A geometrical instability for ultra-light fields during inflation?

Westudythebehaviourofisocurvatureperturbationsinnon-linearsigmamodels which naturally emerge in supergravity and string inflationary scenarios. We focus on the case of negatively curved field manifolds which can potentially lead to a geometrical destabilisation of isocurvature modes. We find however that heavy fields are stable when their effective mass is computed on the attractor background solution. On the other hand, we show that ultra-light fields can potentially suffer from a geometrical instability when the background trajectory is a geodesic in field space. In this case a full understanding of the system is likely to require the use of non-perturbative methods.

Back-Reaction of Super-Hubble Cosmological Perturbations Beyond Perturbation Theory

We discuss the effect of super-Hubble cosmological fluctuations on the locally measured Hubble expansion rate. We consider a large bare cosmological constant in the early universe in the presence of scalar field matter (the dominant matter component), which would lead to a scale-invariant primordial spectrum of cosmological fluctuations. Using the leading order gradient expansion we show that the expansion rate measured by a (secondary) clock field which is not comoving with the dominant matter component obtains a negative contribution from infrared fluctuations, a contribution whose absolute value increases in time. This is the same effect which a decreasing cosmological constant would produce. This supports the conclusion that infrared fluctuations lead to a dynamical relaxation of the cosmological constant. Our analysis does not make use of any perturbative expansion in the amplitude of the inhomogeneities.

Uncovering novel phase structures in $\Box^k$ scalar theories with the renormalization group

We present a detailed version of our recent work on the renormalization group approach to multicritical scalar theories with higher derivative kinetic term of the form $ϕ(-\Box)^kϕ$ and upper critical dimension $d_c = 2nk/(n-1)$. Depending on whether the numbers $k$ and $n$ have a common divisor two classes of theories have been distinguished which show qualitatively different features. For coprime $k$ and $n-1$ the theory admits a Wilson-Fisher type fixed point with a marginal interaction $ϕ^{2n}$. We derive in this case the renormalization group equations of the potential at the functional level and compute the scaling dimensions and some OPE coefficients, mostly at leading order in $ε$. While giving new results, the critical data we provide are compared, when possible, and accord with a recent alternative approach using the analytic structure of conformal blocks. Instead when $k$ and $n-1$ have a common divisor we unveil a novel interacting structure at criticality. In this case the phase diagram is more involved as other operators come into play at the scale invariant point. $\Box^2$ theories with odd $n$, which fall in this class, are analyzed in detail. Using the RG flows that are derived at quadratic level in the couplings it is shown that a derivative interaction is unavoidable at the critical point. In particular there is an infrared fixed point with a pure derivative interaction at which we compute the scaling dimensions. For the particular example of $\Box^2$ theory in $d_c=6$ we include some cubic corrections to the flow of the potential which enable us to compute some OPE coefficients as well.

Multi-critical $\square^k$ scalar theories: A perturbative RG approach with $ε$-expansion

We employ perturbative RG and $ε$-expansion to study multi-critical single-scalar field theories with higher derivative kinetic terms of the form $ϕ(-\Box)^kϕ$. We focus on those with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric critical point which are characterized by an upper critical dimension $d_c=2 n k/(n-1)$ accumulating at even integers. We distinguish two types of theories depending on whether or not the numbers $k$ and $n-1$ are relatively prime. When they are, the theory admits a local potential approximation. In this case we present the beta functional of the potential and use this to calculate some anomalous dimensions and OPE coefficients. These confirm some CFT data obtained using conformal block techniques, while giving new results. In the second case where $k$ and $n-1$ have a common divisor, the theories show a much richer structure induced by the presence of derivative operators. We study the case $k=2$ with odd values of $n$, which fall in the second class, and calculate the functional flows and spectrum. These theories have a phase diagram characterized at leading order in $ε$ by four fixed points which apart from the Gaussian UV fixed point include an IR fixed point with purely derivative interactions.

