Magnetic clusters in the paramagnetic phase of a high-temperature ferromagnetic metal-organic framework

Owing to their exceptional chemical and electronic tunability, metal-organic frameworks can be designed to develop magnetic ground states making a range of applications feasible, from magnetic gas separation to the implementation of lightweight, rare-earth free permanent magnets. However, the typically weak exchange interactions mediated by the diamagnetic organic ligands result in ordering temperatures confined to the cryogenic limit. The itinerant magnetic ground state realized in the chromium-based framework Cr(tri)$_{2}$(CF$_{3}$SO$_{3}$)$_{0.33}$ (Htri, $1H$-$1$,$2$,$3$-triazole) is a remarkable exception to this trend, showing a robust ferromagnetic behavior almost at ambient conditions. Here, we use dc SQUID magnetometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, and ferromagnetic resonance to study the magnetic state realized in this material. We highlight several thermally-activated relaxation mechanisms for the nuclear magnetization due to the tendency of electrons towards localization at low temperatures as well as the rotational dynamics of the charge-balancing triflate ions confined within the pores. Most interestingly, we report the development within the paramagnetic regime of mesoscopic magnetic correlated clusters whose slow dynamics in the MHz range are tracked by the nuclear moments, in agreement with the highly unconventional nature of the magnetic transition detected by dc SQUID magnetometry. We discuss the similarity between the clustered phase in the paramagnetic phase and the magnetoelectronic phase segregation leading to colossal magnetoresistance in manganites and cobaltites. These results demonstrate that high-temperature magnetic metal-organic frameworks can serve as a versatile platform for exploring correlated electron phenomena in low-density, chemically tunable materials.

Superconductivity induced by gate-driven hydrogen intercalation in the charge-density-wave compound 1T-TiSe2

Hydrogen (H) plays a key role in the near-to-room temperature superconductivity of hydrides at megabar pressures. This suggests that H doping could have similar effects on the electronic and phononic spectra of materials at ambient pressure as well. Here, we demonstrate the non-volatile control of the electronic ground state of titanium diselenide (1T-TiSe$_2$) via ionic liquid gating-driven H intercalation. This protonation induces a superconducting phase, observed together with a charge-density wave through most of the phase diagram, with nearly doping-independent transition temperatures. The H-induced superconducting phase is possibly gapless-like and multi-band in nature, in contrast with those induced in TiSe$_2$ via copper, lithium, and electrostatic doping. This unique behavior is supported by ab initio calculations showing that high concentrations of H dopants induce a full reconstruction of the bandstructure, although with little coupling between electrons and high-frequency H phonons. Our findings provide a promising approach for engineering the ground state of transition metal dichalcogenides and other layered materials via gate-controlled protonation.

Cluster charge-density-wave glass in hydrogen-intercalated TiSe$_{2}$

The topotactic intercalation of transition-metal dichalcogenides with atomic or molecular ions acts as an efficient knob to tune the electronic ground state of the host compound. A representative material in this sense is 1$T$-TiSe$_{2}$, where the electric-field-controlled intercalations of lithium or hydrogen trigger superconductivity coexisting with the charge-density wave phase. Here, we use the nuclear magnetic moments of the intercalants in hydrogen-intercalated 1$T$-TiSe$_{2}$ as local probes for nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. We argue that fluctuating mesoscopic-sized domains nucleate already at temperatures higher than the bulk critical temperature to the charge-density wave phase and display cluster-glass-like dynamics in the MHz range tracked by the $^{1}$H nuclear moments. Additionally, we observe a well-defined independent dynamical process at lower temperatures that we associate with the intrinsic properties of the charge-density wave state. In particular, we ascribe the low-temperature phenomenology to the collective phason-like motion of the charge-density wave being hindered by structural defects and chemical impurities and resulting in a localized oscillating motion.

Entanglement between a muon spin and $I>\frac{1}{2}$ nuclear spins

We report on the first example of quantum coherence between the spins of muons and quadrupolar nuclei. We observe this effect in vanadium intermetallic compounds which adopt the A15 crystal structure, and whose members include all technologically dominant superconductors. The entangled states are extremely sensitive to the local structural and electronic environments through the electric field gradient at the quadrupolar nuclei. This case-study demonstrates that positive muons can be used as a quantum sensing tool to probe also structural and charge related phenomena in materials, even in the absence of magnetic order.

