Obstructions to exact regularity of sublaplacians

Let $M$ be a closed manifold equipped with a collection of smooth real vector fields $X_1,\ldots, X_k$ and a smooth measure $μ$. Let $P:=\sum_j X_j^\dagger X_j $ be the associated sublaplacian. Under the assumption that each pair of points of $M$ can be connected by a path obtained by joining integral curves of the vector fields, the equation \[ Pu=f \] admits unique zero-average solutions $u$ in the natural energy space, for all zero average data $f\in L^2$. We say that exact regularity holds for the above equation if $u\in H^k(M)$ whenever $f\in H^k(M)$, where $H^k(M)$ is the $L^2$ based Sobolev space of any order $k\in \mathbb{N}$. We investigate how the presence of a characteristic submanifold, namely a submanifold tangent to all vector fields $X_j$, may cause a failure of exact regularity. We prove that this indeed happens for a class of "worm sublaplacians", which are real analogues of Kohn Laplacians on Diederich--Fornaess worm domains, of interest in several complex variables. Our main tool is a scaling lemma inspired by work of Barrett and Christ on the $\bar\partial$-Neumann problem.

Exponential improvements in Rado's covering problem

Let $B^d$ denote the $d$-dimensional Euclidean ball of unit radius. What is the largest constant $f(B^d) \in [0,1]$ with the property that every finite collection $\mathcal{C}$ of unit balls in $\mathbb{R}^d$ admits a disjoint sub-collection $\mathcal{S}$ occupying at least a fraction $f(B^d)$ of the volume of $\mathcal{C}$? This problem was first raised by T. Radó in 1928, for axis-parallel squares in the plane; the author was motivated by a classical covering lemma in real analysis due to Vitali. The case of Euclidean balls was first considered by R. Rado in 1949. Until last year the best known estimates on $f(B^d)$ for unit balls where very far apart: \[ (1+ε_d) 3^{-d} \leq f(B^d) \leq 2^{-d}, \] where $0<ε_d=o_{d\rightarrow \infty}(1)$. Recently, the authors of this note observed that an exponential improvement on the upper bound follows from the Kabatiansky--Levenshtein spherical code bound, while the lower bound was improved by a linear factor by C.~Xie and G.~Ge (see arxiv:2608.09744). The current best estimates for large $d$ are \[ c \cdot d \cdot 3^{-d} \leq f(B^d) \leq 2.447^{-d}, \] where $c>0$ is an absolute constant. Here we offer the first exponential improvement of the lower bound in almost 80 years, which narrows the gap to: \[ 2.910^{-d} \leq f(B^d) \leq 2.447^{-d}. \] Our method is constructive and yields a polynomial time algorithm for finding a disjoint sub-collection realizing the estimate. Moreover the same technique gives similar exponentially improved lower bounds for all symmetric convex bodies satisfying a uniform convexity assumption, e.g., $\ell^p$-balls for all $p\in (1,\infty)$.

Rado's covering problem for cubes and balls: a semi-survey

What is the largest constant $c\in [0,1]$ with the property that every finite collection $\mathcal{C}$ of axis-parallel squares in the plane admits a disjoint sub-collection $\mathcal{S}$ occupying at least a fraction $c$ of the area covered by $\mathcal{C}$? This problem was first raised by T.~Radó in 1928, who was motivated by a classical covering lemma in real analysis due to Vitali. R.~Rado later generalized the problem from axis-parallel squares in the plane to homothetic copies of any given convex body $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, where now we are looking for an optimal constant $F(K)$. Our utmost interest is for cubes and balls in the high-dimensional regime $d\rightarrow \infty$. The estimates that we currently have for cubes are much more precise than those for balls: namely if $Q^d$ is a $d$-dimensional cube, then \[ (e^{-1}+o(1))\frac{2^{-d}}{d \log{d}} \leq F(Q^d)\leq 2^{-d}, \] while denoting $B^d$ a $d$-dimensional Euclidean ball, then \[ (1+ε_d)3^{-d}\leq F(B^d)\leq 2.447^{-d}, \] where $ε_d>0$ vanishes exponentially fast as $d\rightarrow \infty$. The latter upper bound is obtained here by using the Kabatiansky--Levenshtein bound for the sphere packing problem.