Functional perturbative RG and CFT data in the $ε$-expansion

We show how the use of standard perturbative RG in dimensional regularization allows for a renormalization group based computation of both the spectrum and a family of coefficients of the operator product expansion (OPE) for a given universality class. The task is greatly simplified by a straightforward generalization of perturbation theory to a functional perturbative RG approach. We illustrate our procedure in the $ε$-expansion by obtaining the next-to-leading corrections for the spectrum and the leading corrections for the OPE coefficients of Ising and Lee-Yang universality classes and then give several results for the whole family of renormalizable multicritical models $ϕ^{2n}$. Whenever comparison is possible our RG results explicitly match the ones recently derived in CFT frameworks.

New universality class in three dimensions: The critical Blume-Capel model

We study the Blume-Capel universality class in $d=\frac{10}{3}-ε$ dimensions. The RG flow is extracted by looking at poles in fractional dimension of three loop diagrams using $\overline{\rm MS}$. The theory is the only nontrivial universality class which admits an expansion to three dimensions with $ε=\frac{1}{3}<1$. We compute the relevant scaling exponents and estimate some of the OPE coefficients to the leading order. Our findings agree with and complement CFT results. Finally we discuss a family of nonunitary multicritical models which includes the Lee-Yang and Blume-Capel classes as special cases.

Covariant and single-field effective action with the background-field formalism

In the context of scalar quantum field theory we introduce a class of generically nonlinear quantum-background splits for which the splitting Ward identity, encoding the single field dependence in the effective action, can be solved exactly. We show that this can be used to construct an effective action which is both covariant and dependent on the background and fluctuation fields only through a single total field in a way independent from the dynamics. Moreover we discuss the criteria under which the ultraviolet symmetries are inherited by the quantum effective action. The approach is demonstrated through some examples, including the $O(N)$ effective field theory, which might be of interest for the Higgs sector of the Standard Model or its extensions.

Leading CFT constraints on multi-critical models in d>2

We consider the family of renormalizable scalar QFTs with self-interacting potentials of highest monomial $ϕ^{m}$ below their upper critical dimensions $d_c=\frac{2m}{m-2}$, and study them using a combination of CFT constraints, Schwinger-Dyson equation and the free theory behavior at the upper critical dimension. For even integers $m \ge 4$ these theories coincide with the Landau-Ginzburg description of multi-critical phenomena and interpolate with the unitary minimal models in $d=2$, while for odd $m$ the theories are non-unitary and start at $m=3$ with the Lee-Yang universality class. For all the even potentials and for the Lee-Yang universality class, we show how the assumption of conformal invariance is enough to compute the scaling dimensions of the local operators $ϕ^k$ and of some families of structure constants in either the coupling's or the $ε$-expansion. For all other odd potentials we express some scaling dimensions and structure constants in the coupling's expansion.

The background scale Ward identity in quantum gravity

We show that with suitable choices of parametrization, gauge fixing and cutoff, the anomalous variation of the effective action under global rescalings of the background metric is identical to the derivative with respect to the cutoff, i.e. to the beta functional, as defined by the exact RG equation. The Ward identity and the RG equation can be combined, resulting in a modified flow equation that is manifestly invariant under global background rescalings.

Pomeron-Odderon Interactions: A Functional RG Flow Analysis

In the quest for an effective field theory which could help to understand some non perturbative feature of the QCD in the Regge limit, we consider a Reggeon Field Theory (RFT) for both Pomeron and Odderon interactions and perform an analysys of the critical theory using functional renormalization group techniques, unveiling a novel symmetry structure.

Covariant and background independent functional RG flow for the effective average action

We extend our prescription for the construction of a covariant and background-independent effective action for scalar quantum field theories to the case where momentum modes below a certain scale are suppressed by the presence of an infrared regulator. The key step is an appropriate choice of the infrared cutoff for which the Ward identity, capturing the information from single-field dependence of the ultraviolet action, continues to be exactly solvable, and therefore, in addition to covariance, manifest background independence of the effective action is guaranteed at any scale. A practical consequence is that in this framework one can adopt truncations dependent on the single total field. Furthermore we discuss the necessary and sufficient conditions for the preservation of symmetries along the renormalization group flow.