Complex vortex-antivortex dynamics in the magnetic superconductor EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_{2}$

We report on the investigation of the magnetic superconductor EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_{2}$ based on muon-spin spectroscopy and ac magnetic susceptibility ($χ$) measurements. The dependence of the internal field at the muon site on temperature is indicative of a ferromagnetic ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ magnetic moments and only the conventional magnon scattering governs the longitudinal relaxation rate at low temperatures. At the same time, we observe a rich phenomenology for the imaginary component of the susceptibility $χ^{\prime\prime}$ by means of both standard ac susceptibility and a novel technique based on a microwave coplanar waveguide resonator. In particular, we detect activated trends for several features in $χ^{\prime\prime}$ over frequencies spanning ten orders of magnitude. We interpret our results in terms of the complex dynamics of vortices and antivortices influenced by the underlying structure of magnetic domains.

Magnetically-induced local lattice anomalies and low-frequency nematic fluctuations in the Mott insulator La$_2$O$_3$Fe$_2$Se$_2$

We report a study of the Mott insulator La$_2$O$_3$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ by means of $^{139}$La nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR). The NQR spectra evidence a single La site in the paramagnetic phase and two inequivalent La sites, La1 and La2, in the antiferromagnetically-ordered phase (Néel temperature $T_{\rm{N}} \simeq 90$ K). These two sites are characterized by different quadrupole couplings, indicative of distinct lattice and/or charge configurations likely segregated in domains. The dependence of the quadrupole coupling for La2 on temperature suggests that the magnetic order parameter drives the structural distortion. The nuclear spin-lattice and transverse relaxation rates, $1/T_1$ and $1/T_2$, evidence fluctuations in the paramagnetic phase with characteristic frequencies well below the Heisenberg exchange frequency, likely associated with nematic fluctuations.

Monopole-limited nucleation of magnetism in Eu$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$

We present an in-depth analysis of muon-spin spectroscopy measurements of Eu$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ under the effect of the Eu$_{1-x}$Bi$_{x}$ isovalent and diamagnetic substitution as well as of external pressure. Our results evidence an anomalously slow increase of the magnetic volume fraction upon decreasing temperature only for stoichiometric Eu$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$, pointing towards highly unconventional properties of the magnetic phase developing therein. We argue that magnetism in Eu$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ develops based on the nucleation of magnetic droplets at $T_{N}$, whose successive growth is limited by the need of a continuous generation of magnetic hedgehog monopoles.

Iron-based superconductors: tales from the nuclei

High-temperature superconductivity in Fe-based pnictides and chalcogenides has been one of the most significant recent discoveries in condensed matter physics and has attracted remarkable attention in the last decade. These materials are characterized by a complex fermiology and, as a result, feature a wide range of electronic properties as a function of different tuning parameters such as chemical doping, temperature and pressure. Along the path towards the comprehension of the physical mechanisms underlying this rich phenomenology, NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) and NQR (nuclear quadrupole resonance) have played a role of capital importance that we review in this work. In particular, we address how NMR has contributed to the current understanding of the main regions of the electronic phase diagram of Fe-based pnictides, that is, the -- sometimes coexisting -- antiferromagnetic spin-density wave and superconducting states. We evidence the unique capability of NMR as local-probe technique of investigating the effect of quenched disorder and chemical impurities. Then, we review the NMR signatures of low-frequency fluctuations associated with the development of electronic nematicity as well as with the motion of superconducting flux lines. Finally, we discuss recent contributions of NMR and NQR which evidence an intrinsically inhomogeneous electronic charge distribution as well as an orbitally-selective behaviour.

Anomalous lattice contraction and emergent electronic phases in Bi-doped Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$

We study the pyrochlore series (Eu$_{1-x}$Bi$_x$)$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ for $ 0 \leq x \leq 1$. We show that for small $x$, the lattice undergoes an anomalous contraction but the all-in/all-out and metal-to-insulator transitions remain robust, and the resistivity approaches a $1/T$ dependence at low-T, suggesting proximity to the Weyl semimetallic phase, as previously predicted theoretically. At the boundary between Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and Bi$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ a qualitatively different ground state emerges, which is characterized by its unusual metallic behavior and absence of magnetic ordering at least down to $0.02$ K.

