model on the pyrochlore lattice. We obtain the classical ground state and show its stability against quantum fluctuations. The corresponding orbital order consisting of two inequivalent orbital chains is consistent with the experimentally observed tetragonal symmetry. A periodic modulation of electron density function along orbital chains is shown to arise from the staggering of local trigonal axes. In the presence of orbital order, single-ion spin anisotropy arising from relativistic spin-orbit interaction stabilizes the experimentally observed orthogonal magnetic structure.

Model for frustrated spin-orbital chains: application to CaV2O4

Motivated by recent interest in quasi-one-dimensional compound CaV2O4, we study the ground states of a spin-orbital chain characterized by an Ising-like orbital Hamiltonian and frustrated interactions between S=1 spins. The on-site spin-orbit interaction and Jahn-Teller effect compete with inter-site superexchange leading to a rich phase diagram in which an antiferro-orbital phase is separated from the orbital paramagnet by a continuous Ising transition. Two distinct spin liquids depending on the underlying orbital order are found in the limit of small spin-orbit coupling. In the opposite limit, the zigzag chain behaves as a spin-2 chain with Ising anisotropy. The implications for CaV2O4 are discussed.

Large-J approach to strongly coupled spin-orbital systems

We present a novel approach to study the ground state and elementary excitations in compounds where spins and orbitals are entangled by on-site relativistic spin-orbit interaction. The appropriate degrees of freedom are localized states with an effective angular momentum J. We generalize J to arbitrary large values while maintaining the delicate spin-orbital entanglement. After projecting the inter-site exchange interaction to the manifold of effective spins, a systematic 1/J expansion of the effective Hamiltonian is realized using the Holstein-Primakoff transformation. Applications to representative compounds Sr2IrO4 and particularly vanadium spinels AV2O4 are discussed.

Partial order from disorder in a classical pyrochlore antiferromagnet

We investigate theoretically the phase diagram of a classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice perturbed by a weak second-neighbor interaction J_2. The huge ground state degeneracy of the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg spins is lifted by J_2 and a magnetically ordered ground state sets in upon approaching zero temperature. We have found a new, partially ordered phase with collinear spins at finite temperatures for a ferromagnetic J_2. In addition to a large nematic order parameter, this intermediate phase also exhibits a layered structure and a bond order that breaks the sublattice symmetry. Thermodynamic phase boundaries separating it from the fully disordered and magnetically ordered states scale as 1.87 J_2 S^2 and 0.26 J_2 S^2 in the limit of small J_2. The phase transitions are discontinuous. We analytically examine the local stability of the collinear state and obtain a boundary T ~ J_2^2/J_1 in agreement with Monte Carlo simulations.

Dynamics of domain walls in magnetic nanostrips

We express dynamics of domain walls in ferromagnetic nanowires in terms of collective coordinates generalizing Thiele's steady-state results. For weak external perturbations the dynamics is dominated by a few soft modes. The general approach is illustrated on the example of a vortex wall relevant to recent experiments with flat nanowires. A two-mode approximation gives a quantitatively accurate description of both the steady viscous motion of the wall in weak magnetic fields and its oscillatory behavior in moderately high fields above the Walker breakdown.

Broken parity and a chiral ground state in the frustrated magnet CdCr2O4

We present a model describing the lattice distortion and incommensurate magnetic order in the spinel CdCr2O4, a good realization of the Heisenberg "pyrochlore" antiferromagnet. The magnetic frustration is relieved through the spin-Peierls distortion of the lattice involving a phonon doublet with odd parity. The distortion stablizes a collinear magnetic order with the propagation wavevector q=2π(0,0,1). The lack of inversion symmetry makes the crystal structure chiral. The handedness is transferred to magnetic order by the relativistic spin-orbit coupling: the collinear state is twisted into a long spiral with the spins in the ac plane and q shifted to 2π(0,δ,1).

Generation of coherent acoustic phonons in piezoelectric semiconductor heterostructures

We review some experimental and theoretical aspects of coherent acoustic phonon generation in piezoelectric semiconductor multiple quantum wells. In order to model more advanced and complicated nano-acoustic devices, a macroscopic continuum theory for the generation and propagation of coherent acoustic phonons in piezoelectric semiconductor heterostructures is presented. The macroscopic approach is applicable in the coherent regime, and can be easily utilized to study coherent acoustic devices based on piezoelectric semiconductor heterosutructures. For each phonon mode, the corresponding coherent acoustic field obeys a loaded string equation. The driven force has contributions from the piezoelectric and deformation potential couplings. We applied the theory to model the generation of coherent longitudinal acoustic phonons in (0001)-oriented InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells. The numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental ones. By using the macroscopic theory, we also investigated the crystal-orientation effects on the generation of coherent acoustic phonons in wurtzite multiple quantum wells. It was found that coherent transverse acoustic phonons dominate the generation for certain orientation angles.

Fractional vortices and composite domain walls in flat nanomagnets

We provide a simple explanation of complex magnetic patterns observed in ferromagnetic nanostructures. To this end we identify elementary topological defects in the field of magnetization: ordinary vortices in the bulk and vortices with half-integer winding numbers confined to the edge. Domain walls found in experiments and numerical simulations in strips and rings are composite objects containing two or more of the elementary defects.