Vacuum energy, Standard Model physics and the $750\; \rm{GeV}$ Diphoton Excess at the LHC

The conditions for the cancellation of one loop contributions to vacuum energy (both U.V. divergent and finite) coming from the known (Standard Model) fields and the field associated with the hypothetical 750 Gev diphoton excess are examined. Depending on the nature of this latter resonance we find that in order to satisfy the constraints (sum rules) different additional, minimal field contributions are required, leading to yet to be observed particles.

Renormalization Group Equation and scaling solutions for f(R) gravity in exponential parametrization

We employ the exponential parametrization of the metric and a "physical" gauge fixing procedure to write a functional flow equation for the gravitational effective average action in an $f(R)$ truncation. The background metric is a four-sphere and the coarse-graining procedure contains three free parameters. We look for scaling solutions, i.e. non-Gaussian fixed points for the function $f$. For a discrete set of values of the parameters, we find simple global solutions of quadratic polynomial form. For other values, global solutions can be found numerically. Such solutions can be extended in certain regions of parameter space and have two relevant directions. We discuss the merits and the shortcomings of this procedure.

Could reggeon field theory be an effective theory for QCD in the Regge limit?

In this paper we investigate the possibility whether, in the extreme limit of high energies and large transverse distances, reggeon field theory might serve as an effective theory of high energy scattering for strong interactions. We analyse the functional renormalization group equations (flow equations) of reggeon field theory and search for fixed points in the space of (local) reggeon field theories. We study in complementary ways the candidate for the scaling solution, investigate its main properties and briefly discuss possible physical interpretations.

A flow equation for f(R) gravity and some of its exact solutions

We write a Renormalization Group (RG) equation for the function f in a theory of gravity in the f(R) truncation. Our equation differs from previous ones due to the exponential parametrization of the quantum fluctuations and to the choice of gauge. The cutoff procedure depends on three free parameters, and we find that there exist discrete special choices of parameters for which the flow equation has fixed points where f=f_0+f_1 R+f_2 R^2. For other values of the parameters the solution seems to be continuously deformed.

Asymptotic safety in $O(N)$ scalar models coupled to gravity

We extend recent results on scalar-tensor theories to the case of an O(N)-invariant multiplet. Some exact fixed point solutions of the RG flow equations are discussed. We find that also in the functional context, on employing a standard "type-I" cutoff, too many scalars destroy the gravitational fixed point. For d=3 we show the existence of the gravitationally dressed Wilson-Fisher fixed point also for N>1. We discuss also the results of the analysis for a different, scalar-free, coarse-graining scheme.

Search of scaling solutions in scalar-tensor gravity

We write new functional renormalization group equations for a scalar nonminimally coupled to gravity. Thanks to the choice of the parametrization and of the gauge fixing they are simpler than older equations and avoid some of the difficulties that were previously present. In three dimensions these equations admit, at least for sufficiently small fields, a solution that may be interpreted as a gravitationally dressed Wilson-Fisher fixed point. We also find for any dimension d>2 two analytic scaling solutions which we study for d=3 and d=4. One of them corresponds to the fixed point of the Einstein-Hilbert truncation, the others involve a nonvanishing minimal coupling.

Multi-meson Yukawa interactions at criticality

The critical behavior of a relativistic $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric Yukawa model at zero temperature and density is discussed for a continuous number of fermion degrees of freedom and of spacetime dimensions, with emphasis on the role played by multi-meson exchange in the Yukawa sector. We argue that this should be generically taken into account in studies based on the functional renormalization group, either in four-dimensional high-energy models or in lower-dimensional condensed-matter systems. By means of the latter method, we describe the generation of multi-critical models in less then three dimensions, both at infinite and finite number of flavors. We also provide different estimates of the critical exponents of the chiral Ising universality class in three dimensions for various field contents, from a couple of massless Dirac fermions down to the supersymmetric theory with a single Majorana spinor.
