The Quantum Fourier Transform for Continuous Variables

The quantum Fourier transform for discrete variable (dvQFT) is an efficient algorithm for several applications. It is usually considered for the processing of quantum bits (qubits) and its efficient implementation is obtained with two elementary components: the Hadamard gate and the controlled--phase gate. In this paper, the quantum Fourier transform operating with continuous variables (cvQFT) is considered. Thus, the environment becomes the Hilbert space, where the natural definition of the cvQFT will be related to rotation operators, which in the $N$--mode are completely specified by unitary matrices of order $N$. Then the cvQFT is defined as the rotation operator whose rotation matrix is given by the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) matrix. For the implementation of rotation operators with primitive components (single--mode rotations and beam splitters), we follow the well known Murnaghan procedure, with appropriate modifications. Moreover, algorithms related to the fast Fourier transform (FFT) are applied to reduce drastically the implementation complexity. The final part is concerned with the application of the cvQFT to general Gaussian states. In particular, we show that cvQFT has the simple effect of transforming the displacement vector by a one-dimensional DFT, the squeeze matrix by a two-dimensional DFT, and the rotation matrix by a Fourier-like similarity transform.

On the Multiplicity of Density Operator Representation

The density operator is usually defined starting from a set of kets in the Hilbert space and a probability distribution. From this definition it is easy to obtain a factorization of a given density operator, here called density factor (DF). The multiplicity and the variety of DFs is investigated using the tools of Matrix Analysis, arriving in particular to establish the DF with minimal size. The approach based on Matrix Analysis does not seem to be available elsewhere.

On the role of Hermite-like polynomials in the Fock representations of Gaussian states

The expansion of quantum states and operators in terms of Fock states plays a fundamental role in the field of continuous-variable quantum mechanics. In particular, for general single-mode Gaussian operators and Gaussian noisy states, many different approaches have been used in the evaluation of their Fock representation. In this paper a natural approach has been applied using exclusively the operational properties of the Hermite and Hermite-like polynomials and showing their fundamental role in this field. Closed-form results in terms of polynomials, exponentials, and simple algebraic functions are the major contribution of the paper.

From Hamiltonians to complex symplectic transformations

Gaussian unitaries are specified by a second order polynomial in the bosonic operators, that is, by a quadratic polynomial and a linear term. From the Hamiltonian other equivalent representations of the Gaussian unitaries are obtained, such as Bogoliubov and real symplectic transformations. The paper develops an alternative representation, called complex symplectic transformation, which is more compact and is comprehensive of both Bogoliubov and real symplectic transformations. Moreover, it has other advantages. One of the main results of the theory, not available in the literature, is that the final displacement is not simply given by the linear part of the Hamiltonian, but depends also on the quadratic part. In particular, it is shown that by combining squeezing and rotation, it is possible to achieve a final displacement with an arbitrary amount.

Gaussian states and geometrically uniform symmetry

Quantum Gaussian states can be considered as the majority of the practical quantum states used in quantum communications and more generally in quantum information. Here we consider their properties in relation with the geometrically uniform symmetry, a property of quantum states that greatly simplifies the derivation of the optimal decision by means of the square root measurements. In a general framework of the $N$-mode Gaussian states we show the general properties of this symmetry and the application of the optimal quantum measurements. An application example is presented, to quantum communication systems employing pulse position modulation. We prove that the geometrically uniform symmetry can be applied to the general class of multimode Gaussian states.

Helstrom's Theory on Quantum Binary Decision Revisited

For a binary system specified by the density operators r0 and r1 and by the prior probabilities q0 and q1, Helstrom's theory permits the evaluation of the optimal measurement operators and of the corresponding maximum correct detection probability. The theory is based on the eigendecomposition (EID) of the operator, given by the difference of the weighted density operators, namely D = q1r1-q0r0. In general, this EID is obtained explicitly only with pure states, whereas with mixed states it must be carried out numerically. In this letter we show that the same evaluation can be performed on the basis of a modified version of the Gram matrix. The advantage is due to the fact that the outer products of density operators are replaced by inner product, with a considerable dimensionality reduction. At the limit, in quantum optical communications the density operators have infinite dimensions, whereas the inner products are simply scalar quantities. The Gram matrix approach permits the explicit (not numerical) evaluation of a binary system performance in cases not previously developed.

Efficient Optimal Minimum Error Discrimination of Symmetric Quantum States

This paper deals with the quantum optimal discrimination among mixed quantum states enjoying geometrical uniform symmetry with respect to a reference density operator $ρ_0$. It is well-known that the minimal error probability is given by the positive operator-valued measure (POVM) obtained as a solution of a convex optimization problem, namely a set of operators satisfying geometrical symmetry, with respect to a reference operator $Π_0$, and maximizing $\textrm{Tr}(ρ_0 Π_0)$. In this paper, by resolving the dual problem, we show that the same result is obtained by minimizing the trace of a semidefinite positive operator $X$ commuting with the symmetry operator and such that $X >= ρ_0$. The new formulation gives a deeper insight into the optimization problem and allows to obtain closed-form analytical solutions, as shown by a simple but not trivial explanatory example. Besides the theoretical interest, the result leads to semidefinite programming solutions of reduced complexity, allowing to extend the numerical performance evaluation to quantum communication systems modeled in Hilbert spaces of large dimension.
