What really matters in Hilbert-space stochastic processes

The relationship between discontinuous and continuous stochastic processes in Hilbert space is investigated. It is shown that for any continuos process there is a parent discontinuous process, that becomes the continuous one in the proper infinite frequency limit. From the point of view of solving the quantum measurement problem, what really matters is the choice of the set of operators whose value distributions are made sharp. In particular, the key role of position sharping is emphasized.

Is a description deeper than the quantum one possible?

Recently, it has been argued that quantum mechanics is a complete theory, and that different quantum states do necessarily correspond to different elements of reality, under the assumptions that quantum mechanics is correct and that measurement settings can be freely chosen. In this work, we prove that this result is a consequence of an unnecessarily strong mathematical expression of the free choice assumption, which embodies more conditions than explicitly stated. The issues of the completeness of quantum mechanics, and of the interpretation of the state vector, are by no means resolved. Taking this perspective, we describe how the recently introduced class of crypto-nonlocal hidden variables theories can be used to characterize the maximal possible departure from quantum mechanics, when the system consists of a pair of qubits.

Entanglement and Properties of Composite Quantum Systems: a Conceptual and Mathematical Analysis

Various topics concerning the entanglement of composite quantum systems are considered with particular emphasis concerning the strict relations of such a problem with the one of attributing objective properties to the constituents. Most of the paper deals with composite systems in pure states. After a detailed discussion and a precise formal analysis of the case of systems of distinguishable particles, the problems of entanglement and the one of the properties of subsystems of systems of identical particles are thourougly discussed. This part is the most interesting and new and it focuses various subtle questions which have never been adequately discussed in the literature. Some inappropriate assertions which appeared in recent papers are analyzed. The relations of the main subject of the paper with the nonlocal aspects of quantum mechanics, as well as with the possibility of deriving Bell's inequality are also considered.
