Overview and design optimization of a custom hybrid X-ray telescope for the International Axion Observatory (IAXO)

We present the design optimization for maximizing the effective area of a custom X-ray optic for the International Axion Observatory (IAXO) and BabyIAXO, including its novel hybrid configuration that enables full coverage of the 700-mm-diameter magnetic bore with minimal stress imposed on the mirrors; shell layout optimized for axion spectra and spatial distribution; and the coating recipes that enhance reflectivity in the energy range of interest. We evaluate how these design choices improve the observation signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of BabyIAXO and IAXO by calculating the broad-band effective area and simulating the point spread function (PSF) and focal spot at the detector plane. The cost-effective and scalable optic offers an energy response from 0.03--15 keV, achieving an effective area that exceeds 2400 cm$^2$ near 1 keV - the peak of the ABC axion spectrum - and remains above 1700 cm$^2$ around 3 keV - the peak of the Primakoff axion spectrum. It yields a half-power diameter (HPD) of $\sim 46^{\prime\prime}$ for an on-axis point source at infinity, and a focal-spot HPD of $\sim 120^{\prime\prime}$ for the radial distribution expected for axion signals within the approximately $3^{\prime}$-radius solar core. A relatively generous fabrication-error budget is also summarized. The custom optic, accounting for fabrication errors, is anticipated to deliver a more than $55$-fold enhancement in the SNR.

The ASTRI SST-2M Prototype: Structure and Mirror

The next generation of IACT (Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope) will explore the uppermost end of the VHE (Very High Energy) domain up to about few hundreds of TeV with unprecedented sensibility, angular resolution and imaging quality. To this end, INAF (Italian National Institute of Astrophysics) is currently developing a scientific and technological telescope prototype for the implementation of the CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array) observatory. ASTRI (Astrofisica con Specchi a Tecnologia Replicante Italiana) foresees the full design, development, installation and calibration of a Small Size 4 meter class Telescope. The telescope, named SST-2M, is based on an aplanatic, wide field, double reflection optical layout in a Schwarzschild-Couder configuration. In this paper we report about the technological solutions adopted for the telescope and for the mirrors. In particular the structural and electro-mechanical design of the telescope and the results on the optical performance derived after the development of a prototype of the segments that will be assembled to form the primary mirror.

Cold-shaping of thin glass foils as novel method for mirrors processing. From the basic concepts to mass production of mirrors

We present a method for the production of segmented optics. It is a novel processing developed at INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Brera (INAF-OAB) employing commercial of-the-shelf materials. It is based on the shaping of thin glass foils by means of forced bending, this occurring at room temperature (cold-shaping). The glass is then assembled into a sandwich structure for retaining the imposed shape. The principal mechanical features of the mirrors are the very low weight, rigidity and environmental robustness. The cost and production time also turns to be very competitive. In this paper we sum up the results achieved during the r&d performed in the past years. We have investigated the theoretical limits of the structural components by means of parametric finite elements analyses; we also discuss the effects caused by the most common structural loads. Finally, the process implementation, the more significant validation tests and the mass production at the industry is described.
