Features and heterogeneities in growing network models

Many complex networks from the World-Wide-Web to biological networks are growing taking into account the heterogeneous features of the nodes. The feature of a node might be a discrete quantity such as a classification of a URL document as personal page, thematic website, news, blog, search engine, social network, ect. or the classification of a gene in a functional module. Moreover the feature of a node can be a continuous variable such as the position of a node in the embedding space. In order to account for these properties, in this paper we provide a generalization of growing network models with preferential attachment that includes the effect of heterogeneous features of the nodes. The main effect of heterogeneity is the emergence of an "effective fitness" for each class of nodes, determining the rate at which nodes acquire new links. The degree distribution exhibits a multiscaling behaviour analogous to the the fitness model. This property is robust with respect to variations in the model, as long as links are assigned through effective preferential attachment. Beyond the degree distribution, in this paper we give a full characterization of the other relevant properties of the model. We evaluate the clustering coefficient and show that it disappears for large network size, a property shared with the Barabási-Albert model. Negative degree correlations are also present in the studied class of models, along with non-trivial mixing patterns among features. We therefore conclude that both small clustering coefficients and disassortative mixing are outcomes of the preferential attachment mechanism in general growing networks.

Spin imbalance effect on Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrel state

We study spin imbalance effects on the Larkin-Ovchinikov-Fulde-Ferrel (LOFF) state relevant for superconductors under a strong magnetic field and spin polarized ultracold Fermi gas. We obtain the exact solution for the condensates with arbitrary spin imbalance and the fermion spectrum perturbatively in the presence of small spin imbalance. We also obtain fermion zero mode exactly without perturbation.

Properties of neutrality tests based on allele frequency spectrum

One of the main necessities for population geneticists is the availability of statistical tools that enable to accept or reject the neutral Wright-Fisher model with high power. A number of statistical tests have been developed to detect specific deviations from the null frequency spectrum in different directions (i.e., Tajima's D, Fu and Li's F and D test, Fay and Wu's H). Recently, a general framework was proposed to generate all neutrality tests that are linear functions of the frequency spectrum. In this framework, a family of optimal tests was developed to have almost maximum power against a specific alternative evolutionary scenario. Following these developments, in this paper we provide a thorough discussion of linear and nonlinear neutrality tests. First, we present the general framework for linear tests and emphasize the importance of the property of scalability with the sample size (that is, the results of the tests should not depend on the sample size), which, if missing, can guide to errors in data interpretation. The motivation and structure of linear optimal tests are discussed. In a further generalization, we develop a general framework for nonlinear neutrality tests and we derive nonlinear optimal tests for polynomials of any degree in the frequency spectrum.

On the moduli space of semilocal strings and lumps

We study BPS non-abelian semilocal vortices in U(Nc) gauge theory with Nf flavors, Nf > Nc, in the Higgs phase. The moduli space for arbitrary winding number is described using the moduli matrix formalism. We find a relation between the moduli spaces of the semilocal vortices in a Seiberg-like dual pairs of theories, U(Nc) and U(Nf-Nc). They are two alternative regularizations of a "parent" non-Hausdorff space, which tend to the same moduli space of sigma-model lumps in the infinite gauge coupling limits. We examine the normalizability of the zero-modes and find the somewhat surprising phenomenon that the number of normalizable zero-modes, dynamical fields in the effective action, depends on the point of the moduli space we are considering. We find, in the lump limit, an effective action on the vortex worldsheet, which we compare to that found by Shifman and Yung.

Non-Abelian duality from vortex moduli: a dual model of color-confinement

It is argued that the dual transformation of non-Abelian monopoles occurring in a system with gauge symmetry breaking G -> H is to be defined by setting the low-energy H system in Higgs phase, so that the dual system is in confinement phase. The transformation law of the monopoles follows from that of monopole-vortex mixed configurations in the system (with a large hierarchy of energy scales, v_1 >> v_2) G -> H -> 0, under an unbroken, exact color-flavor diagonal symmetry H_{C+F} \sim {\tilde H}. The transformation property among the regular monopoles characterized by π_2(G/H), follows from that among the non-Abelian vortices with flux quantized according to π_1(H), via the isomorphism π_1(G) \sim π_1(H) / π_2(G/H). Our idea is tested against the concrete models -- softly-broken {\cal N}=2 supersymmetric SU(N), SO(N) and USp(2N) theories, with appropriate number of flavors. The results obtained in the semiclassical regime (at v_1 >> v_2 >> Λ) of these models are consistent with those inferred from the fully quantum-mechanical low-energy effective action of the systems (at v_1, v_2 \sim Λ).

Universal Reconnection of Non-Abelian Cosmic Strings

We show that local/semilocal strings in Abelian/non-Abelian gauge theories with critical couplings always reconnect classically in collision, by using moduli space approximation. The moduli matrix formalism explicitly identifies a well-defined set of the vortex moduli parameters. Our analysis of generic geodesic motion in terms of those shows right-angle scattering in head-on collision of two vortices, which is known to give the reconnection of the strings.

Non-Abelian Vortices of Higher Winding Numbers

We make a detailed study of the moduli space of winding number two (k=2) axially symmetric vortices (or equivalently, of co-axial composite of two fundamental vortices), occurring in U(2) gauge theory with two flavors in the Higgs phase, recently discussed by Hashimoto-Tong (hep-th/0506022) and Auzzi-Shifman-Yung (hep-th/0511150). We find that it is a weighted projective space WCP^2_(2,1,1)=CP^2/Z_2. This manifold contains an A_1-type (Z_2) orbifold singularity even though the full moduli space including the relative position moduli is smooth. The SU(2) transformation properties of such vortices are studied. Our results are then generalized to U(N) gauge theory with N flavors, where the internal moduli space of k=2 axially symmetric vortices is found to be a weighted Grassmannian manifold. It contains singularities along a submanifold.

Nonabelian Confinement near Nontrivial Conformal Vacua

We discuss some aspects of confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking in the so-called nonabelian Argyres-Douglas vacua, which occur very generally in supersymmetric theories. These systems are characterized by strongly-coupled nonabelian monopoles and dyons; confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking are caused by the condensation of monopole composites, rather than by condensation of single weakly-coupled monopoles. In general, there are strong constraints on which kind of monopoles can appear as the infrared degrees of freedom, related to the proper realization of the global symmetry of the theory. Drawing analogies to some of the phenomena found here, we make a speculation on the ground state of the standard QCD.

Light Nonabelian Monopoles and Generalized r-Vacua in Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

We study a class of N=1 supersymmetric U(N) gauge theories and find that there exist vacua in which the low-energy magnetic effective gauge group contains multiple nonabelian factors, \prod_i SU(r_i), supported by light monopoles carrying the associated nonabelian charges. These nontrivially generalize the physics of the so-called r-vacua found in softly broken N=2 supersymmetric SU(N) QCD, with an effective low-energy gauge group SU(r) \times U(1)^{N-r}. The matching between classical and quantum (r_{1}, r_{2},...) vacua gives an interesting hint about the nonabelian duality.