Effects of quantum impurity spins on the magnetic properties of zigzag and linear spin chains

We investigated the magnetic ground state and low-energy excitations of the spin chains compounds SrCuO$_{2}$ (zigzag chains) and Sr$_{2}$CuO$_{3}$ (linear chains) in the presence of quantum impurities induced by lightly doping ($\leq 1 \%$) with Zn$^{2+}$ ($S = 0$), Co$^{2+}$ ($S =1/2$) and Ni$^{2+}$ ($S = 1$) impurities at the Cu$^{2+}$ site. We show that the ground states and the nature of low-lying excitations (i.e., gapped or gapless) depend on the spin state and symmetry of the defects. For Ni doped chains a spin gap is observed but for Zn and Co doping the excitations remain gapless. Co-doped chains exhibit magnetic order with critical temperatures significantly enhanced compared to those of the pristine compounds. In the specific case of 1 \% Co impurities, the linear chains exhibit long-range order below 11 K, while the zigzag chain is characterized by a quasi-long range ordered phase below 6 K with correlation lengths of about 12\textit{a} and 40\textit{c} units along the crystal axes \textit{a} and \textit{c}, respectively. The different magnetic behaviours of these two compounds with comparable intra- and interchain couplings underpin the role of spin frustration in the zigzag chains.

Direct evidence for the emergence of a pressure induced nodal superconducting gap in the iron-based superconductor Ba_0.65Rb_0.35Fe_2As_2

Identifying the superconducting (SC) gap structure of the iron-based high-temperature superconductors (Fe-HTS's) remains a key issue for the understanding of superconductivity in these materials. In contrast to other unconventional superconductors, in the Fe-HTS's both $d$-wave and extended s-wave pairing symmetries are close in energy, with the latter believed to be generally favored over the former. Probing the proximity between these very different SC states and identifying experimental parameters that can tune them, are of central interest. Here we report high-pressure muon spin rotation experiments on the temperature-dependent magnetic penetration depth (lambda) in the optimally doped Fe-HTS Ba_0.65Rb_0.35Fe_2As_2. At ambient pressure this material is known to be a nodeless s-wave superconductor. Upon pressure a strong decrease of (lambda) is observed, while the SC transition temperature remains nearly constant. More importantly, the low-temperature behavior of (1/lambda^{2}) changes from exponential saturation at zero pressure to a power-law with increasing pressure, providing unambiguous evidence that hydrostatic pressure promotes nodal SC gaps. Comparison to microscopic models favors a d-wave over a nodal s^{+-}-wave pairing as the origin of the nodes. Our results provide a new route of understanding the complex topology of the SC gap in Fe-HTS's.

Effect of external pressure on the magnetic properties of LnFeAsO (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Sm)

We investigate the effect of external pressure on magnetic order in undoped LnFeAsO (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, La) by using muon-spin relaxation measurements and ab-initio calculations. Both magnetic transition temperature $T_m$ and Fe magnetic moment decrease with external pressure. The effect is observed to be lanthanide dependent with the strongest response for Ln = La and the weakest for Ln = Sm. The trend is qualitatively in agreement with our DFT calculations. The same calculations allow us to assign a value of 0.68(2) $μ_B$ to the Fe moment, obtained from an accurate determination of the muon sites. Our data further show that the magnetic lanthanide order transitions do not follow the simple trend of Fe, possibly as a consequence of the different $f$-electron overlap.

Magnetic properties of spin diluted iron pnictides from muSR and NMR in LaFe1-xRuxAsO

The effect of isoelectronic substitutions on the microscopic properties of LaFe1-xRuxAsO, for 0< x< 0.8, has been investigated by means of muSR and 139La NMR. It was found that Ru substitution causes a progressive reduction of the Nèel temperature (T_N) and of the magnetic order parameter without leading to the onset of superconductivity. The temperature dependence of 139La nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 can be suitably described within a two-band model. One band giving rise to the spin density wave ground-state, while the other one is characterized by weakly correlated electrons. Fe for Ru substitution yields to a progressive decrease of the density of states at the Fermi level close to the one derived from band structure calculations. The reduction of T_N with doping follows the predictions of the J_1-J_2 model on a square lattice, which appears to be an effective framework to describe the magnetic properties of the spin density wave ground-state.
