Performance Optimization of Short Reach Optical Interconnects based on Direct Detection

Short-reach optical interconnects are evolving toward data rates beyond 400 Gb/s per lane, driven by the bandwidth and energy-efficiency requirements of AI-enabled datacenter networks. At these operating speeds, channel impairments, device nonlinearities, and hardware constraints limit the effectiveness of conventional transceiver design and digital signal processing (DSP). This paper presents a unified framework for the optimization of direct-detection optical interconnects, encompassing digital surrogate modeling, receiver-side DSP optimization, and end-to-end (E2E) transceiver learning. The proposed formulation provides a common perspective for model-based and machine-learning-based approaches, including linear and nonlinear equalization, lookup tables, decision trees, neural-network receivers, and E2E optimization. Their performance is discussed together with computational complexity and hardware implementation aspects, highlighting the associated trade-offs. We show, through simulations and experimental validations, that for a 40~Gb/s 10~km link, decision trees can outperform by 0.5--1~dB conventional linear equalization, with negligible hardware requirements. Moreover, we show that an E2E technique based on transformers can provide a gain up to 6~dB, highlighting the potential of joint transceiver optimization to improve the performance of next-generation short-reach optical links.

Source-device-independent monolithically integrated QRNG in a black box with generation rate in excess of 30 Gbit/s

Quantum mechanics provides a secure means of generating random numbers, with applications in fields spanning scientific simulation to cryptography. The first source-device-independent monolithically integrated quantum random number generator is reported. With a generation rate of 35 Gbit/s, the device is based on an InP photonic integrated circuit with a quantum vacuum state entropy source, sampled by heterodyne coherent detection using an optical local oscillator. The entire device is conveniently housed in a black box and includes all the necessary driving and signal conditioning electronics, with electrical interfaces only; the exhibited security, compactness, and fast generation rate make the generator suitable for applications in QKD.

A Silicon Photonic 32-Input Coherent Combiner for Turbulence Mitigation in Free Space Optics Links

A photonic integrated circuit (PIC) for the coherent combination of 32 input optical signals into a single output fiber is reported. The PIC was fabricated using a low-loss thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process and packaged with 32 input and 1 output fibers. The basic building block is a 2x2 Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with an external (to the MZI branches) and an internal thermal phase shifter, and a bandwidth in excess of 80 kHz. The PIC monolithically integrates 31 MZIs and 31 germanium photodetectors, and is suitable in principle for turbulence mitigation in LEO-ground and horizontal free space optics links. Improvements to the device for the coherent combination of 64 inputs and for the reduction of insertion losses are also discussed

High-speed Source-Device-Independent Quantum Random Number Generator on a Chip

A wide range of applications require, by hypothesis, to have access to a high-speed, private, and genuine random source. Quantum Random Number Generators (QRNGs) are currently the sole technology capable of producing true randomness. However, the bulkiness of current implementations significantly limits their adoption. In this work, we present a high-performance source-device independent QRNG leveraging a custom made integrated photonic chip. The proposed scheme exploits the properties of a heterodyne receiver to enhance security and integration to promote spatial footprint reduction while simplifying its implementation. This characteristics could represents a significant advancement toward the development of generators better suited to meet the demands of portable and space applications. The system can deliver secure random numbers at a rate greater than 20 Gbps with a reduced spatial and power footprint.