Bounded cohomology classes from differential forms

Let $M$ be a complete hyperbolic $n$-manifold, $n\geq 2$. Via integration over geodesic simplices, any closed bounded differential 2-form on $M$ defines a bounded cohomology class in $H^2_b(M)$. It was proved by Barge and Ghys (for $n=2$) and by Battista et al. (for $n>2$) that, if $M$ is closed, then this procedure defines an injective embedding of the (infinite-dimensional) space of closed differential $2$-forms on $M$ into $H^2_b(M)$. We extend this result to the case when the fundamental group of $M$ is of the first kind, i.e. its limit set is equal to the whole boundary at infinity of hyperbolic space (this holds, for example, when $M$ has finite volume). Our argument is different from Barge and Ghys' original one, and relies on the following fact of independent interest: an $L^\infty$ function on the hyperbolic plane is determined by its integrals over all ideal triangles. We prove this fact by way of Fourier analysis on the hyperbolic plane.

On the best constant in the finitary Vitali covering lemma for high dimensional cubes

Let $Γ_d$ be the largest constant such that every finite collection of cubes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ whose sides are parallel to the coordinate axes admits a disjoint sub-collection occupying a fraction $Γ_d$ of its volume. Vitali's greedy algorithm shows that $Γ_d\geq 3^{-d}$, and cutting a cube into its $2^d$ dyadic sub-cubes gives $Γ_d\leq 2^{-d}$. The question of determining the value of $Γ_d$ was first raised by T.~Radó in a 1927 letter to Sierpinski. In this paper we investigate the asymptotic behavior of $Γ_d$ in the high-dimensional limit. We prove that there exists an absolute constant $c>0$ such that \[ Γ_d\geq c\frac{2^{-d}}{d\log d} \] in all dimensions $d$, a significant asymptotic improvement of earlier results by R.~Rado (1949) and Bereg--Dumitrescu--Jiang (2010). This gives an answer to problem D6 in Croft--Falconer--Guy's book "Unsolved problems in geometry".

The Levi $q$-core and Property ($P_q$)

We introduce the Grassmannian $q$-core of a distribution of subspaces of the tangent bundle of a smooth manifold. This is a generalization of the concept of the core previously introduced by the first two authors. In the case where the distribution is the Levi null distribution of a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain $Ω\subseteq \mathbb{C}^n$, we prove that for $1 \leq q \leq n$, the support of the Grassmannian $q$-core satisfies Property $(P_q)$ if and only if the boundary of $Ω$ satisfies Property $(P_q)$. This generalizes a previous result of the third author in the case $q=1$. The notion of the Grassmannian $q$-core offers a perspective on certain generalized stratifications appearing in a recent work of Zaitsev.

On generalized Dirichlet integrals in the smooth and in the o-minimal setting

Given a compact manifold $M$ equipped with smooth vector fields $X_1,\ldots, X_r$, we consider the generalized Dirichlet energy \[\mathbf{E}(f)= \sum_{j=1}^r\int_M |X_jf|^2\, dm,\] where $dm$ is a volume form, and ask if the set \[ \mathcal{B}=\{f\in L^2(M)\colon\,\mathbf{E}(f)+\lVert f\rVert_{L^2(M)}^2\leq 1 \} \] is precompact in $L^2(M)$. We find a geometric sufficient condition in terms of "iterated characteristic sets" and use it to show that, if the vector fields are tame (in the sense of o-minimality) and satisfy the Hörmander condition of some order $s$ on a dense set of points, then the only obstruction to precompactness is the existence of a characteristic submanifold (i.e. a nonempty submanifold of positive codimension to which each $X_j$ is tangent). Implications for global regularity of sum-of-squares operators not necessarily satisfying Hörmander condition are discussed in an appendix.

Higher dimensional worm domains

We show how to construct a class of smooth bounded pseudoconvex domains whose boundary contains a given Stein manifold with strongly pseudoconvex boundary, having a prescribed codimension and D'Angelo class (a cohomological invariant measuring the "winding" of the boundary of the domain around the submanifold). Some open questions in the regularity theory of the $\overline\partial$-Neumann problem are discussed in the setting of these domains.

Sharp subelliptic estimates in the $\bar\partial$-Neumann problem via an uncertainty principle

The problem of giving a (CR-)geometric description of the best possible order of a subelliptic estimate at a boundary point in the $\bar\partial$-Neumann problem is largely open. In this paper, we introduce a novel technique based on a "$\bar\partial$-uncertainty principle" and, as an application, we determine the sharp order of subellipticity at the origin for a large class of Kohn's special domains in ambient dimension $\leq 5$.

Remarks on the Levi core

We investigate a few aspects of the notion of Levi core, introduced by the authors in a previous work: a basic finiteness question, the connections with Kohn's algorithm and with Catlin's property (P).

Nonabelian ramified coverings and $L^p$-boundedness of Bergman projections in $\mathbb C^2$

In this work we explore the theme of $L^p$-boundedness of Bergman projections of domains that can be covered, in the sense of ramified coverings, by "nice" domains (e.g. strictly pseudoconvex domains with real analytic boundary). In particular, we focus on two-dimensional normal ramified coverings whose covering group is a finite unitary reflection group. In an infinite family of examples we are able to prove $L^p$-boundedness of the Bergman projection for every $p\in(1,\infty)$.

An upper bound for the first positive eigenvalue of the Kohn Laplacian on Reinhardt real hypersurfaces

A real hypersurface in $\mathbb{C}^2$ is said to be Reinhardt if it is invariant under the standard $\mathbb{T}^2$-action on $\mathbb{C}^2$. Its CR geometry can be described in terms of the curvature function of its ``generating curve'', i.e., the logarithmic image of the hypersurface in the plane $\mathbb{R}^2$. We give a sharp upper bound for the first positive eigenvalue of the Kohn Laplacian associated to a natural pseudohermitian structure on a compact and strictly pseudoconvex Reinhardt real hypersurface having closed generating curve (which amounts to the $\mathbb{T}^2$-action being free). Our bound is expressed in terms of the $L^2$-norm of the curvature function of the generating curve and is attained if and only if the curve is a circle.

An optimal multiplier theorem for Grushin operators in the plane, II

In a previous work we proved a spectral multiplier theorem of Mihlin--Hörmander type for two-dimensional Grushin operators $-\partial_x^2 - V(x) \partial_y^2$, where $V$ is a doubling single-well potential, yielding the surprising result that the optimal smoothness requirement on the multiplier is independent of $V$. Here we refine this result, by replacing the $L^\infty$ Sobolev condition on the multiplier with a sharper $L^2$ condition. As a consequence, we obtain the sharp range of $L^1$ boundedness for the associated Bochner--Riesz means. The key new ingredient of the proof is a precise pointwise estimate in the transition region for eigenfunctions of one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with doubling single-well potentials.

The core of the Levi distribution

We introduce a new geometrical invariant of CR manifolds of hypersurface type, which we dub the "Levi core" of the manifold. When the manifold is the boundary of a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain, we show how the Levi core is related to two other important global invariants in several complex variables: the Diederich--Fornæss index and the D'Angelo class (namely the set of D'Angelo forms of the boundary). We also show that the Levi core is trivial whenever the domain is of finite-type in the sense of D'Angelo, or the set of weakly pseudoconvex points is contained in a totally real submanifold, while it is nontrivial if the boundary contains a local maximum set. As corollaries to the theory developed here, we prove that for any smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain with trivial Levi core the Diederich--Fornæss index is one and the $\overline{\partial}$-Neumann problem is exactly regular (via a result of Kohn and its generalization by Harrington). Our work builds on and expands recent results of Liu and Adachi--Yum.

An optimal multiplier theorem for Grushin operators in the plane, I

Let $\mathcal{L} = -\partial_x^2 - V(x) \partial_y^2$ be the Grushin operator on $\mathbb{R}^2$ with coefficient $V : \mathbb{R} \to [0,\infty)$. Under the sole assumptions that $V(-x) \simeq V(x) \simeq xV'(x)$ and $x^2 |V''(x)| \lesssim V(x)$, we prove a spectral multiplier theorem of Mihlin--Hörmander type for $\mathcal{L}$, whose smoothness requirement is optimal and independent of $V$. The assumption on the second derivative $V''$ can actually be weakened to a Hölder-type condition on $V'$. The proof hinges on the spectral analysis of one-dimensional Schrödinger operators, including universal estimates of eigenvalue gaps and matrix coefficients of the potential.
